What is causing echo on phone calls? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Running ICScrewD 1.6.2 currently but I noticed this on UnNamed 2.2.1 (latest) and both prior updates on both roms. When I'm on a phone call I'm getting an echo of my own voice. I've factory reset and reflashed 3 times.
Any ideas? Lovin this phone and roms but this is driving me crazy

Having the same issue with ICScrewD 1.6.2. Noice suppression is turned off and that is what is 'suppose' to be causing it. Supposed to to be fixed in 1.7.

every rom ive tried had it, i think it was like that on stock....i dont hear myself, but people on the other end say it has a bad echo.

I have heard, but cannot confirm, that some cases can cause this echo.

your phone is tapped. they are listening! ;p

When a friend of mine is using his bluetooth earpiece, I hear my voice echoing. When he turns off his earpiece, the echoing stops.

Move out of the cave.

Not exactly impressed with call quality. Weird to make a kick ass device but when it comes down to the major function of the device, its lacking big time!

Don't know if this ever happens to you guys but on my cases, several times, when I was talking with my friend, suddenly high-pitch hiss came then I heard strange voice (of course, not my friend on the other end), sounded like Arabic (couldn't confirm though), lasted for around 10 or 15 seconds then gone, my friend was back on.
Weird!
Was terrorists listening to my conversation?

I've always had excellent voice audio on this phone and a good amount using a bt headset. However since the 2.3.6 update no matter what rom I use Im hearing that echoing more and more. Noise suppression on or off same echo. Between this and the bt hid being messed up I'm gonna switch back to unnamed 1.3.2 worked flawless for awhile for me

It's more than likely not your phone. I've had echoing on calls with EVERY phone I have owned (Blackberry Bold 9700, 3 different Iphones 2g,3g,3gs, Tmobile Shadow, Motorola Razr, and a couple of others I can't remember ) I've looked into this issue. I got tired of being told a hundred different answers. From my research the best I can find is two things.
1. Just a glitch in the cell your in.
2. It actually could be the case on the phone of the person you are talking to.
It's actually been the best on my SGS2. It has only happened once.

ive experienced the echo. its completely random but i have noticed that it does it more often when i am using headphones to talk rather than just holding the phone up to my ear.

I found this on the i9100 forum. Possibly an issue with our devices also.

In my case it happens when I talk to my girlfriend who has the iPhone 4S. Worth to note, when you are talking to somebody while laying on a bed and holding your phone upside down (the headphone jack faces the floor and micro usb side faces the ceiling) the echo appears and/or your voice gets lowered.

Guys, is the microphone near the headphone jack covered? If so, that causes echo.

Have yall try different Modem? Have no issue here. Had the same issue with my old Capitvate and fixed by changing Modem.

Happens with the case n without. Tried KK6 and HK7. Will try all the modems and see if it solved the problem. Seems to be more noticeable when I'm talking to somebody on a att iPhone 4s

Interferences in earbud

I have a pretty annoying problem because from the earbud (under the wrtitten SONY) comes interfecences while i'm speaking with someone using the mobile line.
The interference is like that of the speaker near a mobile phone but from the earbud.
someone has the same problem or mine is a isolated case?

I think you mean earpiece...not earbud.
If you hold the phone near your ear you can hear a very high pitched hiss sound while you are talking? The sound has a pattern to it. If so, then I have tried 2 of these phones and they both do it. I don't now if they all do it, but it seems to be common. Some people who don't have such good high-pitched hearing will not hear it at all. You will never hear it if you are outdoors...only if you are at home in a quiet room.

I hear it too. It's the usual GSM "cellphone interference" sound.
Hi i have the same i hear that xd
But what i have noticed this is only in GSM mode ...at WDCMA its ok..i cant hear this .
I have the same problem. Got my first phone replaced and the new one came today with the same problem.
Try only with WDCMA (3G) and See if that help.

i can hear that hissing too, i ve searched about it, and it looks like latest smartphones have that kind of problem, the only solution i could find is not to place your ear directly on the earpiece, fortunately this phone has a great in-call volume...
earpiece hissing, crackling, buzzing - problem solved
well amigos, the problem finally has been solved for me, reading this forum https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3414732?start=0&tstart=0
so i turned off my phone, i removed the sim card, i cleaned it using a soft cloth, and then i inserted it back, making sure the sim card was placed correctly in the tray, i tested it several times and guess what, there was no more hissing anymore, so the problem is the micro sim-card, those sim-cards must be placed correctly otherwise it will make that hisssing sound
i hope this works for you too
greetings from colombia...
Had my first two calls today, same problem. Interestingly, it gets louder/more noticeable when I'm actively speaking, not when the other party says something.
Sim-Card is fresh from the envelope, so there shouldn't be scratches, dust or fingerprints on it, but I'll try cleaning it up tomorrow. Got the phone set on GSM only, since I've got bad 3G/UMTS signal at home and I'm pretty sure constant "channel-hopping" would drain the battery.
Hi,
got xperia S yesterday. Great phone... only problem is GSM interference in the earpiece. It is there every time when phone is set to 2G. 3G is free of this issue. As I can hear at every call it's a bit irritating.
I don't know what should I do: sent it back to the store (bought from amazon), try to repair in the service centre or learn to live with it?
Can any of xperia S owners make a siple test: put the phone in "only GSM" mode and make one or two calls. Put earpiece close to the ear and listen to it. I wonder if it's design flaw and every xperis S have this issue, or only some of them....
Anyone who got his phone replaced and the new one came WITHOUT the same problem ???

