[Q][View] Battery/Screen Question - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

Hello, everybody. Newb here (only have had the HTC Evo View 4G for a couple of days now). I have a question about the battery and screen. Is it regular for the screen to use up about ~60 percent of the battery? (According the usage stats). I find that the screen is bright, even on the lowest setting.
Also, I have a question about the battery. It seems to be draining a little quick (I am using lowest brightness and WiFi only). Could some people share how long their battery usually lasts for regular usage? I don't think it's a hardware issue. Like I've said, I've only had it for 2 days, so I don't know if I still need to wait a little.
Thanks!

The screen is one of the biggest battery drainers (if not the biggest) on tablets. So if you are using the tablet a lot, and the screen is on for long periods of time, then 60% seems normal. I don't have my Flyer with me right now to check what my % for screen is.
Battery drain is going to depend a bunch on how much you are using your View, and for what. With moderate usage, I can get around 2 days on a charge. I'd say that is about average for me. But if you are downloading big files and gaming, and/or have the screen on a lot, it can be significantly less.

Okay, that makes sense. The battery life seems to be getting better. One more question. I want WiFi to turn off after a certain amount of time once the screen timeouts. Is there any way to do this in the settings or with an app? The settings (official 3.2) has a WiFi timeout policy that gives three options:
Switch from WiFi to mobile data when screen is off
Never switch WiFi off
Never switch WiFi off when plugged in
I live in Canada and don't have a plan. Would using the first option drain more battery because it is looking for a connection? Or should I use the third option?
Thanks again.

Hmm, not sure. I have the WiFi only version of the Flyer, and on mine the first choice is just "When screen turns off". The first choice on your View is weird. Mobile data always uses more power than WiFi, if both are available. I don't see why you would ever want that.
BTW, I'm at home and have access to my Flyer now. Battery usage for screen is 52% for me. So I'd say 60% you mentioned is pretty normal.

You should also take into account, unless you've taken steps to turn it off/remove it, Cell standby might also be causing your battery life to take a hit. Since the View is set up to also be able to receive text messages, out of the box it's constantly trying to connect to Sprint's cellular network, even if you have mobile data turned off. This thread discusses ways to deal with it. Cell standby used to be one of the biggest users of my battery. Now, it's no longer a problem and I've seen a major increase in battery life.
As for the WiFi issue, the first choice in the settings actually says "When screen turns off (uses more mobile data)." That doesn't mean that it automatically switches mobile data on if you've turned it off in the settings by selecting that option. It's worded that way because the View is designed to be used on Sprint's network, so under normal circumstances it is assumed that if you turn WiFi off, you'll have a data plan and automatically connect to the mobile data network. If you don't have an account with mobile data from Sprint, and you've turned off mobile data in the settings, it won't be an issue because you have nothing to connect to.

That makes much more sense.

Okay, thanks everybody. I really appreciate it. With heavy usage (basically using it all the time) I'd get about 6 hours and 10 minutes. Is that normal for everybody else?
Also, I have a couple of more questions, if you guys don't mind.
First of all, could rooting my device boost my battery life? Would it give me more access to settings like screen brightness?
And, do apps running in the background use battery life or are they 'frozen' until active? This sort of leads me into my next question. Is having 400-500MB of RAM always being used normal? Is the OS using all of it?
And I notice that when I put my tablet in airplane mode (to kill the 4G radio) I lose access to Bluetooth. Is this normal and will turning off airplane mode for a minute be a battery drain?
Thanks again, guys.

Answers:
Rooting won't necessarily boost battery life, but does give you ways to access more system items if you want using apps that take advantage of root.
Android attempts to keep non-rumming apps in memory so that it can load them faster in the future (Ram is much faster than SD memory). 80% Ram full is typical.
Airplane mode turns off all radios, BT, Wifi, GPS, 3g.
There are apps in the market that can turn various things on / off based on your environment / time / conditions

You don't need root access to adjust screen brightness. Settings -> Screen -> Brightness.

