In a moment of madness the other day, I ordered one of these devices. I've had some experience of Android on an HTC Wildfire & Archos 101 so thought it would be a relatively safe bet. But oh no.
Can't find a way to access photos on a Windows Media Connect server with the supplied apps & of course, there's no user guide supplied. Look online & the current user guide is for Gingerbread when the device has Froyo. So I thought I'd check & see if Gingerbread has been released in the UK & if that made any difference. Dear old Samsung can't be like other manufacturers & provide a simple "check for software update" in the settings menu, that would be far too simple. No, you need to download & install a Windows program & update via USB. Now while a PITA, would be just about acceptable if Samsung had ever in their history written a decent piece of Windows software - which they haven't. PC Studio & Emodio being two examples of flaky software with pigeon English. So no surprise whatsoever when Kies proves to be yet another piece of ****.
Anyone have any idea why Kies can't establish a USB connection to W7 despite the mass storage device connecting fine? Just sits there trying to connect. No errors, no timeout, just sits there.
When posting here, you really need to post your variant... 4.0 or 5.0?
I'm surprised you're still on Froyo - usually it's United States customers that get screwed on updates but both the 4.0 and 5.0 are on Gingerbread I'm fairly certain.

After trying an XP machine with another USB cable I've discovered that the device has to be manually placed into Kies mode under Settings > USB. Again, why can't they just prompt when the USB is connected like other manufacturers?!
Anyway, so now I finally have Kies running & it tells me that despite the current online manual being for Gingerbread, Froyo is the latest available. Think I'll just give up, send it back & write a big note to self never to buy anything from Samsung again.

Yes, because you have to set the USB mode to KIES mode. That is for Gingerbread; I do not know if that is the case for Froyo, or why you have the old system.
I have a 5.0, never used Kies and don't plan to. USB set on "Mass Storage", connects with USB instantly. I'm on W7. Must used USB cable provided (unless you're lucky and found another that works, many don't). Never used Media Connect, can't help you there, I just dragged all my MP3 into the extrernal SD card.

I have a 5.0 from the UK as well and the 2.3.5 Gingerbread ODIN version posted in the Android Dev section (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1389809) works fine on our devices. It even saves you the hassle of using Kies which is a giant pain.
As for Windows Media Connect, not exactly sure what protocol it uses but you may have some luck with the AllShare app provided by Samsung (unsure if it was included in the Froyo version but it is definitely standard in Gingerbread.) Hope you have some luck as it really is a great device once you get past the initial humps. Let us know how it goes.

Seen the Odin option but don't really want to start hacking in case it does need to go back. Haven't looked to see if Odin can revert back to Froyo. If it can I may give it a go but hearing reports that Gingerbread knackers the GPS receiver.
AFAIK, Media Connect is just another DLNA. The Gallery app seems to have no option to view anything on the LAN & AllShare seems to be limited to creating AV playlists. It can't view photos & every video file on my server is apparently in an "unsupported format"!
The hardware seems decent enough but I'm not sure I have the will or desire to source replacements for every pre-installed app. My worry going forward is that Samsung pull their usual stunt of "Here's a new model, we don't have to bother with the (6 month) old one now"...
I use File Expert to view/move files/pictures on my home PC, does a wireless connection (as do many explorers). FX File Explorer is also nice (as well as Astro and ES Strong). Most pre-installed apps on any device have much better free counter parts. I don't think I'm use anything that came with the phone (other than system stuff), and I'm not rooted (yet)... but will be so I can get rid of it all for good. Although there's tons of app space, so doesn't bother me much at the moment.

All of my USB cables work with the device (from N900, N950, various other phones) so I'm not sure why people have troubles with this. But I may just be lucky.