Background "hiss/white noise" durring calls

I've been using a Note 2 demo unit for the past two days and have noticed that during a call, and the other person is talking, I can hear a "hiss/white nose" around the voice in the earpiece speaker. But when the person isn't talking, there is no hiss. I tried this with several calls (and also 1-800 recordings) and can hear it for every call. I'm not sure what the cause is, but it is quite distracting.
On the GS3 is does have a slight hiss, but it is hardly noticeable. The Droid DNA doesn't have any hiss during calls.
Since I wasn't sure if it could just be an issue just this Note 2, I stopped by a store on my way home today and tried the Note 2 that was on display. It has the same hiss/white noise that I'm getting on my unit.
Has anyone else noticed this on their phone?
I'm thinking it may have to do with the Note 2 using P_Rev 6 and the EVRC-B Vocoder. In my area, the regular EVRC sounds better than EVRC-B, but I don't see any way of changing it on the Note 2. I've changed between the P_Rev and Vocoders on other phones by doing ##PROGRAM, but that command doesn't work on the Note 2.

I had the same problem on my first Note 2. Took back to Verizon and replacement had the same issue. Was going to get a third one but the CSR tried it out and heard the same thing on the 3rd one so just returned it all together. Awesome phone otherwise but I make a lot of calls in a quite office, and with no other sounds it was really annoying.
Here is another thread with same issue http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021447
Really hope it is just a bad batch. I'm going to give it a few weeks and try another one.
I have the same issue, for what it's worth. However, I'm lucky enough to almost never use my phone to make phone calls so I can live with it.

Does turning off noise reduction (menu during call) address this problem at all?
Just an update on my previous post. I made a couple somewhat long calls today and I did not hear the background noise on the other end the way I had in the early days of the phone. Either it is simply a sporadic issue or it has worked itself out somehow.
Sent from my SCH-I605
I don't think it's a noise reduction issue. With noise reduction on or off, Voicemail calls sounded perfect. No hiss or anything. And I am quite sure of what the hiss sounds like, so I know what to listen for.
I'm wondering if it's just a case of the person you're talking to having a crap phone that has outgoing issues. It doesn't do it when I call my brother on his Note 2, just some other people. Wierd.

So in the past two weeks since I posted about this, I've tried calling a few people and tested it out, and I hear it on every call.
When the person on the other end is quiet, there is no hiss in the Note 2's earpiece speaker. But when the person talks, you can hear the hiss "surround" each word.
I've also tried it with the noise reduction feature on and off, and it doesn't make any difference.
Hi,
Does it happen when using bluetooth?
Thanks,
Bryan
I hope it is software not hardware. Was thinking about getting a Note II but this flaw would render this phone unusable to me, I use my phone as a phone a lot.

Getting audio feedback on CM9,10, Linaro

Most of the time it happens during calls. I'll answer the phone and hear a slight high pitched squeal (typically fades into the background to where the phone is still usable) that can become screeching feedback if my hand covers the microphone just right. It's hurt my ear unexpectedly more than once.
Sometimes it will happen even when I'm not in a call.
I've experienced it on Linaro roms running CM9 and I think also CM10.
I installed a sense rom and haven't had the problem since.
Anyone else experiencing this?

How unfortunate. I really like AOSP, except this, and this is a dealbreaker. I can't stand listening to squealing every time I answer a call and always fearing getting blasted by loud feedback with the phone near my ear.

I'm not 100% sure about this but there may be a workaround or something if you feel like thread surfing a little bit. My phone has never been quite as extreme so I never really paid attention. Good Luck
Turn your earpiece volume down, that way it won't feed back through.
I get scratchy audio on CM during calls, but never had anything hurt my ear. Do you have any dsp manager or anything boosting the audio volume?
And yes, Sense has a noise canceler built into the dialer that works much better than AOSP, it's one of the tradeoffs atm.

Voice call problems

Anyone else having people you call tell you they can't hear you in the middle of conversations? I can't find any correlation. It has happened with 3 different calls today. All in different locations, but not in the car.
I'll normally reposition the phone on my face and it will correct. Is it possible I'm covering the Mic with the Palm of my hand?

