Let ASUS Feel Our Wrath - Operation BBB - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I submitted a complaint to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) yesterday, BBB approved it and sent it to ASUS.
We should all complain to the BBB. That'll really show ASUS there's a problem and if they don't deal with it, the BBB will do them in nicely, no lube, just like ASUS did with us.
https://www.bbb.org/greater-san-francisco/complaint/new/16870
File a complaint. It'll take 2 minutes of your life, but these 2 minutes will have a bigger result than the last 3 hours you spent in here looking for threads that would solve whichever of the 50 problems you may have with your Prime.
P.S. There's a debate on whether or not it's getting discontinued and I remember Asus stating that the tf700 will be the "big brother" to our tf201 as an upgraded higher end model. But I don't believe a single word they say any more.
Why? Because I also remember Asus reassuring us that the rumor of the Wifi being screwed up and release date getting pushed back was false and everything was fine.
I also remember Asus stating we're getting ICS on the 12th, but came out on the 9th. If you didn't realize, it was to appease tf201 owners because of the kick in the balls we got from the announcement of the tf700.
And since we've all had problems, Asus has not said A SINGLE word. What does that say about the company?

really? for what the camera issue? how about wifi/gps problems, serial unknown, screen scrambling with horizontal lines, random reboots?
i personally have all of these problems, I've not encountered any fixes or "sentences" coming from asus about these.

Agreed this is a mess I have never seen a product be such a crapshoot for what problem you might have. Anyone buying one of these has several things to worry about when buying one and who wants to have to feel extremely lucky to get what you paid for? not me

All processors are not created equal. The ics update bumped the processor speed from 1.4 Max to 1.6 max. Your unit probably has a processor that couldn't handle the bump. Yours is probably the 1 out of 100 cores that can't handle over clocking well. The lines on the screen sound like a processor issue. Best thing to do is to contact asus with the issue and ask for a replacement or Exchange from the store u bought it from.
I have had 0 issues with mine so I'll send in positive review since i have had a great experience.

Thank you very much for all of the support you have given to ASUS. Eee Pad Transformer Prime received excellent reviews and great demand when it launched in December 2011. Now, we are continuing to make the Transformer Prime available in the worldwide market, and doing our best to fulfill the incredible demand. ASUS strives to create the best products and provide the best service for our customers, and will be releasing an FOTA update for the Transformer Prime shortly. This update, version 8.8.3.33, will improve the focus of the camera, the fluidity of the touch experience, and the APK capabilities in Android Market.
ASUS has been working hard to make the highly anticipated Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich available on the Transformer Prime, and today, we have good news for you. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich FOTA worldwide update for the Transformer Prime will start from Jan 12th, 2012. Thank you for your patience and support through this process.
In addition, we would like to address your concerns related to GPS and bootloader on the Transformer Prime.
The ASUS Transformer Prime is made from a metallic unibody design, so the material may affect the performance of the GPS when receiving signals from satellites. Please note that this product is not a professional GPS device, and signal performance can be easily influenced by factors including, but not limited to: weather, buildings, and surrounding environments. Please understand there are limitations when using the GPS function. To avoid inconveniencing users who demand a powerful GPS device, we made the decision to remove it from our specification sheet and marketing communications. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.
Regarding the bootloader, the reason we chose to lock it is due to content providers' requirement for DRM client devices to be as secure as possible. ASUS supports Google DRM in order to provide users with a high quality video rental experience. Also, based on our experience, users who choose to root their devices risk breaking the system completely. However, we know there is demand in the modding community to have an unlocked bootloader. Therefore, ASUS is developing an unlock tool for that community. Please do note that if you choose to unlock your device, the ASUS warranty will be void, and Google video rental will also be unavailable because the device will be no longer protected by security mechanism.
Thank you for all the understanding and support for the ASUS Transformer Prime. Happy New Year!

where did u get that i have ics? why would they have a release for our primes, if some of them cant handle a standard update of a slight overclock?
my friend, if i pay 500 for a product, i want it to be equal to urs and everybody elses. not be worth $249, and urs is $449, and that guys is 500, and the other guys is 323.
i dont have ics, as my unit was not created equal, i have an unknown serial number, which they havent spoken a word about, leaving me to 0 ota updates and having to manually update myself. Maybe if they thought of uploading a file to their support site for ICS (not a task that's very complicated), id be less upset, but that still wouldn't solve some major issues.
these guys ****ed up. that's the bottom line. Go read all the 100 threads about how they ****ed up if u can't understand that.
This is also a thread for people who feel they've ****ed up, not people who have perfect primes. So please don't spam it. Thanks.

