[Q] How to disable 'attwifi' access point? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I have rooted 2.3.6 ROM based on AT&T stock rom. It has 'attwifi' access point which phone tries to connect whenever I walk next to any Starbucks. The problem is that most AT&T access points want me to either login or, at least, click on some stupid check-box in browser. So unless I open browser and do it, I lose my Internet connectivity.
I would like to remove or disable this attwifi access point, but in settings it does not give me any option to do so. I even went as far as trying to remove it from /data/wifi config files but it just gets resurrected.
Does anyone know how to remove or disable this access point?

In wi fi settings there is an option to automatically connect to att wifi network. Uncheck that
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App

Also in your wifi settings find the attwifi network, long press, and select forget network. That worked for me, but I'm not on the stock ROM anymore.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)

Pretty stupid of me! The option to disable auto connect was right in front of me all the time.
Thanks.
It's still would be interesting to know if attwifi can be deleted or changed to regular (forgetable) network. How did they do it, I wonder?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium

you should be able to remove it from the listed access points (ie tell the phone to "forget" it). However I haven't been on the stock rom in a few months now, so i'm not sure how you'd do it. pretty sure if you just go into wifi settings and do a long hold on the access point name it'll give the option to forget it.

I will probably disable mine as well. I noticed it come on in the McDonald's drive through, then nothing was loading.

Wireless Tether

I've never used wireless tether on my phone, but recently tried to. I'm running the Lightning Bolt 2.7 rom and I'm using Wireless Tether for Root Users. I hit "press to start tethering" and everything seems fine. I'm granted SU permission and it displays "press to stop tethering" which leads me to believe that the program is working correctly. I have 3G connection but I'm getting 0.0kb down and up and I'm unable to discover my Eris with any other device (my wife's Eris, PC, or laptop). Am I doing something wrong?

I think I've tried every free wifi tether app in exsistence. I've heard tetherWifi works but I don't want to pay $9 to test it...wish they'd let you try b4 you buy.
Stupid question, but do you have wifi turned on?
If so, there is an option in the settings of wireless tether app that's called enable access-control. If this is checked then you have to grant priviledges to the devices that you wish to connect to your phone. You will have to slide the notifications window down and then select the notification about some device that is trying to connect to your phones wifi. After you select that notification you must grant the priviledge before it will work.
Good Luck!!

I had my wifi turned off but I've tried turning it on and off. I enabled access-control, disabled it, turned bluetooth PAN tether on and off, and I've changed the settings to each of the different LAN network settings. Each time I return to the main page I'm seeing 0.0kB down and up. When I scan for wifi connections with my wife's phone, it never sees my Eris. I've even tried manually adding the wifi network on her phone by entering "AndroidTether" manually as the SSID which is what my phone says the SSID is. It adds it to her wifi networks but says that it is "Not in range, remembered".
Question - When you turn on Wireless Tether, before you connect any devices to it, does your phone display any kB going down or up? Or do you have to actually connect to a device to start pushing a signal?
You might need to start over. Do not mess with anything other than changing your SSID and enabling Access control. Do not use bluetooth for confusion reasons. When you connect with your wireless laptop watch for the access request, slide your notifications and then accept your device. You should be ok. Do not try to complicate things. Just KISS!!
PM me if you have any other questions!
That's my problem. I can't get other devices to even attempt to connect to my phone. The only notification I ever see is "tethering is currently running". I get superuser permission whenever I turn on tethering or change any settings that require it to restart tethering. But I never get any kB down or up and no other device ever recognizes the wifi connection.
Whenever I get an access control notification, it DOES NOT pop up. It is displayed subtly at the top of the phone and I have to slide my finger from the very top of the screen down to the bottom, and then the notification menu fully comes up. I then click the access control notification and check the device that is trying to access wifi through my phone. You have to pay close attention.
You could try to click on the menu button by your home button and select access control, and see if anything tries to attach. You will need to check the box for the device and then accept.
Good Luck!

