I rooted my phone, was basically a stock amaze with only a handful of apps loaded on and my contact list. So, once rooted I made the mistake of not backing anything up, and started deleting apps that were running in the background. When I got to the tags app I deleted it, and the phone kept popping up the same error message, wanting me to send a report to htc. Message was an unexpected error, so I knew I deleted the wrong app. I powered the phone down, and it booted normally, with the only exception being I can't download anything from the market. Market will load though. error is com.android.vending has stopped unexpectedly. And I can't access my wireless and networks directory in settings. When I try I get an error message saying settings has stopped unexpectedly.
My question is then, am I stuck with starting over, and bringing my phone to stock? I tried to find the tags app to re install it but no luck. Or is there any other kind of recovery I could do to 'find' the missing file? Its on telus network, and I'm lucky that the telus ruu is here.

That sucks.
Solution:
Master reset the phone.
1. Save any open files, and back up all necessary data.
2. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
3. Tap Settings.
4. Tap SD & phone storage.
5. Tap Factory data reset.
6. Read the message about erasing data.
7. If desired, tap Erase all data to erase the data in the phone’s internal storage.
8. Tap Reset phone.
9. Tap Erase everything.
Well if you knew which files you are missing you could go in the zip file of the rom you flashed copy those files and paste them into system location. But most probably u dont know which file u deleted otherwise u wouldnt have deleted them if u knew what u were doing. So ur only solution is flash a custom rom again or if u want to stick to stock rom just flash one of the ruu found in the develop section

well, **** hit the fan once I deleted tags, the nfc tool on the phone. I took a chance with it, thinking nfc wasn't tied in with anything else, but I was wrong.

then just download some rom find the nfc file and copy paste it. simple as that.or grab the file I attached here
thanks for the link! I'll try that out later to see if it fixes it, and if not then I'll probably flash a custom rom, AR 1.1 sounds like a good one to start.
Just flash a rom. If you only want stock there are stock roms available. If you want a custom rom then use one of those. It will update your system with the missing app that you had deleted. And let this be a lesson to you, ALWAYS make a backup before making any changes.

meh, installed AR 1.1 and works amazing. I'm new to this, so cut me a break.

To put it simply when I boot up my vibrant, it switches to the galaxy s GT-19000 screen then fully boots into what seems like a completely different phone. My contacts were still there until I factory reset, but none of my apps or anything. I also believe that my calls and messaging do not work. I just recently rooted my phone but where things went bad is when I tried installing voodoo lagfix. I tried adding the link where I got the dl for voodoo lagfix but because I am a new user I can not add links, but i got it from the project voodoo website and it was the second link in their dl section, the one for froyo installable with clockworkmod recovery and rom manager. When I try and go into recovery mode ClockwordMod Recovery v2.5.1.3 - Voodoo lagfix is what comes up and is completely different from what the recovery was before. I just want to get rid of voodoo and get my phone back to how it was before. Im sorry for the terrible description, if there is anything else I need to add just let me know, but please, what can I do to fix my phone? any help would be greatly appreciated.

If so, ODIN to stock JFD.
you may need to use Vol Up + Power, unlike the normal way which is both volume buttons pressed in.

I am an idiot and forgot to backup before I made changes, is there any other way that I can get back to the way my phone was before? And after going back to the stock JFD using odin, will I still have voodoo on my phone?
If you used titanium backup, your folder of backups should still be on your internal.
If you did not backup, sorry... hope you have them backed up.

I did back up all of my app with titanium back up, so do I just have to re-dl titanium back up in the market and then just go from there?
^ Ti Backup needs root, so grab the update.zip from my guide and root (incredibly easy), move it to internal, go to stock recovery, install, reboot, you are rooted.
At this point, before you restore, you need to update to a more recent version of Android. you do NOT want to be stuck on JFD (2.1). I'd suggest a ROM like Trigger... crazy stable, faster and themed (I like it).
THEN you can restore your apps after downloading titanium backup (assuming you have them backed up on your internal already).

Sounds like somebodies got a lot of apps to download againlol. Now you'll remember to get TB and make a backup, heheh, but oh well its a learning experience really! If you have any apps that you paid forl at least gmail will remember that and you will see them as purchased, but unfortunately you'll still have to search for them individually.