These are issues from long ago. I'm talking about issues since early january. They haven't fixed **** and they've released a new prime to cover up for it. Don't talk if you're too thick can't read between the lines.

The CPU did not jump up to 1.6, it just shows it but does not run at it unless you use the tool created by viperboy. There is a few threads about this already.

1. The TF700 is the upmarket Prime unit. The TF201 is not discontinued and continues on.
2. The release date was always the week of 12/17 and was not pushed back. As for WiFi performance, we are investigating a firmware problem on several early boards right now.
3. ICS passed Google Certification earlier than expected so we pushed it live. First time I have heard a complaint about beating expectations.
4. We have been quite active on this forum and others. I know I have stated at least a few words on these subjects.

Devices weren't actually overclocked. I started that thread. It was actually confirmed the overclock speeds are dormant. If you get CPU spy (free) and look, you will see those higher overclocked are not actually used.
NOW IF YOU want a real overclock, go into Android developement section and check out ViperBoy latest creation, ViperConrol Mod. Which allows overclocking to 1.5 &1.6ghz speeds. That can be confirmed through CPU spy.

I am a firm believer in the BBB and use it myself to get company's to listen, so good for anyone that is having issues that can not get resolved, but please don't bring all of us into this as my Prime is perfect, I have had zero issues to date.

The BBB can't do anything to asus except ask them to resolve the issue with people that complain. They are a private company with no power over anyone.
edit: Asus doesn't even pay to be listed by the BBB.

Waaaa Waaaaa Waaaaa..... Exchange it and quit spamming!

Here's a website that may help get some results if there's enough people who will act:

I don't think you should be a "quiet voice" anymore. The more we know about it means there will be less rumors spreading for the most part. I would think since this was just released and it, for the time being, is your new flagship tablet, we would have more feedback from our real issues. If we see that you are being proactive, it would help some people sleep better at night lol. Being silent about everything is really not a foos thing with all of this drama unfolding. If the 700 model is an upgraded model, why dis they call it a "Prime", I would have created it another name like bumblebee or something. Naming it the samething seems to me like a replacement for this current one. So if you could be more proactive on the forums, FB, Twitter about everything, I think it would really help out a lot

Agreed. It'd also help if there was an update to how long we have to wait for a fix, or if there will be a fix, as some of us... if not all of us have a limited time to return this tablet if we are unhappy with it.
I don't want to return it because I like it's potential. But it's potential means nothing if it will not be fixed.

1. Then what is the reason for some stores "deactivating" it. (im not 100% saying its been discontinued, but i feel like it may be if theres going to be many problems on a good % of the models)
2. The release stayed the same, but there was a rumor about the wifi being bad and release date getting pushed back which Asus squashed saying the wifi is FINE and the release date will stay the same. As far as I can tell, the wifi is not FINE , and the release date was the 19th, but with a ton of backorders and delays (for more than a month in many cases).
3. It's not about ICS getting released early, it's just fishy it was released the same day the tf700 was announced. Seems like a cover-up. If you notice, a very good % of prime owners aren't too happy with a 3 weeks later announcement of something superior, when half the owners haven't even received their item yet.
4. I don't know how active you've been, but I haven't seen too much happen in over a week or two regarding fixes or updates (im not talking about firmware update 8.8.3.33 which solved a slight camera lag issue).

From my experience with newegg, a deactivated product could mean it's no longer available or they will no longer stock it or they have decided not to carry it. Amazon does the same thing when customer reviews are extemely low.

I imagine a high return rate would prompt this as well.

A question to first generation prime owners on xda....

In my opinion if you are here on xda you have general knowledge about android, rooting, multiple devices and development in general. I also believe that you probably know the tech industry decently well and follow the lifeline of a multitude of devices including android..So i pose this question to all you brand new xda prime owners...
Why would you buy a first generation transformer prime when you know it will probably have major defects that will be corrected in the second generation? I find it ridiculous that you complain about all these problem like you didnt know there would be hiccups in both design and software. We all know that when a new device launches the chances of it being "perfect" are slim to none in the first generation. This is why we wait until the second generation so all the flaws of the first are corrected.
So why is it when ever a new device launches all you smart, educated and sensible xda members turn into ignorant, over-enthusiastic tech noobs that blow their money on a device they end up RMA'ing within the first week? Does all your experience with new devices just fly out the window when ever a new one is launched? I honestly would like to know because i really do not understand...
...just wondering
What an extremely interesting thread start!
I just want to thank you for this very interesting question and I hope it's plenty of them to come! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
[/irony]
There s a very simple answers to that.
We buy early product cause we love new stuff and are ready to pay the annoyance of returning 3 defective units just to be able to test those ourself.
Thoses issues have to be raised somewhere, by people that know what they re talking about: that's XDA.
Manufactures will also try to fix up known problems without thousands of rma send-ins. And "if" there would be a different model, i could imagine that they would completly remove the gps hardware - for example....
For me, the prime is a great step forward. I sold my TF101. Yes, its still far from beeing perfect, but thats just like the TF101 was at the beginning...

