I'm working on this thread to show others how I've gotten CWM running off of my NT.
This will be broken out into 2 sections: SDCard Execution and Internal Installation. I've verified that backup and restore works using both of these methods.
First I would like to thank Bauwks and Nemith who have developed the u-boot crack and recovery.img used in this process. Here are some of the threads that I used for this process:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1440645 - Nemith's CWM recovery.img
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1440438 - Next steps and Bauwk's internal image build process
METHOD 1 - SDCARD :
1. Setup SDCard
Using a new SDCard (not one you have info stored on) make a new MSDOS partition table and add a 50 MB FAT32 partition as the first primary partition. Then make sure you enable to boot and lda flags.
Any SDCARD larger than 50 MB should work but I used an extra 2GB laying around. You can add other partitions to the card if you want, but it is not necessary to allocate the entire card. Any added partitions would need to be manually mounted on your Nook anyway.
I used GParted on my Ubuntu machine to do this but any formating tool should work.
2. Copy Files onto SDCard
You can grab the files I used here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?dr6bqau194389te
Just UnZip the files directly to the root of the boot partition you created above (make sure flashing_boot.img, u-boot.bin, and boot.img are on the root not the folder SDCARD)
3. Insert SDCARD into NT
Now, with your NT powered off, eject the SDCARD you just created from your computer and insert it into the tablet. Then just turn it on and VOLA! You should now be in CWM!
You can then insert another (larger, preferably 16 GB +) SDCard and do a full backup.
METHOD 2 - Internal Installation:
ADB REQUIRED!!!!!
Make Sure you have Method 1 working before trying this! It is a good idea to have already backed up your device before proceeding.
Update 1/19/2012: I've modified the internal recovery.img to automatically execute the code in Step 4 which seems to have finally fixed the boot-loop. Now you can use CWM internally without having to be around your computer! Please see Pg 7 for details on how I fixed this issue.
Update 1/22/2012: I'm removing the warnings since this method seem to be verified by a lot of different sources. It looks like Indirect beat me too an APK so please see his thread if you want an easier way to install this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458630
1. Get Recovery Image
You can use the image I built from Buawks/Nemith source.
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?yodxftopf5qckgo
The original image I created (with boot-loop) can be found here but is considered obsolete. I'm leaving it here while the new image is tested:
http://www.mediafire.com/?k5azwo6modab9j9
2. Copy Recovery Image to SDCard
You can either push using
Code:
adb push /path/to/irrecovery2.img /mnt/sdcard/irrecovery.img
or just Copy/Paste from a computer.
I recommend using the SDCard but really you can push this file anywhere you can access it from the Nook.
3. Upload Recovery Image to Recovery Partition
Just follow these adb commands exactly!
Code:
adb shell
su
dd if=/mnt/sdcard/irrecovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3
Done! You will get into a boot-loop if/when you go into CWM.
You should now be able to fully backup and restore! To get into CWM either adb
Code:
su
Code:
reboot recovery
or power on the device while holding down N+Power (you may need to unplug usb and/or let go of the power button after boot if device keeps turning off).
NOTE: If you are getting a "Error mounting /sdcard" when using backup/restore you just need to remove and reinsert your sdcard.
4. Reboot out of CWM - Optional
If you still end up in a boot-loop just run these commands from adb to reset some security checks and get out of the CWM boot-loop. Check out this thread for an explanation of how this works:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1444630
Follow these simple steps to reboot:
1. Go to "mounts and storage" in CWM menu
2. Select "mount /bootdata"
3. Execute the following code (thanks Bauwks!):
Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/bootdata/BootCnt bs=1 count=4
dd if=/dev/zero of=/bootdata/BCB bs=1 count=1088
reboot
You can also just go to "reboot system now" if the last line of code does not work.
Welcome back! Now get to work on some roms!

I can upload an SDImage that you can use. It would be made the same way Nook Color SDcards are made (google around), but this is a much bigger file and it will take me a while to upload.
What issues are you having?

A little harsh but yea... EJECT the sdcard from the computer after you're done partitioning, then INSERT that sdcard into the Nook Tablet's SDcard slot.
It doesn't get any simpler than that
can you post some screenshots or a video or two showing how cwm works on the NT?

