In working under the hood on my Transformer, I found what looks like just the spot for the modem, i.e. as in the TF-101G's 3G modem. Software and SIM issues aside, short of aquiring a TF-101G for parts, does anyone have an idea where I might be able to find a suitable board to test this idea with? It'd be an interesting experiment to install a modem in my tablet but I doubt I can just call ASUS for a quote on the part.
Although, I suppose I could probably try to find a USB dongle that works and make it internal to the dock, but I'm kinda curious about an in tablet solution.

This is the card inside my TF101G but looks like it does not incorporate a SIM slot

You can get these on eBay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HuaWei-EM82...231?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27bf783337
The latter looks like it would only be able to pull 2G off my carrier's network but definitely interesting. When I can clear this stripped screw and finish fixing my screen, I think I'm going to doule check the spot and photo it for reference.

I don't see any Mini PCIe slot in the regular TF101.
There are pin-outs for one though :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14439974&postcount=16
What are you going to do for 3G drivers?
That is something I don't know about yet. The TF101G has sth obviously but a different modem would need to be one a driver is available for, and builds against a suitable kernel. I also have a few other things to do with $, and would need sth that works on my carrier to test with.

Hey guys i ask my self is there a way to ADD 3G Sim slot and 3G modem to this device???
Because i saw the sim slot beside the SD card slot!
If yes please share with us your knowlege
I also was thinking that this might be possible. Although the box said "Iconia A500", My device information screens say that the device is a A501 and somewhere in there it also says "3G". So I was thinking that maybe all the firmware is already there and maybe it was just a matter of fitting it out with a SIM receptacle. (maybe even that is there - I dare not open up my new Iconia Tab after I broke the touch screen of the 8" Utopia Apad I have!)
Anybody brave enough to hack into the Acer Iconia?
I am also very keen on a modd like this would be awesome!
unless you have a 501 model hardware(not software) there is no sim jack under the sticker that covers the sim slot. And the sim recepticle is not the only piece of hardware required for 3g service. You need a 3g pcie card, or in this case more likelyan onboard chip. If they didnt include the $.50 recepticle, the chip isnt installed either. Unless your willing to disect your tablet youll never know for sure. Just remember to take pics of the hardware when you crack it open.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
I have done a little looking into this. From what I can tell , a mini pcie slot is available that would most likely be utilized in this mod. As far as finding one that will be supported I have not gone that far. I also am not sure if there are any other modifications needed to be made to the motherboard (I doubt it). All my inquiries have ended with no positive results. I'm sure it's possible and probably not as difficult as most think. I believe once there are more damaged units available with the right hardware, there will be more attempts at this mod. I suggest trying to find a damaged a501 and seeing what you can do with its 3g radio.
Hello everyone!!! I finally got my prime today. I got it already updated to ics. Is there a custom rom available with a working GPS? Also, i tried to hookup my hdmi and for some reason i couldnt get any sound out of it?
Any help would be great. Thank you.

there is a rom called icilicious rom. supposedly makes GPS more acceptable. he adds in key files that were missing. he has a video in his thread showing his GPS findings.
for your HDMI issue, I'm not sure. have you tried a different cable? maybe a soft reset might make it work. its the pin hole on same side as volume rocker and memory card slot. its right underneath the card slot. just put a paperclip in there till you hear/feel a slight click. then it'll reset/reboot. you don't loose any data from it.
off topic: your sign pic looks like an intercooler in bottom grille. if so, how much boost you running & HP/Tq? is that the newer model that has the launch control?

Thank you for this...i rooted my tablet and flashed icylicious. Havent tested my hdmi yet tho.
Off topic: all evos come with front intercooler systems. Im pushing 425awhp/380awtq on e85 ethanol. Launch control system were only installed on the new Evo X's with dual clutch systems. But ive installed a 2-step system which works just like lunch control by eliminating turbo lag on launch.

I had two USB 10/100 Ethernet Adapters kicking around. Been using them to add temp interfaces to boxes destined to be routers, packetfilters/captures & such.
One: MacBookAir USB Adapter
Model# A1277
Confirmed Working on my Stock (rooted) ASUS TF101
AUTO 10,100 & Auto MDX/I (crossover) all work.
Two: Old DaviCOM USB 10/100 Adapter
Model# DM9601
FAIL... on the TF101 anyway. Works on my other nix builds, Winders (32&64) & perfectly on FreeBSD
My axis chipset based dealextreme dongel worked with android 2.3 and 3.2, with drivers ofcourse.
but it failed to do anything on any ics rom i tested with (stock, arhd, revolver and cna)
Bought the offical apple adapter today and no problems so far on ardh rom.
now it even shows a notification when it finds the adapter.
Thanks for the feedback guys. Mine still haven't arrived, so I'll let you know if it works when I get it