...while i see what your trying to say i dont agree. Im pretty sure on every thread i have read members here are not happy having to return defective units. Exactly my point! I own an original transformer and knew that the first generation would have problems. This is why i bought one after a couple months. Although i realy wanted one when it first came out i knew it was not smart. Sure enough, withing the first week i start hearing about power button issues, gps signals issues and keyboard dock issues.
Now dont get me wrong, the prime is amazing leap forward in tech and android. But my problem is not with the prime itself but with people buying the product literally the day its launched without allowing time for asus to fix any problems that come up.
I would expect people not really versed is android and tech, not members here on xda, to be early adopters and complaining about not getting simple functions like gps to work.
For me its a combination of awesome specs on paper, and the chance to get a unit that IS perfect (apparently there are some! )

Haha true the specs do look awesome, but from the reports im seeing no one has a unit that is completely free of the gps issue. This is a complete design flaw that is currently being corrected for the second generation.
Well, based on Asus history, there won't really be a 'second generation Prime'. Next generation prime will be their next Transformer, possibly released in second half of this year.
The only difference so far has been the very first Primes that were recalled due to WiFi antennae issues. That's the only change we'll see.
Of course I may be wrong, but it is very unlikely that Asus will redesign current Prime's to work better with GPS and have less screen issues. It just isn't what they have done in the past.
That is not completely true. I bought first generation of GTAB 7, GTAB 10.1 and Galaxy Note among many other things in the past. I dont recall any hardware defects. Maybe some firmware or software glitches. Companies do through tests, prototypes and final tests before releasing products. We know that in business sciences every few units in the production line ( the first and the last ones) tend to be defective due to human faults. Tiredness, lack of attention, etc... That is said, this is the first time a company as big as Asus released a product without noticing that metal can prevent GPS signals. That is a first time in the recent past.

Thats not true at all. Based on asus history they probably will have a second generation. Look at the original transformer. The dock was completely changed from the b50 models to the b60 to address the power drain issue ( could not be fixed with OTA update on models before). ALso to address the power button issue the design was tweaked in later models to avoid power button failures

Im not sure about the galaxys as i have not owned any but im sure there were defects on some of their units as well. Yes you were probably one of the lucky consumers to purchase a product first generation and not have an issue. But you yourself just awknowledged that flaws are seen at the beginning and end of production lines. SO why would you take the risk of buying a first generation when you know thats when you are most likely to get a defective unit? Thats my question...
Its kinda like when you meet a woman .... you would do almost anything to get in her knickers ... regardless of her defects and instabilities.
After time you notice the defects and they start to piss you off ... the initial buzz you got subsides a bit untill a new update / model comes out that sets you off again ...

No they won't. Google requires GPS.
I buy first generation anything, then I buy second generation, then third, etc etc. It's all about having the latest and greatest to me, and money is no object. Android, meet Pierre, because you clearly haven't met yet. Android doesn't have a "perfect" device. Perfect means old and antiquated. Apple makes perfect devices that are always technologically behind for the sake of "stability".
If you have watched the progression of Android you will know that they don't really make "second-generation" devices. It's always onward and upward with newer CPUs and GPUs and SoCs and FMLs .
"What we've got here is (a) failure to communicate". You are right that we on XDA are not the normal consumer. We are not who companies ::cough:Apple:cough::, excuse me, market their "perfect" devices to. In fact, for the sake of rooting/unlocking we rely on imperfections so the best among us can open our devices and let the games begin.
Technically, the Prime is a second generation device as it is the second of it's line. Following the original Transformer. TF201, meet your slower overweight older brother TF101. We love him just as much as you ::cough:bull****:cough::. As such I was certainly expecting this device to be exactly on par or better than the TF101 in every single regard. It is supposed to be better, faster, stronger and it fails in the better and the stronger. The biggest problem is that these problems should have been caught in the design phases.
I get the image of some incredulous electrical engineer looking around the table during R&D just waiting for someone to say "Hey ****tards, ALUMINUM BLOCKS RF FFS". I imagine this was a colossal blunder caused by group diffusion of responsibility allowed to go so far that ASUS had no way out. The initial supply issues were likely due to the real world tests showing the mistake. They decided to ship the device out and pray that they made enough money from people who didn't notice the problems. This seems unlikely in some regards, but I look at what happened. I pray that my limited understanding, I used to work as and electrician so I know more about light switches than chipsets, is wholly incorrect and they can fix this stuff in software. I don't suspect the bluetooth killing wifi can be attributed to bounce back from the aluminum rear panel but that doesn't rule it out.
Basically what has happened here is not the growing pains of bleeding edge technology. We are seeing a major fiasco that will go down in history. It will be listed in some book one day next to the iPhone Deathgrip.
EDIT: To be clear, I couldn't give two ****s about GPS. I use maps on the tablet to look things up when I have and idea where they are and need to manipulate the map, but I have my phone and a Garmin unit for navigation. The tablet is too big and beautiful to waste on GPS anyway. My problem is that I cant use it to play music on my car stereo via Google Music because the second I turn on bluetooth my WiFi tethered from my Galaxy Nexus fails within 2 minutes at the longest. This is while the Original transformer works in the same condition for hours. Unacceptable.

