Hi,
I flashed the new Build of CM9, i thought it was a normal ROM that you would flash like a another ROM, but then someone told me that i had to flash something called Gapps + fix, but since i can't access to market, or paste files to my phone i can't do so much.
I want to go back to my old rom (checkrom), but i didn't do any backup and i don't have the rom in my phone (i removed it). Please how can i solve this problem?
thanks
Never tried CM9, but if you haven't backed up and "removed" your previous ROM, you've lost all your data/settings.
Factory reset and clean install of checkrom seems to be your only option - please correct me if I'm wrong, CM9 people.
Advice - Never ever ever ever flash a new ROM without a backup - asking for trouble.
what happens when you put your phone in download mode and connect it to your pc with odin?

Please understand. When you're installing CM9, you cant access your phones memory, because you'll need a program from market, or you need to put a apk in your phone. But since i forgott to install Gapps together with this rom, now i don't have market, and i can't access my memory = This mean, i can't install my new rom.
So i need to know if there's another way to fix the mtp problem or what's called so i can put files to my phone.
thanks

I havn't tried that yet, but that should work. Do you mean i should install stock ROM from there, and then root phone again?
there is something called SDK, its for debugging and you can push apps on your phone with this!
Not sure how it works though, you should check out some guides first
You should still be able to boot into download mode and use Odin to flash a stock ROM.
Put your SGII into download mode by pressing the volume down button, the home button and the power button at once.

Thanks, yes i know that, but i wanted to use this option as last way out, maybe there's a way to access memory anyway.
You can go to xda with your phone so you can download gapps

Answer - With difficulty becauseyou didn't do a backup
You didn't mention the mtp problem at all in your original post.
Doesn't matter which ROM you install, you should always do a backup, and I'm sure you know that..??
As said, if you don't do a backup, you're asking for problems. You didn't backup, you've got problems. Live and learn.
Lykke til.
This really is not that complicated, ..
Download the app "Android Commander" ... google it ...
Install it ...
Make sure debugging is on, on your phone ...
Run android commander , you now have a windows file manager that you can use to dump files to , or even double click to install apps to your phone ....
you cant just go back to checkrom from cm9.
you have to flash a stock rom via odin and root it again or flash prerooted via odin. then you can install new rom zips with cwm.
as far as i know you cant even use a normal backup when cyanogen is flashed. tried it on galaxy s when i started flashing, but it just doesnt work.
when going back from cyanogen you always have to flash stock with odin.

1. Flash a stock rom with Odin. 2. Start again with your flashing.
It's really basic knowlodge.

Hi guys,
I used this method to root my phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Everything seems to work fine, and i just installed my first rom (ginger mod), i would like to ask you:
1. Every time i install a new rom, i'll do a wipe for secerity reasons, but by doing this, how come everything i had on the phone doesn't dissapear, like pictures? Doesn't wipe mean factory reset = remove everything on the phone?
2. Every time i install a new rom, does the older one get removed automatic or do they stay left on the phone, if so how do i remove the old stuff?
3. I know this may sound stupid, but do i have the same root every time i install new rom? Because i noticed when i install new rom and i went i to recovery mode i see new color on the Meny, that's normal?
4. Which app is good for beginners to start with, like Rom's and doing backup, which of these should i purchase: titanium backup, rom manager P, rom toolbox P.
thanks guys,
1. Internal SD card data remains. Can't tell you why it just does.
2. Old Rom is replaced. No need to remove it.
3. Each Rom has its own kernel. That kernel may or may not be rooted.
4. Titanium backup. Also do backup via CWM.

Thank you for the quic answers,
1. when you're talking about the CWN, do you mean the one in the Rom manager?
2. So each rome, has their own root theme if i understood this correctly, so i don't need to worrie about re-rooting the device or something like that, because each rom has their own theme and meny?
3. which rom do you use and why, do you think that ginger-mod is good?
thanks again.

CWM not rom manager CWM is the modified recovery menu or CWM app .

No not all custom roms are rooted

One you did a backup with your ClockWorkMod recovery, you can experiment as much as you wish. You can go with various TouchWiz-based roms. You can try CyanogenMod or MIUI, which are completely different. And if you don't like them, just restore the backup.