Airplane mode turns off all radios initially, but then you can turn almost all of them right back on (except for the cellular radios). I run mine in airplane mode all the time to keep the cellular radio completely inactive, but I still use WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth when I need/want them, and they all work great. Are you running Gingerbread or Honeycomb? I do seem to remember some mentions of not being able to use Bluetooth in airplane mode on Gingerbread. It works perfectly fine on Honeycomb.
And you can turn off the 4G radio and all data service without turning on airplane mode (Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile network). Doing this turns off all radios that receive data from the cellular network, but it doesn't turn all cellular functions off since the View is also set up to receive text messages. That's what airplane mode or any of these options address.

What I meant by adjusting the screen brightness was being able to control its range more than I can right now (I feel that even the lowest setting can be too much). But it seems that rooting/installing a custom ROM wouldn't do too much for the battery.
But my issue with airplane mode is that I can't turn on Bluetooth with it (Bluetooth is 'grayed out'). I am running official Honeycomb.

Did you try tapping on the box for Bluetooth in the settings even though it looks like you can't, and did you try using a widget to turn it on? I'm using stock OTA Honeycomb, and Bluetooth works perfectly fine for me while in airplane mode. I can turn it on in the settings (the box does look a little "grayed out," but you can still select it) or via a homescreen widget. If you can't turn it on with either of those, then it would seem that you've got some other type of problem. It works fine for me. I just tested it out again.

I just tried it. It seems to not be working for me, but it doesn't seem like a glitch but something built into the OS (I tried with a widget and it did a little 'no' animation). It's alright, I rarely use Bluetooth anyway.
Thanks for all of your help (plus everybody else, too)!

I'd venture to say it's not something built into the OS. If it is built into the OS, then there's a glitch that allows me to use it under the same circumstances, and glitches rarely enable functionality. They almost always cause a device to lose functionality like you're experiencing. I'd be curious to know if anyone else is having the same issue you're having.

Last time I have ran battery test on my Flyer I ran it for almost 11 days on one charge. Yeap, 11 days. I mostly used Flyer as a notepad, checked orders on website couple of times a day, read emails. One day I played a game for about 20 minutes. At the end I set up and tested Plex and Google Music. I stopped the test at 11% charge. Overall screen was on for a bit over 4 hours (40%). Wi-fi on for 16 hours (only 4% ??) according to stats. That's pretty much it. Tablet idle 43%. Fairly light usage, but I mostly was testing how much of useable time I can get out of it. 11 days is a pleasing result.

[Q] SGS2 wifi constantly scanning

Hi all,
The Wifi on my SGSII is constantly scanning even though it is connected to my home wifi network (a WPA/WPA2 PSK secured connection on a G band router). The signal strength is "excellent" and I have the phone sitting right next to the router. Further, I have network notification turned off ( unchecked) and under advanced settings, my Wifi sleep Policy is set to "never".
Sprint users have reported exactly the same problem on the Epic Touch 4G" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272226 ). Has anyone else been experiencing the same issue on their ATT SGS2 ? I would be very grateful if someone could post a solution for this issue.
Thanks in advance
J

Scan rate is bumped up significantly when you're in the settings menu.
Have you confirmed via logcat that it's scanning frequently outside of the settings menu? It shouldn't be in that case - but without logcat it's almost impossible to tell.

Entropy,
What should I be looking for in logcat? I have Betterbattery stats installed and according to that, Wifi scan time is 8+ hours even though Wifi on time is only 2+ hours. That doesn't seem to make sense, but what do I know.
I am running UnNamed 1.3.1.