I understand that I have to view my notifications to see the notification. But there is never one there. No device sees a wifi signal because the phone isn't pushing one. It's my understanding that the app should be pushing a wifi signal that other devices can see and try to connect to. When I'm on my laptop or my wife's phone and I scan for a wifi network I DO NOT see my phone and therefore the device does not attempt to connect to my phone (and there is not a notification if I slide my finger down at the top of my phone to allow a connection).
The question I have is: when you begin tethering (BEFORE ANY DEVICE HAS CONNECTED OR ATTEMPTED TO) do you have kb's going down or up? Someone answering this simple question would help me tremendously!
Thanks!

To answer your question, no. if nothing is connected to the tether then the connection has no need to upload or download info.

What version are you running? I'm not running a froyo rom so I havent been up to date on what works and what doesnt, but have you looked thru all the froyo rom threads to see if anyone else has had a tether problem? On aloysius, I have version 1.6 and it works fine, get info transfer up and down after I connect with my laptop. If you have access control enabled, you will need to authorize your device that is connected, if you can find it in wireless networks.
Is wireless tether bundled with the rom? You said you have tried all versions that you could find but I still have a feeling its the version of wireless tether you have, but it could also be that all versions you found are only compatible with 2.1.
Heres all I could find:
Wireless Tether
I'm on KaosFroyo v24. So I tried opening wireless tether and running it. I started it and did a wifi scan on my wife's phone. Still nothing. I got on the laptop and ran about a half dozen scans and it finally saw and connected to my phone, at which point data was streaming up and down. I had just assumed before since no data was streaming and I couldn't connect initially that something was wrong.
I still can't connect with my wife's phone (which was what I used most for testing) but I got it working.
Thanks to everyone for your help!!!

[Q] Noob needing help - root/tether

I bought my first smartphone ever last month to give you an idea how new I am. My last phone was a Touch that I had set up to allow tethering... but I had to upgrade my phone. I need my tethering back, and I prefer not going through a program like pda-net.
So, I read that if I root the phone, I'd have tethering back. I used Revolutionary. I backed up my phone. I installed clockwork and superuser. I think I did everything I'm supposed to do. However, when I plug the phone in (I prefer USB tethering) and click the "Internet Connection Mode", I still get the message I need to subscribe for $20 a month, and I don't get a connection. Do I need to do something else to enable wired tethering? Do I have to install a 3rd party program as well? Or is it that I haven't installed a custom ROM/Kernel/Radio/Whatever would be the right thing?
The phone is a Thunderbolt. HTC Sense 2.1, Software #2.11.605.5, Android version 2.3.4.
I really don't have much of an idea what I'm talking about, so if anyone has any fairly easy answers, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help.
Find my WiFi tether thread and follow instructions

Do what lantern says. Just rooting does not unlock the built in internet sharing apps. You need to get the apps that do what you want now. I.e. wireless tether, you might like wired but wireless is very nice.
Sent from the nearest cellular tower.
Grnlantern79,
Well, I've tried following your instructions on the other thread. I downloaded the .apk you had listed.
That took me an hour to figure out how to install... didn't know I needed to install another program to install something from a memory card.
As for these instructions:
"Mine did not work until I changed the device profile to Thunderbolt in settings.
Then I changed a few other settings such as
Force WiFi driver reloading (check) *has worked for some*
Routing fix (check) *most important one*
Disable wake-lock (unchecked) -> *this is why you lose connection after your screen turns off*"
I can't for the life of me find where any of these are. I've spent a good amount of time trying to find them, and just can't seem to find a settings section.
Then I tried Autotethering and WiFi Tether from the Market. It doesn't matter which I use, when I hit "Internet Connection Mode" the Verizon $20 to use message pops up. I tried on two computers, and both will see something there, but not connect to the internet. I tried connecting without selecting that, but it still didn't work (had it on "charge only").
I'm very frustrated... I've spent hours working on this and don't feel like I'm making any progress. I appreciate you attempting to help via that other thread, but I'm lost. If you have any way of giving me a more detailed explanation of how to get this to work, I would greatly appreciate it.
If I just install some new ROM and not work off the rooted stock one I have, would they come with the tethering block from Verizon disabled?
Thanks for any advice.
Telaeus
When you open WiFi tether press menu the soft key at bottom of your phone, the settings will pop up.
Device profile = thunderbolt
Routing fix = check box
Enable access control
Now I can tell you are not tech savy so this is where my help stops. If you can't find the settings in a program after an hour, you should think about return your smart phone for a feature phone.

