Is anyone else having problems tethering to a rooted Thunderbolt? I have tried PDANet Tablet. The phone and tablet see each other on bluetooth. PDAnet running on both units and say connected but no data transfers.
I have also tried the built in WIFI tethering with the "Infected" rom that I am using. Again it shows connected on both sides but no data is transferring.
The WIFI at my house is working fine on the Prime.
Ad-Hoc tethering to the Prime is a known problem w/ the ICS update.

Try Open Garden (should be available on Android Market)
I have a thunderbolt as well and the only tethering app I could get to work with the Prime was 'Open Garden'. I tried Barnacle, WIFI Tether and one other one, but none of them worked. Not sure what is different about Open Garden but it seems to do the trick.
I tether my phone to my prime every day at work without issue......phone specs in sig. Just using the in-built wifi tethering from cm
There is already many threads about tethering. Couldn't people read and search before starting a new thread? All that have been said above have already been said many times.
I tether with my thunderbolt running built in app. Running Gingeritis 3D and SHIFTSENSE roms.

Hello to all my android geek family.. I have been trying out different Usb tethering programs including easy tether, and pdanet. They work great for about 5 to 10 minutes and then the internet on my pc stops, while the internet on my phone still works. It does it with both programs. Is Usb tethering just that buggy right now on the bolt? Or is it just me? When I look at the internet connection on my desktop, it still says its connected to an internet source. Please help. Thanks.

First it would help to list which rom/kernel/radio you are using. it seems to me that all GB roms are ****ed when it comes to tethering. wireless goes off after the screen is off. and i experienced either no connect or constant disconnects with wired tether. on top of that, gb roms/radio had this annoying habit of making my 4g connection disappear for a second then to reappear, but with out the ability to download anything. happened all the time. then i switched back to froyo rom and poof, like magic tethering works perfectly. no 4g disappearing, no loss of tether when screen is off. i havnet tried the wired tether app since on froyo because i prefer wireless, but i'll give it a try and let you know.

Ok thanks. In case you haven't noticed I am on bamf 3.0 with the stock kernal that comes with it. So if I want to use wireless tethering just make sure the screen doesn't timeout? That's the only problem you experienced? Also were you using the basic wireless tether app that comes preinstalled? Thanks for your help. ;D

i couldn't get he wired tether app to work. you can use the wireless tether app to tether. right now i'm on the latest synergy 3.0 rom with the kernel that it came with on mr2.5 radio. i hve the 2.0.5 version (much older version) of wireless tether and everything has been running smoothly for the past 16 hours. tried the latest. 3.0.1 beta of wireless tether that came out yesterday, but it didn't want to connect me to the pc. now with the combination of tether app (2.0.5) and the rom, i can tether while the screen is off. i couldn't do this before with the 2.0.7 wireless tether app and older nightly of the synergy rom (6-27 or so). i guess the problems got fixed. I alaso havent experienced any 4g icons/connection disappearing for second and reappearing, but without the ability to tether. i'll give a couple days to figure stuff out. try it out on the bamf roms see if you have problems. and try many of the version of wireless tether app.

Strange PDAnet seemed to be working for me yesterday all day (USB Tethering). I was playing Counter-Strike Source with it and I was surprisingly getting a decent ping.. Not as good as I would imagine but still decent. Around 90 Ms. The wireless hotspot that comes with the phone seems to be a hit or miss for me. It wants to work sometimes, and sometimes it just doesn't want to work. It will connect to the wireless network no problem, says Internet Access, but really in reality, there is no internet..lol.. To get PDAnet working, if that's what you were trying to use, Try installing the legacy drivers. Just go to the PDAnet folder in the start menu and install Lecacy network drivers.. That fixed everything for me.
Off topic just a little bit, but have you noticed a large speed decrease through wireless? I only get about 7.5mbps max, compared to 20+ on the phone itself using speakeasy's speed test. strange....anyways, Ill keep messing with the tether, both wireless and usb, and let you know what I come up with..
Where do you get the other versions of Wireless tether?
this is where if find all the wireless tether apps.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
i never tried to use the pdanet. you have to pay and i'm too cheap for that.
speed decrease in wireless? no. the speedtest app doesn't work right for lte apparently. what i do i go to the browser (both the phone and the tethered comptuer) and go to their website. speedtest.net and perform the test there. typically 15-25 mbps download both using the computer and cell phone. the app is pretty unreliable in my opinion.
hmm playing counterstrike. never thought about it. i used to love day of defeat, maybe i'll give it a try since you say the lag isn't all that bad.
One other thing that you should look out for is HTC Sync running in the background while using a non-root tethering app like PdaNet or EasyTether. They all use adb under the covers, so there can be conflicts if not managed appropriately. It's probably best to fully exit HTC Sync if you have it.
By the way, someone on the Droid Charge forums has run a speed comparison between the various USB tether methods, and it's a bit enlightening. Despite PdaNet's claims of "handling download speed of well above 35Mbps (35000kbps) over USB and [being] the fastest tethering software available for Android, it really lags behind everyone else.