Can't be sure without any proper documentation but it appears to be limited as above.
I'm really not sure the device offers enough to make the effort of rooting in order to uninstall all the garbage worth while.
I'd like to think that the lack of an official Gingerbread release means Samsung are working on fixing the bugs. But my previous experience of their products makes me think otherwise.
Lack of Gingerbread is more likely something weird that's UK-specific... In the US, it's been Gingerbread from the beginning and I think international devices in the rest of the world are too.
I have never had good results with UPnP media format support on any device - even my PS3 is really damn finicky. However it's annoying that the G70 seems to have issues with UPnP streaming of stuff it plays locally.
I rarely view photos on my phone and haven't ever done it on the player, but in my case I have a Smugmug account so I just browse my galleries that way.
It seems like unfortunately your usage patterns are in a corner case where the device doesn't do so well. UPnP support is kinda "meh" - but as I said I've never seen any device where it wasn't. An iPod touch would probably do just as badly trying to browse photos via UPnP.
AllShare plays my HD video files on my server

I have used AllShare. It sees all of my video files files on my server (just a home computer that shares). And I have played 640x480 AVI video files and a 720p wmv video file from my server smooth as butter and with great resolution on the SGP. It will not stream or play 1080p video files, however (which is in accord with the specs).
For what it's worth, I have no 720 files never mind 1080. AllShare can see them all (a mixture of AVI & MPG mostly) but won't play them. However, I can create a shortcut to them with ES FIle Explorer & play them all fine with Rockplayer. Guess I need to find a photo viewer than can do the same.

Have tried to connect Tab 10.1 to my mac but no joy. Apparently OS lion doesnt support kies BUT can i connect via usb in the same way i would on galaxy s 2? I cant find any info anywhere to help.

don't know about the usb hookup but i'm running osx leopard and found that the easiest way to connect to my macbook is with an ftp connection. i'm using cyberduck (free) on my macbook and an app called file expert on my tab. file expert is like astro, but it allows you to share files via an ftp connection.
once you get it set up your tab file tree will show up on your macbook screen and then you can just drag/drop from finder. the whole setup process took me like 5 minutes...
on my home wifi network i'm getting transfer rates of about 3mps. a little slow for huge files, like movies, but perfectly fine for anything else. it's actually really nice not having to hook up with a cable. i may just use this as my go-to setup even when android file transfer get's updated for the tab.
if you google it there's a thread somewhere that details how to set this up...

If you are wanting to sync with files and playlists in iTunes, i use iSyncr. There are free options for USB amd WiFi as well as Mac/PC. The full versions are only $.99 if i recall. Ive used it on my Hero, Evo, Epic, Transformer, and now Galaxy Tab10.1. I have synchronized videos, podcasts, and music. Not really tried photos. Another useful function: it has an option to push new photos, amazon mp3, and video files from your android device to your computer.
The developers are responsive and nice to deal with. So I highly recommend as this solution as stood the test of time and Android updates. That says alot as ive noticed some apps can easily fall off the market or become out of date.

Does anybody know of a way to assign a drive letter to a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1? I would like to sync a wide variety of files between it and my Windows XP PC via USB cable using third party synchronization software (2BrightSparks SyncBackSE)? The MTP supports manual drag-and-drop, but I need to enable a more sophisticated and automated syncing mechanism than that, and it has to work for all file types.
I tried FTP-based methods via WiFi (via SwiFTP), and found that it worked poorly because the file modification dates were not maintained over FTP.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't get (nor can figure out) how to map a drive under Windows 7 (64-bit). It does map the device for access but as "GT-P7510" then "Tablet" then dirs under Windows Explorer. It's not shown in Device Management either. Perhaps it's a Win7 or 64-bit driver issue/limitation?

I attached an image showing how different devices show up under "My Computer" on my PC. Windows automatically assigns drive letters to USB mass storage devices. This works wonderfully for a USB hard drive (E: ) or my Motorola Droid X (G: and I: ), which is running Android 2.2.1. Unfortunately, my Galaxy Tab 10.1 (Running Android 3.1) is listed as a "Portable Media Player" under "My Computer" in Windows Explorer. It apparently can only be accessed by Media Transfer Protocol (MTP), which is different from assigning the device a drive letter. This is a huge disadvantage.
I ran Computer Management to try to change the drive letter of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and do not have the option. I attached an image showing that also. Note that I can change the USB hard drive and Droid X drives which is what I want to do for the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

I have the same problem in Windows XP and Win7 32-bit. I think the issue revolves around Samsung's decision to require MTP to communicate with the tablet from a PC, and some tricks will be necessary to get around it. What we need is a way to trick Windows XP / 7 into thinking the Portable Media Device is a drive.