1.Ok guys, i soon understand everything. I never did a backup on any roms. Here's the deal. When i first rooted the device, i used this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
2.I also got the CWM app with this root, and superuser( which i dont know what this do), but now when i installed Ginger-mod, suddenly i don't have the CWM app anymore, which i guess is normal?
3.So please can you explain this for me. Lets say i have ginger-mod now, but i decide i want to install CM7 now, but before i do this, i'll have to do a backup of the ginger-mod if something goes wrong with the CM7, am i right so far?
So i'll have to install this CWM app (where i find it?) and make a backup, and then try a new rom. But if i make a wipe before installing new rom, wont the CWM app dissapear or something like that? Or if i install new rom again, will the CWM app be gone again?
I know my English grammer isn't that great, but i'll hope you understood me anyway.
thanks again

The CWM app is a manager for the ClockWorkMod-recovery. The ClockWorkMod-recovery is a replacement for the stock Android-recovery. You enter the recovery by shutting your device down, holding volume-up and home and then pressing the power-button until you see the galaxy s2 logo. The CWM-app does not give you root-rights, in fact, it requires root-rights to work properly.
The SuperUser app gives you the root-rights. On OS' like Linux (and of course Android) there is one user called "root" (or superuser). He is basically what the Administrator was for Windows before Vista, having full access to everything.
The superuser-app manages what apps get root-permissions. You'll notice when it happens, because whenever an app wants to gain root-permissions, you'll see the superuser-app popping up and asking you if this is OK.
The fact that you don't have the CWM-App is no problem, as it just manages the recovery. The recovery itself does not need additional apps to be installed.

Enter the cwm-recovery (already said how you do this). You'll find various menus. One of them is the "Backup and Restore"-menu. You'll just create a backup to your internal or external sdcard (as you wish). When it is completed (without errors), you can safely flash any other rom. If you want to come back, you just enter cwm again and restore the backup.
You don't have to create a backup, but it's always good to have one of a working system.

As I already said, you don't need the app. If your kernel does not provide it (it's just not there from the start), live with it. Everything you do in this app will just start the cwm-recovery anyway.
The ClockWorkMod-recovery is the "standard" for custom-roms. You can be sure that, if you flash another rom, it will have it too. And if your Rom does not come with CWM (like a stock-rom), you can just flash a kernel with cwm again (like Siyah).
Hope this clears things up for you. If you have any more questions (even if you think they're stupid) ask us here. It's better to ask twice, than to break something.

thank you, you explained everything perfect. I think i can manage figure out the rest by my self. Just one last question:
I noticed to good programs, and where you also could do a backup for your rom's and much more:
# Rom manager (Premium)
# Root toolbox (Pro)
Which one of these would you suggest for a beginner friendly UI and settings, do you use one of these?
thanks, and happy new year.
You don't need them. The ROM-manager is just an app like the cwm-app. It handles your ClockWorkMod-recovery. It does nothing itself. Once you click create backup, your phone will reboot into the ClockWorkMod-recovery, which will do the job.
However for the ROM-manager to work, you need to install the ClockWorkMod-recovery that shops with it. Just stick with the version of your kernel. This avoids confusion.
Besides that the ClockWorkMod-recovery is beginner-friendly. Just don't touch any options, you don't know what they do.
I recommend you to get a kernel with the latest recovery. The Siyah-kernel. It is compatible to practically every ROM out there. Just reflash the kernel after you flash a ROM.

You have been veryhelpful, i've learned a few things now thanks to you. Just some last questions then i'm fine.
1. I've downloaded Siyahkernal from his website http://www.gokhanmoral.com/ and as you see, i can choose between TAR, and Zip (download), which one of them is it that i put under the PDA in Odin? Or it doesn't matter which i download?
2. So after every Rom install i make, i install Siyah-kernal, let's say i installed Ginger-Mod, and this mod has Darkknight kernal, and now i install Siyah, will Siyah replace the other kernal, or will those 2 stick with eachother?
3. Just so i don't make any misstakes, installing kernal, is like installing root for the first time right? Meaning = 1, Put phone into download mode. 2.Put the kernal file in PDA 3. Press start?
4. I've noticed that there's a new version av Siyah 2.6.4, is this stable, and have he released it for download yet, because i couldn't find it?
Thanks for every answer you giving me. I feel much safer allready =).

