Hi,
Is Samsung KIES still usable after I update firmware using ODIN (and after I revert back to stock firmware). Thanks !
revert to stock rom and Kies
Dear cypherlwind,
Yes it is possible to use kies after reverting to a stock rom.
Keep in mind that it needs to be a official samsung stock rom.
See the following links to obtain a stock rom:
Official stock roms on xda:

Official Provider branded roms:

Original stock roms on sammobile
http://www.sammobile.com/
In order to update via kies the phone needs to have a stock combination of stock firmware, so a kernel, rom, csc and modem that shipped together, rather than mix and match.

I would stay away.

Hello, just to preface this- im not very technical, but i can follow instructions well.
Anyway, You guys were great to help me two months ago in rooting my phone. I ended up doing it through Odin and all went great. Got all the **** off my phone which was the main aim. I didn't put any custom roms on there as im a bit useless when it comes to this stuff and i felt i'd be pushing my luck after the rooting went so well.
Yesterday i used Kies and it asked me to upgrade the firmware as there was a new version available.
1. What should i do? Will upgrading through Kies reverse the rooting procedure or break my phone?
2. Should i get the newer update from this site? If so- is there any tutorial for updating the firmware after already rooting the phone through odin (chainfires method i think it was?
Thank you in advance for any advice all.
My phone details are ;
ANdroid 2.3.3
Baseband version I9100XXKE7
Kernel version; 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKF3-CL276555
[email protected] #2
Build number; GINGERBREAD.XWKF3
I have used kies to update firm ware after rooting and it did not UN root my phone so you should be fine. It did however install more useless apps that I had to remove.

i would update via kies then go to chainfires post and pick root and cwm to match your new firmwares kernel .
That way you wont have to learn how to flash stock firmwares etc .,

What JJ said is to flash via Kies and then flash the CF-Root kernel from Chainfire to get root and CWM in the phone.
Hi Azeurius,
the thing is that i already have root and cwm on the phone. Ive already rooted.
So im at the point where i can upgrade the firmware through kies, but im looking for advice what i should do overall- nearing in mind the fact ive already rooted, and phone details are in Openingpost.
THanks!
Ok well I am also new here but from everything I have read my understanding is that you have rooted your device and loaded the original Kernel for your current firmware. If you upgrade through Kies then you will obviously have an upgraded firmware with the old kernel (from your 1st rooting).
So when you upgrade your firmware you just have to also upgrade your Kernel through odin so your phone will still be properly rooted.
I stand to be corrected. I only started reading about rooting today as I just got my Galaxy s2 having come from a Blackberry so new to Android but loving it!!! Best os ever!
I think I will root my phone but not going to touch the firmware as ICS should be release on Kies soon cant wait

Any stock upgrade removes root .

Correct
One big problem with Kies is that if you change firmware its possible that you lose the Kies upgrade path as phone codes no longer match .

Hello guys. Im relatively new to XDA. So I might sound stupid. My question is, as jje mentioned above "One big problem with Kies is that if you change firmware its possible that you lose the Kies upgrade path as phone codes no longer match" am i correct in saying that if I update my Galaxy s II (rooted + cwm recovery no custom rom) via kies, then I could run into problems? Also one more question. If I do update via kies, will it remove root and cwm recovery?? Thanks guys. .

Use Odin
I think KIES forbides to upgrade on rooted firmware. Even if it allows you i think you will use your root. I suggest you if you want the latest stock rooted firmware use Odin find the stock rooted XWLSD(Nordic countries) and flash via Odin (Don't use XWLS8 it has bugs), XWLSD is super stable or XXMS1(Poland) or XWLSE(Russia) if you are not from this countries then use XWLSD. If you want custom rom with no mods and no bloatwares use Neat rom or Wanam lite rom, if you want custom rom with mods and no bloatwares use disaster, biftor, omega, alliance rom and etc.
Yeah. I dont mind losing root access. As log as I can get official ota. Btw has the exynos bug been addressed?

