How to speed up web browsing: 1. Root, 2. Install AdAway - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

... Done!
For me its quite an improvement because the browser doesnt load all the crap that is embedded on many websites!

I've personally used Adblock for a long time, but yeah, same idea. I plan on rooting my TP tonight, almost solely for ad blocking.
EDIT: Whoops. I use AdFree, not AdBlock.

i also used adblock, but adaway seems really nice and has more options. you should try it!

+1 to this or any other ad removing software.
When I rooted under HC, it was the first thing I installed after superuser.

I'm agree that ads can be a pain.. but please think that those are part of how android developers who offers free apps in the market get some money for their work. I'm not saying no to do it, just Think about it.

Honestly, the ads are more of an issue in the browser for me, but I get your point. Personally, I regularly purchase the paid ad-free version of apps that I love rather than using the free version and removing the ads.

ads in most android apps are ok i think, the ads on many websites are just ridiculous! i'm always shocked when looking at websites on a computer that doesnt have adblock installed, on some sites this great plugin makes the site at least readable!
i agree that app devs are suffering from those methods and i wish there was an app like adaway that blocked only browser ads, but there isnt (at least to my knowledge)....

Hey folks, I'm rooted, have busybox, but am having trouble getting AdAway to work properly on my TFP. It ends up telling me that the Applying failed -- "Applying the hosts file to your system failed"
It tells me that I should try changing the target location of the hosts file, but I've tried both and nothing works. Is there a special/custom location to the target file?

I have seen this error several times, then it fixes hours later. I often think the server(s) that AdAway is pinging to get the host files are down or busy or overloaded or just not stout enough for the traffic so we get these errors. Try again later. I do, and it always works out.

Some of the logic in here is funny... It is okay to block ads on the web - still taking money out of someone's pocket - but not as "cool" to block them on your phone because then a "dev" loses out. Please. Hypocrisy at it's finest. Someone on the web or a dev on a mobile device putting ads in the GUI are all open season and no one gets a pass any more than the other.

2 questions:
- do you have superuser installed?
- do other root apps work? (you can test root access with "ota root keeper")

If he is getting that error, he is properly rooted. He could not get that error without the app running and for the app to run, you need root.
It is not a root issue as I pointed out in the last page, I have seen this before numerous times, it is very much likely an error with the app getting access to the servers with the host files to download. Time has always fixed it for me. Saw it last night, today all worked fine.

Trying this now. So with this it isnt necessary to do the about:debug option with the browser setting thats posted below?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1411438&highlight=browser

Just installed, applied it and rebooted. Seems to be working good so far. Will out iit throught the paces to see.
Is this a set n leave alone app or do you constantly need to go in and update the host files or sources or whatever?
Browser does seem faster though...

Anyone have Adfree working ??

I had adfree working on my Galaxy I7500 ( GAOSP ) in it worked just fine with my Weathereye app. Now that I have the Atrix with the Weathereye app, Adfree just don't remove the ads from it. Anyone else have an issue ?
Working fine for me. Connect your Atrix to the computer, run adb and try "su" (or do this in Terminal on your phone). Maybe you don't really have root access.
Don't have Terminal showing in the apps list. I rooted via aRoot if it matters. Titanium Backup works fine. To be perfectly honest, I have very little experience with adb. Refresh my memory to try su via adb. I feel like a noob ...
EDIT: Found ADB for Dummies. I do, in fact, have su access. Any chance you can download Weathereye and see if you get ads at the bottom ?? I wonder if its a difference in phones that's causing this ...
Just installed it. No ads here, brotha. I know what you're talking about though - I've seen them before.
Try running Cache Cleaner and/or restarting your phone. There could be DNS info still lurking in the background pulling the ads.
Put a check by Symlink and also you could try doing Revert and then Download and install Hosts again if that doesn't work. Just keep buggering with it and it should work. I have an AT&T Atrix but my buddy has a Bell one and we got his rooted and ran Adfree last night with success. Sometimes it just takes some tinkering.
P.S. Maybe uninstall it and reinstall it after doing the Adfree stuff too. Trying to throw all the tips I can think of. I know that ads freakin' SUCK!!
Thanks for the tips, I'll play some more and see what I get. I'll let you know !
I have AdFree and it works on all apps so far. Only have about 20 apps downloaded, though.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Well, I am at a loss. I uninstalled weathereye. Downloaded cachecleaner and android assistant. Reverted, then rebooted. Ran cachecleaner, re-downloaded hosts. Checked Symlink. Rebooted phone and re-installed Weathereye. Damned ads still appear. Grrrr !! I know this app will run without ads, I have done it before. I am convinced myself I am not insane, but that could change soon.
Well I have tried just about everything. No ads in Angry Birds, but they do persist in Weathereye. Oh well, guess I'll have to live with it. Maybe it'll sort itself out someday.
You could always replace the hosts file, its a bit more complex but it stops every ad, in the browser or anywhere else.