Bought my g3 in Berlin, using it in Israel...
I am having this issue. issue is fine when the phone is directly to ur ear but if u adjust it or have it a couple of inches away it is horrible.
been testing all day. speakerphone doesn't have this problem.
leave a fake message for urself and u can hear the problem
take the phone and talk into it like a hand radio in normal to low dialogue. while doing it change between speaker and handset talk at the same level.
Anyone ever find a solution to this? I'm still having the problem. Wish I had returned the phone the first time it happened, but I thought it was just a bad signal. I went back in to Best Buy where I bought the phone and they were zero help.

Welcome to the club
Has anyone had any feedback from LG/Verizon on this?
I called both and was told "they hadn't heard of the problem" which I don't believe.
Anyone get a fix or has a replacement phone fixed the issue?
Yes - I'm still suffering with this issue.
I have been using speakerphone lately and have not had a single complaint. As previously noted, using a BT headset works fine every time as well.
This leads me to suspect that the noise cancelling/voice enhancement circuitry is running amok because supposedly speakerphone and BT do not use that feature, even though the one selection I have on my phone is off I think the phone still uses some enhancement when using the stock mic.
Next step is to block the mic on top with a piece of foam and see if that fixes it. By blocking that mic, the phone will think it's in a completely silent from ambient noise setting and maybe will turn off the noise cancellation circuitry.
Food for thought.
I don't know if I can prove it, but the problem feels worse (more people tell me they can't hear me) with the quick circle case on. It still happens with my other case and with no case at all, but less.
Has anyone who has this issue received today's OTA from Verizon? If so, is the problem still present for you? I will have a chance to test myself tomorrow.
I received the update yesterday and have not had anyone complain of call quality yet but I have not made a lot of calls. It is encouraging though because I would get complaints on most calls. I'll give it a few days and see before proclaiming it's fixed.
FWIW I was using an Otter Box and am now using an LG Circle case but it fails with/without the cases. IOW case made no difference.
I have my fingers crossed that it might be fixed.
I do notice the phone seems quicker with the update.
I made two calls on my Vzw G3 today, using only the handset (not speakephone or bluetooth), and both callers said I sounded fine. One call was about 15 mins, and one about 5. My fingers are crossed that it is fixed, too. I really don't have any other complaints about this phone, and there isn't one I would rather be using right now.

Unfortunately I updated a few days ago and I had the problem last night on a call. So frustrating.
So only one complaint and I think it was due to a poor coverage area. I would get complaints all day long and every day so maybe, just maybe, they fixed it.... Still not convinced but feeling positive about this issue.
Today out of 7 calls so far I have had one person tell me they couldn't hear me. Re-positioning the phone closer to my mouth so my ear was more on the glass and not the speaker hole fixed it.
It's better than it used to be but might still be having problems.. Time will tell.
As an update, the problem is still there but it does seem better. Maybe 3 out of 10 calls will have the person on the other end telling me they can't hear me, breaking up, under water etc.
I've about had it with this phone and Verizon and I'm real close to putting it on Swappa and moving on to another phone and maybe another carrier.
I have been cautiously trying voice calls on the handset, but really got used to carrying Bluetooth headphones around over the last few months.
I have had 2 calls in maybe 8 where the caller complained, so about the same ratio as you.
I still don't want to switch to a different phone. I am not convinced I want a moto x or that I am ready for the size of the nexus 6.
Verizon sucks, but I need the strong network.

I really believe the issue is the G3 on VZ. My spouse switched to the iPhone 6: no issues with voice calls, with same usage as with the G3. I prefer Android phones, so I haven't decided what to do yet.
My wife has an iPhone 4 and before my LG G3 I had a Droid Razr Maxx. Neither phone has this problem. Same number of calls, same locations etc. All the complaints I have seen involve the G3 on Verizon so it's probably something to do with Verizon's version of Android.

To exchange my LG g3 or not

I'm at lost here I'm not sure whether to exchange my LG g3 for something else . some of my apps are not compatible with 4.4.2 with no update in site and being with in my 14 days not sure what to do . verizon is willing to work with me . coming for the note 3 to LG g3 I have to say I'm disappointed . any help would be appreciated.
Just got unlocked if that matters for you.
I really like mine and I'm keeping it but I think it's a dying phone as far as support goes (both official and from the hacking community).
This is especially true for the Verizon version.
The support the phone receives in the next 8 or 9 months before the G4 is available is what is going to make up my mind up about whether I stick with LG or jump back to the Samsung Galaxy line.
The G3/GS4/Note4 are the only flagship phones I would consider right now because I want a replaceable battery. Options are really limited for those of us who like to be able to carry an extra battery when we are going to have a really long day with heavy usage.