Well, thanks for trying to help then Grnlantern79. I had misunderstood where to look for the settings. Figured it was settings on the phone itself I was changing to bypass the Verizon Internet Connection thing.
I changed all the settings in WiFi tether. Still no luck. The computer recognizes the network... I set it to Public. It's listed as HTC Remote NDIS Based Device. However, there is no Internet or Network access. I'm not putting it to "internet connection mode" since the Verizon popup has never gone away... leaving it on Charge only.
If anyone else is willing to try and assist me, I would appreciate it. I fully admit to not being smartphone savvy. However, I'm not incapable as Lantern implies... I've built my own computers since 1993, and can diagnose and do pretty much anything hardware related. Unfortunately, smartphones are different, and I'm still getting up to speed on all the terminology and uses of them.
So, thanks Lantern... but is anyone else able to figure out why this isn't working?
Thanks for any help.

[Q] Wireless Tethering Issues

Hello all I am paying for a wireless tethering plan yet the mobile hotspot seems to time out every 12 seconds. It will lode a web site usually half way before my data just drops to 0 kb/s and I have about 4 bars of lte. I don't know if there is a way to fix this, I have tried turning it on and off and rebooting but nothing seems to help this issue. When it stops responding to my computer the device name changes to a * and then it will not send data anymore. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
I'm running into the same problem as well. I can tether through USB just fine but whenever I use the mobile hotspot my internet starts to timeout. I'll be lucky if I can go 5 minutes without it timing out.
Are either of you using Tasker? I had a very similar problem where I was using Tasker to determine when I was home by toggling Wifi to check for my home network and then setting sound profiles. I found that tasker would toggle the wifi which caused my wifi tether to stop working. It would look like it was on, but wouldn't send data. I fixed it by having tasker stop toggling wifi when running my wifi tether app..
Any smart action profiles set? Turn it off & see if it continues.

Mmh, I've got the EU RAZR (don't have to pay to route my connection where I want) and the Wireless Tethering is working flawlessly (HSPA+).
Maybe they haven't used the same software OR they've used the same software but there's a problem when LTE is ON.
Anyway, the EU RAZR is about to get an OTA...and VZW one should as well.

You may be on to something here. I'm going to try to wifi tether on 3G to see what happens.
I'm finding tethering is better with 3g than 4g for some reason.

Setting the data connection to 3G didn't help. It took a little bit longer to time out this time but it still happened.
So I kind of figured out why I'm getting timed out, but I'm no closer to a solution.
When I tether through USB, 4G will stay connected. Nothing wrong with it.
When I tether through WiFI, I time out because the 4G connection drops after a few seconds and when 4G is re-established. The 4G connection does not have data, even though it says 4G. I cannot access data on my phone or on any tethered device.
When I turn off the mobile hotspot, then my 4G will drop again and when 4G is re-established, then data starts to work again.
edit:
Maybe I have a faulty phone. I'm going to try to exchange it this weekend.

I have similar problem connecting a Kindle Fire to a Verizon provisioned hotspot. Web browsing doesnt work but music, videos, apps, and books seem to work. I haven't had a chance to check but on the Thunderbolt we had a similar issue and it turned it to be bad dns server for the wifi connected devices.
I don't have the ability to set a custom DNS server on the Fire so I can't check this at the moment. I'll report back when I can verify if this is the issue with a laptop.
I have a EU razr and I also have problems with Wifi tether - my computer can connect fine but I get "limited connectivity" and no Internet access. Worked without issue on SE Arc with same provider and APN settings.
What other Hotspot apps are out there that hopefully work better?
Same issue.
From what I have been reading on other forums this is a known issue that Motorola is working on and the ETA for the fix is no more than two weeks. We'll see.
This seems to work
I tried the steps below and haven't had a drop in the last 15 minutes. I'm not a network guy so I don't know the reasoning behind why this worked for me, but so far so good. If you're not comfortable messing with the Registry, then don't try this. I used a spare PC to test it first.
Change the Default Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) Size Settings
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NdisWan\Parameters
3. Add a Protocols subkey (if it does not already exist). To do so:
a. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
b. Type Protocols, and then press ENTER.
4. Add a 0 (zero) subkey to the Protocols subkey. To do so:
a. Click the Protocols subkey that you created step 3.
b. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
c. Type 0 (zero), and then press ENTER.
5. Click the 0 subkey that you created in step 4.
6. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
7. In the Value data box, type ProtocolType, and then click OK.
8. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
9. In the Value data box, type 800, make sure Hexadecimal is selected under Base, and then click OK.
10. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
11. Type PPPProtocolType, and then press ENTER.
12. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
13. In the Value data box, type 21, make sure Hexadecimal is selected under Base, and then click OK.
14. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
15. Type ProtocolMTU, and then press ENTER.
16. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
17. Under Base, click Decimal, type the MTU size that you want in the Value data box, and then click OK. ( I used 1400)
18. Quit Registry Editor.
19. Restart your computer.
On the Razr: Open Mobile Hotspot Settings-> Configure Mobile Hotspot. At the bottom, change the Client (DHCP) start address to 172.168.20.10