this is likely due to AdFree not having the updates to the ad sites. AdFree works by replacing your hosts file with a list of known ad sites that loop back to itself, so that you are never presented the ad. if one app is still showing ads, then AdFree needs to update their master list to add in that site

The thing is, is that I had no ads in this app when I was using AdFree with my Galaxy. That's partly I am a little frustrated and confused why its not working. Its not the end of the world if I can't get it removed, but it is annoying that these ads are links that sometimes I accidently hit.
i'm having the same exact problem, except my adfree doesn't block anything.
I found this thread: Block ads on your android phone. Haven't tried it yet, but I see no reason why it won't work.
No luck. I replaced the hosts file in /system/etc and no dice. I saw a hosts file in /etc/, should I be replacing that too ??
Anyone have any updated info on getting AdFree to work on the Atrix?
I rooted with Gladroot, rebooted the phone, cleared the cache yet in every app I'm seeing ads.
This is driving me nuts because I had no problems with this on my Milestone or Galaxy S. *sigh* Help!...
Really? I just got a Bell Atrix and put Adfree. Superuser requested access, I granted it, updated the .hosts and boom - no ads. Did this to a friend's Bell Atrix and another friend's AT&T Atrix and boom - no ads.
Just did it to my wife's Desire Z last night too because I put a new ROM on there... and no ads. Are you sure you guys are allowing Superuser? I don't know why the heck it works on every phone I do it to but not on phones for people here? Have you explored all the options in Adfree or used it on a wireless network?

It started with no ads (like for 15min), but now it's not working at all. I did the reboot, cleared the cache, and even installed Busybox and ads are everywhere. I tried to redownload, but adfree says I'm up to date.
This is driving me nuts because I never had a problem with this on other phones.
Also I did the opt out of ads in the market as well and that didn't work either:
http://phandroid.com/2011/04/16/google-letting-users-opt-out-of-ad-targeting-via-market/
Looks like a couple of people in the comments section of that page are having the same issue?...
I noticed the other day that in the /etc directory ( not the system/etc/ directory ) that there is a hosts file, a hosts.allow file and a hosts.deny file. I wonder if I copy everything that adfree put in the host file and put it into the host.deny file if that would fix it ...
Hi, I made this account just to post a reply to this thread. I have a GladRooted Bell Atrix and am using Adfree. I noticed it worked before then suddenly stopped...
What I now realized, it works when I am on Wifi!!! but not on the Bell network!! So now how do we get it to work when on the Bell Network???
I am thinking this has to do with the Bell's version of the Atrix software since this is not an issue for AT&T users or for other Bell customers on other phones.

Can anyone get adfree to run correctly ?

This isn't really in the wrong section (I had to think about it a sec).
I cannot get ad free to run correctly, and YES, I am running temp-root without issue.
It installs fine and has asked for (and received) SU permissions.
Downloads and installs the hosts file just fine.
I still have those annoying arsed ads all over the place. Yep tried rebooting, re-rooting, all of that.
Is it due to the proxy sprint uses, the ability to only temp-root, the fact that this hardware is so new and might not be supported by the program (which should really be transparent to the program).....or is it just gingerbread wants you to be spammed to death and has blocked adfree from running right ?!?!?
Input anyone ?
Bueller ?