I just plugged it up and it didn't work. I'm hoping I did something wrong or mine is broken. Anyway, I'm out the dollar I paid for it. From what I've seen, the apple one, and the ones that look like the apple one work fine. So tomorrow I'm off to my computer store to ask for a counterfeit apple usb-ethernet adapter.
I´ve spent a ****load of time trying to make this work without having any knowledge of linux and anything.
The thing is, i managed to get it working simply inputing 3 commands on terminal.
Here´s my micro tutorial:
Turn off your wifi
Plug in the usb adapter and the network cable.
open terminal app
type
su
ifconfig eth0 ip.that.you.want.to.use
setprop net.dns1 8.8.8.8
route add default gw your.default.gateway.address dev eth0
and that´s it, your network adapter should be working.
The menu on configuration doesn´t show up tough, so all the configurations must be done on the terminal, or by using other apps.
Hope to have helped

He prime users,
I have one of the primes with a bad connection to Wifi.
I love to use my prime for all other futures but it would be nice if i can also use it in the rooms further from my wifi signal.
Therefore i would like to insert a wifi usb stick/dongle into my prime keyboard.
Does anyone have experience with this? Or are there other people that have a wifi usb stick and want to check if it works?
My wifi signal is secured so how can you insert a password?
I really hope that this idea will solve my wifi problems for good.
Kind regards,
Germer
Did you registered you Transformer Prime on the (vip . asus . com) asus member webpage?
Once you have your product registered you will see an option on the left that let's you "ask" them to give the "solution" they found for those who have wifi problems with their Tranformer Prime.
Better worry, because it ends arround July I think.
Thanks for your reply.
I don't have the option on my asus vip page, i sended them an email now.
I bought the prime in the USA and i live in Europe so i can not return the prime.
I still hope i can solve the issue with a wifi stick? Anybody knows about the compatibility of a wifi stick?
On the VIP website, once inside, look for a botton called "TF201 GPS Extension Kit Apply&Inquire". After the click you will see something like this:
"Thank you for purchasing the ASUS Eee Transformer Prime TF201, and helping to make it the most popular Android based tablet since its launch in December 2011. We greatly appreciate feedback from our valued customers about our products, and take it very seriously. The response to the TF201 generally has been overwhelmingly positive, but we understand that, in certain regions, the GPS functionality has not met some user’s expectations.
Free Dongle! At ASUS, we are committed to delivering innovative, high-quality products and services, and our customers’ experience is important to us. Although the TF201 is not a professional GPS device, as part of our unwavering commitment to our customers we are offering all customers who purchased a TF201 system a free external GPS extension kit, called a dongle, which may help improve signal reception and optimize the user experience. We are pleased to announce this offer as part of our commitment to customer service, but it does not replace, alter or amend any existing warranties you may have.We also encourage you to contact ASUS customer support in your local region directly if you are experiencing GPS related problems.
ASUS prides itself on delivering an unrivalled user experience, and we offer our sincere apologies for any inconvenience that our customers may have encountered.
The offer will expire on 31th of July, 2012 (PST)."
It doesn't matter if you bought it in the USA and you live in Europe, just drop your adress and they will send you the hardware free of charge.
He again,
I do have the GPS extension kit, but does this kit also improve my wifi signal? I actually only care about the wifi signal. In the description of the gps extension kit it doesn't say anything about improving wifi.
germer
No, the dongle, according to reports, doesn't do anything to improve wifi.
Not sure why people in this thread are giving you advise on how to improve your GPS, when you asked about wifi?!?
Sorry I don't have any info on the issue you did ask about.
Sorry, my bad. I tought The dongle would help WIFI reception too.
Try searching on youtube for "asus transformer prime wifi fix" this might help. After you tested it, post here your results please.
I first brought up that idea about the wifi dongle. Demandarin said that if there is enough popularity on this subject Gary Keys might actually impliment it. So please keep seeing if more people would like this. This should be able to fix all wifi problems completely!!!
I used that video before, and it does work and improves my reception. But i can not sit at the couch and push on my tablet all the time. It is only temporarily and does not give me a good solution. I really hope that more people are interested in a wifistick solution so that someone can test it. More ideas?
Does anyone think this would work on the prime? It's a usb WIFI adapter for Apple products and some more.
meritline dot com/wlan-wireless-wifi-express-adapter-for-iphone-ipad-ipod---p-79501.aspx?hq_e=el&hq_m=2447492&hq_l=125&hq_v=84917200d8
Im not sure dude, but I would try giving it a go. I have messaged Gary Keys in hopes for him to allow usb wifi adapters to work on the prime to fix the wifi problem but I havent gotten an answer back yet. I assume if we all bring it up enough on these forums, he will actually impliment it in future updates. So, If you can, try spreading this idea around so more people will fight for this to happen.
I got this little wifi range extender that I carry around and use with my prime if needed.

It works pretty well. You can quickly change which wifi network you want to extend with this by connecting to it and using the web browser to log into the quick setup.
You can also use it as an external wifi card via ethernet if you have the dock and a usb to ethernet adapter.

