I have a bit of an issue with my new prime, and I thought I'd just see if anyone else is having the same issue. Wouldn't want to bother returning it if the replacement device is just going to do the same thing after all. Anyway, here's my description of the issue.
When I press down on the touchscreen towards the center, discolouration occurs. It's most noticeable on very dark, white, or single colour backgrounds. It's kind of like what you might expect would happen with an ordinary laptop touchscreen when you press down on it, except of course this is a screen that is supposed to be designed to be pressed. I ordered it from ebuyer, and I'm concerned that if I return the device, it could be a very long time till they send out a replacement, and I need it for work.
This is not a resistive touchscreen. Rather, it's capacitive. You are not supposed to be pressing it. It functions off of touch, not pressure.

You shouldn't be pressing on it hard enough to see screen distortion. The screen is fairly sensitive and doesn't require pressure; simply having your finger contact the glass should suffice.
IPS shouldn't do that under pressure. TN, *VA does. Well, of course, maybe newer IPS panels are not designed the same.
It's not something I've noticed using other phones and tablets, and I don't believe I'm putting undue pressure on the screen. You all seem to be suggesting that this is normal, but doe it happen on your devices? I'm sending it back anyway, no point in getting anything other than a perfect copy when you've spent thi much.

Wow. Just noticed something really odd with the keyboard/screen, but then it could be my phone!
If put your phone on a flat surface (ie table) - try type some letters on the right/left/bottom edge - i find it not as responsive as if you typed in the middle part of the screen. But if you hold the phone in your hands, its perfectly fine!
Anyone else getting that weird problem?
Yep
Noticed the problem to.
I'm guessing there is some screen sensitivity changes when it knows its flat on a surface.
I guess its another on the list of things to fix when the release a new build (or some devs release soem cooked ROMs).
I wonder if this is related to the capacitive nature of the touchscreen? I can replicate the effect if the phone is flat on the surface and I'm only touching it with my typing finger. However, if I rest another finger on the device, or hold it lightly by the edges (still sitting flat on the surface) it works fine.
If this is the case, I doubt any rom will be able to fix it since it is likely to be the capacitive touch screen technology and not a software "fault" per se.
Regards,
Dave
I have seen this too. I wondered if it was a perspective thing - are you pressing the right part of the screen?
are you pressing the right part of the screen?

Oh yeah, looks like I am pressing the right part. It just have to be more firmer pressing those edge buttons. It doesn't matter which way the keyboard layout is.
Anyway, thanks to everyone confirming that you got the same problem. I would have thought it was hardware related, but it could be software related I suppose. Perhaps whatever software is trying to rotate the keyboard is having a hard time to work out what direction to show the keyboard is causing that weird problem
Try holding the phone between thumb and forefinger whilst it is on a flat surface and then typing. If I do this, I have no issues, but the second I remove my fingers, I then get the lack of response for the keys on the bottom row of the device.
Regards,
Dave
mines the same may be to avoid key presses in your pocket?
I have the same problem too. It isn't a problem with all capacitive screens as the iphone never used to do this (l know, I know)
So far I've found no solution, let's hope it gets a quick fix
wow, and I thought it was only me, when I put the phone on the desk, and try use my fingers it becomes really unresponsive but when I'v got it in my hand and I'm using my thumb its all fine, hmmm really weird
it's not really a fault, but more of the nature of the capacitive screen and/or software. In comparison with the iPhone, the iPhone's capacitive screen lets you type/navigate with the phone lying on a flat surface. I find that the Hero's screen requires you to apply a tiny bit more pressure and more surface-area of your finger/thumb, for it to respond. I hope HTC somehow tweak the software for this to be more responsive with less pressure/surface-area contact required so it is usable on a flat surface - don't always want to be picking my phone up to use it at work.
i confrim, using hero without touch the metal edge result in less responsivity and difficult on multitouch operation
hope new firmware can solve this, too many errors using it like a normal keyboard on a table!
Noticed the same problem when using the Hero in my In Car Holder. Makes data input into CoPilot very difficult indeed.
A couple of observations...
I actually have mine in one of those Silicon Covers - the new style 'Gel' ones (work really well and looks good too, unlike old Silicon ones). So it's not actually about having contact with metal as such.
Problem does not occure when plugged into USB.
Now this bit could just be perception rather than reality, but I tried typing while flat (USB disconnected) when touching the coated surface around the trackball and it did not seem to improve things. Trying to do the same while touching the metal area around the speaker grill did seem to improve things. You guys observing similar ?
Anyway, I'm hoping that when I have my car charger, it will fix my CoPilot problem since this should be the same as having the USB plugged in.

