Guys,
I'm sorry. I'm not sure if I'm re-posting a topic which has already been answered but couldn't quite find a similar match.
I'm a newbie to the Android world and have just managed to get my hands on Streak 5.
There are few things which I would like this community to help me with
1. What is the difference between upgrading and rooting?
2. Does these two (Rooting and Upgrading) have any inter-dependencies; example - One cannot be completed without the other?
3. I'd like to upgrade/update to Gingerstreak. For a newbie like me, what are the steps of upgrading?
Any help will be highly appreciated.
Cheers
Nick
Rooting
Changing/Upgrading ROM
You DON'T need root to upgrade the ROM on the Streak.
Id recommend trying dsc rom first, gingerstreak has been quiet for a while (development wise) dsc is being worked on everyday and constantly being updated , also in my experience gingerstreak was no good for me and others due to random reboots etc, but its upto you, have fun! Happy streaking!!

1. upgrading is like windows xp to windows7, for android its from version 2.1 > 2.2 > 2.3 and rooting is you got access to locked system files, which could be harm to your device if you don't know what are you doing.
2. no both are different.
3. there are so many guides but i recommend you to google yourself for desired result / process, otherwise you may brick the phone.

Ok guys so ive just bought a uk orange branded hero, and i dont have a clue about android or linux for that matter, so i hope you guys could answer a few questions for me, ive looked at the stickys in the android development section, and now im more confused than before lol
1) What is rooting? and what is the process ment to achieve?
2) like i said i have a uk orange branded hero, now what is the process i need to do before i can start flashing roms? it seems a little more complicated that just flashing hspl like am used to lol
root is the system administrator of a unix system. you might wanna google that if you don't know what it is.
depending on your fastboot version you need to flash the custom recovery image, from there on it is a piece of cake. if you don't need to downgrade your system then flashing the custom recovery is also a piece of cake.

My intention is to give balanced advice to all those who intend to modify their new Android.
Ask yourselves, what do you intend to do with root access, if you want your phone to do all simple tasks, no need to root. I would say get familiar with new OS before deciding "Root Way."

Rooting is the process of gaining full system access to your device. This has pros and cons (you can modify anything and really tweak the guts of your system...but you can also truely fubar the whole thing a lot easier too). If you don't have a need to root, I generally advise against it.
Flashing custom ROMs are an unsupported method of customization...but it, like rooting, has some potential gains. Some ROMS give more speed, some ROMs include more features that you may or may not want. Flashing ROMs are the reasons most people root (as to flash the ROM, you need root access)
Thanx for all your help guys, i read all that info and spent the last 2 days learning lol 2day i sucsessfully downgraded my rom, routed and flashed modaco 2.9
Goodlad!
Excellent. Now please tell our forum members which road you drove to get to root, so that someone with same enthusiam can also do same. You dont have to write whole page, just majot points and references or links.
Thanks.
I know that many of these questions are already answered but i couldn't understand how to do it so here it goes.
I know how to install custom roms/radios/mods etc on HD2 but only on WinMO.
I saw on a friends HD2 android software and i really loved it.
I have a custom rom on my hd2 (omega v14.4/radio 2.10.50.28_2) and i need your help to install ANDROID on it.
Is there a dual bootloader or a specific procedure to run android?
I have to format the phone and install only android on it or there are both on the phone?
Which is the best ROM so far for it?
Battery consumption/signal/gps etc remain functionable like in WinMO?
Thanks for your help! Waiting for your answers!
read the posts and you will find your answers, installing android is simple enough just copy over the android folder to the sd card, all this is covered in the stickies and many other posts in the android area
Thanks for the reply.
You know... it's my first time and i dont want to brick my phone
Could you point out to me a good stable rom? Are the android roms for everyday use or still in pure development?
Thanks. I managed to do it. A few things dont work though but it's very nice and fast!
Hey guys,
I came across this thread in the android devolepment section and was quite interested at the prospect of running ubuntu on my phone. Although, I am a massive noob so i was wondering, once you follow the instructions on the thread and u are using ubuntu:
1. Can you use ur phone to call people?
2. If you're done with ubuntu do you just close it or how do you stop using it and go back to your normal phone OS?
3. What is the risk involved (if any) with running ubuntu?
I appreciate any input u guys have,
Thanks in advance!

1. Yes, Its a phone........
2. Ubuntu Phone OS takes over android, sort of like dual boot or just ubuntu OS no android
3. why is there risk?
also Nexus users will be able to get Ubuntu Phone OS in 1-3 weeks (17 January 2013)
http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/phone
First thing you need to do is ask yourself (especially so given by your own admission you're a 'massive n00b'), why do you want to run Ubuntu ?
If the answer is something vague like 'cos it would be cool', don't do it. If you don't have any previous experience with Linux on PC, don't do it.
In other words, unless you have a specific reason for doing it, don't. The instructions on how to install it/get it up & running are very clear/concise for those who have a reason/know what they're doing.
If they're not to you, best you keep enjoying using your phone as it is now.

Why can't you just use droidstyles guide on here. I don't think you need anyone to walk you through it step by step when he has already done that .

and dont forget to look at jawmans noob glossary aswell.
Are you rooted?
@droidstyle i saw your post. so neat. i was about to try it, but im not sure which one should i do first, since your instruction is like for those who have 2.2 or froyo, i only have 2.1(eclair), i want to get atleast froyo for now, or maybe ginger bread but i dont know which one should i use first?
i saw your psot in this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238070
please response..
You can use any of sections 1,2,3, or 4 as it doesn't matter what you start with but rather what you want to end up with. For example, if you want to end up on Ice Cream Sandwich (newest OS) use section4. If you want EH03 Touchwiz Gingerbread (last version officially release by Samsung) then use section 2.
Again, use the section that says the ROM you want your phone to run. They aren't meant to be followed in sequence. Just choose the section that names the ROM you want to end up on.
Follow the steps word for word. I have a feeling English may be your second language, though you do speak it very well. This guide puts the steps in very simple terms. If you don't understand you probably should seek a guide in your native language or someone who can translate for you.
Best of luck.
step 5 actually worked fine, i tried the froyo 1. thanks droidstyle
i actually want to ask some follow up question..
Does android phone have adobe flash player, cant find it in store, but it is a required file to run some applications.
Also i want to ask your honest opinion guys, which among this software should i use? which is stable have long battery life and good for games. as of right now im using the froyo that can be found in Section 5.
Last question, is there a way to download apps, for free instead, i mean full version for free, cause i tried using my CC and it's not working wonder why.. its always declined.
Thanks so much anyway for all the answers i got from you guys. appreciate it so much.. kindly answer my other questions please Thankyou so much
-- Also i want to ask, cause i really can't understand the advantage of having the phone rooted or what. kindly please tell me the advantage please if you have time.. appreciate it so much!!! rock on!!

You should create a nandroid backup as soon as you finish a good enough config as a base line to return to.

Try to google for "blackmart", it'll let you install anything even things which should never be installed hence the need for nandroid backup.

A rooted phone let you have more options to decide what you want to do to your phone. For example Droidwall only works on rooted phone, the firewall will let you block all apps which wanted net access for ads which nearly all of them do and bogged down your data bandwidth if too many of them were installed.
