GPS works all the sudden - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I was doing some WiFi speed tests today/tonight and I was changing channels on my router looking for the best frequency and I noticed the GPS icon was showing as locked so I opened GPS status and sure enough I had lock then I checked Nav and Latitude and try both got a lock quick. It seems like the more I get GPS to lock the better its getting. Im doing theses tests from various place inside my house including the basement.

Did it not work before?

Looks like Bluetooth interferes with wifi and now wifi interferes with gps. Observe the gps while switching router channels, set it back to the initial setting, you may have discovered something here.
---------- Post added at 07:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:39 PM ----------
So what was the channel setting with the gps locked on?

Im using the lowest frequency setting on the router and the tab is docked. Right now Im checking to see if being docked is making a difference

Are you sure it's not building up some sort of cache? Try going for a drive with the thing, see if it's still working better.

You're showing 3 locks out of 5 sat with a 20m accuracy, that's pretty good. Keep on working at your wifi frequencies and keep a record of when the gps is affected. This is good news!

Hi how do I use this software. For some reason my gps is working well. I would like to give you the info just dont know how to use the software op shows. I had 10 out of 13 on the bottom where he has 3 out of 5. Does wifi need to be on or off when using the software, sorry if noob question new to tablets.

I will continue testing tomorrow gotta spend some time with the wife. I would recomend every Prime owner to play around with your router settings you will be amazed at how much your WiFi will improve

Try taking a screenshot after opening up and getting a lock on GPS Test or GPS Status. What the OP is doing changing the wireless channels on his router, so presumably, Wifi is on.

This could be going somewhere! Even though GPS is pretty insignificant for most tablet users, this is the biggest issue with the Prime.

Very easy, I assume you have dl'd it from Market. Just click on the icon, it will check your gps and go to settings for you to turn it on. Click the back button and you should have the gps screen with all the bells and whistles going.

I assume he did this with wifi off, because no one really is having luck with it off. The software he is referring to is in his router's settings (most likely). He is messing with the channels and frequency. Maybe changing from n to g or b.

Thanks a bunch piston, you sure got me going here. C ya!

Anytime a 201 gps is working well means it is another nail against the argument that the backplate is causing the problem. Sure wish the people at Asus are looking hard into this.

No, he was probably doing it with Wifi on. He said he was messing around with the channels to test his Wifi speed when he noticed his GPS getting a lock.

Not exactly. The GPS isn't necessarily working better than it would normally. More testing is required to really see what's causing this.

How do I take a screen shot then I can show you what mine says. Also my wifi is full bars and it wasn't before I updated to ICS. I'm not close to my router so thats new. Tried volume button, power trick, didn't work. I'm not rooted yet so I guess I cant take a screenshot. :-(
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium

Sorry if I gave you bum info, if you want to show your screen then dl one of the screenshot apps from Market, very easy to use. Have fun!

On ICS, a screenshot can be taken by holding the Volume Down button and the Power button usually, but I don't have my Prime yet, so I don't know if it's different for the Prime.
It may also be by holding down on the recent applications button, since most screenshots seem to show it being activated.
@tedr44
Screenshots are built into ICS.

DL a screenshot app from Market, a good one is Screenshot UX Trial. When you run it, a setup screen will allow you to set up your trigger to capture your screen. If you're not rooted you may have to look for an app that does not require root. Good luck!

Agreed but my impression was the OP's gps wasn't working before and all of a sudden it had a lock. I'm very curious as to how he reached that situation while testing his router settings.

Well, we don't know whether it wasn't working before. What we do know is that he was able to get a lock while testing his Wifi speeds, and that it was getting better and better.
I'm inclined to believe that it built up a cache on his location, since he was in the same general vicinity (his home, presumably). Well, I'm no expert on these things, so I'm not exactly sure.

I need help with my WiFi(constant droputs)

Router: Netgear Wndr3400
ROM: vipermod
The image below is of a scan I did in WiFi analyzer. Scan frequency of 1 second.
As you can see its very frustrating. And its not like I have a poor signal.
I have searched everywhere and tried many things. (Turning WiFi performance on, messing with the channels)
No dice.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, you didn't list that in your OP. Sounds like a trip to Sprint repair is in order. You've already done the only other fix I've heard of, changing channels.

