my wifi worked for awhile then stopped connecting. tried wiping cache/davlik 3 times. tried re-installing the rom. i nandroided back to an older version which wifi worked before and now it doesn't. tried flashing a different rom no success. tried flashing a different kernal anthrax b-02 via recovery no success so i tried flash gui image app in the market. all with no luck. im on h-boot 1.40.
my 4g connects just not my wifi. if anybody can help it would greatly be appreciated.

The 4G and WiFi drivers are stored in the same directory. Generally, if one is not working due to a mismatch with the kernel, the other one will not work either.
Since you're taken some initial steps to gaurantee the WiFi module definitely matches the kernel version, I would move on two more detailed troubleshooting.
There are two approaches I would suggest to get at the root of the issue quickly without wasting more time/effort.
1) When you toggle WiFi on/off from the Settings screen, what message does it display there? It should also be displaying detailed error out put in at least the logcat if not also in dmesg/kmsg. If you are able to post up these logs, it should help narrow down the issue.
2) Nandroid your current setup, you can revert back later and then flash a completely 100% stock ROM and kernel. Use a modified version of the RUU if needed.
Personally, I would glance at the logs from Step 1, but to make sure the hardware on the device is in deed working 100% and there are no hardware issues, I would revert to 100% stock ROM and kernel. If the WiFi doesn't work with 100% ROM and kernel, this would appear to be a potential hardware issue and I would look into getting the device repaired/exchanged.
If the WiFi works on the 100% stock ROM and kernel, then the issue now lies with either the previous ROMs/Kernels or the methods used to load them.
Hope that helps and appreciate the support!
hey, thanks for the reply and help.
when i try ti connect in the settings, it attempts to connect and obtain the ip address but it doesnt connect and just times out. i dont know how to look at or even find the the logcat or dmesg/kmsg. if you could tell me how to find it, i would post it.
im going to try to flash a stock rom with stock kernal, hope fully its not a hardware issue. i will post my results on the stock rom flash.
i just flashed Shooter_S_Sprint_W...8.651.3_deodex.zip and still no wifi.
am i just screwed or is there another way to fix this problem?

Been looking for a solution for the past 12 hours and have not found any.
Bought a stock i777 with 2.3.4, flashed with SGH-I777_ClockworkMod-Recovery_5.0.2.3 and a stock 2.3.5 AT&T ROM. After ANY kernel is flashed, I seem to lose WiFi capability. I have 5 wireless points near my house and it just gets stuck on "Scanning" and then the WiFi turns off. No points are even listed!
Currently running CW 5.0.2.3 kernel, 2.3.5 AT&T stock ROM, UCKJ1 baseband, kernel 2.6.35.7.
TL-DR - Flashed and lost wifi ability.
Which 2.3.5 ATT stock rom is this that you're referring to? Have a link to where you got it from?
I believe I got it from here: androidadvices.com/update-samsung-galaxy-s2-i777-gingerbread-235-firmware/
Did it work initially when you went to 2.3.5? You said you've tried some different kernels, at what point did you notice the wifi broke?
I even reflashed using kernel + non-rooted system package located in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432
Still no WiFi showing. Just says "scanning" then the wifi shuts off.
Update: Flashed Entropy512's stock package + nonrooted with no luck. No wifi. Flashed zetamax kernel after. Still no wifi.
Showed at that time: version 2.3.4, 1777UCKH7 baseband, 2.6.35.7_ZedomaxStockKernel.
Flashed again with a I777UCKJ1 2.3.5 ODIN package that I know will fix the WiFi. It shows version 2.3.5, 1777UCKJ1 baseband, 2.6.35.7 kernel.
Seems like if I flash ANYTHING else besides this the wifi stops working on me.
Solved problems for myself.
Completely unrooted, reflashed ATTGalaxyS2Unroot_SGH-i777.tar. This brought me back to the original AT&T firmware that came with the phone. I then flashed SGH-I777_ClockworkMod-Recovery_5.0.2.3.tar and subsequently used SuperOneClick 2.2 to root.
WiFi seems to be working fine now. I am now running a stock 2.3.4 ROM, UCKJ1, kernel 2.6.35.7...Clockworks version.
If anyone else is having the same issue this should help.
Thanks for the updates. Sounds like a frustrating battle. Glad all is well.