[Q] adfree not working?

hey guys.
i've always been a strong supporter of developers. I buy all the apps that I can and I think are worth it. I even have some that I've paid for that I no longer have installed. but some apps simply don't give you the option of paying for an ad-free version. so i've used adfree for over a year on my OG Evo 4G.
I have adfree now on my Evo 3D and even though it says the host files are up-to-date and the app has root access, i still have ads in almost all my apps!
is there something i'm doing wrong? or is adfree simply not working with GB? is there an alternative?
thanks.
I've never had luck with Adfree. It worked with admob ads but never in-game ads, even with an updated host file. I think you need to find out what host your app uses and manually add it in.

have you tried rebooting after installing the hosts? like a regular reboot. then check again.
i've never rebooted immediately after updating the hosts file...but eventually I end up rebooting and there is no difference. unless you're saying I need to reboot immediately or the file gets overwritten by android somehow.

two ideas come to mind on ways to determine the exact server the ad program is pulling the ad data from
1) i was watching logcat the other day while using rom manager. side note: i wasn't bored i was double checking my rom was showing up there and it does! i noticed in logcat some of the ad programs, like the one used by rom manager, output a lot of detail about their actions. you might be able to see which hosts the in application ad program is using to pull down the ads by watching logcat.
2) a little more technical of a method would be to run netstat on the phone. of course, i would do a fresh reboot and wait until everything updates and turn off a lot of the syncing to eliminate noise in netstat but it should show the ip address of the ad server connection!
you probably already know this but just to state it for anybody reading this now or later, once you have the ip address (hostname) of the ad server, you can add to the /etc/hosts file and point it to 127.0.0.1.
although, after typing that up, now i'm thinking if they hard code the ip address to the ad server in the application, the /etc/hosts file might not help ... then you might have to add a route to ifconfig and point that ip at the localhost ... but i might be getting off topic as i'm speculating at this point!
hope those two suggestions help. if you have a chance to research or implement, let us know!
****All credit goes to user yareally. This is his host file he posted in a different section I just reposted the link.***
Here is a great host file you can place manually.
Go to this link and at the top there is a d/l button. The file will be named hosts.
https://gist.github.com/543651c8d3bb7992f2be
Then using root explorer or a similar app mount system as r/w, and move the file to /system/etc/
Set the permissions as such:
Owner: read, write
Group:read
Other:read
Or just use terminal emulator and type:
su
chmod 644 /system/etc/hosts
Now reboot and your done!

Most ROMs on the Evo 4G had adblocking in them. I'm sure they also have that in the Evo 3D. Try flashing Synergy, I think that has ad blocking in it.

are you doing anything beyond downloading from market and updating hosts files?
im a long time user on my Evo 4G and it worked wonders. now on my Evo 3D the ads dont stop :-(
That is really really strange. Are you getting adds in ALL apps or is it just a couple. It's possible they are using some newer ad hosts that haven't been added to the common host files that can be found around. With that host file I linked to I never get any adds in apps and barley a one in the browser. I actually switched to it for the specific reason of adfree not working for me anymore.
Sorry I forgot to say if you have that file in the right place permissions set and you rebooted and still no luck I don't know what to tell ya sorry.

How to pretend I'm not rooted...

Have a rooted Thunderbolt. Am trying to install an app approved by my employer to access email, calendar, and contacts from my phone instead of using my employer issued blackberry. I'm all approved but ran into a snag.
It locked the application because my phone is rooted.
None of the pre-requisites mention it not being allowed on a rooted phone, but that's beside the point. Is there a way to make the app think it's not rooted? I'd rather carry my Blackberry around as a seoncd phone, as awful as it is, than unroot my phone and go back to a stock rom.
Didn't see anything when searching...please help!
Thunderbolt running DasBAMF Forever 1.0.7, imoseyons 3.8 lean kernal
What email client are you trying to set up? I have read a few threads about people having issues with corporate email accounts on rooted phones. I do not think I've ever read a solution that worked either. Do some searches for Corporate Email with root on the normal forums we all browse and I'm sure you will see the number of people asking to accomplish this is significant.
It's a client called "Good". It basically encapsulates all company information (email, contacts, calendars) encrypted within the application. Also allows the IT department to wipe the data remotely without wiping your phone. Company I work for is a huge company "300k plus) and has always been BlackBerry only. They're just now rolling this out to android and iphone...but the "Rooted?" criteria is messing me up.
I'll keep searching, but have had little luck so far.
Just unroot if it is a work phone, why take chances.
If I helped you in any way please use the thank you button
The first time you launched it, did it request superuser permissions ? If so, and you said "allow", it knows you're phone is rooted by the exit code it got back from the 'su' app. If that happens, try this:
- in your app drawer, find the program "Superuser" and launch it.
- scroll through list to find "Good", then tap it
- depending on your version of SU you might have different options to choose here
- tap the 'trashcan' icon
- exit Superuser app and try your "Good" app again
If that doesn't work, try this:
- uninstall app
- reinstall app
- launch app
- DENY access to superuser rights when prompted
If it's determining it has root access another way, I can't help...