I've done some experimenting with the issue because it happens to me on just about every call that goes more than say a couple of minutes or so.
For me, it has never failed even a single time when I use my BT headset or the BT in the car.
In fact just yesterday, I was on a call and the person on the other end was complaining I was fading in and out. I hot swapped to my BT headset and we talked for about 45 minutes without a single problem.
So that leads me to conclude, that at least for my phone, it is the microphone or the audio processing within the phone and most likely not a radio problem.
Also when it does fail, re positioning the phone or talking loudly into the microphone seems to "wake it up" temporarily.
It also fails on speakerphone BTW.
I've seen some hits on the net regarding others with this problem and I suspect it is wide spread however most people are inclined to blame it on the cell connection etc.
I might try LG warranty repair first before selling and see if they can either fix/replace it.
It might just end up being an inherent design problem in the hardware which would be really bad.

Yes. There is a crackling sound on every single call I get now. I can even hear it while they are talking. It's not loud enough to make it so you can't hear the other person but it is annoying.
I didn't notice it for the first couple of weeks I had the phone but I've noticed for at least 2 weeks now on every single call.
As for the problem of people not hearing me, that was solved by holding the bottom of the phone closer to my mouth. I have a tendency to angle the phone away from my head when talking and it seems like the mic in the G3 is terrible and just doesn't pick sound up very well at more than a couple inches from your mouth.

I have a tendency to angle the phone away from my head when talking and it seems like the mic in the G3 is terrible and just doesn't pick sound up very well at more than a couple inches from your mouth.

I am trying to gather all the info I can on the issue. It seems like it's not affecting different phones just depends on how people hold it.
I preemptively disabled the voice enhancement setting just to be safe.
I placed several test calls to another cell and land-line and I heard no crackling. And my voice sounded just fine.
I am very curious to see if our update to hd calling improves the issue.
The sound I heard was so faint it was only noticeable during a pause. It was very reminiscent of signal interference. Maybe there's something not shielded correctly in the speaker or the antenna is too close?
I think the two issues are separate. Because the one time I had complaints it happened with phone, hangout voice call, and video, over speaker, mic, and headset. Hopefully disabling that voice enhancement fixes it.
Alright...
The bootlaoder is (basically) unlocked, you can get a free battery and cradle if you ask for it from LG, you can root/recovery/flash in @5 steps or less using stump/bump/flashify, and you can flash Jasmine(the phone JUST got TWRP!) ROM right now.
What more do you want?
Just go buy your iPhone/S5/locked down Note and stop bugging the rest of us who love our G3.
The G3 is a great phone and the devs are just getting started.
Hang in there.

Of course the G3 is a great phone, but that doesn't negate the fact that people are having problems with call quality. And it's rather odd, at least to me, that people seem to describe the symptoms the same way.
With all the phones I have owned/own, this one is the only one that I constantly have others telling me I'm:
1. Fading out.
2. Sound underwater.
3. Sound muffled.
4. Sound robotic/electronic voice like.
Some things I have discovered, only because I make a lot of calls.
1. Never happens with a BT wireless.
2. Never happens with a wired headset.
3. Never happens with speakerphone.
4. Re-positioning the phone so the bottom mic is above my mouth fixes it. This is not a solution because now the my ear rests in the middle of the screen, almost, not on the speaker.
My guess is that either the mic is not sensitive enough OR that fancy noise reduction/voice enhancement chip LG brags about is running amok somehow.
Reading the boards and even the reviews I realize that actually making phone calls with a phone seems to be an afterthought (see how little space the typical review gives to call quality) but for some of us it's more important than running YouTube at some insane resolution.
I do suspect that the reason the net isn't flooded with complaints is due to the fact that most people will blame this on cell technology and just the nature of the beast.
And that is understandable to a point.
I'm not interested much in rooting the phone.
I just want a phone I can make calls from where I don't have to be constantly re-positioning it so the other person can hear me.
That shouldn't be asking too much for a top tier phone.
This is Verizon BTW.

This will probably be fixed, we haven't even got an update yet.

I agree with you Chilidog !
That's why I am sticking with the phone.
I love everything else about this phone.
I must be lucky. The only time I had issues was after I rooted the phone. Once I restored the original ROM the issues completely went away. While I was rooted I had intermittent Wi-Fi, battery drain, and slow apps. Now I've used the phone at work all day and still have 60% battery left. My work Wi-Fi stayed connected all day and no voice quality issues. I've had all 3 Samsung Notes and I love the G3.
Just wondering, but has anyone tried disabling the noise suppression or voice enhancement settings under Settings > Call? These options don't affect BT.

The Verizon version only has the Voice Enhancement setting and yes I have tried it both ways with no difference.
The android lollipop update is rumored for the end of 2014. It will probably fix a lot of the sluggishness and call quality problems as well as add better support for ART runtime and loads of other new features.