That's the only time the MTP mode will kick in (when debug is off)....but no, no driveletter access just a device.
Details on just what MTP is and why we don't easily get a Driveletter.

Tried and failed. The method described on the addictivetips website does not actually make the Galaxy Tab 10.1 show up as a USB Mass Storage Device, as the page claims. It just enables the Personal Media Player, i.e., MTP mode, which is where we were when we started this thread.

You need to have latest version of kies installed also. you don't need to use kies but is just active in the background and displayed on screen of tab.

This thread is about the fact that the [OP] was trying to find a way to map a driveletter. MTP IS WORKING for us, but we both were hunting for a way/app/tool/cmd/hack to get better windows-drive access -IF- there was a way to obtain it.
We don't need to keep trying drivers and steps that provide the same MTP access we started with. I think this fact got lost so I am restating here.
Seems like a Windows vs Linux limitation so unless there is new info on that aspect I guess we are done here.

To clear this up for future readers of this thread or potential Galaxy Tab 10.1 buyers I would like to add that the fact that one can "see" the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the "My Computer" file menu does not mean that it is accessible as a drive. That means that generalized, high-quality, business-grade synchronization software such as SyncBackSE (i.e., non-Kies) that operates on all files rather than just pictures, books, videos, and podcasts, does not work.
Practically, this means that if you bought the tablet because you wanted a tool for easily accessing and reviewing .ppt, .doc, .pdf, .html, .xls, etc., files and you want to easily and quickly sync them with your desktop PC over USB with a single click, you've got a problem. I can sync my Droid X with my PC using SyncBackSE with a single click because Windows sees it as a drive. That makes me happy, as my desktop PC is then effectively in my pocket. Apparently I cannot do that with my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, which bums me out.
Maybe I should return my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, get an iPad 2, jailbreak it, and try using iPhone Explorer. Maybe that would solve the problem, but that is another thread in another forum.
I know its not a solution but using Dropbox to sync documents could remove the need to do this. If you want to look at .ppt, .doc etc files then this could allow syncing without wires.

I think it's just an ease-of-use complaint. I can connect my Android phone to my PC, it gets a driveletter, and I can use ANY Windows program to push or pull content as I please. I can not do that with my tab because of this limitation. Alas, (sigh) an real SD-Card would have addressed this.
GT10.1x2 for the win perhaps??

Thank you for the suggestion and the acknowledgement that you understand the problem. It's a decent idea, and there are similar options such as SugarSync that I have also tried. Syncing via FTP would work fine if the files maintained their modification dates, and I haven't found an FTP server app that handles that.
DropBox costs $9.99 per month for between 2 and 50 GB worth of files, and I bought the 32-GB Galaxy Tab 10.1 since I have 20 GB of files that I want to put on it. The principle of payin' for syncin' bothers me. I don't want to pay a monthly fee so that I can sync my files between my PC and my tablet. To me that's like paying a monthly fee for the ability to move my paper books from one wooden shelf to another in my office. I own both shelves and I own the books. Wouldn't I have to be a sucker to pay for the ability to transfer them between shelves? I understand that real books are not electrical signals and cannot be transported over the air or through wires, I'm talking about moving, not syncing, I don't own the wires or the WiFi terminals, etc. I get it. It's just an attempt at a real-world analogy.