Asus / Gary Key Please Read Before Prime Return!!!

Ok I think I need to start off by saying how much I like the Prime, but I think Asus owes us some better answers then what they have been giving us. It has been over a month now and we still have very little answers for the problems we have with the Prime.
I am lucky enough that I have a 45 day return policy from Best Buy so I still have some time to return, but I would not return if I knew the Bluetooth / Wi-Fi issue could be fixed with a software update. I have no problems with the Wi-Fi signal strength, I only have the problem where the data transfer rate comes to a crawl when I am using Bluetooth headphones.
I know GPS is a lost cause and I am willing to live with that. At least Asus came out and said that they messed up and it can't be fixed.
If the fix for the bluetooth / Wi-Fi issue is to send it in for repair I want to know now so I can return my Prime before my time runs out. I bought one of the Original Transformers and between that and the dock sent it in 5 times for repair. On the first repair Gray Key even tried to help me out because the repair center tried to say I damaged the tablet. The Transformer tablet was never repaired right, but I figured I would give Asus another shot with this tablet. (Plus I needed an upgrade from the Transformer that was never right) So, you can see why I wouldn't want to have to send this tablet in for anything.
I must also say I am very grateful for Gary Key being on here, but I feel we have given Asus enough time now that we should have a better answer on some of this stuff and not just a generic statement like:
"We are finalizing a service side solution for the WiFi/BT dropout problem and hopefully it can be rolled out shortly."
or
"We are working on two different solutions now and hope to have a fix available in early February."
What is a service side solution? and what are these two different solutions?
Please bump this so it stays on the front page till we get a response from Asus or Gary Key!!!!!
Mods please close this thread. Gary already has stickied WiFi/BT thread, where he states they are working on solution and possible February update.
For starters rhisbis not that serious as for the need of your thread title. Second, Gary Key answers most people through his sticky threads up top and through PM. He has been very good at replying to my concerns n questions. No need for him to address the whole prime forum as everyone, believe it or not, doesn't have major issues. If you truly wish Gary to address you, then post in his threads or send him a PM. Trying to call him out through your thread rifle won't help. As there is no proof of a mass return. If anything, the prime is still selling as we are seeing more n more new owners here. Plus if you want proof that not all are affected by issues, then check out the positive Prime thread.
You will not get any answers from Asus or Gary if your Prime is one of the ones with one of the major issues either return it for a refund or exchange that's the bottom line and end of story.

You're all overestimating Gary's assignment to this forum as "official XDA troubleshooter." He has a full time job and Asus has a hierarchical support network to deal with consumer issues. He's not a replacement for that or here to do individual bidding. Abuse the resource and it will be gone.
Asus respond please
I too would like to see an official response from Asus on what is happening with quality, retailer inventory, problem resolution, and expected wifi performance under different scenarios.
I'd also like to see something on the Asus website where users can get an update on what is happening. To say that users should PM Gary on one-by-one basis or depend on support through a unofficial 3rd party forum is insane.
I returned my prime but really would like to repurchase the product if I can feel confident that Asus is going to resolve the issues and support the product.
How about a single page which is updated at www.asus.com as to what's happening, maybe even include a FAQ section which includes solutions to common issues. Seems like that would be alot more effective than PM'ing the marketing manager for one-one-one support. For those that Gary did respond to, I'm sure you think it's the best support out there. But this is not an effective means to support the masses.