It's not a work phone...it's my personal phone. The whole idea is you turn in your BlackBerry and then they give you a $25/mo allowance toward your personal cell bill, then you can still access all the stuff you need from work.
FWIW, I searched the forum (all devices) for "Good for Enterprise" and hit the jackpot. Guess it's all about phrasing it right. Here's an example of one of the helpful links:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032268
So, once i have a custom ROM, is there a way to re-root but keep the ROM? Would I lose access to CWM (for nandroid backups)? I assume I'd lose titanium backup and wireless tether...tough choices. I haven't lived without root in so long that I don't know if I can do it...
Hehe, interesting...
Good for Enterprise on rooted phones
Have fun reading !! I haven't checked any of those results yet myself.
---------- Post added at 04:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:13 PM ----------
Based on the first link I checked from ^^ above ^^, it doesn't base it on how you respond to Superuser, it simply looks for the existence of su.apk, superuser.apk, etc. If it finds them, it stops. And no, renaming those files, then running it won't work either as it checks every time it's run !!
One alternative is:
Create a script file that a) renames the relevant superuser files, b) launches "Good", and finally, when "Good" exits, c) renames the superuser files back to their original names.
---------- Post added at 04:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:20 PM ----------
Recent update to this app, according to "What's New" page in the Market (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.good.android.gfe&hl=en): Security Enhancements: Better detection of rooted devices to protect your information You may be fighting a losing battle on this one. Even if you figure a way around it, rest assured that the developers of the app browse Android forums seeing how people are NOW getting around their detection routines and will defeat those next.
Of course, it's POSSIBLE that turning this detection on is an admin-level setting that you could ask the IT folks to turn off. It sounds like it's phone-level though, unless on launch, it first queries it's back-end server and then does the relevant checks on the phone side.
It checks every time it's launched, and can be checked at any time. Sucks.
To be honest, I don't blame them for blocking rooted phones...as sensitive as the information is that will be in the app, I'd probably do it too. I just don't want to give up my custom ROM, wireless tether and titanium backup
Would deleting su and superuser.apk have any negative effects (other than disallowing rooted apps)? From what i can tell, those are what Good uses to check for root. Removing them would effectively remove root, so I would be in compliance. And in theory, i could just restore from a rooted nandroid backup to get root back, right?

This was the closest yet...fantastic app. It does successfully remove su and temporarily removes root. However, it looks like GFE also checks for existence of hte superuser.apk. I've messaged the dev to see if there's a way to hide that, but considering that's what's used to root and unroot at will, not sure how that'd work. Hopefully the dev is smarter than me and can figure something out! But very close.

I wish. This is the only way they allow due to the extra encryption and ability to remotely wipe data.
Two Words: Dual Boot.
Get your regular "At home" rooted rom all nice and prettied up, then when you get in the car for work, boot into a stock rom that isn't rooted for work specifically.

How to remove "Internet connection requirement" from Android apps?

Hi, I have an app which looks like the developer has removed their servers so it always fails the "internet connection" check.
Its IONROAD. A AR driving app.
I paid for the PRO version so its all good. I use an older version not the latest as I hate the latest version.
99% of the app is using the GPS or the camera. It does check the internet for the weather and a few little things.
I've tried it at home while connected to wireless, in the car while connected to Mobile Data, I've uninstalled, reinstalled and updated and all versions fail the internet checks. To me it looks like they closed their servers so the app refuses to work without the internet so it will never work again.
What I want to do is remove that internet check so it will keep working without the need for their servers. If it never connects to the internet it doesn't bother me. I dont care for the current weather in a AR driving app, I care for how close the car in front of me is or if i'm drifting out of the lane I'm in. Absolutely nothing to do with the internet so how do I remove that check?
I have the APK, trying to get it into the Android SDK and not sure how? Even if I do get it there what do I remove?
All I want is that internet check removed. As I said I paid for the app so the licence check always passes as I paid for it.
The dev has abandoned the app, they refuse to reply or update. As they closed their servers I'm guessing they totally abandoned the app.
Any help what to remove and how to remove it? Is it an easy unzip, edit a file then zip and reinstall? Or is it a complete import into SDK, rebuild, test, etc and make a whole new app?
I'm not sure what or how to edit it.
Thanks
BTW, Here are links to the apps. (if the link doesn't work use the txt below it. just add HTTP: to the start)