No, no this has to deal with the roms we download. I was on Cm7 and it constantly dropped when i was on my phone surfing the web. Switched to nightley 150+ #build and it did not drop on me. I recently Switched to MIUI and it has started to drop on me, this is frustrating when you need to download a rom.
My only guess is it has to deal with the roms we download. Before anyone says anything no, my wifi is on a NO SLEEP policy, it not likes to drop the wifi while im surfing the web.

It's not the rom. I had the same problem with my EVO3d before and after rooting and trying multiple roms. I tried a different router and haven't had a single problem. It is clearly and issue between the router and the phone. Now I just need to figure out why they don't get along. Ive heard about switching channels but haven't had a chance yet.

Ya, your right its not the rom. I tried switching channels from auto to the one i needed but it didn't help and then i went back to auto and it worked well for a bit. Now it isn't working well.
Notes + im on a HTC Increíble. My router cost me 139$, ive never had a problem vía wifi nor on ethernet. This is strictly something on these roms, trust me ive looked into this alot. The only conclusion is that..
If you think about, did your signal drop with your stock rom? Not mine.. Until i Switched to Cm7 i randomly have connection issues? Lol

You keep mentioning cm7. I'm assuming u do not have an evo3d correct? And my stock phone straight out of the box and after rooting and flashing a custom rom had the same problem with one of my routers. It works just fine with other routers. Also the signal doesnt fade or drop like with my og EVO, it simply disconnects then reconnects 30 seconds later.
Edit: just realized you said u have an incredible. Also no other phone or device, including my old EVO, has had this problem. There must be a setting within my router that isn't playing nice because it is the only router my EVO3d has a problem with.

On my OG evo the only time i had problem with wifi was on cm7 but that was just weak signal. Nothing like this. If you like at my pic in the first post it is scanning every second. so its not like its disconnecting for 30 seconds. Which is weird because it says im connected the whole time.

Hmm, that's odd I am having the same problem but only its not my router.
But yeah, I'm usually on for 30 minutes to an hour and it drops for 20-30 seconds. Disrupting my downloads, I have heard there is a program for I think what you need axe. You said it's refreshing every second? If I'm right I remember seeing you could change your refresh rate somewhere to save battery life too.
So we have the same problem but different issues.
Hmm...
Edit------ My old router was terrible and did not want to cooperate with any of these devices I use. So I bought a 139$ Router and works perfect.

naw the refresh rate i was talking about was just how frequent it scanned the signal strength in wifi analyzer.

ya.
Just some more info on my problem.
When i run a speed test the ping is very quick (~50ms)
But once the download test starts it just dies. It freezes on a number then goes to "network communication issues"
Hmm, yeah it might be a router problem for you guys.
When I do that it finishes, I'm just having wifi issues.
Mine occur only in certain roms as stated above, with miui and cm7. Nightley though worked, I didn't have any drops. I'm thinking about switching to a sense 3.0 here soon to see how it stands up.

Router
I've had similar issues with stock and custom ROM's on my old Hero. I started having similar problems with my 3VO, so the first thing I did was reset the wireless settings on my router to default and then redo the SSID, change the channel and power setting, and of course - change the password.
I haven't had a problem ever since.
I had the problem on my Stock ROM. Actually it only showed up when connecting to my N router, but did not happen when connecting to my G router. However my issue I had to turn off the radio and then back on before it would reconnect. I downloaded something called WiFi fixer. This fixed my issues completely. Hmmm, might have to play with some different kernels and turn off the fixer and see what happens.
Check router firmware netgear.com/support. They have WiFi issues on 3700 maybe yours too

POLL WiFi Deadspot Test

You will need another tablet, laptop, or smartphone with wifi to do this test I have done the test with two primes on 4 different routers all with the same result the primes drop/lose the WiFi signal to all the routers 5-15 ft before other WiFi devices.
To do the test simply keep walking your non prime WiFi device away from your router until you find it drops the signal you may need to keep refreshing available Wifi networks when it drops off this is the deadspot then find the area where your other WiFi devices will connect but with only 1 signal strength once you find this spot see if the Prime will pickup the WiFi network in this same spot I have not been able to on 4 different routers the range is always weaker with the Prime.

