There is an issue afflicting GS2 users where third party signal widgets (like SignalWidgetPro) do not update, or receive info from the op system as to the network signal status when running 2.3.6. Reported to Google here: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=18336. I used to use Mobile Signal Widget Pro, but it does not work now. I can make it read the signal state by going to settings/about phone/status, tap "signal strength," then return to the homescreen, where the app will have updated, but then it is frozen. Anyone having this trouble also? Workaround?
Entropy, is there by chance a kernel fix to this??
Did it work in UCKH7?
Our builds are known for a bug somewhere that causes signal status to not get updated in some places - until this report the most common thing was in the "Cell Standby" details of the battery history screen, it always reports 100% time without signal. It's somewhere in the modem, RIL, or framework. Based on the fact that it updates in certain circumstances, probably a framework bug.
Does it work in CM7? If so, it's a clear indication of a framework bug.

Have not tried a different modem. May play around with that. I am running UnNamed 2.2.1, w/your 1/2/2012 kernel, and my reception in the house is so good with the KK6 that I have just blown off using the 3d party signal app. I came to the GS2 from the Captivate, where I was running Serendipity VII, build 3, with a JV6 modem. With it, Mobile Signal Widget Pro would freeze, but you could unfreeze it by tapping the widget, and hitting an "unfreeze" button.
EDIT: Looking at all the entries in the http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=18336 reports, I see that someone indicated that it is working in CM 7.1, but failing with many modems, across several Gingerbread releases. Posts 116 & 117 in that thread contain some technical info that perhaps developers looking at this page might find useful. Beyond my area of knowledge, at this point.

I think the issue is called "data drop"? Anyways, although I am currently running Axura 2.0.3, it doesn't seem to matter, all 2.2's seem to do it. There will come a point in the day when I try to open something web-based, the 3G activity on the notification bar just does nothing. I suppose rebooting solves it for a while, but going to settings>wireless & network>mobile networks>network operators>search now and then re-choosing T Mobile somehow resets it as well.
-Can somebody explain what the bigger issue is here (why it does this on 2.2)? -Is there some type of a "fix" out there, or one contemplated?
-If there isn't, is there a better way to re-set the data than either of the 2 things above? If re-registering solves it, how does it get un-registered in the first place?
-On 2.1 ROMS (and even stock) I was routinely getting data speeds of between 4-5M. On 2.2 it's hardly ever more than 3. Is this something inherent in 2.2? Seems like we went backwards a bit???
Hmm, I haven't seen it yet. I did experience Airplane mode once on one of the earlier Onyx releases, and the only thing that solved it was to reboot the device.
I have experienced a strange issue with the browsers though, I will get a notification that internet connection is required, but the page loads, I even tried to download and install an alternative browser, and got the same annoying pop-up, mind you I was on 3G, and also used the market to download the app to install it at the same time in the same location.

That also happened to me yesterday. The pages in the browser does load but it's annoying that a pop up message will always appear when using the browser. I'm using Froyo now for almost a week and it happened the first time yesterday. Then i reboot then it's fixed.
I am getting a lot of disconnects too. But it also happens when I am on wifi, sometimes wifi refuses to start and errors out. Onyx 3.1.
Just happened trying to post this - wifi.

Did your area recently have 4G go live? I've had data problems on both mine using froyo and my girlfriends running stock ji6. So I don't feel the froyo roms are the cause. Last night neither of us could get data to work for more than a few minutes at a time.

I too have noticed this on all the 2.2 roms. What I see is the up/green arrow on the 3G icon light up but not the down/orange arrow. I'll try loading stuff up on the web/market and nothing but all the while that green arrow is lighting up. I'm guessing green = upload and orange = download? Idk, but its annoying as hell.

I just came back to the office and was able to use it without the annoying pop-up.
It is strange, the page loads in the background while the pop-up comes up.

Not yet. Philly always gets hit up last. I did some more searching and found this in the early part of the Axura thread:
"The Lib & Bin fixes are for the battery.
I haven't had any problem.
It seems to be a hit & miss type of thing.
He told me That is was probably the same issue that was causing his network location to not work, and that he fixed in with the lib and bins. Just waiting on a release. Everything else seems great in this rom. Runs much smoother that the JPM build."
I have no idea what this means or if it's relevant, but there's something ain't right...
Running Axura. Since 2.2 does not see the hsdpa, I loaded the ji6 modem and all is working great. No data issues at all.