I don't think it will help with my (rare) case as I work from home and VPN into the corp office. I can't use WIFI for this type of sharing and the VPN adapter is the only network possible on the device at that time. Just another limitation that is a factor is a solution

I’m looking to get the 10.1 but am having a few reservations due to MAC incompatibility.
To test whether it would work or not, I downloaded Kies for MAC 2.0 onto my Macbook pro X 10.5.6 and although it allowed me to transfer music files onto Kies (even those purchased from itunes) it wouldn’t add any video’s regardless of the format (I tried Xvid, .avi, mp4 etc) and message was ‘no files found’. Note, I don’t have the device yet, just wanted to see if Kies would work at stage 1 and get the files in a ready state to transfer as and when.
I really want to like this tablet and am trying to move away from Apple but if I can’t even transfer video files across easily, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of point and is forcing me to stick with them. I also really wanted a tablet which would play most things thrown at it without having to convert and this is the only tab I’m looking at given its size and thickness. I’m sure there are apps that could be used, but if I can’t even get the files onto the 10.1 tablet….!
Most of the files I have are .avi and a few mkv, any feedback from MAC users and their Galaxy 10.1 would be really appreciated and how they transfer the video’s onto it.

I have the same problem with my tab i picked up last Friday. Kies just terrible and just won't let me add video files to its library so that I can then transfer then on to the tab.
The best method is wireless transfer. Use something like File Expert or ES Explorer to transfer via wifi if you set up a share on your Mac. The share does need to have SMB turned on. Click on options in the shared folders section in settings and tick SMB.
or if you use Filezilla on your Mac you can set up a FTP server on your tab using 'FTPserver' app and then type in the ip, user name and password that you set up and can transfer over movie files that way.
If you find out any better methods please let me know.
i wonder whether this way can help you:
before you connect your GT to PC, setup your Galaxy Tab for Kies connection following the steps: press the Menu key. In the Menu interface, select Settings>Wireless and network>USB settings>Samsung Kies.
Note: Ensure your USB cable is unplugged.

My experience with the phone (firmware .73) and my Mac (OS X 10.7.3 Lion) is particularly bad:
Unable to perform drag and drop media transfer like previous Android devices.
The Official Mac Bridge is very buggy (Even on latest update ver2.1), will stuck when transferring lots of file, and does not work with lossless music
Unable to perform USB tethering
Don't get me wrong, the phone itself is great, but I just don't understand why it works bad on a Mac.
Please share your experience and possible fix, if any.

I suspect a very high proportion of Mac users would choose an iPhone so the number of S users on OSX would be very small.
I have Mac but only sync one playlist at the time if I click on too many playlist then the phone just hang. No option for back up
Use wifi file explorer pro or swiftp to transfer files over wifi.

In fact I switched from iPhone 4 to XS...
I used to have a Huawei phone and a HP TouchPad.
Both works fine on a Mac, just this...

I only created one huge playlist (containing about 800 songs).
But it also hang after syncinig half of the playlist.

I aslo switched from iPhone4 to Xperia S... and have exactly the same problems with copying music using Mac bridge... I even posted on the Sony forum for this and got a reply that asked for more information.. and after i gave it never heard from them again...
I now use double twist and air sync to copy music to my phone.
Mac bridge seems to work ok on other media files just not mp3's.
Really lame on Sony's part.
I'm using bootcamp, just so I can use the XS to it's fullest.

OK. So apparently Sony DID try to fix some bugs in the Mac Bridge.
Ver. 2.1 (current) added more options on the Mac Bridge, and it seems the playlist problem works better. Although OS X's Image Capture will not read the device, there's now a direct import photo to folder in the latest version of Mac Bridge.
I am still unable put my entire playlist into the phone though, as the Mac Bridge hangs again when it has transferred about 80% of my songs. I also don't seem to find a workable wired solution for drag-drop file transfer.
Finally, was anyone able to perform backup through the Mac Bridge?
I tried two times and every step return "Failed".
Come on Sony... :-(

I thought for awhile that Sony Bridge hangs when transferring songs, but it works for me. Give it a little patience
The problem i have though is that when a new song is added to the playlist and Sony Bridge detects it and sync it to the phone, the phone itself doesnt update the playlist but will have the new songs added.
I was able to perform backup through MacBridge but it seems like it uses a lot of the Macs resources when doing this.
Mac users are always eternally complaining about one thing or another.
I work for a hardware and software rental company and we only ever get Mac users calling in with issues.
I don't understand you guys, you buy an inferior platform that struggles to deal with a computing ecosystem that was built around windows.
I hope making the switch from IOS to Android will reveal something to you Apple fan. The simple truth they make very basic devices which only work well if you stay within the jurisdiction of Apple.
Next time get a flipping PC like 98% of the flipping world.
Stop using a minority device and wonder why developers don't spend enough optimizing their kit for this deluded minority.