I believe BBS is reporting scan time improperly. I've seen that in a few threads.
Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk
You're probably right, except now scan time doesn't even show.
I have also observed this on my phone.
I have a Samsung Galaxy IIs, using a Sony Ericsson MW600 BT handsfree as well as a Pioneer car Bluetooth handsfree system.
I have not measured anything yet, but I notice that when the Wi-Fi scanning is going on, I get significant disturbances on both of my Bluetooth hands-free sets. Listening to music is without a hitch, but talking on the phone (Norwegian GSM - operator Telenor) is terrible.
i also noted this after installing the OTA update to 2.3.6 today. I just rooted mine yesterday after reading 54+ pages to make sure i understood everything. i had a cappy and loved installing new roms but have not taken the plunge yet on the sgs ii. I haven't noticed a huge difference in battery yet, but it has only been a couple of hours since the update.
What ROM are you running? You can edit the build.prop to change how often it looks for networks. It is the line "wifi.supplicant_scan_interval=xx". I set mine to 180 which is 3 minutes, some ROM's set it really low. Also the scan rate is bumped up significantly when you're in the settings menu like Entrophy said.
Hi,
I had the same problem where my WIFI was fluctuating.... I dont know if this is the problem/ solution but this is what happened...
My SGS 2 is already rooted and unlocked. I had flashed the Entrophy DD 12/23 first then I had flashed Unnamed Custom ROM. After rebooting the phone, I saw the Wifi was not stable. So I again did a "Wipe Factory Data Reset" and "Wipe Cache Partition" and then installed the Unnamed Custom ROM from the SD Card. My Wifi is pretty stable now.
I am not sure if you guys had this issue when flashing a ROM but this seemed to fix it.

I have written about this wifi-battery drain a while back here in XDA.
When I used to have my Nokia symbian cell phone I used to flash custom roms
and there were a lot of nice new features after flashing.
A couple of the really nice battery saving mods were:
#1: added option to change the amount of wifi milliwatt output from 18 milliwatts (default) to 3 milliwatts
which is more than enough if the phone is no more than 20-25 feet from the wireless router.
(the mod gave the option of 3mw,6mw,12mw & 18mw)
Saves a lot of battery life.
Don't know why none of the DEVS have addressed this issue yet.
#2: added a mod so once the wifi establishes a connection it no longer scans
at all unless the connection is disconnected or lost.
So in other words, the phone only scans for wifi until it connects.
Right now I am connected to wifi with my phone and yet in settings it displays "scanning"
non-stop-constantly even though in wifi settings it displays "connected".
Why should the phone be scanning for wifi if it's already connected? (I have no idea).
Don't know why none of the DEVS have addressed this issue yet either.
Both of these mods really made a noticable difference in battery life
for for me since I do use the wifi feature in my phone a lot.
Hopefully one of the DEVS can look into these issues soon.
Now someone mentioned wifi constant scan, I noticed mine is doing the same thing. I leave the wifi setting screen on, it re-scans every 3 seconds!

Power control - Not likely, unless there is some documented power control already in the driver it's not going to happen. We're in a bad enough state as it is trying to make the chip not fire interrupts at 1 Hz on the Infuse.
Broadcom is one of the least open source friendly chipset manufacturers on the planet - their drivers have NO comments or documentation whatsoever, and datasheets are not available.
The rescan stuff is probably only addressable on Cyanogenmod, messing with it would require source code for the userland wifi management stuff.

As stated earlier in this thread - this is by design. It is assumed that if you're in the settings screen you want to change networks and have an up-to-date list.
I also am having this problem. I am running the rooted UKK6 from entropy512. After turning on my wifi, my battery drained from 90% to 70% in 5 hours with no use. My android OS is running at 80-90%. I don't have any extra apps except for 3g watchdog and CPUSpy and BBS. I do have Go launcher and GoSMS installed. As soon as I turn wifi off, i can see my battery level off under settings. I have searched for the last 2 days for a "fix". no luck.

Try doing a clean flash using "wipe data/factory reset" in CWM
recovery and then see if the phone has normal battery drainage.
(which it will if you flash the UnNamed v2.2.1 custom rom)
Then install one app at a time so you can find out exactly which
app is the culprit that causes your excessive battery drain.
This is the best way to trouble shoot battery drainage issues.
You will see that your battery drainage issue is not caused by
the custom rom, but it is caused by a few apps which are just
not very battery friendly.
The UnNamed v2.2.1 rom is the best custom rom currently
available for our i777 phones and it has outstanding battery life.
Good Luck!

Drain problems - read my known battery drainers thread. A lot of people are having problems, there is no fix, and there won't be until all the people complaining start actually collecting some data.

[Q] What apps are the biggest battery killers?