Am I the only one having really poor touch recognition on my A43? Whether I use a finger or stylus, it often happens--about once in five keystrokes or more--that after releasing the touch on an on-screen keyboard, a different key additionally gets registered, sometimes not even a neighboring key. It is very hard to type in a password.
My touchscreen also has this problem. I'll hit one key and it will add another key somewhere entirely else on the screen. Menus will spaz out when I try and scroll through them.
Oh yeah, remember that problem I was having where strange spots showed up on the screen and I had to get it RMA'd? That came back on my BRAND NEW unit. I'm getting sick of the crappy screen on this otherwise great unit =[ Maybe Archos will just give me a refund and I can spend my funds on an unlocked/off contract phone with similar specs.
Sadly, I think this is a hardware issue. I'm not sure there's anything firmware can do besides ignore half of the inputs. But then, you have a non-responsive issue ...
Have you guys tried to calibrate the screen through SDE?
I have a similar issue with my A101, although it's not as bad as you guys describe - sometimes the screen just won't register my touch at all, mostly in the edges of the screen - sometimes I think it's the calluses on my fingers from playing guitar, sometimes I think it's the horrible screen they gave us....
My $0.02
So does anyone not have this problem with an A43?

You might be having better luck because the A101 has a capacitive screen with multi-touch capabilities. They're known to be more reliable than the resistive screens the 43IT's have.

I have a 43IT, which is why I posted Sorry I wasn't clear. I feel your pain. Also, I suggest using your nail or a stylus, as the pinpoint hardness of either are better than the soft, blob your fingertip makes on the screen sensor array.

I generally use a stylus. The problem is probably due to the way the plastic digitizer flexes which generates ghost movement data on release. A glass digitizer would be much better.
By the way, it is possible to ameliorate the problem slightly in software. I did that in the myKbd app for PalmOS. Basically, you filter out some very rapid motions. It doesn't affect sensitivity in any significant way.
The reason I'd like to know if everyone has this problem is because I'm going to send my A43 in for warranty repairs, and I am wondering if I should include this problem (in addition to the annoying bright 1/4" area on the screen, and the occasional timeouts when writing to internal flash that result in the device hanging).
So I bought the C-Pen but for me it's horrible. The lines aren't nearly as accurate when done with my finger and sometimes it doesn't register at all. Anyone else having this?

Returned mine the same day I received it. A cheap pen from ebay, worked much better and without missed clicks. Wasn't expecting this really. In addition, the c-pen didn't work on the capasitive buttons. The cheap one did.

Was it like really inaccurate for you too? If I drew a pretty straight the line, it would almost always come out all wobbly. Then when I drew with my finger the line would be all smooth. And on some points on the screen I couldn't even draw at all sometimes.
I am without a doubt going to send it back. Really ****ty product

The problem is that capacitive screens only have spots they react on, not every single location. So the pen has to have a large enough tip to cover at least one such spot under all conditions; something which is always given when using your finger.
(In fact your finger usually covers multiple spots)
These spots don't really allow for smooth transition in e.g. diagonals.
The cheap pens off eBay have a larger tip which covers multiple spots (like your finger) and work thus better.
On older screens or elder tablets (e.g. the Wetab) they are still unusable and will result in the same issues you're having with the c-Pen since those screens have even larger gaps between the spots.

Yeah, that makes sense. Actually I could draw a straight line with it just fine but at the upper part of the screen it became unresponsive and really annoying to use.
Can't comprehend how such a product could be advertised as "exclusively optimised for S3".
Oh no.. I placed order few days ago!
I've been researching this C-Pen to decide if I wanted one. What I read on Amazon.com is that it seems to work ONLY on an S lll. Does not work on other tablets or phones. Now, I wanted to be able to use a pen on a tablet I have so I figured this was a negative for this particular pen.
If it doesn't even work well on the S lll what is the problem? (rhetorical question). My main interest in using a pen was not as a substitute for my finger but to actually use the S Memo for sketches.
it seems to me this technology is not yet sophisticated enough for prime time.

Really?
Then how does cheap pen from ebay which has almost same surface are on the tip works smooth.

Okay,
This happens only on the bottom right of the screen, if I press down with a little bit of pressure you can see the LCD screen distort, This occurred on my 1st device (requested a replacement) the replacement does the same exact thing in the same exact area.
So is this just a overall defect with the device (Since it's present on more than 1 device I received) or something with just a bad batch?
To test:
Open up the browser, on a white screen landscape mode, just use some pressure with ur finger press on the screen and the lcd will distort/wave into blue-ish color. Do the same test around you will see that 1 side will always have this effect but the other 3 won't.
The old device this issue was far worse than the new one. Only other note to make.
No issue here