wireless tether has been money, however easy tether (on Bamf sense 3.0 mr2) has been working so far, maybe try that.
Is anyone currently using a free tether app for a Rooted TB?
This is what you want to use:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Download the latest. I have found this to be the best app for the job.
Roger that! I will give it a shot.
Seems to work great! I should only use this app alone and not the hotspot widget, right?
Yup thats all you need for tethering freedom
F...king Whoa!!! Makes rooting worth it.
Does this still work for anyone?
I was using both the built in portable hotspot in CM7 and occasionally the WiFi Tether app on my Thunderbolt and everything was fine until Verizon started blocking third party tethering apps *which apparently only affected Gingerbread users...
droid-life.com/2011/05/31/verizon-begins-blocking-wireless-tether-asks-that-you-purchase-a-plan/
Since then when I tried to connect to the WiFi hotspot from my laptop it would just hang while connecting, it would eventually give an error -something along the lines of: "unable to obtain an IP address" and if it ever did connect it would say connected with no internet access. The only app that would work for me was Barnacle WiFi Tether, and I'm still using it with no problems, just wish there were more options, and I'm scared it will get blocked soon too. I'm loving LTE, and with an unlimited plan at $29 a month it's just begging to be shared with my laptop.

The built-in wifi hotspot in CM7 works fine so I haven't found the need to try the wifi tether app linked above lately. If you'd clicked the "wireless tether" tag in the article you linked you would have seen some suggestions and statements that it works fine.
http://www.droid-life.com/tag/wireless-tether/
The CM7 tether can be a little buggy and give out after a while. Android tether has always worked the best for me.
Verizon can't block tethering apps on your phone, they can only get Google to remove them from the market (which they have) - though there is still a couple like barnacle floating around in the market.

Only downside is that if you abuse it (maybe 30+GB month) you're at risk of getting your data transfer rate slowed down. But the next month as long as you didn't use a lot the previous month it'll go back up.
Thanks for the info !
Another option for USB tethering would be PDANet. I use that for tethering my Mac

After ICS, the Prime cannot see wireless tether options. I have tried both wireless tether and barnacle on my phone and now the Prime will not see them and allow a connection to my phone.
UPDATE: so here is the basic situation for new readers - in Honeycomb on the Prime, using tether apps worked perfect and the Prime accepted ad hoc network connections so you could tether your Prime to your phone easy. Under ICS on the Prime, the ability has been removed and now the Prime will not seem to allow you to connect to ad hoc networks - those typically made via tether apps with your phone.
HEY before you post up "it works fine for me" do your research & you will see 2 key reasons why some can report it works...
1) they have "native" tether built into their phones - which means it is part of the native built in phones ability
Or
2) they are rooted & have a ROM that has tether cooked into it essentially making it "native"
If your one of these people there is no reason or need to chime in that "it works fine for me". We know & your not part of the issue here but you chiming in confuses the issue if you have 1 or 2.

UPDATE for TF300 users - 5.11.12
According this this user, this mod works on the new TF300
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
IT HAS BEEN FIXED BY ASUS - 2.31.12
As of this day, the recent .21 OTA update gave us ad hoc functionality back natively!
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
IT HAS BEEN SOLVED - 2.3.12
Based on a post I read the other day, and that I was asked to test today, I decided to try 1 more time and it worked!! But not how I expected. I tried 3 tests... the final one worked!!
So, here is the process:
1. root is required AND make sure you have your file system app (like Root Explorer) set to make files R/W so you can edit/rename/set permissions
2. turn off wifi
3. go into system/bin and rename wpa_supplicant2 to wpa_supplicant2.bak - that's right folks.. it is NOT wpa_supplicant but wpa_supplicant2 that is running the show
3. download the wpa_supplicant file found here post #24 in my other thread
4. unzip it
5. rename it wpa_supplicant2 NOT wpa_supplicant
6. move it to system/bin and paste it
7. set permissions to xxx, x, xxx (columns) - see more details below if confused
8. go back and start up wifi
9. turn on wifi analyzer and you will see (*)AndroidTether with no red Ad Hoc notation!!
10. click to connect
11. ****ing surf and tether away!!
No rebooting needed, it is instant
I am using the good old original Wireless tether 2.0.7 app I always used! None of those beta releases and picking settings and blah blah
Yes, I was able to connect right back to my local wifi with no issues as well!
PLEASE hit the thanks button, I worked long and hard on trying to get this to work
#7 details if you don't understand permissions settings
When you set permissions (long press the file) a pop-up opens and it shows 3 columns with 3 checkboxes in each. Each "x" is to be checked
Read...Write...Execute
x..........x..........x
x......................x
x......................x
ditto. FML
Seriously people, you have to send this POS back.
By keeping it all you are doing is sending them a message saying it's ok to palm their customers off with third rate shoddy products.
There's no way ANYONE should be 'happy' with paying for functionality they're not getting.
wifi tether 3.1-beta6 on htc tb still works
anyone else seeing this? lack of tether is a major PIA if that isn't a selectable option?
Tethering works with my LG Revolution. Running Wifi Tether 3.1-beta6.
Have it set to display in infrastructure not ad-hoc. Ad-hoc may be the issue here
Have you tried setting it up using the wireless tether app but not in adhoc mode....using softAP mode or something like that.