I agree. It's only fair to the masses. But we can't abuse what we do have going on here though with Gary like Barry said.
What I have observed is Gary is doing damage control.
If you don't want to deal with TF201 issues (GPS, WiFi range, WiFi/BT, screen colors, dead pixels, faulty chargers, screen bleed, screen colors, battery life, random lockups, serial not found, loose screens, etc) just return your prime, while you can.
There are many, many of us who are willing to accept the Prime with one or more of these issues. After all, its a first run and these minor issues are to be expected.
If you RMA your Prime, it seems most are returned to you with "no problem found" at best. At worst, your Prime will be damaged at Asus and in addition to paying for the RMA shipping, you will be paying for the damage caused at the RMA facility.
If you are outside your return window and are stuck with the Prime, please open your minds and join us TF201 fanboys. You will receive alot of support from us!!! We love our Primes unconditionally. And the more we are, the better for us all!!! If we are enough, the mod community will grow. Who knows, maybe one of us will come up with a viable dremel mod, or even a new plastic replacement case.

No, we TFP fanboys are like Honey Badgers. Doesn't matter what anyone says. This tablet is the fastest, best tablet ever designed. It smokes every other tablet out there.
I agree with Barry. Gary can help but while he can offer advice he doesn't own the company. Mine is in RMA for the third week. I've finally made peace with the fact this isn't the tablet for me and if and when it ever comes back I'm ebaying and moving on. Not being negative. It is what it is for me. I don't think it will bother Gary if one gets returned or 10,000. Asus has many products and all companies figures a certain percentage to returns and allowances.
I hope this thread is a joke.
Btw, respect to the Honey Badger!!!

So I just exchanged my Prime as someone suggested in this thread because Best Buy had some Primes that they just got in stock.
I am sad to report that the New Prime I got has the same Bluetooth / Wi-Fi drop off issue as the one I returned plus this one has major light bleed on the right side. So now I am worse off then I started.
I feel I might not have to go though this return process if Asus would be more honest with us.
This is what I was scared of and why I wanted to know before I returned if my issue could be fixed with an update.
Now I have to return again for the 3rd time if they have anymore.
Don't return it dude. The Prime is the most advanced tablet ever made but there are a few minor issues you may encounter. Its all part of being part of the cutting edge of technology.
TFP has ICS, which is the latest. Its not like Asus has said whatever, we're making a better tablet and abandoning TFP. Yes, they making better tablet, but their focus is still TFP.
We have the fastest, most best tablet ever made. Who cares about minor problems (which should have been expected anyhow, since this is first run).
My stupid friend said his iPad1 runs the latest iOS and surfs websites smoother than TFP. Boy, does he have a lot to learn!

Just remember that's why you were allowed to wait and pay so much less than the tf700 so that you could get this Honey Badger of a tablet. You shouldn't have to expect for it to work.

If you read through some of the longer threads you'll see references to "good" Prime's and "bad" Prime's. The loyalists will say their "good" Prime's are in the majority while those with issues will say the "bad" Prime's are. There have been Prime's in the first batch w/o issues and samples of the latest build with them. Some people have had to go through quite a few exchanges to get a Prime they're happy with while some got a "good" Prime from the first batch built on the first shot. Keep in mind that both "good" and "bad" are subjective. With that said, it's your call.
I would definitely get it. I have one and yes there was wifi and GPS issues but a recent update has fixed the wifi issue on my prime

Which, indirectly, is an answer unto itself.
who needs GPS?
Well, i decided to open my box. it's the new champagne version and as the wifi works (so far) the gps doesn't at all.. then again it's snowing here so it may not work until there's a nice, clear day. i'm giving mine the benefit of the doubt and we shall see over the coming weeks if it was a good decission or a bad one as i will end up making a thread about what issues i come across eventhough i haven't gotten even midway through a quarter of the threads based around this workhorse.
stay tuned. but as for me, even with the gps not being amazing, or even working... i'm still happy at this point
There is quite alot of complaining going on here. But dont let yourself be fooled by that. There are/were some issues with Primes, my guess is that its mostly early models that had some preproduction problems.
Most users here are very happy with their Primes myself included. My wifi is perfect wherever i am in our house, i could even use it in the garden if it werent -10° Celcius
In fact if i compare it with wifi analyzer to my phone its almost always a bit stronger. Also my GPS works pretty reasonable when i'm outside, getting a fix in under a minute, not the strongest but it works.
Everything else is just astounding. Browsing, gaming, reading books/comics ist just an amazing experience. Everything is smooth, battery is amazing (no .13 patch in europe yet), in fact i hardly ever power up my desktop pc anymore. High quality flash in fullscreen or even outputted to an HDTV is just nice.
Oh and i have a perfectly smooth and working n64 and psx with me now. All the time Wh00t!?
I really have nothing bad to say at this point. And btw, this is the first unit i got. No exchange was needed.
If you are comfortable dealing with bugs, exchanging the product several times until you receive a good working unit, receiving little to no support, being without the tablet during RMAs, and probable hardware issues which cannot be fixed with software, I say buy it.
Myself, I returned mine for something more stable, the acer A200. I'm waiting for either a fixed TF201 or a different quad core tablet.
I received a bad unit and might seem negative. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Get it, try it. If you like it, keep it. If not, return it. But, do NOT keep it past the return period if you actually want to return it.
Keep in mind that any future update may make you wish you had returned it.

