Benefits of Ziggy custom kernel - HTC Rezound

Any1 can explain what are the benefits of flashing from stock kernel to Ziggy kernel? New to rooting scene, so laymen terms would be great. thx

I'm not the most knowledgeable on the subject, but I believe the main benefits would be increased speed (overclocked to 1.83 GHZ) and improved battery usage. I'm sure someone else can provide more specifics.

There are a few reason to use a custom kernel. You can overclock the CPU from 1500 MHz to around 1800 MHz with Ziggys kernel. This usually makes the phone run faster. Ziggys kernel also has some settings built in that make the processor act differently under different circumstances. This usually helps with battery life. For example, when the screen is off, it may lower the processor speed to use less battery. it really gives you the user more control over your device. The kernel is also responsible for other things that get put in such as recording your phone conversation. I am probably missing more things but these should give you some ideas. Happy flashing!

Ziggys kernel is undervolted a bit which will use less battery in general. If you get a cpu control app such as "SetCPU" or "AnTuTu CPU Master" you can use profiles to underclock your processor while your screen is off/on the phone/charging/etc. Not only will it optimize performance it can also improve battery life.

EDIT: I understand you can't overclock without a customized kernal, but if I recall correctly you can underclock without it. Am I correct?
If you underclock your phone, it might get better battery life, but it perfomance will go down too and will start lagging, i don't recommend it at all.
The vibrant doesn't like profiles with less than 800 Max, it tends to freeze on wake-up. The amount of savings from an 800 MHz screen off profile is almost immeasurable as well. Also, the default conservative governor is the only one that is reliable. Therefore unless you're overclocking to start with, setcpu doesn't do anything for battery life on our phones. Best to just use a UV kernel such as BALI.

Hey man, what you want is undervolt. Underclock will slow you down, and not make a huge difference. However I undervolt by 75mv through the spectrum and have seen great results.
can't hurt to underclock to 800 though, some kernels are ok at 400 but very laggy.

Ok, I'm posting here because after doing a search, this is the very latest SetCPU thread. Recently, we finally got a worthwhile Gingerbread JVP and several ROM's (Simply Honey 3.8 & Asgard 3.1 JUST AMAZING ROM's) have finally given us some 2.3's we can keep on our phones, well in my opinion anyway.
So, I'm using cmenard's latest Bullet GB Kernel v6.1 and have decided to finally put to use the profiles section on SetCPU. Below is what I'm thinking and would enjoy a friendly conversation of what/if any benefits can be had on Gingerbread and customs Kernels using SetCPU Profiles. I read somewhere that Android is getting much better in regards to battery/performance efficiency, but I noticed a slight fall in battery life on 2.3.4 over 2.2.1 by a few hours.
My Profiles at this time.
Main SetCPU screen
200 min - 1200 max - Conservative? Smartass? Interactive? Any particular Governor worth using other than stock Conservative? - Set on Boot = YES
I'm not quite sure how the priority works on the main screen, I mean let's say I'm at 21% battery life and its time for my battery profile to kick in, but I'm still using the phone for various reasons, wifi calling or benchmarking etc. Will the phone stay at 200-1200 or will it actually use my battery profiles?
Screen Off (Set at 10 minute timeout)
100 - 800 - Conservative - Priority 100
Battery <11%
100 - 400 - Conservative - Priority 75 (Really thinking I should delete this)
Battery <21%
100 - 800 - Conservative - Priority 50
Charging
100 - 800 - Conservative - Priority 25 (Trying to keep the phone cool)
I have read that the Vibrant does not like profiles of 400 or lower when the screen is off, and this must be true as I tried 100-400, 200-400, but they all gave me wake of death until I set the max to 800 (there was no in between a.k.a 500, 600 or 700), so now 100-800 seems to work great for Screen Off. I hate this since when the screen is off the phone does not need to be doing anything other then checking gmail via wifi and notifying me using BLN blinking. Also, I tried to set a profile for Battery temp, but for what ever reason it will NOT give me the save button, so I assume GB now controls that on its own, or cmenard has removed that option from his kernel (or setcpu is borked, lol).
Any tips or concerns with my settings above? Anyone here a guru with SetCPU profiles and can see I'm a noob with profiles? lol