That's bad.. but it wont cause any issues if you don't press on the screen really hard
Well I'm exchanging the second device as well.
Will keep going round and round until one without a defect lands in my hand.
On my Galaxy note 2 no matter how hard I press nothing. DNA little pressure it begins, the 1st unit was very easy to cause the ripple effect, but the second unit was much harder maybe 3rd times the charm.
Well 3rd device does it as well so its an inherent trait of the product.
It sounds to me like the screen is set in tilted a little. A lot of HTC phones have this, I've noticed. Almost all the replacements I had on my rezound you can clearly see the screen set wrong from the light leakage on the bottom of the panel. Actually, I just pressed the bottom right* corner of my screen (the part that's higher) and it actually does the same thing but it's barely noticeable though on my rezound and only on darker colors.
Well the DNA is going back this is basically un acceptable to me. 3 units all of them do it, if you lightly press on the screen it will ripple.
The funny thing is I can feel the difference when you press down on the left side of the device it's much stronger than on the bottom right.
This is definitely not an issue on my phone. My One X had this issue. (coupled with the light bleed from bottom ). Looks like some DNAs are affected by same issue.
But its definitely not common thing. The second DNA I had ordered for a friend was received yesterday and both are perfect with no sign of any such screen ripple issue. Might be the case of bad batch at particular store.
No issue here on my phone. No offense, but it sounds like you are looking for a reason to switch phones. You either have extremely bad luck to get three defective phones, or you are trying too hard to find something wrong.
It happens to me when you press directly in the middle of the phone. Although it's not an issue for me, since the amount needed to press to see it would not be used on the phone on a regular day.
I'm going to try a diffrent source. Yes all the devices have this issue.
I'm going to post a video as well.
Mine does this as well, turns like a purplish color like if you pressed hard on an lcd tv. It hasnt bothered me at all and i love the phone but just wanted to say i have it too
All of the devices have this effect.
My HTC One X has this thingy but you have to press hard...which is not what's intended with a capacitive screen, the problem is that the more the phones are slim and the more screens are fragile, just touch the screen not press it
Not all devices have it but the dna def does have it.
I bought my N9 32GB white from Amazon Warehouse on Feb. 17. It was the second I'd ordered. The first had a defect (bent frame). All has seemed well with this--very minimal light bleed; no dead pixels; recessed but clicky buttons; no squishy back--in fact, very solid. For the past two weeks, I've noticed a cloudy area about 1"x1" just below the horizontal midline near the center in portrait mode. It looks like a smudge but remains after I wipe. It's particularly noticeable as I scroll white-background screens. I even changed my Tapatalk app to dark mode to avoid it. I've tried to get a pic of it, but it doesn't show up well enough, if at all.
I came across a similar situation of someone seeing dark areas on light background on his LCD panel laptop after he had sat on it. It was reported that applying extreme pressure to an LCD screen could result in this phenomenon. I have not applied any pressure to the screen, but as it is an open-boxed item, it could have happened.
I need opinions from those who know about these things as I know nothing. ATM, I'm trying to train myself to scroll a page from the center so that my fingers hide the "shadow" which is also what it looks like.
Thanks

Hi, ritchea...
Sounds like you've not had the best of luck with the N9, this being your second one.
From your description it certainly sounds like a hardware defect with the screen. A manufacturing flaw perhaps, or something happened to the device whilst in transit or in storage at the warehouse
If it really bugs you, you should get it replaced.
I'm a little OCD about this kind of thing, and no matter how much you try to convince yourself it's nothing and to avoid looking (at the screen flaw)... subsequently, you spend all your time **thinking** about not looking... And eventually you look.. And wished you hadn't... if that makes sense. It detracts from your enjoyment of the device.
Rgrds,
Ged.
I'm a bit (more than a bit, really) OCD. I've owned over a dozen devices but never experienced this so I also assume a defect. I just needed to know if this is a possible defect that is known-especially when trying to get service.
EDIT: As this thread had had over 200 views, I'm throwing more info out there to see if anyone has any further insight.
I factory reset the tab --all stock except for relocking it. Darn if the spot didn;t seem to disappear. Then it returned. At that point, I decided to revisit the back. Hmmm. There is a little give in it--not spongy, but when I applied some pressure, I heard a sound in the middle of the tab like adhesive reattaching. (I've looked at the teardown and know that a lot of tape exists but not from the back cover to the rest of the tab.) I looked at the white screen, and again, the cloud was gone. In a few minutes, it reappeared. So, I firmly rubbed the mid-back and the cloud disappeared. I've now tried it over a dozen times (after restoring my nandroid), and applying firm pressure to the back always, but temporarily, removes the cloudy area. Can someone say what's most likely causing this? (I know it's faulty hardware, but I mean, what is happening to the screen when I apply pressure? Maybe a bubble in a layer somewhere?
Because of the camera, I don't want to get into taking the back off. I chatted with HTC to make sure my Amazon warehouse tablet was covered, and was told that it is even though (from the CSR) Amazon is not an official HTC retailer.