Write Image?
Can't we just write the image to an SD Card using Winimage?
Worked great. Backing up my image now as we speak!
If anyone has any questions doing this from Ubuntu don't hesitate to ask.

pffff many things like backup your entire nook (system, data, recovery,cache...) and restore when needed (used when you test other ROMs, or you messed something up), you can wipe/format partitions, flash .zip files (used for patches, fixes, tweaks, etc... you name it) you can fix permissions, wipe battery states, use adb, mount/unmount partitions including sdcard (if you forgot to put the file you were going to flash for example lol) format your sdcard and create ext(used for "apps to sd") and swap partitions.
Veronica
would be awesome, if somebody who has already done the steps, could post some pictures on how to do this under windows

Hey, in Ubuntu open terminal, put
sudo apt-get install gparted
Once you've done that plug your SD card into your reader, under system> administration (I'm running 10.10) select gparted.
Select the sdcard in gparted, format it in fat, create a partition in fat32 at 50mb.

For the partitioning, I used minitool partition wizard, easy to use and free. Google it or find it on my site http://www.makingitdigital.net/android/index.html
Cool, now I have not used adb shell or any of that stuff yet, so off to studying before step 2.

I have just bought an 8GB card and need to swop everything across from my 4GB. I'm rooted with apps2sd and MCR ROM installed.
Now the questions are:
What is the best way of doing this the right way?
Do i need to partition the new card, or does MCR do this i cant remember!
If i drag and drop everything from my 4GB to my 8GB will it work?
Will it pick
Anyone else had to do this?
Any help will be very much apreciated...
Just been thinking if i install the modded recovery image on my new card will i be able to create partitions with that?
I take it no one has done this then?
are you using windows or linux? for windows, make a backup of your apps with some app on your phone. mcr3.0 contains "backup", which should do the job. after that copy everything from the old sdcard to the new one, which you already partitioned according to your needs. it is probably best to do this from recovery image or in an external card reader. after that restore your apps and you're done.
if you are using linux you can skip the backing up of apps, just copy everything from the two partitions you have on your sdcard (one ext2/3/4, one fat32) to the according partitions on the new card and you're done.
Cool thank you i will try that.

ok, i am seriously confused now. there was this app called "backup for root users". my understanding was, that it was renamed "backup" on paul's request, and was then included in modaco's custom rom. so far i can not find it in the zip of 3.0... so i guess i got something mixed up there, i apologise.
anyway, you can download it from the market.

I want to reinstall the Zenexp Rom because it was a very nice Rom but I'm so used to having apps2sd for all my apps. The rom says that if I want to enable it I need to do the following:
" If you plan to use A2SD, you need to create the appropriate partition on your SD card. I recommend: Swap: 0MB, EXT2: 512 or 1024MB. Once you've partitioned, it is highly recommended that you convert your EXT2 partition to EXT3 in Recovery"
I don't know what this means. I managed to save my SD on my computer, luckily I did because I wiped out my whole SD on my phone and had no rom to reboot it to.
So, how do I set this up? please somebody help me. or take a look at the thread and explain it in laymen's term.
i think tnoob puts it in laymen well enough....
1. Boot into recovery
2. Scroll down to PARTITION SDCARD
3.Click On PARTITION SD
4.Click trackball to confirm
5.Select Swap size 32mb is fine
6.Select ext size (I did 768mb you don't have to make it that big)
7.Click again to partition sd card.
8.Go to PARTITION SD menu and choose SD:ext2 to ext3
hope this helpps...

It doesn't matter one way or another which one you use to format your SD card. The only thing it will do for your ROMs is if your ROM supports Apps2SD (not the Froyo-native A2SD), or you can flash/add Apps2SD to your ROM after the fact (some you can't), then you can have even more apps because ALL of your apps will be on the Ext3 partition on your SD card. Note that Froyo has problems with partitioned SD cards under most typical circumstances, so if you want that, then search for a thread (probably in the first three pages) in the Eris Dev forum about partitioning your SD card for Apps2SD use under Froyo.
In case you don't know already, the difference between native-Froyo Apps2SD and the other is that Froyo lets you move individual apps to your SD card, your SD card doesn't need to be partitioned at all (just one big FAT32 partition like normal), but some apps don't support being moved to the SD card, whereas the other Apps2SD, every single app can and WILL be on your SD card whether you like it or not.