What app (not just category but actual app) do you find is the biggest drain on your battery?
I get about 12 hours on a full charge and see about a 1% drain every 5-7 minutes!
I am about to put a new ROM on my Note and since I tend to run it loaded with apps that I collect, I was wondering if anyone has a list of biggest amp-drainers.
Some apps have settings that let you modify their behavior (K9 Mail comes to mind) but settings can be a bit confusing when it comes to balancing utility to power drain.
So...that being said...
Give me a list of apps that you run that you know kill your battery anyway some that are so stingy they get the Android Scrooge Award for battery use.
Also...
what are some of your best general power-saving tips for power-users?
Use a black background.
Turn off all your radios if you're not using them.
Leave your GPS off and just use WiFi for locations if you need to. If you don't use locations, turn them off.
Anything with a light background will drain your battery quicker on an AMOLED. Always use black wherever you can.
Never let your battery go below 20% charge.
Don't use a task killer - it was necessary for the older versions of Android, it's not now.
Set your Facebook/Twitter/Weather/Stocks etc. to sync every 3, 6 or 12 hours, as opposed to instantly (I still sync mail instantly).
These are a few of my runtime-prolonging tips. As for apps, anything that pulls data, displays a lot of white or moving pictures, uses a radio/GPS, and runs constantly will be the biggest drain. Things like turning off notifications in Tapatalk/XDA etc. can save you a lot of juice.
If you want to know exactly what is going on with your battery, you can look in the settings to see what exactly is draining the battery (sorry, I cant remember exactly offhand where it is).
Personally, I use an app called Battery Widget Pro by 3c that gives me more information than I ever wanted to know about exactly what is going on with my battery (just look at the screenshots on the market).
For me, the biggest drainer is the screen and phone calls but I only have a few apps installed.
All of those are good, and I want to add that under advanced in Wifi, there is an option to turn off Wifi during sleep mode.
Usually it is three choices, Always on, On when charging only, and off.
Make sure to turn it off during sleep if you don't need it. That can be a battery drainer as well.

Do keep in mind tho that rogue apps or those that are scheduled to perform network activities will fall back to cellular data if wifi is off.
BeyondPod is one such app, I have it on a schedule to download new podcasts at certain times of the day and if wifi is off, it will use cellular data if available. However, BeyondPod does have an option to only download on Wifi, but not all apps offer this.

This has been like this for the past several roms I've ran. Basically when the screen is off, I do not receive text messages. When I turn the screen on, I get all of my notifications basically instantly. Is there a setting I'm missing here that shuts off connection when the screen is off? Right now I'm on venusaur rom.

This happened to me once when I somehow had sync over 3G disabled, AND have the setting to disable wifi when the screen sleeps enabled
Check account & sync in settings, and check the advanced wifi menu in settings as well.
I always leave wifi off because I have an unlimited plan. So I do have it so wifi shuts off when the screen is turned off and to never auto turn on. Not sure if that has anything to do with not receiving texts.
In accounts and sync I do not see any sort of option to sync over 3G. Overall its enabled though.

Thats what I thought which is why I can't seem to think of what would be causing this. Sometimes it comes through four-five minutes late and other times it will not come through at all until I turn the screen on. This has only been happening relatively recently and I'm in a constant five bar area.

I've been having this for a while regardless of rom :/
Are you in some kind of "power-save" mode?
No power save mode that I know of.
Best advice I can think of is to run a ruu again. Then clean install a Rom. That way you will be starting fresh.

Are any of you running anything like Juice Defender? Maybe you can download Juice Defender to help you find the option to allow screen off operations.
Alternatively, you can try going to: Settings, Power, Power Mode, change to High Performance.
> using my Rezound/Vigor
No Juice Defender or anything here.
And I just noticed this. I went to send a text message and turned the screen off. I went to check twenty minutes later to see if there was a reply and the timer was still going. After a few seconds of the screen being on it said text sent. This is a huge issue.

Did you try Gorillas suggestion above?
My Zound sleeps too deeply for me unless

Worth a try....
I don't know where that option is. He said it was under power settings, but there is no option to select modes from there.

choose it and see Economy, Norbal, and High Performance.
Choose High Performance and your radios will behave better, at least
mine do.....