^^ the voodoo folder is there b/c you did not format your card *no reason to*
when/if you flash trigger, it will convert you to EXT4 file system (voodoo). This IS okay and not a big deal. Not sure what site you went to, but I have 190% faith in the Trigger ROM and voodoo.. both have very talented people supporting it.
^ Paid apps do not need to be searched for. Look in My Apps, they are all there. He also apparently DID make a backup at some point so lets not go bashing the guy.
I do agree to backup often.
I don't think theyre on my internal anymore, I did a clear cache, factory reset when my phone was initially messed up and I think thats where my problem lies. and as for the rom, what are your thoughts on the TW bionix rom? I initially was trying to root and install this rom

Your call man. I made my suggestion for speed/stability/appearance. Don't delete the voodoo folder, even if you did, it will be there after you flash your rom.

You can do whatever you want with it if ur just gonna ODIN and re-flash. I just thought this was funny my bad. I wouldn't be too concerned with it really. Just leave it alone.
- If in fact you made a backup with TB and moved it to ur PC you could replace that back into the /sdcard/ and when you re-download TB just run the restore batch. BOOM! good to go. If not then oh well.
- The "myapps" will show you all your purchased ROMs so you will not need to research for them, just need to re-download them but any "free" apps will need to be researched and redownloaded.
- My friend has a Nexus S and she says that when she does an initial setup after flashing any ROM the gmail sync automatically downloads all her purchased apps. Thats what I was refering to cuz that would be friggin titz!
- Team Whiskey ROMs are proven and stable Bionix is a great choice to flash.

^ GB restores automatically, while good for some.. I hate it. Takes longer to download/install than restoring AND it doesn't restore the data (boo)
So I am getting ready to install this ROM, or at least try to. Question I have is when it says to " 1) Download update-unnamed-v1.X.X-full.zip and place it on your SD card", what does that mean exactly? Do I need to download it onto my computer and move it to my phone? Or do I download it right onto the phone?
Also, do I need an external SD card installed into the phone or can I just save the zip onto the internal memory?

Doesn't matter how you download it and it can go on either SD card, internal or external.

when you wipe, you will lose everything on your phone. So make sure your contacts are backed up. If you have them in gmail, then you wont lose them because after flashing the new rom and once you setup your gmail account, your contacts will come back automatically.
Yup, best for every Android user to import all of their contacts into their Google/Gmail account. I manually entered mine into Gmail when I first got an Android phone. It sucked, but since then I haven't had to worry about it. As soon as I flash a ROM and sign in to my Google account my contacts just pop in like magic.

yep. I spent the hour or whatever to manually enter all my contacts. It can take a while depending on how many contacts you have, but it will save you a LOT of time and headaches later on.
Another question for you, what happens to my stock rom when I install UnNamed? Will it still be available to me should I need to switch back?
With my paid apps, will I be able to redownload them for free or am I going to have to pay again? I have titanium backup but since I am wiping the phone wont everything I backed up get wiped too?

Do you currently have CWM installed? If so, you can do a full nandroid backup from recovery of your stock rom if you choose to go back to stock. If not, Entropy has a great thread in the dev section about loading back to stock.
UnNamed will simply become the one and only rom on your phone (which isn't a bad thing) after you flash it, the stock will always get replaced.
As to your paid apps via the Market, they'll be there for you to download again for free. TB is another good option, just make sure that you ONLY choose 'Missing Apps with Data' for any restoring.

Whenever you choose 'Wipe data', all folders on /sdcard (clockworkmod, titaniumbackup, download, etc.) remain there and untouched. Formatting the /sdcard is another story.
Your answer was correct since the storage area where the contact info is stored will in fact get wiped but it kind of makes it sound as though you will lose everything, which is not the case.

If you don't backup the stock rom you will loose it.
To back up the stock rom which you are using now is easy.
Go into CWM Recovery and select "backup/restore"
then select "backup".
OR if you are not sure about CWM recovery you can always do it the easier way.

When ever you see "sdcard" mentioned in any of these posts or replies
people are referring to the internal sdcard unless they specify "external sdcard"
I also found it strange and a little confusing at first but for a different reason,
the reason being is that we really don't have an externel sdcard at all except
for the one which is inside of our phone.
(they are both internal sdcards since both of them reside inside of our phones!)

