I used HTC Super Tool v3 to root my HTC Hero-S and it said "Rooted." I used root checker and it said I am not. I do have Kingdom HBOOT and can access fastboot through it but still cannot delete bloatware, etc. I am very new to rooting and have only been playing with the idea for about 2 months. I was rooted once already before and everything worked just fine.
EDIT: Forgot to ask a question...Can anyone throw an idea my way? There seems to be limited resources for rooting the Hero-S

Almost a month ago I bought an HTC Evo 3D (My first android phone) and I want to root it but I have a few questions before I do so.
1. Do I have to back up everything on my phone before I actually root the phone? I know it's always a good idea to back up before doing things like this but I really want to know is in the process of rooting my phone will I lose everything (Contacts or anything that's not on my SD card)?
2. What ROM should I use keeping in mind I want to retain the 3d functionality of my phone? Alls I really want right now is a ROM without CIQ but still has HTC Sense3.0.
Please note I have researched this online and came across a few articles on how to actually do the rooting (here and here). I am thinking I don't want to use HTC's method of unlocking the bootloader.
My phone's info:
Carrier: Sprint
Phone: HTC Evo 3D (duh)
Hboot version: 1.5

Well if your Hboot 1.5 then your stuck with HTC dev method nothing you can do about it unless you wanna wait a year for another method.
I never backed any of my stuff up since after you root no point in it. If you wanna unroot you need to have the stock recovery zip which is easy also the stock PC86IMG.ZIP and fastboot oem lock and your unrooted
Not hard to do....
There is really no need to backup all of your stuff to root, as you will not lose anything. I recently rooted my 3d which is hboot 1.5 using the htc dev method, (which as said is the only method currently for hboot) and found it rather easy to follow. Although this doesnt give you the highly sought after "s-off" but it does give you complete root access to your phone, the ability to use apps that require root access and install custom roms/kernels Definitely install a custom recovery and go ahead and do a nandroid backup there, that will backup your entire phone. MAKE SURE you do that before flashing any custom roms/kernels.
As for suggesting a rom I can't really suggest one right now. I have only been researching/using evo3d roms for a few weeks now and to keep functionality the only way is to stay with a sense rom, as most aosp roms are not quite there in terms of wifi/4g/camera/3d capabilities etc. There are plenty of sense roms out there with removed bloatware, and custom themes. Just browse the appropriate development subtopic for your carrier and check out some of the threads listed, most of the devs will be there to answer any questions you may have. But just check a few out, and if you dont like them, no biggie just restore or move on to a different rom. happy rooting.

If you are on hboot 1.5, the htcdev method WILL factory reset your phone, meaning you will lose everything. So only you can answer that question, if you dont want to backup your data, are you ok with losing everything?
2. What ROM should I use keeping in mind I want to retain the 3d functionality of my phone? Alls I really want right now is a ROM without CIQ but still has HTC Sense3.0.

As you are new here, you might not know that you don't have to flash a rom when rooting. You can just stay on the stock rom if you want to, and enjoy the benefits of being rooted while on the stock rom. But if you want to flash a rom without CIQ, most of the roms in the dev section already removed it, and the ones with sense 3.0 are labeled so in the titles. As to which one, well that's the beauty of rooting, there is no "best rom" for anyone. Just make a backup of your current rom, and flash a new one. If you dont like it, restore your backup.
I am thinking I don't want to use HTC's method of unlocking the bootloader.

Well there is no other way of rooting hboot 1.5.
Just do it.

Thank you
I want to thank all of you for your quick and meaningful responses!
i'm not sure how to root on hboot 1.5(if thats what you have) or how to flash with it. but personally, i like using mikrunney v1.06 as my daily rom. everything functions correctly (except 4g i think) but that's not big deal.
and with backing up, everyone else answered that already

Thanks for the info, yes my hboot is indeed 1.5.
Hey sorry ahead of time if this question has been answered already. I actually searched and haven't found anything.
I really don't care about changing roms or anything like that. I just want to root my device to tether and run other apps that require rooting. But I do not want to lose my data.
I know for the transformer prime I was able to. But I can guess that devices are different.
Thanks in advance for any info.

Follow the steps and you will have your access.
You can also try just doing the HTCDEV method and downloading joeykrim's root checker(to verify root) and chainsdd's superuser(to enable superuser permiasions) from the market. Oh yeah, you'll need a tethering app.

Thanks. Im going to try right away.
*Hey I dont mean to second guess your suggestion, but I was reading the one you suggested and it said HTC unlock will factory reset my phone. I am looking for a root method which allows me to root without a factory reset.*
No, you're right. HTCDEV method does do a wipe.
Try this temp-root solution.

Hey I looked at it and I don't think that's what I was looking for. Thanks for your help though. Much appreciated.
hello, ive looked to
im trying to do a friends phone with hboot 1.5 and s-on
when i had my evo 3d, i definately stayed away from HTC's unlock method (i used the non-htc ones by the devs)
is there another way to root hboot 1.5 rather than using HTC to unlock? (i dont care if the phone needs to be wiped/factory reset)
You could also back up your stuff w mybackup pro... If you temp root first it will allow you to save app data too

So my girlfriends Legend has slowed to a near stop, she wasn't interested in rooting it before but now It's just unusable she's changed her mind.
So I was going to use htcdev to unlock the bootloader and root with HTCroot.
Once I have root can I install busybox and superuser straight from the market?
Can the stock kernal be overclocked?
And finally does the stock Rom run ok when debloated and overclocked?
I have read a lot of information but a lot of it seems outdated now htcdev exsists.