[Q] Enlightenment on Undervolt for WB 4.0.3

Hello guys
I'd like some help on installing the Undervolt for WB's 4.0.3 ROM
I'm on 4.0.3 stock kernel. All I have to do is flash the Undervolt addon and Ill be good or do I need other apps like CPU Master after flashing it?
I know theres a lot about it in the topic but its all untied and confusing
If someone could take some time to explain to me how it works I'll be really thankful.
dnt have wb rom but in general I believe ud update with the file provided n I believe u would need either set cpu or cpu master to be able to adjust the minimum value to the lowest 1 possible

I want to understand the difference between just setting the CPU speed with an app like CPU master and setting it with undervolt flashed
Could someone please explain?
i flashed the stock kernel first but there was no option to 128mhz also i believe uv works without app...you can also flash the custom kernel and choose the least frQ as i did. i also have enlightment but don't know is that from overclocking to 1113mhz or from the minimum 128mhz or from the undervolt itself??

I think overclock/underclock is different from undervolt, no?
Hi,
underclock = reduce frequency = gain life
overclock = increase frequency = loose life = gain speed
undervoltage = reduce voltage for certain frequencies = gain life
With good settings for undervoltage and underclocking you can gain a lot of extra batterie life.

Under and overclocking changes the speed at which the cpu works.
Less speed means it doesnt work as hard so saves battery.
More speed means it works harder so needs more power so reduces battery life.
At the different speeds the cpu works at it uses different voltages from the battery, less speed needs less voltage, as the speed increases it pulls more volts from the battery.
The voltages it uses are controlled by the kernel.
The undervolt module changes the default voltages each speed uses so in effect a higher cpu speed can work at a lower voltage so it improves performance at no cost to the battery life.
However, if the new voltages are too low the cpu doesnt have enough power to run so you WLOD.
The UV module (and custom kernels) have been tested on loads of devices and generally are stable, however, reading the threads suggest that some phones are still vulnerable to the occasional WLOD using these modules...
Just try and see what is stable for you...

Sir, i think you missunderstood the point of the topic.
The enlightenment which im talking about is learning the beyond the basics of undervolting you device and not a function of the addon

It seems to change from phone to phone because the chips inside are not all exactly the same.
They are tested to conform with stock speeds and voltages but can become unstable when changing these.
Some phones (Luckily mine included) can handle 128 - 1113 Mhz with ony a few (Very rare, about 2 a week) WLOD's while other people say their phones WLOD constantly with any change.
The best way is to apply the mod you want and check.
I seem to remember that the UV and the UC/OC modules are not compatble on WB's ROM, you have to choose what you want.
However, I am running freekernel 4.05 which allows me to use UV and then configure which speeds to run via SetCPU.apk.
If you install a kernel there is no need to apply the UV or OC/UC modules..
Read DooMLoRD's custom kernel thread, he has a lot of good info and useful tips on how to test which is best for your phone.
exactly, wolfbreak also mentioned in his thread about the incompatibility of overclock and undervolt with some devices.
unfortunately i'm at the short list of devices that can't handle both, for users like me he gave the option for stock kernel with optional undervolt, which i'm using now with no problems.

Just curious is most people who root/use custom ROMs overclock, and if so, what settings do you typically use in SetCPU?
I'm using a S2, rooted with latest Unnamed ROM and find myself contemplating if I should make any changes with SetCPU. Lots of options, and Unnamed has all the different governor options, etc. just really looking for some best practices that people who overclock often.
Would appreciate seeing what you consider to be stable overclock options that give a good boost without causing excessive heat/stability issues.
I'm coming at SetCPU with limited experience so I do appreciate any tips that might see rudimentary, or if there are better resources that teach about this I'd appreciate any links as would like to get a better technical understanding of all this. Thanks in advance.
I use No Frills CPU, and I just set it to 1.6 max/ondemand. Absolutely no heat issues or stability issues, so I just stuck with it. Battery life is good.
most maybe but only by a little bit. a good number of people underclock and undervolt their devices to try and get better battery life. to be honest, the newer phones dont need overclocking to handle the current apps and stuff. the older phones like the nexus one and older need overclocking tho. i leave my gs2 stock. what we really need is dual core support before OC becomes worth it on my phone. ymmv
I have never overclocked mine, phone runs smooth as butter at 1.2 so I don't see the need to go farther. Plus I like my battery lasting more than 24 hours...
I overclock my s2. im running unamed 1.3.0. I like run different speeds at different at different battery percents. 1.6 till 75% 1.4 till 50% 1.2 till 25% 1000 till 15% 800mhz till dead. i had some problems with 1.4 ghz but i tweeked the voltage and that did solved my problem. I'm at 50% battery with normal usage. display 1hr 25mn phone calls for 47min and android os for 56min. my phone doesn't get any hotter then it did before i overclocked. I just did it to say i did. It will prolly help a little unless you like emulators then it will help alot. i have to overclock my iconia a500 to 1.6 if i want to play n64 games.
I'm on UnNamed 1.3.1 with the latest entropy dd kernel and am very happy with the stock CPU speed