Hi GTG, is there any way you can implement Aerobahn's mod to skip songs from any app like google music, pandora or any other music app to skip songs with the volume keys?
I found a treath for a SGS2 international version that allows this. Any other sugestions. It would be really convinient when playing music via a bluetooth headset. I promess I'll make a donation.
Is it hard to learn the coding the implement this mod to your ROM?

Alright, I did all the steps and I am pretty sure it worked bc my AOS dropped considerably. However, when I do the pulldown menu there are still only the five options. And when I hold down the power key there are only the three original options that I had in the stock rom. Did I mess something up? The only thing that was a little different from the instructions was when I chose the zip to install it was called "updated" in my menu instead of "update-unnamed-v1.X.X-full.zip" like it says in the instructions.

Sounds like you flashed the wrong file. What does it show for Build Number under 'About Phone' in settings? It should show UnNamed v1.0.4.
Also, you need to swipe the Notification options to the left to see the additional 5 but if you did indeed flash the wrong file, you obviously won't see that.

Sounds like they selected 'apply /sdcard/update.zip' instead of navigating to the proper directory and selecting the actual downloaded file, or 'apply update from sdcard' in the root CWM menu option.

Just go download this "update-unnamed-v1.0.4-full.zip": http://www.multiupload.com/9UTPJDVDZQ
After its downloaded put it on your SDCARD (not inside any folders).
Go into CWM recovery and select "install zip from sdcard" then simply
select the "update-unnamed-v1.0.4-full.zip" in your sdcard and flash.
This way everything will be GOOOOD
unnamed rom is probably the most stable rom out thr.
I rooted my phone successfully and passed the test with the app Root Check Basic and I can use Wifi tether and everything. But when I start my phone up and try to use different setting options for my MOFO I get the error:

I have tried the system restore,
unfreezing all of my apps,

clearing the data for each app,

sounds good so far, now if your unlocked on cm7 it does that even on my phone
but if your stock you must have pooched it, nothing serious but you will need a computer and RSDlight because honestly, you did everything correct and its still hatin on you follow this link and you should be A-OK and reroot it again

best thing if that fails is to download the STOCK firmware and try even flashing that, if you come across the error code make sure you post it up in here so we can narrow it down
Just incase the steps above don't work, how would I flash with the stock sbf and restore it from Titanium Backup? I'm sorry I kind of a newbie to the rooting on android all together. Trying to get my experience now with some different forums

you would need to use RSDlight which can be found on the threads here or the one i posted above, i would help find the stock sbf but im at work and little on time now to find it. more then likely could be found via google.
everything you need to do can be found in ACS qbkings thread search the development thread and you will find it he does have youtube videos up as well that can help you step through step on reflashing the sbf to rooting unlocking and installing on your phone make sure you give him a thumbs up

Ok so I found out why I was getting that random error message before when I tried to go through the process of getting that stock ROM on the MOPHO to get rid of those errors. It was because I still had my SD and SIM card in still. So after taking them out and going through all the processes I got it working now. Thanks for all of your help!

I would get this same error as well as other system apps crashing on both my captive (Samsung Galaxy S) and Samsung Galaxy SII Skyrocket. The cause was that I restored system apps from older versions of android and they were conflicting with the newer build. When you do the batch restore be sure to deselect system apps such as phone 1.0. Most of these are marked in red so they are easy to route out. Also you can sort by install date to push most of them to the bottom of the list. I did not install phone however I am getting the error now on my new SG2 Skyrocket. Need to test it some more but do not have time right now. It may be CONTACTS/CALLS data, or maybe SMS/MMS/APN Dial Storage data that is the culprit. or maybe i missed contacts 1.0 or phone 1.0 when i did the restore. Anyway I will go back and do it again and let you know my finds.
BTW I am restoring my data to my AT&T SGII Skyrocket which was created on the Captivate running 2.3.3 Cognition 5.2. The SG2II is stock, rooted 2.3.5.
Note, using the Migrate System Data option in TB's preferences may resolve this too as restoring with TB across newer versions of Android have not been this problematic in the past and I forgot to check that option. Haste makes waste.
FIX
OK I got tired of my phone messing up so I took the time out to fix it.
My suspicions were correct, in my case the culprit was:
[CONTACTS/CALLS...cts Storage 2.3.5
You can either choose to not restore the offending data or if you have already done so and are experiencing the:
The process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again
error you can delete the data for the offending item(s) via TB.
To remove the data just locate in the backup/restore page the item(s) in question in TB and tap on them. choose wipe data. Reboot and it should be fixed.
A heavy handed way to avoid this or if you are not sure what is the offending data you can simply use the restore missing apps + data batch option in TB. This will ensure no system apps are replaced as this is the cause of the problem in the first place (replacing an app or its data with and outdated version).
If you go this route and still need the missing data imported, use google's cloud (account sync) to retrieve your contact, calender, and other data. As for text messages, you can carry these over with a free app on the market Backup SMS.