Actually no there is no poll for this only the GPS it would be nice to know if some Primes might have a different WiFi adapter.
For the people saying their Primes WiFi is just as good please list the model # of your routers.
I've done a similar test. after reading wifi issues I made sure to test mines. my prime wifi range is on par or even better in some instances than my Ipad 1. you have to remember also that router/network settings might be affecting Prime. they was a guy in another thread that his prime was getting slower speeds than his PC and phone. he eliminated the problem down to his router. his router was dual broadcasting with one being the 5Ghz channel that prime doesn't support. sometimes this messes with primes reception or whatever or download/upload speeds. so he cut off the 5ghz channel. now his Prime consistently gets same download speeds and range as his other devices. also wifi strength fluctuates no matter what device. there was times where my prime pulled alot faster download speeds than my Ipad.
I think this is a good test though to test reception strength. if other devices are android, you could easily just use wifi analyzer app to see n hear the strength of signal. remember though, eliminate all variables before just blaming the product. because network/router settings can have major impact on wifi performance.

apps are great but nothing is more accurate then simple real world tests of where the WiFi signal totally drops out with another WiFi device then seeing if te Prime hits the same range. As far as variables and different routers etc I agree with you but my tests on 4 different routers have showed conclusively that my Primes WiFi range falls short of 5 different WiFi devices I tested (2 smartphones, 2 laptops, and a smartphone).

Id also be willing to bet my paycheck they didnt do the test properly if at all. People who are just voting based on the fact that they can connect to their WiFi network in their home with no problem and while the WiFi issue is not a very big deal because its only 10 ft or so range difference it still shows the aluminum backing is probably the reason for the slightly weaker WiFi signal not because ASUS found a problem with a perticular WiFi adapter and started putting different WiFi adapters in the Primes.

You would be surprised how big of a deal this could actually be to some people it could be the difference between being able to use your tablet in your kitchen to being able to lay in your bed and use it obviously every situation is different but it would be very possible..... Luckily though they make things called range extenders and or repeaters that can be setup to repeat the WiFi signal to cover any deadspots you might have in your house..... I personally recommend the EnGenious range extender that can be found on Newegg for $40 if anyone is interested
I tested again today at a public WiFi hotspot from my car I think this confirms the backing is the reason the GPS doesnt work properly.
Well, my TF101 is really poor at getting signal from my router, much worse than any other WiFi device I have. f TF201 has even worse WiFi I'm glad I haven't bought it.
This sucks. I want to keep this tablet. I really do. They're just making it so hard to justify it. The GPS issue stinks, but I really don't care about GPS on a tablet, so I'm fine with that. The WIFI, on the other hand, is very important. I was in denial that there was really an issue with it, as general browsing in my small apartment is fine, but I got around to doing some tests today, and I am not pleased.
Using the speedtest.net app, I consistently get about 15-20 Mbps on my iPad1, 8-15 Mbps on my Galaxy Nexus, and about 3-5 Mbps on my Transformer Prime. Yuck.
In addition to that, I tested by transferring a large file over my home network from my PC to my devices using FTP, and it peaked at about 4 Mbps on the Transformer Prime and hit 8 Mbps on my Galaxy Nexus. YUCK.
I'm going to try and get to a buddy's house today to do some distance tests, and I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be pleased with the results.
I really do love everything else about this tablet, but this just really sucks. What good is a tablet with crappy wifi?
With the dock would android support any USB Wi-Fi adapters? just curious

Report issues with ICS leak here.. OP updated 5-1 with list

I thought it would be a good idea to have a place where people can post their issues for others to see before they flash, or developers to fix when they build roms. Or, even better, we the users can try to troubleshoot the issues and confirm/share a fix with everyone else.
If you DO have issues, please state if you are using the stock RUU or one of the roms I'm sure will be pouring out over time..
*AND*
If anyone has any of these issues and can confirm please include in the title ISSUE or CONFIRMED(or workaround/fix along how it was done) in your post along with which issue and I will try to update the OP accordingly.
Example Title:
Code:
Confirmed: 5. Post #88 report of not detecting a wifi access point..
This will help me a lot with updating the OP and helping users find fixes, etc
Reported issues:

Battery being TOO good(multiple times in this thread, lol) except #154 that reports unconfirmed worse battery when playing intensive apps/games
Multiple reports of reduced signal strength that fluctuates more(likely just a radio issue, build.prop edits linked in my signature helped me)
Post #88 report of not detecting a wifi access point- needs confirmation and troubleshooting if confirmed - punkmetalska please report your router settings.(Another user confirmed)

I am right there with you, my phone is prepped and ready to go-- I am just waiting till there is a little more feedback.. I have my old phone in case there is any headache getting switched I still have contact with the outside world, but I read the first 40 pages of the leak thread and it sounds pretty smooth if you understand how to do these things.

I use system tuner, it is a pretty bad ass app-- it should give a lot more detail about how the cores are running, even should have an option to choose how they run- but tons of features.. maybe you should check it out.
I am curious about the roms that will get produced, I would try capcombeta, but since it appears he did it for himself and has no intentions of supporting or continuing the rom, I think I will try the RUU later, or run it thru the kitchen myself adding and removing the things I like or don't like..
So to you two, on a 1-10 scale, how happy are you overall? Is it what you expected, more, or less? Have you tested everything? GPS? BT? WIFI? There must be SOME issues besides a little lag, lol.
And one of my few fears, at least because of experiences on my old phone-- if you wanted to go back to stock(or in our case, gingerbread) you had to be UBER careful to get the old kernels loaded before exiting CWM- simply restoring a nandroid did not do the trick.. so I am curious about what the process will be with our phones, if s-off means a nandroid backup would work perfectly, or if there would be extra steps to get back to gingerbread.
Couldn't be more happy with it, everything is working fine for me and battery seems to be lasting a lot longer so sar. Just install it and see

Yeah it works great for me too. Phone seems way faster and with more available memory than the previous update from T-Mobile. Face unlock is pretty sick too.
So I guess those of us on Telus will have to wait?? Anyone on Telus flashed this or would that be a mistake?

icy blue
I have the ics ruu flashed on my stock phone (locked, s-on). The odd thing is that it seems to run faster but at the same time whenever I check "running apps" and "available ram" I have 532mb free at most so far but I have seen as low as 392mb. On gb I was averaging between 600-480's. ( I don't use many apps)
I really want to know if there is a way to get the icy blue ICS look for the notification bar/icons?
I mean this is ICS, HTC I don't think many people prefer your average looking Sense notification bar over what google offers with ICS. (I'm also not sure why they didn't just keep the google search bar and pulled down notification transparent)

EVO LTE with WiFi issues on 4.2.2 ROMs only..

Hey guys I have a WiFi issue with all 4.2.2 roms that maybe someone can help me with.. It seems as if my WiFi will work fine for a lil bit than it seems to timeout or something if i stop using the phone for whatever period of time... If I turn it off, and on, it will work again and the process will continue as I just mentioned.. I've checked my WiFi settings and its not set to turn off dring sleep either... My router is a Belkin F5D-9230 Mimo G Router, and all my other devices work fine on WiFi or Ethernet.. Any help would be appreciated..
I'm s-off btw..
ummm
Mine does the same with any jb rom.
I use evervolv 4.2 works perfectly.
I also use mean bean ics works perfect also.
I have DLINK, tons of posts about wifi problems with DLINK
and THIS phone.
That and the off and on problem where when making a call the person on the other
end can't hear me, arrgh.
Next phone will not be an HTC.

So do the evervolv and mean bean give u those problems as well, or did u mean they work perfectly except with this wifi issue..?? Thanks for the response as well, maybe someone could help figure this out..
Maybe try using komodo. Also in settings you can set WiFi to 2.4 ghz only. There'salso some other settings I can't seem to recall now .

Go to the wireless setting in your 2wire change the channel and increase the power... Is it a 2701-HG?