Undervolting-nooby

Im running CM7 and just flashed "1.4 newoc 240-325-300 for cm7" and have read about undervolting, apparently it saves battery? What kind of settings is everyone running without having the phone lock up or anything with this kernel? Is there any really noticeable battery savings from undervolting? Im a complete noob when it comes to overclocking and undervolting. Would undervolting possibly damage the hardware over time? Any insight on undervolting and overclocking would be greatly appreciated. Can you provide a noob friendly walk through on how to undervolt and the pros/cons? Thanks a bunch
Edit: I see in setcpu it has differnt mV ratings depenting on the Mhz that the processor is running, can someone run me through whats a "safe" level to bring them all down to? Like at 216 Mhz its autoset to 750 mV and at 1000 Mhz its set to 1000 mV and 1400 Mhz its at 1300 mV. Also, i cant adjust the scaling, should i be using a different kernel? If so can you provide a specific one? And does scaling have a large affect?
I have the same issue with not having the scaling option. I don't really care as set CPU still does what it is supposed to.
I am using cm7 with jokers 1.3kernel uvolted -75mv across the board. I have had no issues what so ever. I did experience less battery life but I attribute that to constantly messing with my phone since rom-ing and using jokers kernel. I did learn to shut off wifi when not using it. That itself helped tremendously.
There should be no hardware damage from undervolting (only stability issues). Its overvolting is what you should be worried about and iirc those are set by the kernel dev during configuration/compiling. I don't think any dev is going to push the voltage envelope and risk hard bricking his/her device and many other users devices.

hey guys i install custom karnel on my xpera mini...now i can overclock up to 2 ghz..i just wanted to know pros and cons of overclocking..
pros- increased speed and less lagging,
cons- short battery time, increased temprature.
Is it possible to underclock it to get more battery or shelf life from the phone?
we can overclock and underclock if we install custom karnel..

Yeah. Root your phone, and install SetCpu, and you can Underclock freely and thus save lots of battery

Overclock will give you temporary boosts and lets you to showoff, and to get super high benchmark scores , but its not for regular use
Overclocking reduces battery performance and increases heating of device, which might cause your device to get unstable
and of course high temp = bad for the hardware so be careful
My SE mini works very well at 1610 Mhz.No crash,no instability but I use high frequency for max 2-3 hours or when I want to play without lagging

Battery life goes down fast

Phone might get bricked if the phone gets unstable (Happened to my friend)

Overclocking is not actually advisable because there are chances that it will affect your phone and might screw it up in the long run .
Battery drain is inevitable and you will experience it .
Phone will heat up
It may not be good for the other internal components because of the over heat-unlike computers a mobile is not actually equipped with much of cooling system.
There is a good reason why the manufacturer has set a clock speed ,otherwise isn't it better for them to just overclock a phone and sell it for a higher price ?
People who design the custom kernels are just telling the maximum possible value they could overclock to.

As in most things if you not overdo it you can enjoy the benefits of better performance without risking your phone.My xperia mini is running up to 1200 (1024 stock). Also minimum speed 122 instead of 245.So better performance when you need it and lower consumption when phone is sleeping.Overall i got the same battery life, 2-3 days as with stock rom.The best thing to do is get an app that lets you make profiles.Like when screen is off min cpu 122 - max cpu 384 etc...
I don't know about these new kernels you're talking about but cpu throttling is something stock kernels do also (if by cpu throttling you mean cpu speed adjustment)