After 7 hours of use I’m already at 15% and through out the day I barley use my phone. Its like this just about everyday. I use my phone about an hour of the entire day of web surfing and Facebook usage etc. The rest of the day I’m only texting and maybe taking 3 or 4 phone calls that last 10 mins. How much battery could that possibly take? A flip phone can do that and last 3 days..
I used my iPhone 4S much more during the day then I do the galaxy S3 because the S3 has terrible battery life.
On my iPhone I would have about 22% after everyday of using it for 11 hours down time = sleep and 4 hours of usage = texting, , phone calls, web surfing, games etc.
I don’t play games or watch movies on my S3. Only texting, instagram, facebook, websurfing which is about an hour a day usage. Also a couple minutes of GPS usage on some days.
What can I do to fix this? I don’t want a bigger battery that will make my phone any thicker.
I have pictures below showing usage through out the day and usage under battery.
Please help!
Thanks!
You screen is using most of your battery. Check the brightness levels. Are they on max or close to it? Switch it to auto

Oh thats easy.
You're phone is always "Awake". It doesn't go into Deep sleep like everyone elses. If you take a look at the first picture you linked with the graph, it shows that the phone is always AWAKE.
For comparison, I have attached mine as a reference but something is DEFINITELY keeping your phone awake.

Can't really see anything that stands out per say...
If you see anything on that thread or any apps on your phone that you think could be keeping it awake, just uninstall them. I would suggest trying to remove them a few at a time just to narrow down which ones are keeping the phone awake.
Also, apparently this app helps a lot (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bvalosek.cpuspy) and Better Battery stats should give you a better idea of which apps use the CPU while your phone is trying to sleep.
Oh and remove any task managers you have installed.. Those tend to be the worst offenders.
One last thing, found this on another forum:
- Don't use an automatic task killer--not even the one that comes with the phone. Reboot your phone and look at what's running. If anything that you've installed is running and there's no reason for it, then uninstall it and find an alternative that behaves. Ignore any stock apps that run on boot as I've found them to be more or less benign.
- Weather widgets, live wallpapers, news/social feeds, any app or service that you use that runs--do without it if you can. If you can’t do without it, lengthen it’s refresh time.
- Don't use antivirus
- Set your WIFI sleep policy to never. The default is "turn off when screen turns off". This will cause the wifi to reconnect every time you open the phone. From any Home Screen select Menu/Settings/Wireless & Networks/ and then use the Menu button to see some new options - select Advanced. Then select Wifi Sleep Policy and set it to Never. Home key to return to Home Screen.
- If you have access to wifi, leave it toggled on as it is more efficient than 3G. Wifi consumes less battery power than 3G.
- I leave GPS toggled on too by the way. Apps use it as needed. When I'm done with Maps or an app that uses it, I'm sure to return to the home screen so GPS can stop. Under wireless settings turn on "Google location services" so that an app is able to use network resources to get your location instead of GPS. I have "VZW location services" turned off--don't know why that option is even there. By the way, I increase the speed of voice output > text to speech > speech rate because I like the directions to get spit out faster. That saves a bit of battery. Turning off the display and just listening for directions help. Also, often I just get the directions and then exit back to the home screen: GPS uses so much battery I try to get it over with ASAP.
- Under Accounts, click on any account listed and turn off sync for any items that you're not interested in syncing. For example, Google Books if you don't use it. Don't use Backup Assistant--I prefer syncing my contacts with Google. You don't need both. Also go into your contacts > menu > display options > backup assistant > UNCHECK. Also do contacts > menu > more > settings > contact storage > and select your Google account and "remember this choice"
Are you on the 3G network a lot or weak signal areas? Is your phone hot around the bottom? If yes to both, most likely it's because of the system attempting to find a better signal. When I was swapping out my SIMs, in various countries, I only have 3G network and my battery fully drains in 7hrs at idle. The only way i can go a whole day is to place my phone into airplane mode or wifi only to conserve the battery.
my battery runs at-most 13 hrs........................