Thanks. I will be try updating my rooted i9500 and P600 via Kies. I am not sure if there is already an update for my region available for the S4 but I was prompted to update my P600 only to get a notification telling me that my device has been modified. This was for OTA updating. I really hope it works because I am really not looking forward to un-rooting these devices just for the updates since downloading the stock ROM takes forever. Will post results after trying just in case anyone is interested.
Hi,
I am new to flashing firmwares. I needed to ask few questions regarding flashing firmware on my i9100 running on stock ROM (I9100XXKI3) . My device is not rooted and is running stock. I wanted to update it on ICS via odin. But currently there are only beta releases by samsung. As my device is stock hence I can only flash it via Odin.
My question is that can i flash Litening ROM v1.1 (Based on latest leaked ICS) directly on my device using ODIN?
As it is the only ROM that is flashable using ODIN and running quite stable as per reviews.
Secondly will i be able to revert back to any stock ROM via odin to remove the yellow triangle that appears upon flashing an in secure kernel?
Looking forward to help from you guys.
Thanks

Yo're right, sammobile removed all ICS leaked Roms from the firmware page.
Lightning rom 1.1 is Odin package so you can download and flash it..
Download Stock rom for your region so that yo can flash it, if you want to revert back.. and yes it will remove yellow triangle from your phone
Thanks
I just tried flashing Litening ROM v1.1 via odin. Got stuck at factoryfs.img. Waited for 15min. nothing happened. Now restarted the phone and its working fine. The firmware is not updated. Can anyone tell me the solution?

You may lose your genuine ICS upgrade path via KIES flashing custom rom .

I'm with optus Australia [and rooted] with Lite'ning Rom v2.7 XWLP7
To install the new "official" ICS through Kies what are the steps?
If i do install the ICS will i loose the root and the apps?
1: you need to flash the official stock version for your region/carrier
2: flashing ics will stock will remove root and your apps will get deleted if you wipe which you will for better working phone.
3: you can always flash using odin which is faster and as official as kies

You're on a custom ROM. So to get the update through Kies, you will have to flash back to a completely stock firmware that has the appropriate CSC for your region. Sounds like for you that would be the latest Optus branded stock firmware for Australia. It's around several places... search for it.
OR... you could just flash the official ICS yourself through Odin. Clearly you've flashed a firmware before, as you're on Lite'ning ROM.

Any stock firmware update, either through Kies or Odin, will cause a loss of root. But not necessarily the apps. Those should stay - UNLESS if you install yourself via Odin, you happen to download a firmware package that is a wipe package. But it's recommended you do a full wipe when upgrading major versions anyways.
Thanks for your replies
confused more..............yes i did use odin to install customs ROM but that was last year and never tried it again as i spent a week just to make the phone work.
I know i'm bit lazy but is there a easy solution. or a link to learn the basic

What is a firmware?
What is a Kernel?
Can we install any Kernel regardless of a firmware and ROM?

Look at the roll up sticky in the general section. It has nearly everything you're asking for.
I have my s2 rooted with the stock Samsung Gingerbread ROM. I think ICS is now available through Kies but not for me because I'm rooted.
Where can I download the latest stock Samsung ICS ROM (is it called AOP)?
Thanks.
try sammobile.com or androidadvices.com

Even your flashing is done via Kies or Odin, you need to re-root your device. ChainFire supports rooting for stock ICS.

Hi,
there is probably problem with your CSC. You should have CSC corresponding to your region/country and your operator. I had the same problem and what I had to do was reset my CSC back to original. There are several threads relevant to this topic.
CSC can be reset using *#272*IMEI#, but maybe you will have to find and flash ROM containing your CSC to be able to do this.
you cant use kies when youre on a custom rom as far as i know. Only works with stock samsung firmware
Kies is a Stock Samsung ROM update tool. Therefore using any custom rom besides stock won't work with kies.