What kind of router do you have? I have had all the at&t routers and I don't have issues connecting my phone to any of those, if it's the white 2wire increase the power output and change to a lower channel like 1-4, if it's a black one (pace or netgear) change from wpa to wep, you're gonna loose the wireless n and the router will broadcast in b/g...

mines a belkin, and it works fine on 4.1 roms only quirky on 4.2, as well as my data.. I'll lose data and go into 1x quite frequently on 4.2 roms.. I was certain I wasn't the only one experiencing these issues.. I'm S-OFF, full wipes before flashing, downloads all check out fine, etc...
Are you using wpa or wep? B, G or N? 2.5 or 5 GHz? Is channel on auto?
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
WPA, auto channel 11, its a belkin mimo b/g router..
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
I suggest to leave on g then change the channel to 1, leave it manual not on auto, try channels 1-5, and increase power if possible, I'm not familiar with belkin routers, but that's what I do with routers most of the time when I see an issue like yours...

First time poster here.
I've tinkered quite a bit to figure out the wifi issue. I'm currently running stock with goodies.
On the router side my 2.4ghz and 5ghz settings are similar and look like this

On the phone side I use a home screen widget called Wifi status widget to monitor my throughput. I get about 65 megs a second on 100% signal. On 80% I can get as low as 13 megs a second.
Limit your band to to 2.4 ghz or 5ghz.
Select best wifi performance.
Use rim toolbox as a build.prop editor. Make a backup of your current build prop and add this line to the end.
net.tcp.buffersize.wifi = 4096,87380,256960,4096,16384,256960
It increases the tcp stack memory which helps throughput from what I can tell.
Good luck.

WiFi shown as being "on" 100% of the time in better stats and I don't have it on. Any ideas why this is?

Try Smart Battery Saver from the Playstore. It has the option for Smart WiFi and might help solve your problem. Sorry, I do not know what caused the problem that made the WiFi shown as being ON 100% of the time.

I have the same issue. Are you stock, rooted, etc?
What's strange is if you look at the "awake" time on your image in the op it looks like it is going to sleep but shows otherwise on wake lock detector and BBS. I'm wondering if it's just a glitch that reports or interprets a permanent wake status when in fact there isn't. Using battery management software I've been able to get a .7%/hr discharge rate when the phone is idle. That's what I would expect, 7% drain in a ten hour period. Please correct me if this is still too high.
I never checked before rooting so I don't know if that was the cause. I'll probably factory reset after I update my baseband to match my firmware (mj4). If that doesn't work I'll probably just give up and just live with it as long as my discharge rate stays low.
I'll update after I'm done.

On this phone are a crazy number of WiFi settings. You may wish to fiddle with them all to get things where you want them. This drove me nuts, too.
Settings, WiFi, menu, advanced (see screen capture). Also running deep sleep app seems to help.
Hope this helps.

I've noticed that there are multiple apps sending out broadcast UDP packets, much more than one would expect. Most are headed to one or another of the google servers in San Jose. I would expect some form of occassional handshaking to sync or update location but not at this rate. Still, what perplexes me is that the discharge rate is within normal limits and the stock battery usage graph still has those little "awake" tics that typically register when the phone wakes up to do some housekeeping. I'm still needing to update my baseband (although I doubt that will make a difference). I'm also going to run a firewall app to see what happens.
This type of troubleshooting is lengthy and boring but since I'm home most of the time at least it offers me some brain drain every few hours (this also has become personal). If my next steps do not resolve this issue then I'll be going back to stock and root again only this time I don't care if I trip knox to 0x1. I like a good challenge but life is too short to take this issue to obsessiveness There is plenty of stuff out in the forums that I need to play with. Got's me some flash fever knocking at my door.

Hi alexv59, I'm stock rooted DeOdex freeza MJ4, nothing fancy, stock kernel, TWRP 2.6.3.7 recovery. Just viper4android, 4x1 reboot menu, and some harvested apps from other roms for my personal use. Stock SecSettings.apk. Either more WiFi options were added with MJ4, or you have to go into advanced WiFi settings (tapping the menu key from within WiFi gets you there, you may have to scroll down to see the choice).
Hope this helps.
