I have been experimenting with various book reader apps. When "Cool Reader" is installed it adds itself to the "Complete Action Using" menu. When I touch the Nook book icon on the status bar or select a book to read the menu pops up giving the choice of reader to use. "Moon + Reader and Aldiko do not get added to the menu. Is there anyway to add them to the menu?
I'm also really curious about this. I had the same sort of issue with choosing the default "Home" app after side-loading a couple of launchers. Some appear in the default app, but not all of them. What's different about the apps that don't show up in the list? Could it be like a bit field in the app's configuration settings?
Mantano Reader also gets added to the menu. The stock Nook Reader is called simply "Reader" I wonder if any reader with the word "Reader" in the title gets added? Both "Cool Reader" and "Mantano Reader" have reader in the title. I tried "FBReader" but there is no space between FB and reader and it did not work.
Hmmmmm... I would hope they're not using string checks to figure out what type a given application is, but maybe that leads to something. Maybe there's a registry key (assuming that there's something like a registry) that designates application type.

I'm using this app to read a book but it doesnnt save progress and I can't use the bookmark function. I see the button at the button that I believe to be the book mark key, but nothing happens when I press it.
Its as if that part of the menu isn't there because tapping affeects the page like normal.
Can anyone enlighten me here because this is easily the best PDF app if bookmarking will work.

Mine does the same thing, also the button to the right of it with an arrow on the document doesn't do anything on mine. I know I am pushing them correctly because the table of contents button to the left of the bookmark one works just fine. I just got EZpdf reader a couple of days ago so I don't know much about it either.
Its gotta just be the nooks screen vs what the apps used to.. I guess...
But on a positive note, how sweet is the page turning effect if you drag slowly from the bottom corner...
ill answer for you, its really sweet.

Oh.... interestingly enough, today when I opened my book from the recent docs tab, it loaded right to the chapter I stopped at..? I confirmed this by killing all apps and then starting ezpdf again and sure enough I got the same result.