Where you finding this beta of wifi tether? here it is
I use version 2.0.7 of Wireless Tether on my OG Droid and never had an issue, now it is dead and no tether. Latest version of Barnacle did not work either.
My laptop sees the tether 100% perfect... my tablet will not - just shows "AndroidThether not in range"
Im on 3.1-beta2 from the market and not connecting.

I have a T-mobile hotspot. I left it at home, this morning I thought maybe I would try my sprint NS4G to see. My Prime found it just fine, but it wouldn't give me data cause I dont have a tethering plan. Just sayin, its working for me.
Are you trying to tether to or from prime? If you are trying "from" prime (aren't you getting internet from wifi at the first place?) you can click more -> Tethering & portable hotspot
If you are tethering to prime, then all you need is to enable wifi?
I used Bluetooth tether just a little bit ago and it worked great
Tethering works fine for me. Open Garden with the Droid X.
My tethering is working 100% perfectly using a Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile. No problems whatsoever on ICS.

No no.. I would never tether TO the Prime, no value in that.. I tether my Prime TO my phone. Worked perfect before ICS.
And no, it is not just as simple as "then all you need is to enable wifi?" that fact is exactly why they make tether apps.

Tether app is so you can send a data signal from that device, it isn't for connecting to a device that has data, you need to turn on wifi and locate the name of your hotspot and connect.
I can confirm also. Prime is not seeing my Wireless tether app or Barnacle. WTF is going on? this is a big deal as I use tether methods for internet to tablet away from home. What did they change to make it not work anymore?
Hi,
I have read all the posts regarding the inability of ICS on the prime to access ad-hoc networks. I have tried all those 3rd party software (Barnacle, Wifi Tether beta 3.11 - tried to select different phones, pdanet on my Moto Atrix and mywi on a jailbroken Iphone 3GS) and my TP just does not see the ad-hoc network. There is a work around to modify wpa_supplicant (in one of the posts), but don't want my TP to be rooted. I think all these is happening due to ICS since on Honeycomb there was no problem. One of the posts indicated that ICS disables ad-hoc network since they are using WIFI Direct and don't know how that is implemented or used with the TP and able to connect to wifi devices (maybe like phone running a wifi tethering software, don't know)
Other people got it to work and for me, for whatever reason just does not connect my TP.
Another problem I have, is when I use bluetooth with my Atrix, it is indicated paired but not connected and whatever I do, when I click on the phone, the only option I have is rename or unpair, and my suspicion is, my bluetooth never connects to my phone. I tried my bluetooth headset and is connected properly (indicates media and phone connected) and I can hear my music play on my TP. Never works between my phone and TP.
If anybody is kind enough to share their thoughts or even a fix for this, would gladly appreciate it.
Thank you.
I fixed mine by using a custom ROM for my phone with a baked in Wi-Fi tether ie Sprint hotspot or Verizon's hotspots as these work just fine with tether.
I had success with the Open Garden Wifi Tethering app (available on the Android Market).
I have a Thunderbolt and have used Barnacle and Wifi Tether in the past for tethering to my laptop, but neither of these Apps worked with the Prime.
Tether
I also have the TP and a Samsung Intercept vm rooted, wifi tether and Barnacle both don't show up.
Why is this so difficult?
Just installed Open Garden, willsee when my TP gets back from repair (waiting on part! Hope itz a new radio!) Sent it in for weak wifi
theres already been a 20some page thread about this. ICS doesnt have a method to see ad hoc networks. some phones can broadcast in infrastructure, some cannot. Me personally, upgrading to ICS on my Verizon Rezound seems to have fixed its ability to broadcast in infrastructure, and where i was screwed before I am no longer.
I haven't tried adhoc, but it works fine if I turn the wifi hotspot on.
I'm using a custom ICS rom on a T mobile HTC Sensation.
If you have read all those threads - then there is no need to start another one.
Ok, I have a new Acer Iconia A200 tablet. It's WiFi only. My DX2 is running CM7 with the tethering patch applied.
The question is this: how can I USB tether my tablet with my phone? I have seen plenty of articles about phone to laptop/PC running XP/W7/Mac OS/Linux but nothing about Android to Android, particularly with USB. I know how to turn on the tethering on the phone. The tablet has both host and slave USB ports.
As a computer tech, I got the tablet so that I could put manuals on it instead of lugging my laptop around but sometimes you need an internet connection and a lot of places don't allow outside folks to tap their wireless network.
Thanks in advance. And just an FYI - the tablet is rooted and running ICS.
Search for an app called FoxFi in the Market. I installed it on my Droid X (stock, unrooted) and it works great for tethering my Transformer Prime. Maybe it will work for your device/rom as well.
I had problems getting it to work initially. I had to reboot my phone and turn off wi-fi first before it worked.
This app can tether via wi-fi or bluetooth. I have only tested wi-fi.
As far as USB tethering between two Android devices, I've never tried it. PdaNet 3.02 may be capable of doing this, but I don't really know.
Hope this helps.