I've read in some other threads that it works quite good indeed. However it's almost twice the price of the TP-link router. And in both cases, the question still remains if the device can be powered by the prime or not (for WL330N3G can't help but notice that the explanatory picture shows 2 usb cables connected to one laptop :s)

Just wanted to share my experience with the tplink nano router earlier mentioned with the tfp. So my main questions was if the device could be powered with the dock of my prime: it does not other than that, the repeater function works perfectly. The router is about 25 feet from the main router. The tfp right next to it, i managed to get 4 mbps of download out of a possible 12. From the same spot, the tfp gets between -80 to -70 dbm but the dm speed barely gets to 700 bps. So for the size and the price paid for, it's quite a nice performance imho. Besides, it is possible to configure it directly with the prime (with the help of'the dock and a nintendo wii ethernet to usb adapter). Like seen in most reviews the default settings come with dhcp server options disabled but it's quite easy to manage through the admin panel. I'll try to test it throughly with different scenarios (wifi hotspot and such...) and post results. It is quite sad that it can't be powered with the dock. Other than that, i hope it will be sufficient until the time i'll find a prpper replacement for the prime.

It might be nice if ASUS cared enough to make the WL330N3G available cheaply to TF201 owners ...come to think of it free would be even better.
I got my GPS dongle but to be honest I would rather have better Wifi. I am confused as to whether the TF201 actually supports a normal Wifi Dongle - my reading seems to indicate that it requires a software update with appropriate drivers. If that's the case then maybe that's a good reason to root the Prime with a ROM that supports a Wifi Dongle!
Is there one out there?

Hey all, i havent been on this fourm in awhile and I thought Id come on here to talk about an idea i have. Iv been looking for a way to have a better wifi signal on my phone, not just at home but also for public wifi spots. Then i thought of those usb Wifi adapters you can hook into your computer. Is it possible to use your cell phones usb charging cord and plug a wifi adapter into it and increase your cell phones wifi capabilities. I have a new samsung galaxy note , so i was hoping that this phone would be able to do the job. This phone is like a mini computer so i am considering trying it but just wondering if anyone else has had success with this or has any opinions.
Those USB dongles won't yield much, if any, better results then your phones own. I havn't read up much on the internal workings of the Note, but I imagine your best bet would be some sort of antenna...or getting out of your car and going into starbucks to get better signal.

yea id be okay with using an antenna , im trying to find one on the internet but its very hard to come across something that will work. Has anyone had success using an antenna on a cell phone?
If you take the back cover off of the i717 note, there are 2 different antena ports. Maybe something like this (not recomending seller but has a couple of pictures):
http://www.accessorygeeks.com/wilson-359921-adapter.html
would work to hook up an external antena
I don't know if one of the ports is for wifi though.

The set by the SD card is for NFC and the contacts line up with antenna contacts located on some phone backs (see some of the highcap hump back packs). The other contacts however look like typical snap on wireless contacts found on many laptop wifi cards. This has potential and I'm curious about this not and I could mod a back to easily rig up an external antenna...damnit now you have me wondering what those contacts do.
someone on another forum is saying its possible and that ill need this adapter, the only problem is im not sure if this is the right adapter and even worst this ebay seller doesnt ship to canada !!
here is my phone and the ports on it, which one is for the wifi adapter?
The ones by your SD is NFC. The ones labeles R1 / R2 may be. But i can't say for sure, its merely a guess. Could be wifi or cellular.

I own a wilson antenna. Just found it in the garage. Would be sweet to use it. I bought one for a cell phone I had many years ago that people often modified. If you want to guess which one, I'll give you a hint: you could play snake on it.
The wilson antenna takes adapters and the ports actually look the same as the old phone - though now there are more, of course. Know there was that thread where people put wires in some of them blindly and lost wifi forever, etc, but surprised no one has taken more advantage of this. Someone must know how to use those ports. I remember sitting in the middle of a lake, on a boat, in a _remote_ place, plugging in that old antenna, and getting crystal clear cell signal. To have that for the note (at least for a car dock, etc) would be amazing.
Over at the Nexus 7 forum, someone posted a modded Nexus 7 with external antenna for a record breaking wifi, or was it cell, signal distance. I can't remember exactly. Too lazy to search for it myself, lol.
IT was most likely for the cell strength, but I could be wrong....All i know is that when i did a extensive search for a wifi extender for my cell phone I constantly kept finding products and solutions ONLY for the cell phone strength increase. When I talked to company employees about my increasing my wifi strength they seemed puzzled! But im sure its possible for a cell phone to increase the wifi, I just dont know how to do it properly.

I read somewhere that R1 is generally for the cellular antenna, and anything with W would be the Wi-Fi, G for the GPS. Since there's an R2, maybe that has something to do with the phone having receive diversity (two antennas for the cell modem). I've heard of a lot of people shorting out their phones by playing with these ports, I'd be careful.

I remember seeing that, I think it was a record (about a mile) for controlling a quadricopter. Pretty awesome :3
Pretty sure R1 and R2 are for Radio. Meaning cell, not WiFi.