Any updates to this? Having the same problem and can't seem to make it work. Don't have a rooted RAZR so can't try the download link.
Hey! I used to have problems for a while with my tethering as well and ANY device I connected just wouldn't have access to the internet. I tried a lot of different apps, methods etc., to get it working and nothing seemed to work. But one day, I tried my own thing. I simply connected my device via wifi tethering (I don't use USB, but this should still work), and then, after it was connected, I simply opened my phones web browser to make sure I could access a data connection in the first place. And lo and behold, my tethering is working just fine!
So to put simply, what you should try is:
1) Connect your device via tethering (I used wifi, but usb should work too!).
2) Make sure you actually have a data connection! And then, open the web browser on your phone, and go to a web page (I just go to google )
3) Enjoy your tethering.
I hope this works for everyone, and not just me! XD
The last update from verizon fixed this issue.

Download the latest version here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Then place it on your SDcard and install. Make sure your phone will allow unknown sources by going to settings > application settings > and check unknown sources.
After the app installs open it up. Hit the menu soft key and select settings. In the settings, set the "Device-Profile" to Samsung Galaxy S2 and then set the "Setup-Method" to Netd (master). This will somehow enable the built-in mobile hotspot, which will give you infrastructure mode, which pretty much all computers like.
I also have MSS clamping checked. I dont have the Routing Fix checked. You can change the SSID and security settings if you want. Now, exit out of the settings and start tethering by touching the symbol in the middle of the screen. Now get on to your computer and find the network. Everything should work from there.
Good luck.
One more option
I just tried with "open garden wi-fi tether" on Stock with Jokers Higpro kernel and it works just fine.
If I remember proper when I ran the stock kernel tethering would connect but not transfer data. Kinda sound like what your problem is.

[Q] Not able to "unforget" WiFi

By mistake I have clicked on "forget" on my wifi connection under the wireless settings. The problem I have now is that I simply can't revert this Forget behavior.
I am using B&N stock android version but rooted.
Anyone has any idea on how to revert that?
I do believe the easiest way would just be add the information back in, most of the time once a setting like that is gone, it's gone for good.
but do you happen to know if there is some kind of list of "forgotten" ssids in the system where i could go there and delete the line?
because i dont want to have to change my router ssid just because of the nook (since everything else uses that wifi name)
I don't know about a list of forgotten names, but I know there is a list of saved names, and it can be manually edited. I can't find the exact file name right now, but you might be able to dig around with your file explorer and find it (that's how I initially discovered it).

Under Settings -> Wireless one can see all the WiFi connections within range right? So by mistake I have clicked on my connection and selected "Forget" instead of "Connect".
I am trying to find a way that I can recover the forgotten WiFi SSID. Either using the UI or some text editor to do so.
I am using a rooted version of B&N 1.4.2 Android.

Have you tried turning WiFi off and then back on? Normal behavior for Android (and the Nook user manuals seems to confirm this) would be for your tablet to scan for nearby WiFi access points when you activate WiFi. If you aren't using a hidden SSID, you should be able to see your access point's SSID and start a connection to it.