- If you want to use GPS with your tablet I would recommend waiting.
- If you do not have a pressing desire/need for a tablet right now I would recommend waiting.
Given those two qualifications I would say go for it but do so with open eyes. Know your return window and if your unit has problems, or you can not live with the limitations, then be sure to return it in time. Personally I am quite fond of my TP but it would be foolhardy to deny that many have had problems.
If you can wait till June/July then I would recommend waiting for the 700 series transformer. Chances are Asus will have learned something from the TP and will update the wireless. Additionally by then the tegra 3 chipset will have been around long enough for the supporting code to be better situated. Finally the reported 1920x1200 screen is very enticing for me.
Ignoring the 700 I am sure the other manufacturers are not sitting on their laurels either. It might be worth a wait to see what comes out.

Janet said it best. If you don't need a tablet right now, there's zero harm in waiting. Hopefully Asus will work through the issues and a Prime purchased in the future will be more stable. If not, there are other tablets coming out so there will be something to compare to. Hopefully at MWC on the 27th manufacturers will do more than have a beauty pageant and actually announce some release dates.
If you are going to give it a try - make sure you buy from a store with a good return policy. 30 days, no shipping back fees and no restocking fees.
I have returned 2 and will return the 3rd. All of them had problems.
From my experience, I was amazed when it was advertised. I bought it, wasnt satisfied, exchanged it, wasnt satisfied again, in process of exchanging it, then the update screwed my wife's prime, so I returned that hers and cancalled mine for a full refund. We choose to wait for the prime to get its bugs out or a newer or better one to come out that we can try out and see if it something we can rely on.

Possible To Exchange (non Best Buy ) Prime for t700 on ASUS Company itself?

So I have a 64gb Prime, 1, almost 2 months with me after buying it from "AMAZON." this is a fraud product. it is not "primed to perfection" like the prime's slogan states. i have expeirenced the faulty wifi, and gps just like the others and is bothering me alot. i really want to exchange it for an infinity, or at least a newer prime w/o connection defect. has anyone tried this and successfully exchanged it for a infinity/fixed prime? we should also make a petition about this on asus for making a defective product to us consumers....
I too bought my prime 32gb from amazon, and would like to hear if we could exchange it for the Infinity

No candy coating. Its not going to happen. Best thing you can do is send it in for RMA. If you plead your case enough and sound convincing enough, there's a minute chance of refund. They not even really doing refunds anymore but you won't know unless you ask or try. But don't get your hopes up on them exchanging prime for an infinity pad. Its not going to happen. Not to sound negative but just being realistic. I've already looked into this. This came from Gary and Tien. No exchanges for infinity pad happening. If you experiencing problems with your device, best solution is to RMA it. Depending on what the issue is, good chance it will come back fixed. even for wifi issues, there have been sligght improvements made from rma. On the flipside, some have no noticeable improvements also coming back from rma. It all depends on how the performance of it falls into thier baseline standard or whatever. They do havea new method of reworking the antennae sttenuation to improve its reception.
Just call them and see whwt they say. A petition wont really do any good, IMO. We have seversl other similar petitions that seemed to fail or not produce any results.
Good luck!
Actually, Never say Never. They could change something in the near future. But at present time, what I previously said was the response on exchange from them. Aside from possible wireless issues, I still believe JB update will bring about a huge improvement in prime performance. JB will include new rom, newer updated kernel, newer up to date drivers, more optimizations.
Sound like interesting on the up coming JB for the Prime. I hope that it is worth to wait.

It is probably based on his experience with JB on the Nexus 7 and the fact that Asus has publicly stated the TF201 is scheduled to get JB at some point in the future.
The current Asus policy is no refunds or exchanges but Asus could always have a change of heart. The Infinity is just now hitting the stores. If demand is weak and Asus is left with a lot of product sitting in their warehouse they may be more open to some kind of upgrade program for Prime owners.
I hope there is a change of heart. I bought mine from newegg. Really wish BB had one in stock when i was looking to purchase, otherwise this thing would have been taken in for exchange like all the other lucky members have been able to do.

I seriously hope I don't have to go this route... my prime is getting back from RMA sometime this week. If they couldn't fix the problems I mentioned, (specifically WiFi and Bluetooth) I have enough faith that they will have someone reasonable enough I can talk to who can get me an infinity replacement. Considering the infinity is being sold side-by-side at the same price as the prime, I don't see why they would argue against that. The infinity model simply doesn't have the defects the prime has which are covered by their warranty.