Hrrrrm Having the same issues and the only way I could manage wifi to get back on was going to 2.3.5 which had it's own set of issues. I tried following your steps but one thing I noticed you said you were running UCKJ1 but isn't that 2.3.5? When I flash the exact same files I am still stuck without working wifi
Still noobing it up here - hopefully I can either stumble upon a fix like you did or spot someone else's that matches my issues...
Avoid that androidadvices.com **** - Half the time they link to firmware that isn't even for the device it claims it is, carrying a high risk of a hardbrick.
I only experienced this when I was trying to upgrade kernels using the SHOstock ROM. I get no wifi with siyah and can't send MMS with Entropy's kernel. That's the only time I've had those issues. Maybe you had a bad download? Glad you got it fixed though.
Just to clarify, those kernels work great with most other ROMS I've tried them on.

Had the same problem
I had this problem (with wifi, not mms) after rooting from 2.3.6. I eventually flashed Zedomax's kernel using mobile odin and wifi functionality was restored.
I still haven't moved on from there, but probably will sometime this week.

Weird, I cannot think of anything that would cause MMS to fail - what sort of errors?
It's happened to me several times after I flash a kernel. when I attempt to send an mms it just hangs and says sending but it never goes out. Could it be a conflict as I have Chomp set as my primary messaging app? Although if that were the case it should be able to send from one or the other but it doesn't. Can't remember for sure but I believe that I may have flashed the kernel cleaning script beforehand in each instance. The only way I've been able to fix it is to reinstall everything starting with the ROM. I'm sure it's user error.
As info, steps I took to try to fix before I restored:
1) reflash kernel
2) flash radio again
3) tried all 5 radios released (not a radio problem I'm guessing)
4) wipe dalvik and reflash kernel
5) run kernel cleaning script and reflash kernel
No dice, it was bizarre. Is this even the sort of event that you could get an error log from? There was no FC or any error message, you know? If it happens again what can I provide you that would help...can I do a logcat or whatever? ;-)
By the way,I could receive mms, just not send.

Factory Data Reset restored wi-fi
I was on UCKK6 (2.3.6) and rooted by flashing Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock (2c)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18576627
and lost wi-fi (scanning then wi-fi shuts off).
Since I was reverting from UCKK6 back to UCKH7, I had to do a factory data reset
(Menu > Settings > Privacy > Factory Data Reset)
based on the info in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432
I got wi-fi back once I did the Factory Data Reset.
I'm having the same problem
Giant noob here =(
Could someone post step by step instructions on how to unroot so that I can restore my wifi?
For example, if in fact doing the factory data reset as described in the post above me is the correct course of action... is there a way to do a backup before so that I do not lose all my apps and stuff?
Thanks