My Galaxy S3 Battery Life Sucks Please Help! 15% After Only 7 Hours.
I’ve been having this same problem sense I got my phone about 2 months ago but now I’m finally just tired of it! My phone is rooted, using the stock ROM.
What I do to help battery life:
- Every morning I hold the home button and kill multitasking and kill all running aps in the background then I open autokill which automatically kills running apps in the background that are not needed.
- I have power saving enabled
- Easy Battery Saver running

Welcome to smartphones. The calls alone will drain the battery. Seven hours isn't horrible for all that. It isn't a flip phone.
why your phone is always awaking?

maybe you have to flash a new rom
If you want, you could try to flash a custom ROM. I had the same problem that you have, and I flashed Revolutionary S5, and now my phone lasts minimum two days with the same usage, maybe a bit more.
Too bad Tony Stark hasn't gotten involved

Titanium Backup will assist a little bit. When you do a backup of an apk it will tell you if the application is running. You can find all kinds of sneaky apps this way. Many of them were ones I didn't use and didn't really want. That will probably yield minimal results, though. Keeping a black background helps on my S3. Colors, widgets, and live backgrounds will drain the battery. Turn off the menu and back key lights. You know the buttons are there. Turn off all haptic feedback and key press sounds. Of course, try to lower the screen brightness. Leaving my data and sync on hasn't caused me any problems, but you will save some battery by turning them off when not in use. I also read a post about hidden menu options that ran even when they weren't meant to. That was an issue that destroyed battery life. Some ROMs also have settings for data connection type. You'll save power by telling your phone to not worry about gaining signals like 4g, 3g, etc. As other people have said, try out some ROMs that make battery life a big priority.
it CAN get better
if you want to have a good battery life, use custom rom and kernel (or a modified stock like omega rom), watch out for wakelocks + apply these settings:

Stamina?

I've had my Z5C for about 10 days. I'm relatively happy with it, except for the battery life. Much worse than my old Z1C. Less than 24 hours of battery; my Z1C always got 24+. So, last night I tried the Stamina mode for the first time. Very UNIMPRESSED! I must be missing something.
1. In Stamina mode I still loss 15% of my charge in 7 hours.
2. With Stamina mode on it takes a couple minutes for my Wi-Fi to reconnect once I turn the screen on. Hardly usable.
What am I missing? Are any of you happy with the battery life? Does it improve over time? If you use Stamina mode, what are your settings and what is a typical battery discharge amount over an 8 hour period of non-use? Suggestions?
Thanks.
Im quite pleased with the battery life. 2-3 days with abt 4 hrs screen on time. I have disabled few services and applications from settings. There is a thread about it. Last night battery dropped only about 2%
For starters, disable location and untick "Scanning always available" under Wifi>Advanced Settings. Disable photo analyser service under All apps. Try these out first

Thanks for you reply. Some questions/points:
1. What am I losing if "Location" is off? For instance, GPS, weather?
2. Can you explain what "Scanning always available" does?
3. Couldn't find photo analyser service. Any thoughts?
4. I've removed set of widgets created with Zooper Widget Pro. I've read that it's a battery hog; any opinions?
5. I'm using an old weather app, BeWeather, because I like its widgets. I did notice that under "Location" BeWeather showed high battery use, while the Google apps listed showed low battery use. Any weather apps with widgets suggestions that might have low battery use?
Again, I appreciate your reply.

I might be wrong on some points, if this changed over the years, but...
1) If android/google isn't searching for location constantly, it will remember the last known location. So only your approximate location will be known, and apps that use it more specifically (like google fit, running apps etc.) will be less effective.
2) It means that your phone will connect to Google servers, even when Wifi is off. As far as I know.
3) It should be in your list with all apps. If it's not, I have no clue where else you should look.
5) I use "transparent clock & weather", and I never ask it to update his location constantly. Instead, I use a fixed location. Even when I'm 100km away from here, the weather will still be about the same, so for me that's enough.
Can't you look at the battery usage stats and disable anything that is near the top that you dont need?
I find the normal drain while using it is about the same as even my old phone. However standby is much much better. I used the phone sparingly and it lasted me about 2.5 days. On average, its lasting me about 2 days. On heavy usage days, I only get a day out of it. I havent had it very long so more testing is needed. There was only one instance where it drained really fast. I was in a plane on the ground. It seems that the reception is rather poor so it has to try alot harder to maintain a signal.