My prime has just entered RMA for a cracked screen. I'm kind of hopeful that there might be some QA type improvements so GPS might work better - and that's really all I need (assuming I/O can be improved enough with unlocking - was holding out for an RMA reason before i unlocked, but was hoping it would be something minor!).
If the repair is not free, it'll be small claims court for me too.

I now find asus as idiots, releasing a defective model. even when they know millions of primes are experiencing the problem, they still do not do anything but repair nothning. a simple recall and change for a really fixed version or the infinity that really fixed the networking problems should be implemented. wahahha
A recall is not necessary if only a small percentage of devices have bad problems - they need to be realistic about replacing genuine bad units though.

Could it make sense to head to a collective lament, incl. international customers? Even if we wont get it through, it might forces ASUS to move and avoid negative press.
Reading these latest posts are like experiencing deja vu from months ago. They are filled with newer users filled with hope that ASUS will fix the issues promptly via RMA and surely have people ready at the phone to assist with issues.
My greatest fear for you all, since this is a development forum afterall, is that the rma process doesnt turn off your ability to unlock your device, as it has for so many, once you get your device back and you eventually decide to unlock to actually partake of the "development" and use roms that actually fix many of the issues.

Why would we, or should we, has to unlock? Possibly voiding any ASUS warranty for a device we expected to be 100% out of the box. And paid over $650US for.
Unlocking is a bandaid that ASUS should supply.
The guys who bought from Best Buy are incredibly lucky and yes I am jealous, lol
Getting an exchange from my point of sale (Dixons) is out of the question
If it wasn't for the Asus presence on this forum stating that the teething problems were being worked on and would be fixed, I would have returned the tablet shortly after receiving it.
I'm very disappointed that they claimed the Prime was *not* being EOL'd and now look at where we are.
Personally I feel like Asus has just abandoned this tablet and the loyal customers that bought it.
(I've lost count of the Asus motherboards, soundcards, routers etc. I've purchased over the years...)
RMA'ing is just beyond a joke, and support is next to useless.
I would love to see Asus do the right thing and offer an exchange program for remaining Prime owners, but I cannot see that happening
Heck, I would even pay £££ to exchange and be rid of this tablet and it's sluggishness, under performing WiFi/BT and the plethora of other problems.
Oh, and I do not see the GPS dongle as a true solution to the non functioning GPS that was advertised as I cannot use it with the dock attached (which peeps in the UK were forced to purchase with the Prime as there were no tablets being sold without the dock.) or even a power cable.
Sorry for the rant, but after living with the problems of this tablet, and then seeing people able to return in exchange for a fixed version, It kinda pisses me off and I think that everyone should be treated fairly and be able to use the same/similar service no matter where you are or what store you purchased from.
Don't get me wrong though, I am very happy for those who managed to get an exchange, I am just annoyed that others like myself cannot do the same thing.
And before anyone suggests unlocking and flashing custom ROMs. Why should I let Asus off the hook and void my warranty?
Asus should be fixing the problems or replacing the hardware with something fit for purpose.

1 Month since we've heard from Gary

Are you still around or did you abandon us and move on? A quick update of any progess would be nice at this point.
I think an attorney snooping around ASSUS files would get some action. Time to make some demands or look into class action.
This is no way to treat a cash paying customer.
Not sure what you guys are expecting this late in Prime's life..
Make no mistake, I am by far one of the biggest critic of Asus & heck... Gary too...
Also, I've kept saying this for a while... "Gary is marketing/PR person. He is here for dmg control"
He wasn't here to "HELP" or whatever, nor can he really give an insight into anything... this is XDA, if Asus really wanted to help us... S/W or Engineer would have been in this board... NOT A MARKETING guy.

Yeah the prime has been out for sooooooooooooo loooooonnnngggg !!
Its hardly old ! Alot of primes are still under warranty...
I've now unlocked so my warranty is void (perhaps what asus want from everyone really) but i dont consider the prime to be an old device.
I agree that Gary was only here to calm the flames though, as you rightly say theres no point sending a marketing guy .. i honnestly think his purpose was to keep us quiet for a while. and it worked!