Right, just because I complain about *SONY*'s software makes me another mac complain retard, huh?
To be honest, I've been on a Mac for more than a year, with no problem on both hardware and software at all, while I clearly remember my Windows 7 desktop hangs occasionally just for many basic stuff. My last Android device works great with my Mac too, so it's not a Mac problem in any sense.
I don't really want to argue with you about OS (it's pointless) here, but please let me remind you that this is a Mac discussion/support thread, if you have nothing useful to say, just leave, no one force you to reply.

I'd rather have a platform that hangs occasionally than one that throws up issues and doesn't work at all with a lot of stuff. If you haven't had any issues with your Mac, that's probably because you've so far stuck to basic computing.
Like I said, Macs regularly throw up issues connecting to third party hardware and I know because I spend many hours each week dealing with these problems.
There is absolutely nothing you can say to change this opinion.

I had been using Double Twist with my other Android devices but found that the Sony didn't always show up in the menu, so I started to use Isyncr. It works well enough but some songs for some unknown reason won't make it through. I had to remove some songs from my playlist that were causing this and then it was ok. But Double Twist does not see these playlists now so I have to use the built-in app, Rocket player, or PowerAmp. I just use the stock music app now.
As for file access, I happen to be running Parallels, and therefore I can mount the phone on my mac, and as my Windows Desktop can "see" my Mac disk, it's very easy to access the phone. But I agree, it's stupid to have to do this.
The Sony Bridge was goofy for me - I would see for example a duplicate Music folder and music folder (note the case difference) and one folder was spawning duplicates. Deleted one and the other disappeared too! Who knows was weirdness was happening. So I didn't use it. As for photos, I just copy manually; forget syncing to iPhoto, but that's how I always did it for all my other devices.

tl;dr I need either a solid, light OS replacement for Android 2.3 on my Atrix, or I need a video streaming and virtualization app with no lag that works between android devices and either windows or linux desktop.
First I'd like to say how impressed I am with you folks. Massive amounts of work most be done on a regular basis, and so I tip my hat to you in thanks for looking at my potential problem/question.
I've got two devices that I'd like to make some serious software changes to, one of them my Atrix (the other is a Flytouch Tablet ARM11 with Android 2.3, but that's for a different forum). Let me start by saying that I like to think of myself as very technically literate, but when it comes to linux I just don't have nearly as much experience as I do with windows/mac, and it is about to really show.
What I want to do is load a light Linux OS on these devices. Normally, if I was going to install a new windows kernel on a machine I would copy an ISO to a USB thumb drive and make the drive bootable (using the MS program Windows 7 USB/DVD maker), then startup the PC and either through the BIOS or by hitting the proper button during the startup sequence I would ask the PC to boot into the drive and begin the installation.
Questions:
What is the image file type for mobile OS's?
How would one choose the right type of linux OS for an Atrix?
What is the difference between flashing a ROM and installing and OS?
Why is it when I updated my phone recently that it became unrooted?
(and) Is there any way to revert this process to make rooting easier?
Is there any way to capture a video output (like a stream) and broadcast it to these mobile devices so I can avoid changing their software alltogether?
(and) Could I just remotely control another PC from the mobile device, letting it do all the actual computing?
Can I use the Webtop Dock as a monitor for my desktop if I can find the proper HDMI cable to connect it to the HDMI output on my desktop video card?
(and) Can I also connect the Micro USB and use the keyboard/mouse (hooked into my desktop motherboard) on it as well?
(and finally) Can I use my Atrix as a prototype omni-tool by docking it in a docking station, attaching various tools that work with a linux operating system (wide-spectrum ultrasound imaging, temperature monitors, vital monitors, electronic laser saw (USB) (with separate power attachment of course) and extendable, movable USB cameras?) and then strapping it onto my wrist with a cool leather bracer design?
My end-goal is to have all three of these devices on the same network, with the ability to seamlessly access my data between them. For example, if I'm working on a document, I'd like to be able to access the document in a document editing program across all the platforms (imagine google docs with multiple users) however with one MAJOR stipulation: I'll be on a local network with NO INTERNET ACCESS!
Briefly (to better help you understand just what I'm trying to do) I am a freelance archaeologist/deep sea explorer/ROV tinkerer about to do a series of surveys mostly by myself in some VERY remote locations. I'll have a Wi-Fi network to link all of my devices together running out of my boat, but it's only for data sharing between each other, and since Satellite Internet is a joke, I can't think of any way to get data out there, and I've decided to live without it while I'm away.
I have a webtop dock for my Atrix, and the environment developed by Motorola is far too restrictive. I've tried countless fixes to try and get the webtop2SD to work, but I must be doing something wrong (Maybe the latest update screwed it?). I think since I'd like to use some linux applications while on the mobile devices, I would rather install a custom OS for both.