Was having problem with WiFi on my T-Mobile SGS2 where it was seem like it was turning on, then try to start scanning for networks then would automatically turn off...I was pulling me hair out reflashing it with different ROMs, and Radios, and doing a "Factory Data Reset" from inside the main Settings screen fixed the problem...thanks a lot guy!
ok, so i unlocked and rooted my rezound, everything was working 100%, then i start flashing diferent roms and it was conecting to wifi with no problems, however when i flashed ( or tried to flash ) a new kernel ( dont remember which one ) wifi stoped working for me, it scans but doesnt pick up any network. i went back to stock kernel and nothing, re-locked device and installed verizon factory Ruu for the rezound and Wifi still doesnt work. Im going crazy here please help, maybe im flashing the kernel wrong but re-locking and restoring to factory Ruu should have fixed it
I was also having the same issue and tried reinstalling kernals and nandroids. I was loading the kernal through Amon Ra interface directly and no matter what I did I still had issues. Sooo, I revised my recovery process and found that dummy me can't read instruction correctly. The issue was resolved after I did a factory reset on the rom (Ineffablis v1.0) then I followed the instructions for installing the kernal (I'm using the SmartassV2 kernal from dsb9938; flash from SD, then flashmethis file and finally through HBOOT, it's a process ok?), rebooted and I was able to get WiFi working again. I've had this issue whenever one of the additions I was trying did strange things to my phone and have sucessfully restored WiFi (about 10 times for this occurance). I've also had to do a hard reset (pulled the battery) and follow the process to get back to functioning. Hope this helps.
i locked the phone again, and ran the rezound stock Ruu and did factory reset, still not picking up any networks. the wifi doesnt give and error it scans and everything, but for some reason it just doesnt pickup any networks
If you read the complete directions when flashing a rom... They state you will need to flash the wifi module after a fresh install. So just flash the kernel over again and you will have wifi working.
Thanks a lot, finally got it working

Edit
So I'm trying to use chad's AnthraX-CDMA-AOSP-TEST14 kernel with miui 2.2.17 and everything works perfect except wifi doesn't work. I'm on hboot 1.5. I've tried it flashing with flash image gui, booting recovery through command prompt and flashing it there, and several combinations of the two. I've also tried flashing it immediately after doing a super wipe and flashing the rom. Nothing seems to get it working. Any ideas of how I can fix this?
Thanks in advance.

if other users with the same kernel are experiencing the same issue, could be something the developer will have to resolve.
regardless, the basic troubleshooting steps you can take start with logcat. i posted some information previous about this here:
using adb logcat is going to be the best way to find out the exact error the Wifi module is giving. When the WiFi module shows "Error" on the android screen, in the background, it usually dumps troubleshooting information into logcat.
By pulling the logcat information, we're able to more specifically troubleshoot the issue.

after logcat, looking at kernel output in /proc/kmsg would be another place to check for information.
if you want, post back the information you gather and we can troubleshoot from there! hope that helps!

Thanks. I'm checking this out now. In the mean time I thought I'd mention the fact that the wifi doesn't say "error" like it usually does with a bad kernel. What happens is if I try and enable wifi it says turning on forever and my entire phone starts moving extremely slow, even after I disable the wifi, until I restart. From what I've seen no one else appears to be having this issue with this kernel.
Thanks again for the help.
Hi,
I have a major issue with my WiFi and reboots.
Background: I am using an ATT phone within the UK on T-Mobile network.
Randomely, the other day, the WiFi turned off and when I turned it back on, it says Error....
I have tried everything I can think of; wiping and reinstalling rom, erasing everything in fastboot, updating the radio (further question on that) and also kernels! Finally I tried FruitCake to get back to stock, still no luck!!
Radio: Are radio's carrier specific, i.e. could I flash a radio meant for Europe to replace the ATT one? (I am on .36)
What can I do now, please. Thanks

If it helps, i accidentally formatted the PDS partition a while back and the reason for reboot is AP KERNEL PANIC
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am having similar problems. Just last night my phone started rebooting frequently after having turl's v8 build of cm9 for probably a week and it was working great. However, now I have tried wiping everything, putting on different cm7 or cm9 builds and what I have come to the conclusion is anytime I turn the WiFi on, it reboots.
It is not even connecting to anything, just turning it on makes it reboot. I was on the .36 radio with this issue, I tried using the .37P radio and it did not fix it.
Does anyone have any other ideas to try and fix?
Benny,
Do you get the option to turn it on? I'm on cm9 and it'll show up like the attached after it reboots.
No. I dont have that screen. It just says wifi error and Bluetooth crashes as well....

But, how come whenever I flash a new rom, the WiFi will work temporarily, i.e. it would connect, obtain IP etc for a few minutes then just not work until I reflash?
Surely that is not hardware?