To answer a few of those q's no u can't over clock stock rom
Depending on which info your talking about, unless its rootung , then I wouldn't exactly say that the info was outdated all the principles are the same really.
One of the biggest killers for me was the stock Facebook rubbish getting it of my phone was a wonderful feeling
If u use HTC supper root tools you will already have busy box and super user, can't be rooted without them.

If you are gonna use HTCDEV to unlock, then follow these steps and your gf's Legend will be re-born
1. Follow HTCDEV instructions to the T
2. You will be asked to create a folder, viz Android(similar to ADB in your c:\)
You need this to use fastboot to place unlock token to your phone. When you
done, Clockworkmod recovery img in the same folder and use fastboot for the
recovery img.
3. Once you have CWM recovery, place Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip in your
sdcard and installed it.Download busybox install from market and install
busybox 1.94 or whatever version u need.
You are rooted
4.Download this(http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=493093&d=1295359342) kernel and flashed it with CWM, and you can overclock or flash ICS or whatever, don't worry about S on once you are HTCDEV unlocked. One thing though, if on stock, you won't be able to use Darktremor A2sd script, well not unless you use his guide for developers, which is quite easy to follow. You can purchase Titanium backup pro or root uninstaller to uninstall apps in don't want, somewhat like customising your own rom
I have done 2 Legends this way so I can safely say it works. Enjoy
Thanks for this! Will be trying tomorrow, just got ICS on my EVO 3d lastnight, so still playing around with that.
Only thing that concerns me is uing adb, I've got away with not using with my other devices so far

I used your method and it worked great, I didn't flash whatever this is;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=493093&d=1295359342??
I just wiped everything and flashed the ICS Beta. It works great for a beta, really impressed. Confused why it can't find my wireless network though, loads come up in the network list, just not mine, all my other devices connect fine...
And the legend connected to my parents network ok, just dosnt see my network at home....
Also my girlfriends happy she can finally use her phone!

Relevant rooting question:
OK. So I'd finally like to root my HTC Legend in order to install Cyanogenmod. But I'm still a bit afraid to do so.. Warranty issues etc.
But if I want to install Cyanogenmod the easy way, this is what I have to do right?
1) Use the official Unlocker to unlock the bootloader
2) Use HTC Supertool V3 to root the phone
3) Install Cyanogenmod
This is correct right? Is there anything that could go wrong? (Well, of course there is, but I mean: Is this relatively safe and fool-proof to do?)
I'm all very new into Android and especially rooting, so...
Thx.
Just use HTC dev to unlock, then do the steps listed above, install clockworkmod and super user, then you can flash any Rom you want by booting into recovery mode.

havent really messed with rooting sense i got my htc incredible about 2 yrs ago so a little rusty on all this stuff...
got my rezound about a month ago, unlocked the bootloader, installed amon ra with "Rezound_All-In-One_Kit_v2.0" and got titanium back up to to freeze and remove vz nav, kindle, blockbuster, facebook and others. well i recently got the notice to download the ics update from my rezound... i was at work and didnt think i could install it unlocked and with a custom bootloader, but i figured what the hell. i got a error talking about how it couldnt find vz nav along with a error code that i googled and reaffirmed my original thought. got home re-locked the bootloader, installed the stock recovery and re downloaded ics update on my phone and got the same error about not finding vz nav. so feeling really dumb i unlocked my bootloader again not knowing i would loose all my data :,( and re installed amon ra hoping i could get back into titanium to unfreeze all i could but am now having problems getting root access, i still have superuser and am not sure whats wrong. may have already lost my mind. thanks for the help
ps sorry for the grammar
I'm trying to temp root my phone so that i can do a backup with titanium backup before I permanently root my phone with HTCDev. How can I temp root my phone. All the methods i am seeing seem to be old and dont work with my hboot and software version. Here are my specs.
HTC EVO 3D Sprint CDMA
HBOOT - 1.58
Software Version - 2.89.651.2 71ORD
What is my best option.
Thanks,

You can try this if you haven't already, but it was written for GB not ICS, and it sounds a little "iffy" to me.
Might want to consider MyBackup (Pro) which doesn't require root for the standard backup.

Thanks for the reply. I have already tried that but to no avail. I'll give My Backup Pro another try. Ive used it before and there was something that it did kinda funky and i cant remember what it did.
After temp root any suggestions on how to permanent root my phone with my specs. I checked out HTCDev but it seems kinda iffy that it would work with my specs. My main reasons to be rooted is so i can install apps for rooted devices (ie. titanium backup, screen capture ect.) and maybe down the road get into messing around with custom ROM's. I would appreciate any advice and step by step procedure on how to do this since I am new to all this stuff.
Thanks,
HTC dev works on hboot 1.58 as does the wire trick. After temp rooting to backup:
1. Unlock with HTC dev.
2. push a custom recovery
3. Install super user to give you root
4. (optional for what you want) Do wire trick to get s-off.
A word of warning: my phone just bootlooped when I temp rooted. Not a big deal, but I lost my data.

Ok i just have a few questions.
First
What/Where is a good "custom recovery" and is this for?
Second
How do i install super user?
Third
Where can I get good instructions on how to complete step 4? And what does "s-off" allow me to do?
What does bootlooped mean?
Sorry for all the questions i just want to be sure i know whats going on before i get into this and possibly mess my phone up. I prefer videos tutorials so if you have any good suggestions that would be great. Tutorials that work with my phones specs.
Thanks,