No update on this thread. Anyone got a fix?
I am experiencing the same problem with all the 2.2 ROMs, currently on bionix-v 1.2.1 with KB1 modem.
When it is in the "data drop" condition, sometimes voice calls would not connect and SMS fails to send. But signal status still showing full bars (I live next to the tower).
I'm on an UMTS/HSPA network, so it does look to be a ROM rather than a radio problem. I've tried almost all the available modems - same problem. Yes, I use my phone heavily so there is always one or two apps trying to access the network - and they would be all be stuck (or errors) at the same time.
If I'm tethered, either via 2.2 AP Mode or USB tether, the session is stuck until reset/reboot.
However, the free "WiFi Tether for rooted users" app from the market gets around this condition all the time... somehow :
You can see the bar is all way up, but they still showing 100% without signal.
A definite bug, I believe everyone using 2.3.3 has it, including me. Don't worry, after 6/7hours of usage it disappears.
Regards.
If you go into settings/about phone/status for some reason it stops the bug. It's weird but it works.

lol true, they gone to 55% now, I never saw they go bellow 100%.
Hmm same still in 2.3.4, kh3 and kh4.
I'm running Checkrom 5.0 (2.3.5 with XXKI3) and mine shows 100% time without a signal. My "cell standby" is typically around 10%, so I believe the bug is contributing to battery drain.
I'm wondering if a change of modem might help.
Anyone suffer from this and ultimately found a solution?
I found this bug is already reported at original bug report for android, xperia arc and others have this too... :-( I'm not with link here, but if install open signal maps, from android market, they show the link in startup.
If everyone put a star here, hope google make more atention on this bug.

my better battery app shows wifi running all the time. My battery is getting nuked. When I look at the android menu it says it is the screen sucking up the battery, even though the screen was only on for a short time. Anyone else having issues?
I wasn't having any issues with the 2.3.6 until right there at the end and then it started having the wifi draining issues. I was hoping the wifi issue would have been fixed in the ICS release. I tried doing a factory reset, which didn't help. I uninstalled the att hot spot finder app, didn't help. Is there a way to clear the wifi configs or reset the wifi?
I also notice it will disconnect from the wifi and can't see wifi networks even when hitting the scan button. I have to turn the wifi off and back on to get it to work.
Seems like the same issue

I guess there isn't a fix yet. That sucks.
Have that too. Temporary workaround: Settings -> Wifi -> Menu button -> Advanced -> Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep -> Never.
With that I have great battery life (got 28 hours once).
EDIT: My post is related to ported I9100 ROMs, never used i777 leak.
There is no official ICS - just a leak.

what he said ^^^
Pretty sure this is the same way it's always been that I remember, unless you goto advanced settings it will stay on with the screen off, it shouldn't really kill your battery though. I see minimal impact with my wifi on, I've even read it's better on battery due to less awake time on data polls. The exception to this is if you have an app that goes data crazy when it's on wifi, and keeps the phone awake. Then there was also the issue with the uckk6 firmware, but I don't think that issue is still going on with the ICS ROMs I've tried.
Edit: Was just reading and I guess ATT leak might still suffer from the goofy KK6 bug.
Will the UCPLC5 modem fix it? How do I install the newer modem leak with out making the counter go up?
Also, changing basebands will do NOTHING for wifi-related drain.
Baseband is for voice and cell data - it does NOTHING wifi-related whatsoever.

damn, that sucks. Hopefully the OTA will come out with a wifi fix and soon.
Lately I have been facing a problem.
Any CM10 rom I flash, both WiFi and Data signal icons are grey instead of blue indicating some misbehavior.
For example, WiFi works for browser but not for any other application (Play store, Gmail, Facebook, etc etc).
Data also has problems. It seems to make calls but I don't receive any, as well as sms.
I tried using different recoveries when flashing.
I tried going back to ICS to flash bootloader etc and then go to CM10, problem persists.
After 4-5 tries, it somehow worked but then I had to go back to Samsung rom and now can't get back to CM10.
Any ideas?

Dude, try flashing a different modem!
I have the same issue with with the icons grey (20%) time. Doesn't affect data transmission but I'm curious as it to what it may indicate. Cm10

I flashed a different modem and things are MUCH better. Before it was 98% grey.
Now, like you, it's 20% or less.
Still I am having huge battery drain which I believe is caused by the modem.
Check if "Android OS" is high on the battery (Settings > Battery) list.
Also, betterbatterystats (or free version on XDA).
After 10 hours of boot time, it show 8+ hours were used by : No Data Connection and No or Unknown Signal!