Even more simply, I'd like to stream the video feed and remotely control my desktop PC (located on the boat) on the mobile devices, but with yet another stipulation: I can't have FPS lag (I usually get 1-2 FPS with all the virtualization and remote control apps I've tried). This would in some senses be the preferred option, since I really don't want to spend oodles of hours trying to get some program to work in a difficult, restricted environment like these mobile device's current OS's. Is there a good, non-lagging version of desktop virtualization for Android OS?
About that webdock: I can't seem to find a female-to-female micro HDMI cable anywhere on the internet, thought I did find one Micro HDMI extension cable, and bought it promptly. I could buy another, but cut the male ends off and splice the female parts together (**** just got kinky). But if I could, would this work?

I've personally never found any kind of remote desktop software that works without lag, but it might be possible to find some. Someone else might know what to tell you there.
After doing some basic searching, the only collaborative document solution that I've found has been Etherpad Lite. You could set up a desktop or laptop running linux as the server, and all the other devices on your small network could (theoretically) run a browser based client similar (but far less advanced) than Google Docs. This way, everything on your LAN/WLAN could access the application, if it's stout enough to support your needs.

I have always found Teamviewer great for remote PC control from my Atrix. They have a nice app and free license for home/personal use. I get minimal lag controlling my PC at home when at work, but that's over WiFi. Not very fast and pretty laggy if I am on data with my Atrix.
BTW............I can work on documents, transfer files to and from PC's and laptops, print documents on my wireless printer, etc. across my home network from my Atrix, all routed through a Netgear WNR3500L running stock firmware (dd-wrt actually slowed my network down and reduced WiFi range considerably, so I reverted to stock).
First, there is no "magic" within the lapdock device. It is a nice HDMI screen, a couple crappy input devices on the USB side, and a battery. The standard Moto software does recognise the usb device and do some software magic, but certainly you could use the dock on it's own w/o the phone.
As to completely replacing the /osh webtop OS that Motorola provides, that is challanging.
There are 2 basic ways to open it up though. Go to the developers subforum and look for webtop2sd and "full Debian".
Somebody did post recently with an attempt to fully replace the webtop OS. he was using gentoo, so look for that and you should find it. But I suspect it is early, and likely to be a significant WP.
As to learning all this ****. If you do some Linux developement or heavy hacking (which it kind of sounds like) you should set up a full full blown 'droid dev platform and start playing. It is big and bulky, but you will learn faster that way than just searbhing around.
EDIT: just reread your post that you are light on Linux. if you want to do anything more than just follow along, it might be a good idea to setup something like an Ubuntu and get familiar there. 'Droid is way different looking (it really basterdises things around) but yoiu need to know both if you want to play with webtop hacks.