It is not a simple matter as it would require ripping the app apart and searching through smali code for the server stuff to be removed. As that is what it is doing. It uses their servers to send the weather and a few other things. Now that their servers are off you can bet that it wont be working for long as it will also use other info for things connected to the gps.

The app refuses to work completely. As soon as it loads up it says there is no internet and closes. Thats why I want to remove the need for their servers and internet.
I was hoping there might be some sort of offline mode built in I could enable or remove the "no internet connection" error so it never fails.
Go have a look at the app and you will see you cant do anything as it fails the internet check when the app loads. As they have closed the servers then they have abandoned the app so we can do what we want with it as they obviously dont care about it anymore.
The problem I have is its the best AR driving app there is for android and as they abandoned it there is nothing to replace it with as all the others are crap.
Hi, similar problem to the GoPro app where internet connection is required. I would also really like to remove the internet checking and although the app is free are we getting in to the areas of cracking?
Please update this if you get somewhere.
Xposed mod anyone?

Hi, I have an app which looks like the developer has removed their servers so it always fails the "internet connection" check.
Its IONROAD. A AR driving app.
I paid for the PRO version so its all good. I use an older version not the latest as I hate the latest version.
99% of the app is using the GPS or the camera. It does check the internet for the weather and a few little things.

Just because they abandon it doesn't meant that they might not throw a fit at having it edited. I'll take a look at the decompiled apk. I have a feeling that everything it does will be tied to the servers so even if we did stop it from checking the servers the stuff you want might still not work.

Great thanks.
When the app worked it was mainly GPS and camera stuff, It would get the weather from the server and it does keep a log at the server so it will send a result at the end but while your driving I doubt it does anything with the server as I've been to some places without phone reception and it still worked fine.
Maybe there is only a check when it loads up that we need to remove?

Not sure what happened? the link did work. Here are new links. Oh, the forum changes the links and breaks them.
I could have more luck if I knew what apps to use.
How do you decrypt apps?
What should I edit and look for when its decrypted? (I'm guessing a link to the website or something like that?)
How do I encrypted it again and pack it back into a working APK?
I've tried a few apps and had no luck.

There are tons of tutorials on how to decompile the app. You will need a pc. As for what to look for. That is hit or miss really. As it is in smali and not Java. Also there could be safe guards that if the code is removed then the app won't work. Also some apps can't be decompiler at all as they self destruct if they are.

Ok. I'll wait and hope someone has a go at doing it. As I said I've tried and had no luck at all thats why I'm here asking as I cant do it, someone who knows more than me hopefully will have more luck than I've had.
Anyone having a go at seeing if they can remove the connection to internet requirement?
I want to keep using v1.6.3 but I did find v1.5.1 works with only a random internet check. For my last 10 min drive it checked 3 times but I did do a 15 min drive and it never checked the whole time.
As their servers are down it will always fail if it checks.
If you know where to look you will find all different versions. I wont post where but they are available. 1.6.3 to me is the best, its the most stable, has the best features but its got the internet checks which need to be removed before you can use it as it checks at the start and closes as it cant connect to their servers.

??? I dont understand?
Their servers are down forever. they closed them so it doesnt respond. I want the app to stop checking their servers, to work 100% offline.

No I mean if you use it with gps only the app should not try to connect with the servers because it checks the network status to see if there is internet connection...

the app always tries to connect to their servers at startup. as they closed the servers it always fails and the app closes.
if you turn mobile data off it also fails and closes the app.
we need to remove the check so the app will work again.

This isn't simple.Even if we remove the permission the code of the app will try to access the internet and it will fail. but i will try it