REPLACE

YES

No idea read the siyah thread .
No point asking is anything stable its development forum and as 2.6.3 was only released two days ago i guess not .
Stable = stock .
Once you start you have to be prepared for problems though 90% do not have a problem some do .
Rooting or Custom rom voids warranty .

I started to notice another problem.
Sometimes CWM wont recognize my external SD, example: I have put kernal, and roms in it, and when i want to flash these, i only get "no files found". And sometimes it work, but often it wont.
What can i do about this?
Sometimes cwm mistakes the internal for the external. Just take the other option.
Besides that, better update to Siyah 2.6.4. The ClockWorkMod there is more reliable.

I haven't downloaded anything recently, I literally just picked up my phone after I woke up and I got a message saying "the application tasks provider has stopped working unexpectedly" and it gives me the option to force close. When I close it, a similar message pops up for email, messaging, social hub, tw launcher, facebook and it keeps going on and on without giving me a chance to use the phone. Do you guys know what I can do? I would be extremely grateful if you could help me out.
Bwahahahaa ;-) Gold.
Yes i've tried that. I've take the battery pack, memory card and sim card out, then replaced them but the loop keeps occuring. It's gotta be more of a software issue and that's why I need your help.
You haven't told us anything whatsoever about your setup/rom/kernel/etc. We're not mind readers
Try a factory reset in the first instance.
If you're running anything other than stock firmware, go back to stock firmware.
i recomendeed to change your rom..
i think that is a crush from your system, mate..
About 4 months ago I had exactly the same problem.
Is there Debugging-Mode enabled in you're phone?
Is you're phone rooted?
Try to take out only the SIM Card and then connect it to you're PC. Then turn the S2 on and try to backup all you're data.
If you're phone is rooted, try to boot up in CWM Recovery Mode and go to "advanced" and then "Fix Permissions". It shuold solve you're problem.
If you're phone isn't rooted, then you have to flash a stock or custom ROM.

Sorry about my lack of knowledge guys, but I wholeheartedly appreciate you taking the time out to give me a hand.
1. Try wiping all data (fixed when i had the problem)
1. U need a kernel with CWM recovery (recommend siyah kernel)
2. Install with odin look on these forums for odin dont remember link
3. go to recovery (vol up+home button+power) and wipe data/cache (wipes everything apps, passwords, etc)
4. Try now if works click the thanks button

No problem man
Okay...when you have root permissions on youre phone you can write in system files and do other administrative work.
You can root youre phone by flashing a rooted kernel. The kernel is something like the heart of youre Android OS. You have to know some facts about youre S2, to root it successfully.
You have to know which Kernel version is installed at the moment. This information you can find in Settings -> About Phone -> Kernel Version (or something like that...my S2 is in German ). But when youre phone is bricked or youre system is damaged, its really hard or impossible to find out the kernel version. I think you won't be able to root it successfully :-(
So the only one possibillity to rescue youre S2 is, to flash a new firmware.
Hello,
I am unable to post in the Developement threads at the moment due to the post limit but thought I would ask here and hopefully someone can help me.
Firstly, I have a Locked BootLoader that cannot be unlocked, I have rooted my XS and it is running ICS, I pretty much have it the way I want it but would like to try the MIUI ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768057 which works for all BootLoaders.
Secondly, I need to know if I will lose Root access by flashing the above ROM and also if I will lose all my personal Data. I have CWM installed and have backed up everything it will alow me to back up. But I am just concerned about losing root access and personal data.
For those of you who have flashed the ROM, can you tell me if root access is removed and if personal data is also wiped?
Thank you in advance and I appreciate all answers.
Personal data like pics, music and movie will not be lost if they are on the ext sd card.
Root should stay, but all apps that you install will be wiped so you need to download again from play store and make a backup for contacts and sms.

Would backing up via CWM not be advisable, just backup using the Sony PC Companion or the Backup and Restore utility on the phone itself, should I just use them all to be sure?
Thank you for the reply, much appreciated.
Allow me to add, all Media files are on the additional storage of the phone, the 32gb, I am just worried about SMS, Contacts and so on.
Also, with the above mentioned ROM, are there any limitations as to what apps would run, for instance, ICS compatible apps I previously purchased should have no issue?
Forgive my ignorance, I am not so familiar with Android.