Did you use Titanium Backup, and restore apps like Maps, Music, and YouTube? People are saying this can cause issues.
Also did you restore call logs after flashing? I experienced my wifi and mobile networking dying after doing that on only some of the new roms out there lately. It's a bug with one of the base roms, that a lot of custom roms are based off of. It was fixed with a new base rom version, but some of the custom roms have yet to officially update. Updates are under way though. Try out Morrison's 0.7 and see if you get the same result. It's been updated.
Although, you could be having a completely different issue. If you mean you can just leave it running after flashing and the wifi dies, I don't know what to say.

Tried all of the above and still nothing unfortunately. Just want to update on symptoms of the phone if that helps:
Everything eventually gets more and more buggy, even recovery is really laggy and slow
Data will stop after a few days use, and only fix that i know of is to reflash
WiFi does not work, it connects for about 30 seconds after a reflash, but then nothing.
Logcat says - Failed to Load WiFi Driver (after reporting WiFi HUNG)
The phone can crash when I plug in the MicroUSB to charge, when it restarts it says AP KERNEL PANIC.
I have tried everything except for flashing via RSD lite, do you think that could work?
Thanks
BUMP,
Any help at all with this unique situation would be very helpful.

Would like some help. I have flashed CM 11 and can't make calls. It says mobile network not available. Tried flashing AOKP rom as well and same thing. Mobile data works fine, although i have gotten a popup twice that says 'Google Play Services not supported by your device, please contact your manufacturer' (no noticible issues from this, google stuff i've tried so far works). I have included a screenshot so you can see my baseband and rom version, etc.
Now, i had a great deal of trouble getting a rom flashed to start with, CWM put me into a bootloop and TWRP wouldn't flash anything because it said it couldn't mount /storage when i tried. Used Philz advanced CWM (love it btw, will be using it from now on). Still wouldnt flash the hltespr specific CM11 version so had to use the unified hlte version (it gave me the status 7 asserts issue, but editing the asserts out just gave me a bad file error when flashing). I wiped data/cache/dalvik between each flashing. I don't know if any of that would have bearing on this problem, just including any details i can. Any advice?

Have you upgraded your bootloader to NH7? I know most of the newly-updated CM-based ROMs require you to be on NH7 before flashing. That's most-likely why you weren't able to flash the htlespr ROMs. The unified ROMs no longer include the correct APNs for Sprint, so that's why you don't get service on it. I don't know why mobile data works on it.

No, didnt realize that i needed to do that. I'll do some research on it because i don't have any idea how to update the bootloader. If you have a link to a good tutorial that would be wonderful! Thanks!
Ok so i tried that, found this tutorial, followed it, no luck. Tried full wipe/reset after that to see if it would let me install the hltespr versions, still no dice. Sorry, I typically don't have access to XDA forums on the weekend, so couldn't answer your question till now.
You flashed only the baseband/modem, not the Bootloader. If you want to update the Bootloader, you need to use ODIN to flash the Complete OTA NH7 Update.
In order to update the Bootloader, you need to make sure that you use the PC ODIN (not the mobile one) and that you completely power off the phone before you enter download mode (don't access download mode by using the extended power menu when shutting down the phone). I don't think you need to do the battery pull that Freeza had in his instructions (I didn't do it when I ODIN-flashed the NH7 OTA update), but it wouldn't hurt to do it.
Thanks for that, I will try it as soon as I get home tonight! The next thing I had decided to try was to unroot, to back to stock, then try flashing that before I start with the custom recovery and ROM. Do you think I should do that first before doing the whole thing or could that work just flashing that with my phone as-is?