Spot on mate, GARY is not ASUS, he just represents/works for them.
Abandon all hope!!
I have pmd and sent Gary emails recently also the other person he said to contact (asus_usa) with no response from either.
My prime has had the infamous wifi issue which actually got worse through updates---it is sitting in RMA AFTER a LEVEL3 TECH AT ASUS said they would treat it as warranty even though i had unlocked the bootloader
Its status is waiting o customer-out of warranty/customer induced damage----it has been there almost 1 month!!!
A person in rma said it is going to cost me 165 for motherboard and 40?? not sure the exact figure labor WTF. She also said after last email she would look into it and reply ASAP--that was last week Thursday
I feel I have been lied to, misled, and ripped off!!!
happened last month as well a month in between cryptic messages, honestly give up on Asus Already we have had these devices nearly a year now and support has been horrible how long since we got an update again?, if you want something less buggy grab CM10 or Hairybean and call it a day, ASUS will slap JB on the device and probably be done with it, whenever that happens
Since everyone's prime has a year warrenty then I'd say all Primes are still under warrenty. My Prime runs just fine. Not compalining it would be nice to get an update of some sort.
Here in Germany we have 2 years implied warranty. So there is over 1 year until the first warranty runs out.

Late in Prime's life?
It's a 9 Month old Tablet, with better specs than most things out there running JB already. Not to mention that the hardware it's pretty much the same as the other Transformers.
Honestly, how many updates have been promised/delivered to your phones in its first year. The transformer prime has already gotten more updates than any of the phones I've had. And JB was confirmed for us shortly after Google announced it. I have a flagship phone from last year and it only just got official ICS. Asus supports there hardware better than any company. God forbid they make JB as stable as possible.

It has been exactly 98 days. That is really not very long at all, particularly when you take into account that its a major release rather than just a minor update to the existing OS. Think of all the phones out there that were released after the TP that have not even seen ICS yes let alone JB. You folks are update addicts.

It is a long time if you consider that the Prime is suffering from several software related issues which should have been fixed several months ago. ASUS should be pushing out patches every few weeks until the tablet is working as advertised.
I don't recall seeing in the Ads for this tablet that "You can expect ANR messages constantly when browsing, or your tablet will be unusable when the Play Store is updating all your apps! Yes you to can enjoy these great features all for a low price of $500! But wait theres more... If you order now, you can enjoy completely random reboots at no extra charge!"
It has been almost a year since its release... the prime should be stable as hell right now, but that is not the reality. I am not usually one to complain about these types of things, but even I am getting frustrated with the lack of fixes. Really hoping that JB will solve all of these problems and make the tablet work as it should have from day one.

Yes, and how many of those phones have crazy QC & wide range of issues like Prime? Plus, you are forgetting that most are on Android 4.04 (final & most stable version of ICS....)
Also, lets stop this argument of "Asus updated often compared to all other device".
While it might be true, it also means PRIME had ton of issues/bugs to fix through updates..... however, the updates only added more issues instead of resolving them.
Plus, those looking for GARY to solve everything... he won't, and he can't. HE IS JUST MARKETING GUY. Nothing more, nothing less...
Those thinking JB will resolve all of your current issue... IT ALSO WON'T. S/W cannot fix H/W issue...... If you have crap WIFI.. blah blah blah... it'll be crap with JB as well.
And to those who keep saying.. "mine works fine, ppl are blowing things out of proportion". No, we are not. Glad you have a working product that suits your need.... but... DUE TO CRAZY QC issue, there are MANY.. I mean MANY who have absolute garbage device. Yes, we all tried calling customer support, contact gary/asus_tien, ***** at where we purchased our tablet, RMA... blah blah blah for refund or whatever.

I might suggest that "more updates than any other phone" is not a good thing.
All these updates are band-aids for the TF201 beta that should never have been released in the first place.
Poor decisions by an even poorer company.

How can constant sw updates to address issues be a bad thing? My epic touch has HORRIBLE battery life after the move from GB. You know what Samsung did? Called it quits on the s2. Asus is still pushing updates to the original transformer. Fixing issues with updates sounds like good practice to me.

s2 will get jb in next few months, hasnt been abandoned..
problem with the prime update is that the last update is unstable and has been so for 98 days from now. last time my prime came back from rma, software resetted and it gave crashes and SOD from the first day.
custom jb rom: no problems at all!
conclusion: bad software with no patches.

You make that sound like a good thing. The reason the Prime received these updates is because the OS and possibly the hardware was horribly kludged. Every update was put out to address reboot, SoD, freezing issues, Wifi, GPS, Bluetooth, the list goes on. It had nothing to do with improving functionality as much as it did giving the expected functionality to the unit.

That's exactly what there trying to avoid this time around. 3 semi stable ICS updates that introduced new issues. Or 1 JB update that they test the crap out of. The reason its taking so long (which isn't really that long) is cuz prime owners have a tendency, rightfully so in SOME cases, to complain about everything. My point is there is no justified reason to complain about there software update practices.
