[Q] Root and s-off without htcdev? - HTC Rezound

I'm sure someone is working on doing it, but any idea on the status of root and soff without HTC unlock tool? I read that HTC logs if u use their tool and that if u try to put it back it'll say relocked therefor voiding everything. With Verizon bring as crappy as they are with root, I don't want some bs issue unrelated to root that could be fixed by warrenty.
Sent from my Mikrunny'd Vivo_w

I was under the impression that there is no way to currently set Rezounds that have S-ON to S-OFF. If that's just been discovered, I'm interested in the instructions as I've already unlocked the bootloader and rooted it.

I'm just not a fan of the unlock tool mainly. I have the inc2 and used revolutionary... Due for an upgrade and really want the rezound, but don't want Verizon to have any more leverage on me more than they already do. They complain about everything and anything if its not their way..

You can temp root and get rid of bloat without unlocking it using CleanTool.

Ahh sweet. That's good to know. That was my biggest complaint.
Sent from my Mikrunny'd Vivo_w

Completely stock this phone has more speed, memory, and less lagg than any of my rooted phones. The bloatware is not a factor. I don't use it so I don't see it on the phone. It will get deleted when I get s-off.

why not unlock it now and remove it yourself?

my problem with that is a lot of the bloatware caches in the memory eating up resources when it doesn't need to.

Er... If you can temp root, what is to stop you from copying the su and superuser.apk files at that point to gain perm root in the way that you do for most other phones?

Perm root was achieved for the phone quite some time ago. The method you mentioned was not possible because the files we re-written when the device was rebooted.
BTW - Holy Thread Resurrections Batman!

Once you have s-off you can flash back to stock and write the security flag and they will never know that it was once unlocked and rooted. Key is getting s-off so your bootloader is relocked.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2

Verizon won't know, but i'm told they don't care. HTC will know because they have records of you doing it in the first place.
So if you don't flash a new image on it it actively deletes the su/superuser files? Lame!

I read in another thread that someone tried and revolutionary does NOT work (yet) with Hboot 1.50.

No it won't work yet.
Yes there are equivalent updates for rooted phones. Check the first couple pages in the dev section and you should find them.

Still don't understand why ppl are using htcs unlock. Alpharevs way is easy, n doesn't void warranty. From what I've read its tough to install a recovery and basically screws you.

Well from the legal standing alpharevs does void warranty just harder to tell. Another reason to figure this out is soon all new evo 3ds sold will already have the hboot 1.50. Most be something otherwise it would be lame as hell to have htc unlock a bootloader that does nothing.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
Htc's method needs to stop being compared to rev's method... Htc only unlocked it. Meaning that the devs will still need to come up with the method for the rest. (s-off and the rest) think of it like the old evo unlocked but still needed dev work for soff and recovery...

woah, wait.....Im not new to flashing and modding, but I am very new to the HTC scene. Do we individually have to unlock the bootloader ourselves? Or is it something the devs do? If we (invidually) dont unlock today do you think that HTC will stop letting us tomorrow? I just dont want to kill my phone.

We individually unlock it. It's super easy. The instructions gives you screen shots of what to do. I just unlocked mine. Took about 5-10 minutes. I'm sure it will be available tomorrow but I didn't waste any time.
Tough to tell whether HTC did this on purpose or not. They very well might pull it later after they realize it/Verizon *****es them out.
I would at least go get the unlock token now, even if you don't want to use it right now.

I'll just wait for the devs to set it up where I don't have to give my phone info to vzw and htc. Might need my warranty some day.

This htcdev.com unlock will allow you to flash custom ROMs, kernels, and recoveries. Sadly radios, hboot/bootloader, and I believe splash screens are a no go. Also, some things must be flashed via fastboot as opposed to recovery. (ie kernels) Considering this phone has some new security tricks not seen before its an ok trade while you wait for s-off IMO. I don't know if it will bring s-off any closer but I doubt it. I can't speak to the warranty situation but I would advise reading all the terms and conditions before proceeding. However consider this.....rooting your phone technically voids your warranty....