Hello
First of all, sorry of any bad or wrong english, it's not my native language.
I have a very annoying wakelocks problem with my I9100T.
My carrier is Pelephone (Israel), I bought the device about a year and a half ago.
A few months after I got it, I decided to root and to flash a different rom.
I've had many roms since them, mostly stock-based, but I've tried a few AOKPs too.
The problem is basically this:
No matter what rom or what kernel or what modem I install, battery is terrible. With the help of BBS I was able to learn that the cause of this is excessive wakelocks, mostly RILJ, radio-interface, l2_hsic and umts-ipc0. This causes an extreme battery drain, 25%-35% drain in a 7-hour sleep night with wifi/3g/bt/gps/background apps all off and no body touching the device. It is extremely frustrating and makes the phone useless as of the everexisting fear of battery running out.
I've tried tens of different roms, Stock-based (Villain, Neat, Litening, WanamLite, Alliance and a few others I can't remember), AOKP-based (The only one I remember by name is ResurrectionRemix 2.6/2.6.1 and a few JB releases too) across different versions of android.
Tried them with the default kernel, with CF kernel, siyah, phenomenal, dorimanx.
Tried 10+ different modems including 3 extracted from my carrier's official roms (JJKF3, JJKI2 JJLP8).
All of them have the same exact issue.
Only time I remember not having this issue is with old GB roms. CheckROM V4/V6 did not have any battery problems, battery was perfect.
Also Litening rom V6.1 XXKH3, dates as back as aug 11'. Battery was badass there.
I've tried using the phone without restoring anything, tried freezing everything that I don't need, tried even freezing anything that is not necessary for the phone to run (eventually had a phone with no SMS/phone abilities, no play store, no syching, no properly working bluetooth/wifi connections) and still wakelocks occured.
When I first switched to ICS, I also had a 'MediaServer' wakelock, fixed by deleting 'corrupt' files from sd/external. The RILJ, radio-interface, l2_hsic and umts-ipc0 remained and I can't find a conclusive cause/solution.
Fast dormancy is not supported so I always turn it off via *#9900#, or that app for AOKP roms.
I remember a rom in which turning on/off airplane mode would help for a few hours. Then the wakelock returns. Haven't tried it recently, it doesn't quite solve the problem anyway so why bother with it.
I've noticed BBS showing "No or unknown signal" and "No data connection" at 100% time, which is weird.
Recently tried WanamLite/VK based on XXLSJ 4.1.2 leaked stock firmware, same problem.
Finally after some more research here in XDA I've tried to fix RIL/modem mismatch with GetRIL. I have flashed WanamLite 12.8, installed RIL via GetRIL so now it says "RIL/Baseband is matching". A quick look at BBS and battery history still shows RILJ, radio-interface, l2_hsic and umts-ipc0 wakelocks, so I wiped battery history and charged it to a full 100%, currently waiting for BBS to collect data to present here.
I can see that the problem is something about the radio/modem, but since I've tried many of them, I figured it's something that has to do with my device/carrier and not the modem itself. That's why I've tried Pelephone's modems, and recently Wanam's default modem (UHLPH) with matching RIL.
I wanted to try Pelephone's modem with matching RIL but GetRIL tries to install RIL for a different modem since it can't find one for pelephone's, and after a reboot it shows "unknown" baseband and no reception. This isn't important anyway because if it was a 'drainy' modem, it would have been much less drain and would have been better with other modems.
This is clearly something bigger and more persistant, something I'm missing as of my limited knowledge in android modems/system.
I would very much appreciate help with this in any way, ideas of what to try, info about related subjects, perhaps even a cause or a solution.
A friend of mine has the same phone with the same carrier with similar issues (yet a bit different), but the info I'm getting from him is limited and not conclusive. Based on it I can't say it's 100% environmental, nor can I say I'm the only one with the issue.
I'm ready to try anything - ROMs, kernels, modems, apps, tweaks etc.
I will be posting BBS screens and logs here once they'll be more accurate, for now I've attached a 10-min history and BBS screens.
Thank you for any help or assistance.
I have had the exact same issues as you Fast Dormancy, &RILJ on my AOKP Milestone 1 4.1JB. I used the toggle fast dormancy app to fix the first issue. For the RILJ i used the getRIL app, then disabled location services and auto sync for google. Fast dormancy is fixed now. I still get a lot of RILJ wakelocks but the numbers have gone down noticably. Battery performance have significantly improved though. These are the standard fixes i managed to find in the forums. Have you already tried these steps?

Instead of providing the screen shots which can only show details, you should attach the BBS log file. It contains much more information, probably even information you do not consider important for the analyzes of your problem

You did quite a lot but did you ever check your APN settings? Some of the wakelocks in your BBS log could be due to bad/wrong APN settings, so check them very carefully, especially the proxy settings (if any).
Sometimes (in my case) it is even better to create a new, "empty" APN. The only values set in my "empty" APN are: Name, APN, MCC, MNC, Authentication type and APN type. All other settings are not set.

Forgot to mention it in the original post. I always check my APNs since all roms have the wrong internet APN of my provider (It's been updated for smartphones, for some reason most roms still set the old one by default). Usually it also adds some more APNs of a different provider that uses the same network and the same cell towers, so I have to delete them and modify the existing. Internet always worked just fine with the APN I set. I don't really use MMS so I guess that doesn't matter.

CM9.1.0 stable version has a better battery and less l2_hsic wakelocks (wake count is about the same but count and expired count are both 0).
This is the only rom that has any difference in l2_hsic wakelocks except GB roms.