I looked at the power management stats. Oddly, the battery usage is:
Screen 34%
Cell standby 8%
Phone idle 6%
Android system 4%
Android OS 4%
Nothing else is listed. Under App Power Consumption it shows "Currently no apps to report". I don't feel that I'm a heavy user; minimal calls; minimal browser use; minimal texts. I have a weather widget with clock on both screens I've set up. The weather is set to update every 30 minutes. I've stopped using a couple widgets, as mentioned above, but I still don't see a significant improvement.
When you say "standby is much much better", are you talking about Stamina mode, or something else?
Thanks again.
Unless you use google maps, location doesn't matter all that much. Also if you need it in any app, you will be prompted to enable it. Once your work is done, you can turn it off again. Location actually does eat a considerable amount of battery.
About "scanning always available". It means that the phone will constantly be looking for wifi even if the wifi is turned off. This causes standby battery drain so it's good to leave it off.
I'm not sure about the widgets though as I haven't used them.
Lastly, photo analyser service should be in Settings>Apps>All Apps. Disable it to improve performance and battery life as reported by many users here and on talk.sonymobile.com
Cheers

Re: item 3. I had already disabled.
Any more suggestions? I turned on Stamina last night; still lost about 2% an hour. At the rate I now see (including using Stamina at night), I might get 36 hours of usage per charge, and I'm not a heavy user. Nowhere near some of the reports I've seen. I've turned off location, turned off weather updates for 6 hours of the night, turned off scanning always available in Wi-Fi, disabled photo analyzer, and removed widgets that seem to be "on" all the time. Additional questions:
1. I noticed that I have "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" set to always; is that OK, or do most of you have that off?
2. Are you all using the regular Stamina mode or the Ultra mode?
3. What is your setting for "Queue background data"?
That's it for now. But I expect to have more questions until I see the 2-3 day range you all talk about.
Thanks.

Try another night with Network mode set to gsm only. Just a thought
---------- Post added at 11:07 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:53 PM ----------
I actually lose 0-1% overnight (in 8 hours on an average) on GSM only. I usually keep it on 2G. So basically my overnight battery drain is negligible. Also, I don't even use Stamina mode

Thanks for your reply. I've set the network to GSM Only. Seems to help a bit, but I'm still getting 2% battery drainage PER HOUR with Stamina ON! during the night. Again, looking at all the suggestions. The only one that I really use and would rather not disable is "Location". All of the apps under location show "Low battery use". I also prefer to have my screen brightness always around 90% (old age ). Can you tell me what widgets you have on your screens? I'm thinking I'll slowly delete each widget, if any of you think that'll help. I can live with 30+ hours of battery, but it's far from what I was expecting after reading the reviews. My Z1C had better battery duration.

I just have the walkman and clock widgets. Also, i switched wifi off before going to sleep or if it is switched on, i turn on stamina. Also, i have all sorts of sync disabled as i sync manually. My battery is nearly as good as that on Z3c (which is pretty amazing). Maybe some app is acting up on your part :/ I have nothing else to suggest man.

Not the weather app. It's set to not update from 11pm to 5am. Tried the location off, no improvement. WiFi was off using Stamina. Something else is going on that uses 2% an hour no matter what.

Aaaand I've run out of ideas. Try gsam batrery monitor from the playstore. Let it run through the night. That should give you an idea of the consuming apps
Thanks for your reply. I turned off my WiFi last night; only a 4% total loss. Tonight I'll try both the WiFi off and stamina, in addition to your battery monitor suggestion. Getting close! ?
Lost just 2% over 7 hours tonight! Stamina on. But I think my problems were all caused by my Bluetooth. I have 2 speakers on either end of my place that were always on. I also had my phone's BT always on. I noticed that at times both speakers showed being connected at the same time. I suspect that BT was constantly connecting and disconnecting as I moved through the apartment. I've turned off the BT on my phone. Battery life much improved. It's been 21 hours since my last charge and I'm still at 58%.
Thanks to all who responded.