1. You first use the "storage" menu to create a storage file (default 500MB) to be used as a partition. This partition is then automatically formatted to ext2 and mounted on the device startup.
2. From the "apps" menu you select an application and you have a list of the movable files.
3. You move/restore the files you wish.
Of course, don't do it for applications that start on boot, because the storage won't be mounted until the sd card is visible.

Is this only for 2.2 or can it be used for 2.1?
It can be used with 2.1 as it doesn't move the app itself (as the 2.2 system does), it moves the internal data in /data/data/<package>.
(requires root).
Glad to see the Dev himself here.
Hope many people benefit from this App.

Hm, perhaps a problem with your SD card ?
Try this from shell:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/sdcard/rallsd/storage bs=1024 count=102400 (for 100MB).
this is similar to the command used by my app. If it also stucks, then it seems that there's an error with your SD card (chkdsk ?)
If it works, notify me and I 'll take a look.

Three questions
I have three questions:
1) How can I reduce size of allocated memory space (I have mount 2 GB but now I see that is to much for my needs)

Thanks in advance!
Hey all, been reading a bunch on rooting the nook tablet so you would think I would be able to do this no questions asked but unfortunately I can't.
My nook is on that 1.4.3 so I am using this method here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21895025&postcount=14
and there is no zip in that original download and there is no gapp. So I tried to follow the instructions from page 25 here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466583&page=25
and then boot to the CWM. Now I go to try and unzip the zip I downloaded from page 25, and none of those are zips (side note, for whatever reason when I unzipped the files from page 25 into a folder so I could grab them whenever. Windows encrypted them. So when I copied them to the SD card I un-encrypted them)
So my question to everyone is: Where is this actual zip file and gapp at? My end goal is to root my Nook tablet to either ICS or Jellybean 'permanently' so as not to keep an SD card in it.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
It's probably easier to just skip plain root and flash ICS or Jellybean. Would you rather do that or stay rooted on the stock ROM for a while?

Yes, you can flash back. Are you familiar with ClockworkMod recovery? The first order of business is to decide whether you want CWM recovery flashed internally or just run it from an SD card. I'm assuming you want everything internal, but just making sure.

I am pretty sure I have the CMW installed on a SD card right now because I can boot to the area where you choose a zip. You know when you boot and you get the white background and the box center on screen.
Is it best to have it internal?
Yes, the white, then the box, then black screen with a bunch of options in neon blue lettering. It should say CWM recovery at the top somewhere. You have this, correct?

Correct, I have this on my SD card currently
You can keep it running from SD card or flash it internally. Either way, you'll always have the option to boot recovery from SD, that is, as long as you're able to boot from an SD card in general.
At any rate, you're ready to flash a new ROM. Download the ROM from the Development subforum that you want to flash and report back. CM7 is currently the most stable.

So the method in my first post makes my SD card a partition of 75mb or so. I won't be able to put the ZIP ROMs on to it. Do you have a link to a detailed instruction so I can write boot img on to the SD card without killing all my space? My SD card is 16gb.
Don't put the ROM on that SD card. Put the ROM zip and gApps on the internal storage of your actual NT (that's the /mnt/media partition). Then you can choose the option to "install zip from internal SD" in CWM.
Also, do you have a 16GB NT or 8GB? Which ROM will you be flashing?

I have the 16GB NT.
I think I will go with the CM7 mod, but I am so tempted to do the jelly bean CM10 mod. Have it on my galaxy nexus and love it. Edit: I have the stock 4.1 OTA update on my galaxy nexus not the CM10 mod
You might want to wait a little while. I get lots of black screens of death on my CM10 ROM. CM7 will definitely be an upgrade to what you're used to though, so don't worry about that.
Here's the directions for flashing a new ROM on your NT:
1.) Make a backup of your current ROM (just to be safe!)
2.) Advanced options -> wipe Dalvik cache
3.) Install your ROM.
4.) Wipe data and cache.
5.) Install gApps.
6.) Reboot and enjoy.