Hey guys, so here's the problem and I hope you can all help.
Before someone yells at me I did do a search here before and I've attempted the things suggested as mentioned below, and it didn't work.
I rooted my android razr maxx. And in an attempt to get rid of bloatware I deleted some programs which I THOUGHT would have no affect, so now when I go to click on a contact in my phone I get a "Process com.motorola.contacts has stopped unexpectedly" message.

Even after doing that I still can't get it. I've factory reset so many times it's become a thing of desperation. I can't unroot my phone or do anything that requires a USB data cable, because well, for some reason mine isn't working now.
tl;dr
Problems are:
1) Force close "Process com.motorola.contacts has stopped unexpectedly" Attempted to re install missing files.
2) Can't/Don't know how to update phone now that it's rooted.
3) Data cable is not working, there is no option to turn phone into mass storage device.
You need to use RSD Lite to flash a full system image as you have screwed up your system files and no factory restore will fix that.
Every single thread about bloat removal states: DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING, SIMPLY FREEZE! It is a piece of good advice.
Just as szadzik was saying I learned this one the hard way also.. You never never delete a system app or settings.. and factory reset will not reinstall apps but it will delete your apps and data.. so yah just use the features in ics app menus to
Disable apps but never delete them.. or use titanium backup (my personal favorite)

Search the forum for fastboot files for your model.
Boy I'm not having great luck with my hardware atm. My Nexus 7 has got some serious lag issue, probably needing a factory restore, and now my SGS2 is playing up and looking like it might need the same. I'd appreciate the help before I go to that - not sure where I am on backups, I think this problem has been lingering for a while unnoticed, and its possible my scheduled Titanium task hasn't worked in a while because of this.
So let me run through. I was trying to update a few apps in the app store, and I got 'the package file is invalid' errors over and over. I was a little confused, and suddenly I was getting a flickering alert for 'low on application space' that would come and go.
I went into applications to see what my space was and it was fine, 400mb free. But I noticed that all of the apps were reading as zero size. I tried removing one I knew was big, and the free space adjusted by a real amount, but no change to the sizes in the listing. I went thru and uninstalled a bunch just to be sure. Even after this, I could still not install any apps without getting the invalid message.
I decided to restart and wipe the cache, thinking maybe something had gone wrong there. No change. All the installed apps were working ok, though, no problems running things. So, I decide that something minor has corrupted, and that a reflash of the current firmware would maybe do the job (which is a stock XEU build of ICS). I have 'Mobile Odin' and keep the current firmware file on the SD just in case. I of course want to run a backup first, so I fire up Titanium, which fails to do the backup, with an error about something catching fire trying to 'do calculation'. I begin to figure that something worse has happened by this point.
I decide to go ahead with the reflash using Mobile Odin. It seems to load fine, I tell it to wipe the cache and so on. The flash goes fine, and the phone reboots. I expected it to go through the little optimising applications thing it does, and true enough I see this box load up, saying 'start applications' and the spinning wheel. Then, it abruptly closes, and I get my home panel...
But here's where it goes severely wrong - every app I can think of now crashes, displaying the 'unfortunately XXX has stopped'. Boxes and boxes, for basically every app that in any way runs at startup, every widget, even my Swift Key and Swipe keyboards. Yikes! After clearing the huge backlog of boxes, I start trying to open stuff, and it quickly becomes apparent that no app will work, save for those that are physically part of the firmware (such as Settings, Messages, Phone, Contacts, Memo, Camera). Basically, unless its a stock app, it's just dead. My SD apps show up as if they aren't found, with the little grey SD box. I can't even open the Play Store to try redownloading an app.
I'm going to try, once I'm home from work, reflashing the firmware using desktop Odin. But, failing that, I will need a factory restore it would seem. Basically, I'm looking help either fixing the problem without a factory restore, or a way to back up my data (messages and app data) in case my Titanium Backups are old or broken.