Can someone please tell me how to highlight or underline text so I can come back to it easily later?
In my experience, you have to save the document in the internal memory (download folder, for instance). when close it wipe left to right ove the left side of the screen to see the options side panel amd close the document clicking on the X. Doing this, the document should open where you left it off. Bookmarks might work then, but my problem, when i sync the document in the cloud and open it in another device the bookmarks have dissapered. real annoying after spending time bookmarking all the important pages.
Hope this is useful guys
I have thought about new hack :
Select a default application for a given time only, then revert to open application selection (something like expire default application selection)
How to :
Replace "Use by default for this action." checkbox and text by a drop down list in the application section window (named : "complete action with"). The list could contain items like :
No default (no default app is set)
Remember for 10 minutes (set selected app as default for 10 minutes only, then revert to no default)
Remember for 30 minutes
Remember for 1 hour
Always use by default for this action (current behaviour available)
Sample use case :
Click a link in Gmail
Browser selection appears
Select "Remember for 30 minutes"
Tap "Opera Mini" (because you don't have 3G coverage where you are for instance)
Opera mini opens
Go back to Gmail, tap another link
Opera mini opens straight away (as the default app, no app selection window)
After 30 minutes, when the browser is triggered, the "Application selection" window appears again and you can chose stock browser for a while if you have better network coverage...
What do you think about that ? Has anyone seen that before?
If no, if a friendly developper could implement that, it would be awesome!
It would help a lot when juggling with different apps in different contexts lasting a given time.
up
Anyone interested in that hack ?
I have rephrased my idea realizing that it was not clear enough in my original post. Could some of you guys give me a feedback on that?
I think it could be really helpful especially with the different browsers avalaible and the various features they each offer.
Let me know, even if you think it's useless...
The closest thing I have ever found is Smart Browser Chooser.
It isn't exactly what you've suggested, but it lets you assign different browsers based on network connection.
I'm not a developer, but from what I can tell, in order to make something that works like you have suggested, the entire default action chooser would have to be replaced.
Or, as an alternative, a new "default action" program could be created, similar to Smart Browser Chooser, that would be the actual default you would choose for whatever context you want. When this program is ran, it would list the options in the way you have indicated. However, as far as I can see, this new program would have to be written specifically for each android context.
Thanks for your answer!
This could do the trick, I'll try your app and see how it turns out. Though I suspect it's not as flexible as what I expected.
I would still fancy an overlying app on top of default app selection to achieve temporary default (excellent idea!). If anyone ever step by something like that, let me know
I have figured out a way to copy and paste on the Nook Tablet (well, in editable text fields at least).
You will need to install Hacker's Keyboard, as well as Swype. There is another thread with detailed instructions how to do that here: [Tutorial] Installing alternative Keyboards on the NT.
To copy text, you hold down shift on Hacker Keyboard and use the arrow keys to highlight the text you want to cut/copy. Long press on settings button on Hacker Keyboard, then change keyboards to Swype. Your text should still be highlighted. Then use the Swype keyboard shortcut ("swype" from the Swype button to c) to copy the text. This copies the text to the NT clipboard. Then navigate to wherever you want and paste the text using Swype-v. I have tested and this works even between different apps, so there is a system clipboard.
The copy paste shortcuts in Swype are like pressing ctrl-x,c, or v in Windows (cut, copy, paste, respectively). Also I should note for developers that the stock ROM does not seem to disable the clipboard, it's just that there is no way to highlight text, and then copy and paste it as these functions are disabled in the stock UI. But we can get around that using this method.
I know, it's a couple steps and a slight hassle, but it will have to do until one of the CM (or other ROMs) are ready. This method is still better for things like copying 15 character long gibberish passwords from KeePass though, for example.
Nice fix dude ....
Will help me till CM7 (or 9) gets ready ...
Is there any app to do this ? T'would be great if a program was written for this otherwise...
Can see it becoming hit (feature to button saviour maybe)
Shortly after posting this, I caught up on my reading and realized that an alpha version of CM7 had already been released. So I thought that my little workaround had been immediately deprecated. Well, it seems that now there are some issues with CM7, so maybe (at least in the short term) my little trick will see some use after all.
There are still reasons to stay with the stock B&N firmware, so the tip is still quite useful.
A small update. In another thread here about Keyboard?, ckevinwelch turned me on to an app called Keyboard Manager, which allows you to switch keyboards based on orientation. I now have Swype in vertical and Hackers in landscape. This is handy for all sorts of things, but especially copy and paste because the part where you switch between keyboards is faster.
Also (and unrelated to copy/paste), need to move over a few characters? Or insert the cursor precisely when editing (I always have a problem with this, maybe it's my fat fingers)? Just rotate to landscape, use Hackers arrow keys for precise positioning, then rotate back to Swype for the majority of typing. It's like getting the best of both keyboards, very handy!
I want to make a little addition.
Opera Mobile Web Browser has embedded selection and copy/paste functions, which are independent from keyboard or other apps.
I've found a way to enable the copy & paste permanently for all text fields - instructions & video at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1534757. Requires root.
I discovered a way to copy and paste using google docs. This doesn't help inputting urls or passwords, but it sure is handy to use when writing text into your Nook. The copy/paste comes as part of the google docs app. What's really neat is that your writing goes into the cloud and you can access it with any other computer. So since people where mentioning copy/paste function, I thought I'd add this comment.
Is there a way to add more options to pop up menu, which popup when a .pdf or .chm book is tapped/clicked inside the File Manager (like Astro).
I have installed
ezPDF, Foxit PDF, Quick office along with Polaris office (It is a stock app in GT-P7500). When I tap .pdf file a popup menu opens up saying ''complete action using'' the above apps
If I tap a .chm book a popup menu opens up saying ''complete action using'' Cool reader or Script Manager, it does not show HyReader or CHM Reader or Moon Reader or Best Ebook Reader
Is there a way to change it
Please don't ask me to ''Get a Windows 7 tablet?''

Click to collapse
Get a Window--- Just kidding
Normally it matters that the app that supports the file type allows it to be enabled as a default app for that certain file extension. I use the normal Adobe Reader for pdf and I don't really mind what app it opens, Android is still growing, you can however contact the developer of the app you find most comfortable and let them know about enabling it as a default app for that specific filetype. They do appreciate feedback and also you would experience the same with Mango based tablet's.
You can however clear default's in Application Manager.
Thanks a lot for the info
I have the official (I think) keyboard case (pogo pins, etc...) and have some questions.
1) I am getting the Android "Select Input Method" popup a lot when using the keyboard. This is the result of my being a little too heavy handed on the shift-key when pressing the SPACE bar. Shift-Space brings up that dialog, but I'd like for it not to appear when I'm typing. Haven't found a way to disable it yet. Any ideas?
2) Is there a way to add functions like 'page-up/down' or control-home & control-end to jump through documents? I miss having those kinds of functions that were available on my previous tablet.
Thanks.