Hey thanks for the info, but where exactly do I throw this zip file onto the Nook at? You said to put it on internal storage. Can I put it anywhere?
Put it on the root of the /mnt/media partition. It's the partition that pops up when you plug your NT into a PC. Or navigate to it using the file explorer if you downloaded straight to the NT.

Hmm I must have that issue where my computer doesn't recognize the partition. Will have to research into fixing that.

Hmm wait, I connected it to PC without SD card in it and my Nook comes up as G drive, while the "partition" shows up as H drive? Windows wants to format it...I can't click into it right now either. Should I have windows format it?
No, Windows is never right. You want to put the ROM on the My NOOK (X: ) drive. Can you do that?

Yes, I can put it on my actual My Nook G: (I assume I have less SSD/HDD than you or named them differently) and the other drive for the nook is considered a 'removable disk'
The My Nook has the files:
.adobe-digital-editions
.android_secure
.docThumbs
B&N Downloads
DCIM
LOST.DIR
My FIles
.devicesalt
Sound about right?

Put the ROM in the My Files folder. That should do it.

So I did that, boot to CMW.
Now I click through into that zip folder to try and find file to unzip and it says no file found on all the options.
Guys, my NT is rooted.
Now I need to make a bootable SD card with CWM v6 to flash CM10 ROM.
What's an easy way to do this?
Thanks
Use CM9-10_CWM_v6.0.1.2_8-16gb_tools_sdcard.zip from here.

I saw that thread, but a little confused how to follow the directions in there.
Any other simpler way to make a CWM v6 bootable SD card?

This is the easiest way I found:
1) Download 3 files listed below here: (http://four-nineteen.com/veronica/XDA Developers/Nook Tablet/RECOVERIES/)
a) MLO_u-boot_flashing-boot.rar,
b) CM9-10_CWM_V6.0.1.2_8-16gb_tools_sdcard.zip,
c) CM9-10_TWRP_v2.2.2.0_8-16gb_tools_sdcard.zip
2) Unzip all the above 3 files
3) Rename the CWM file to recovery.img
4) Rename the TWRP file to altboot.img
5) Copy recovery.img and altboot.img and MLO, flashing_boot.img and u-boot.bin to the root of the external SDCard.
6) Download MiniTool Partition Wizard from here: http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
7) Open up MiniTool Partition Wizard and look for your external SDCard
8) Make sure that your boot partition is Primary FAT32 (type 0x0C) with LBA
9) Make this partition Active (MiniTool: Right-click on Partition -> Modify -> Set Active, click Apply )
10) Make sure your Nook Tablet is turned OFF completely. I confirm this by pressing the "n" button and verify screen is blank
11) Insert the SDCard into the Nook Tablet
12) Connect a powered-USB cable (USB cable connected to power adapter) to the Nook Tablet, press the Power button on the Nook tablet, and the Nook Tablet will boot up after a few seconds (assuming that the SD is bootable).
13) Once CyanoBoot comes up, hold the "N" button to get the boot menu from which you can select one of the two recovery programs.
Credit goes to digixmax who helped me out with this procedure!

Yep smokarz, this is the SD that I used.
If you have cwm5 installed, or have it on an sd card; flash this: CWM_v6.0.1.5_emmc
Then from cyanoboot, hold 'n' and choose 'Internal eMMc Recovery.'
Alternatively, I would assume the twrp sd card would allow you to install cm10.
I have done like this topic. But my nook stuck at the screen with a catton box.

Try downloading the copy cwm_6012_sd.img from http://goo.im/devs/meghd00t/cwm6, rename it to recovery.img and copy it to your SD card (together with MLO, u-boot.bin, and flashing_boot.img from the pointer above).

I have the same issue... I have tried this method, as well as the Goo method to boot CWM 6 (on a Team B CM7 NT -- no cyanoboot).
Neither one works.... they both hang going into recovery.
I hope we don't have to go back to stock Nook to get to CM10 from Team B CM7.
Issy
Try steps 1 and 2 (a+b) of the method described at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35669871&postcount=1.

Everybody try this but rename the file to boot.img instead of recovery.img. copy all other files as well
Hit Thanks if I helped you!