Any chance you could point me in the right direction?
I originally used the method outlined by Sharaz22 to root my XS, downgrading to GB and flashing several things, but that is the only thing I have read on the subject of rooting a locked bootloader and to get it up to ICS rooted, I have not read about any special method for MIUI to maintain root access, even in the thread I linked above I could not see a work around, unless I am going blind.
Again, thank you and your help is appreciated.

Okay, this is making sense to me now, so I just need to place the files into the suggested directory and reboot into CWM and flash MIUI throught there. Obviously following the instructions in the original thread and all should be fine, root access will not be lost and I can restore backed up content such as SMS and contacts without any fuss?
Thanks guys, that is great. :good:

I lost both when I flashed MIUI. I still had root, but not CWM. For locked bootloaders, the CWM is installed in the /system partition. When you flash MIUI, all of the files in that partition are changed, so you lose it. You can either reflash CWM like you did the first time or you can use this method (I forgot I had the link): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1787532

Sorry GM, one final question.
What is the difference between the one you linked and the one in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1793432
I notice Sharaz22 states he removed the Kernel so it would work with the stock Kernel, now I have the stock Kernel since I installed a stock ICS so what problems would I face if I went with the official one and not the one Sharaz22 "edited"?

Nope. Flash ROM with CWM, wipe what you have to wipe, and before rebooting, flash the CWM package (no need for the Superuser one)
Guys, I suffered some mishap yesterday trying to flash MIUI on my phone.
After the flashing process with CWM, the phone would not boot, no response other than a single flash of the green LED and a vibration, it would not boot and i tried for over an hour. In the end I had to use Flashtools and get ICS back on the phone.
Since that, I cannot root my phone again, I have tried and tried, the first time I did it, it was easy and straight forward, downgrading to GB and using the batch files and so on, but now, each and every time I try to do it and follow the guides, of which I have found two, it does not work. That is because the process states that the "Device is not detected" and it cannot locate anything related to ADB. I have checked the drivers, installed several, reinstalled flashtools and each time I go through the guide I am left with an unrooted phone and nothing seems to work. Even in flashtools it struggles to flash the ROM every now and then and the phone just seems to randomly disconnect even though it remains plugged in.
Any help, I am struggling to get anything done on this phone and I would rather just have Root and CWM than MIUI.

I tried that also, but it did not work. Maybe I missed a step or did not read correctly, but I will give it another go in a bit and see if it works.

To all of you, thank you, I f***ing love you guys!
I managed to get Root and CWM back on with ICS and Flashed MIUI, I was disappointed by MIUI and thankfully I had created a CWM backup a day earlier of my phone the way I wanted it, so I restored that and have everything I was missing and back how the phone was before I started messing around with MIUI.
Thank you all so much for your help, you guys are a great benefit to this community, thanks!

---------------- ONLY FOR GALAXY PLAYER 5.0 USA------------
For those who are new to the threads and looking to replace gingerbread for a newer version there is a good solution that has very few bugs, and that can be stable for everyday use. CAUTION THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY. DO A STOCK ROM INSTALL TO GET IT BACK
Lets get started. Were going to be upgrading to Jell bean 4.2.
You need to make sure you install the clock work mod (CWM) on you stock gingerbread rom. To do this you need Odin and a stock rom with CWM. You can find the stock rom here .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1863004
Next we flash it with Odin. Please search and read up on using Odin. Download Odin, start Odin. Before you connect your player make sure it is off. Then hold the down button and hold the power button. You should go into download mode. Now connect the player to your computer. Odin will recognize it.
Once it has Flashed your player you now have CWM.
Go get a 4.2 rom for galaxy player 5.0 ----- For the time being, Slim Bean 4.2 is Recommended ---------
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2298872
Once you have your rom, you need a kernel. This kernel is the lastest. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2466434
If you want google apps and store they can be found here. Under Gapps Core. 4.2.2
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/kifcelekch235kz/wOT7RHcO4m
You have you Rom and Kernel and Gapps now, put them onto an SD card.
Hold down the UP button and Hold the Power button. You should go into a recovery menu (CWM)
---- Do factory reset/ wipe data.
----- Do Wipe Cache.
----- Go to advanced and wipe delvik cache.
INSTALL
Go to install from SD Card or Install ZIP
Find Your rom Zip and Install it.
Find Gapps Zip and install it.
Find the kernel Zip and install it.
Reboot and Enjoy the upgrade.