Yes perm root is as easy as flashing a recovery then using the recovery to flash the su and busybox binary. Then install superuser from the market and bam permanent root. (or just wait till someone makes a flashable package that will do all that for you.)

We need something like this!

These guys managed to get S-OFF on a few HTC phones by shorting something (That's what it seems to me.) in the chipset...
S-OFF via JuopunutBear Tool
If this could be made to work for us, it'd be a slap in the face for Moto...
this is very hardware specific and an epic hw design fail by htc.... :-(
anyway - who will short his phone first? ;-D

I've owned mostly HTC phones. That's a company that listens to it's customer's. Period.
If you have an HTC Phone, you've got custom Kernels period. The development community is second to none.
That's why i so surprised to come here with my Razr to find out theres..not much.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't S-Off simply allow you root access? And can't we already do that with software? There's no way I'll be tearing apart my phone and start shorting things out just to get it rooted.

Not true. My Rezound has an unlocked boot loader with s-on. S-off is unrestricted access to all partitions of the phone. It's "security/signature" - off, something like that.

Exactly...S-Off allows one to fall back to an older radio and flash only the radio if, for instance, HTC or the carrier pushes a new OTA that has a new radio and makes your phone get a worse signal than before. W/out S-Off you can't just flash back so easily.
ETA: Re-reading my comment makes it seem as that's only S-Off can do but like quoted above it also allows you to flash stuff not officially signed by HTC. Prior to S-Off it was virtually impossible to brick a Rezound. W/ S-Off, you can easily brick a phone permanently.
amazing. If I recall something similar was done to xbox 360 JTAG.

That would be just a wasted effort. Waiting on a different unlock just so your warranty with HTC won't be voided is nonsense. In my lifetime i never, ever used a manufacturer warranty on a cellphone when most people carry insurance.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Admittedly, it would be a waste of time, but it's not completely absurd to this that some people may still want an unlocked bootloader without HTCDev.
In my case, I got my phone set up the way that I wanted it before regaw_leinad got his rooter finished and before flashable modswere out. As of now, I don't want to go through HTCDev unlock and lose my non-backed up data. I didn't wait on the Regaw rooter (or unlock it myself) because I didn't want a new ROM on it anytime soon. Now that flashable mods are out, I wish that I would have unlocked then.
All of that said, I don't consider finding another exploit a priority. Devs shouldn't worry about it when it's done for them.
I'll bite the bullet and unlock it eventually.

[BL] Unlock without HTCDEV
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
The HTC Dev unlock method for the EVO3D was balls. It didn't do the trick and you had to spoof everything through Fastboot (cabled into your computer). That is a much more technical route and more dangerous for noobs. Also the recovery put on didn't always stick.
This time however with the E4GLTE the HTC Dev unlock is great and has provided everything you need to get rooted. There is a nice automated .exe (one single download) that will do the entire process for you. Takes about 10 minutes. Pretty sweet and you even get the super user apps pushed etc.
I've been kinda hesitant to unlock because of the warranty void, but a method like 18th.abn's method makes this noob even MORE hesitant! Unlocking my original evo 4g made this noob very nervous a couple years ago, but I love flashing roms and would really like to see what kind of performance can be unleashed on my new evolte...
There is also a one click method available now.

It is also only rooted by doing HTC Dev Unlock, there still is no root without doing the dev unlock and no S-OFF. Both of which I would prefer over dev unlocking. If I could get root without dev unlocking that would tide me over for quite awhile as they figure out S-OFF so I could at least get some apps transferred with data, greenfiy to save battery, ad blocker, and wifi tether.

I prefer to not deal with the HTC Dev Unlock based on the added steps/difficulties that people have to deal with on our EVO LTEs. I also don't like registering my device that it is unlocked with the manufacturer, it is none of their business if I do it and shouldn't effect my warranty for hardware issues.