Edit: When I do a *#1234#, my CSC comes up as 'Unknown'. Would this cause these issues?
Boot into CWM recovery and fix permissions.

I don't have CWM recovery installed. Will it be possible for me to install it with the phone in this state? Any reasons why the permissions will have gone like this?

Flash a CF root kernel using desktop Odin, reboot into CWM via hard keys vol+ home and power. Find fix permissions, run it, reboot, hopefully work...
Most apps that aren't granted the right permissions that allow them to fulfil there main task will usually end up in a FC.

The phone is already rooted. Can I apply CWM as an update.zip from inside the current recovery?

Unsure. Most likely not. It would be like running 2 kernels at once... just wouldnt work. Wouldn't risk it. Could hard brick the phone.

1. Backup your important data.
2. Uninstall apps you don't use
3. Using a ROOT capable explorer goto /data/app on your phone, delete all .odex files you find there
4. Disable System apps you don't need/use
- Goto Settings - Apps - All - Select the app you want to disable, select FORCE STOP, then DISABLE.
Repeat the step for each app
- Alternatively you can use titanium backup pro to freeze those apps

5. Boot to recovery (the stock recovery)
- clear cache
- reboot phone.
6. If any user / system app gives you force stop warning, then clear the days of that/those app(s) in settings.

Thanks for that, but I'm sorry, what? I seem to be missing something - you've answered something that seems to be an entirely different problem! I can't even RUN an explorer let alone grant it root - so I can't reach the ODEXes, which aren't the reason for the FCs anyway.
This 'fix permissions' sounds like a good plan, I just need to know my best method for getting CWM onto the phone given it's state. I think I can use the update.zip method, but I may have to just wait until I can get to a machine capable of running Odin for me, to flash the CF kernel.

Ok.
Let me tell you some things you need to know
1. Fix permissions only has much effect on system apps, only if their permission is broken
2. Flashing a new Kernel will never fix many FC
3. Have you booted to recovery and wipe cache? If after doing this and your problem still persist, then you might have perform a Factory Data Reset.
4. Flashing a new firmware via Odin will not dramatically stop Force close errors. You will still need a factory reset to fix that.

I've tried wiping cache in recovery, yes. The only apps that run are the system ones. I can't explain why permissions may have been broken on the other apps, but it may be the case, so I'd like to try it. And, it was a flash via (Mobile) Odin CAUSED the FCs, so I don't know if that's true. Regardless, I'm heading home now, I can try flashing the CWM and run the fix permissions, and otherwise I need to figure out a backup solution before I factory restore.
I don't mean this wrong, but I'd prefer you don't just throw generic (yet good for general faults) advice if you don't have personal knowledge of the particular problem. It could be misleading.

You know my aim wasn't to mislead you but to help. I actually missed somethings in your Original post like "Every apps now doesn't work" etc
Because the only apps that run now are the system apps proves that there is something wrong in the /data partition, a location where all user apps, settings etc are stored.
Anyway, it's always very good to try all other means possible before factory reset.

Oh, I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to offend you or have a go. I appreciate all the help about to try flashing the rooted CWM kernel, to try the permissions fix. If that doesn't work, I need to figure out some way of doing a backup of sorts, before I do a restore :crying:
UPDATE: After flashing the CF-Kernel to access CWM, I'm getting a message I'm unfamiliar with "The System UIDs are inconsistent" yadda yadda factory reset. I'm currently 'fixing permissions' It looks like it's stalled, but it may just take a while. I have a lot of apps. Anyone understand the UIDs message in my context?
Update 2: Had to factory restore, but was able to restore almost everything with no problems from a CWM nandroid backup. Thanks for the help.