Well, I always recommend a full wipe (data, system, cache, dalvik) when flashing ROMs. I haven't wiped my internal storage or external storage since I got the phone, so that's not really necessary.
I don't think that unrooting your current ROM is necessary. Flashing the ODIN OTA update will automatically remove root access, so that's not an issue. Here's the steps I took when I updated to NH7 and installed my current ROM (see my sig):
Make a Nandroid backup.
I always do this just so I have a "record" of what I left behind. It also allows me to have all of my app data that I can restore via Titanium Backup (you have to buy the Pro version in order to restore specific apps from a Nandroid backup). I always store a copy on my ext. storage and on dropbox.
Do a full wipe
As I mentioned above, I always wipe data, system, and the caches when flashing ROMs. While I have to take some time to get the new ROM exactly as I like it, it minimizes any potential FCs and errors that some people get when dirty flashing.
Install NH7 all-in-one via ODIN
I installed the NH7 via ODIN. Please note that this is the fully stock, unrooted ROM and will also install the stock recovery.
Let the phone boot and connect to Sprint. Update Profile and PRL.
I do this periodically whenever I go back to stock (from AOSP). I rarely have connection issues, but updating the PRL an profile can help with those.
Install a custom recovery using ODIN.
My recovery of choice is TWRP, but others have found just as much success with CWM and Philz. Just make sure that you're installing the correct version of the recovery (4.4.X version, not the 4.2.X version). I always reboot to the main system after installing a recovery, but that's up to you. In the rest of this post, I'll say "TWRP," but I really mean "custom recovery."
[OPTIONAL] Make a Nandroid backup of the stock ROM
I always do this, but I recognize that it's not necessary, especially since we can just ODIN back to this image at any time. I just like having the option of having a stock backup on the device (in case catastrophe strikes while I'm away from a computer).
Use TWRP to flash your AOSP ROM of choice.
If you haven't installed any apps or messed around with the settings, you shouldn't have to wipe before flashing, but (in case you haven't noticed by now), I tend to err on the side of caution, specifically: wiping everything (data, system, and the caches) before I flash anything.
Set up the ROM how you like it and [OPTIONAL] make one last Nandroid Backup
Whenever I set up a new ROM to the exact way I like it (statusbar settings, accounts set up, apps installed and configured, etc), I make a nandroid backup of my device. This allows me to go back to that "fresh" image whenever something happens to the device and I don't have to muddle around fixing those minor tweaks. Again, I tend to err on the side of wiping the phone too often and taking too many backups, but I've rarely had issues with my phone and ROMs because of it (to the point where I can spend most of my XDA time helping others with their phones), so it might be prudent to follow the advice.
Anyways, that's how I upgraded to NH7 and installed a custom ROM. Others may take a less conservative approach and you're welcome to adjust any of the optional steps.
Hope this helps!

OK, did all that successfully, when it went back to stock stiil had the same issue. Mobile data functions, mobile network for calls/SMS doesn't. Did the whole update prl/profile and even tried reactivating from settings, still nothing. Was able to install custom recovery (Philz) and the hltespr CM11 variant instead of the unified generic version. Still has the same problem, mobile network not available. Everything else works perfectly. I did verify in settings that it still wound up as the NH7 after everything I did. Note I did a full reset before each thing that got flashed in this process, and one more for good measure after. Let it boot to the system between steps too.
Lol I've been rooting and switching between ROMs for years and have never encountered anything like this. I'm stumped....

Dumb question but are you a Verizon customer or Sprint?

Sprint, I've had big red before but when they did away with unlimited data it wasn't worth paying their high rates.
Bump!
Anyone have any ideas on this? I am just confounded as to why this continues even after being reset to stock.
Same Issue!!!
I have the exact same issue and have been trying to resolve it for the last 2 days... Did you find a solution?
I have the same problem on a Samsung Mega. LTE and 3G data work but phone won't dial if LTE is active. It WILL voice dial if only 3G is active. Sprint. CM11.
I had this problem after flashing ROMs as well, but went into Settings>Connections>More Networks>Mobile Networks>Network Mode and selected LTE/CDMA....no network had been selected. That fixed me right up. Weird part is, I could still avcess the web without WiFi....but couldn't make calls or ise my bluetooth headset until I had performed the above steps. Hope that helps.
thanks forget the little things reset wifi and sprint cell extender