That is correct, just be sure if you reflash back to a stock rom that if its rooted you unroot it before sending it in. I would write down the build version so when you look for a stock rom again its the right one for your version. Theres USA, International, and a few others. Each stock rom has a build version. For USA its G70UEKI8.
More stock versions can be found on the link below

Would Odin version 3.09 be the best to use? I'm a little murky about the CWM part of the process. One last question. Once done I can buy/download anything from Google Play and run it?

I imagine version 3.09 would work, I haven't used Odin in awhile now. Once you put the player into download mode and connect it to your PC Odin will reconize it and one of the small windows will turn yellow. You select PDA, and locate the .tar file of the CWM stock rom. DO NOT CHECK REPARTITON OPTION. And hit start, it should go through loading the rom and turn green saying pass when finished.
After you have installed everything you can make purchases while the Play store. Log in with your google account works fine. And you can run any app you choose like the normal stock rom.

mrshane88,
Okay I did the CWM on my SGP.
Now I need to wait for my SD card or can I go to 4.2 without?
Also I have the following files.
Slim-venturi_usa-4.2.2.build.7.5-UNOFFICIAL-20130727-0459
Slim_Gapps.4.2.2.build.8
Sultan-kernel-Venturi-r6b2-US
GApps Core 4.2.2
I need to install all of those? Any particular order?
Thanks!

You put all those files on your SD card and in CWM select install zip from SD card.
The order goes
1. Slim-venturi_usa-4.2.2.build.7.5-UNOFFICIAL-20130727-0459
2. Slim_Gapps.4.2.2.build.8
3. GApps Core 4.2.2
4. Sultan-kernel-Venturi-r6b2-US
Before you do this you should do a factory wipe, and cache wipe. A delvik wipe is also good, its located in the advanced section in CWM.
I recently found out that if you don't first install CM9 your external and internal SD cards can get mixed up. This really dosent bother me but if it will bother you then look into first installing the CM9 rom, then moving to Slim bean.
Okay I did the update to 4.2.2. Problem, I see no google apps or google play market. It asks me if I want to import or restore some Nova backup..

Is there a way to get rid of "Import from another Launcher" and "Restore previous Nova Backup"?
Another couple questions, hopefully not too many more. After upgrade I no longer see FM radio. I see its supposed to have Spirit FM but I don't see it. Also if I decided to go back to stock do I just go into developer mode and restore 2.3.5 through Odin?

I don't understand this, if you use nova, then having this option is normal I don't think you can remove it.

Spirit isn't included, you're supposed to find it out in the forums by installing it's apk or buying the unlocked version on the play store.

Seems like you need to install a new rom on your phone. Do you have a custom recovery? If yes, what recovery do you have?
I can give you a new rom and instructions on how to install it, but you will need CWM or TWRP for that.
Cheers,
Kuba P.

You need to do some research before you make things worse. You will have to have a pc. Then it is a simple matter of flashing the device which will wipe it completely.

Watch these YouTube video. You get flashing procedure in SP flash tool and download link of stock rom in video description.
You need SP flash tool to flash your android.
Download from here
Sorry for saying this , but you should be aware that Rooting a device has its own ups and down/
You should have researched more and must have had a custom recovery incase things go awry.
Now that things have gone bad , the only option you have is flash a rom for your device using SP Flash Tool.
Google for your phone model and download firmware and flash the rom
If you have any trouble finding a rom or flashing it , please feel to contact me.

Make sure you have driver for your device installed properly.
Guys Thanks a lot. I have successfully flashed my phone with SP tools. It has been a great experience for me as I did it for the first time even I was really excited. I really knew it that u guys help will really work. Thanks once again and love u all. Now I wont dare to flash my phone with custom rom well I will install CMW first haha
lesson learned.
