I have just rooted by galaxy s2 using cf root and odin 1.85.
my current firmware is XWKI4, reading through post particularly rooting methds (sroot and cf root), peopple are advised to download firmware which closes matches that of the stock rom, is this correct?
does it matter what kerner (or firmware) the custom rom comes with or does the curtom rom for me has to be xwkI4?
also, phones for my wife so list of most stable rom would be appricated.

No you are fine...You are rooted now so this is were the fun begins. Download a rom that you like and make sure you use recovery to flash it. Before you flash a rom make sure you make a backup of the current one you are on and make sure you back up your applications using Titanium backup. Then go ahead and flash a rom of your choice. Most roms always have a guide in the first page of their thread. Read it carefully and if you have to read it like ten times do so..That way you get a better understanding and at least you know what you are flashing.
Rom there are so many to choose from..Either Checkrom V4 that has a kitchen app or Foxhound. Also if you go in the Android development there are so many other roms there that you can flash...But like i said backup and do your reading first..Happy flashing
thanks for the quick response
I was thinking of trying checkrom or villianrom

Both roms are great. Try them both my friend you are not losing anything..That is the great thing about flashing roms..Try both for a few days and take it from there.
hello,
Well your phone is rooted now, so try what ever rom you like!
Look for the rom that's Best rated (4 or 5 stars).
If you want to stay on ginger, then what you mentioned are good amongst others.
If you like the iPhone look, then Try also the Miui ginger roms, DT Miui ginger is good).
Now if you like to go ICS then I recommandé you the Wanamlite (version 7.2 now), but put in mind that ICS is in 4.0.3 LP2 beta version, therfore still facing some problemes Yet. But it is worth to try.
One big advice though : in All cases, do your backup before, then wipe every thing from the reboot recovery CWM.
I hope this helps.
Best rom for you is the one you test yourself & decide works great for you. A Rom/kernel that works well for me might not work well for you (phone components slightly different, different phone setup, different usage).
Make sure you back up your EFS as well. Best way is with k-tool

It's displayed alongside each thread/ROM in the Development forums. Not sure I'd set too great a store by those though. CheckROM is very reliable.
I wouldn't go anywhere near ICS for your wife - very high maintenance. (The ROM, that is, never met your wife...)

I have to agree with Gustopher here. Go for checkrom and then just install the ICS theme by Vertumus and your wife will a very happy lady.
ICS remix- resurrection, the best ics rom in the sgs2 at the moment baby

Everyone of us use Rom Manager. Koush single handedly gave us an incredible and safe recovery. His app Rom Manager and Clockwork Recovery is something EVERY rooted Vibrant has/should have.
For those of us who flash ROMs, it would be nice if the ROMs were supporting Rom Manager. For those who have not used this on other phones, this is what I mean:
On my other devices, I can go to Rom Manager and click on "Download Rom" to find a new ROM (ie switching from Bionix to Auxora and AOSPish, etc).... OR... I could click on "Check for Rom Updates" right from RM, and NOT have to go check websites (especially now that most developers have their own sites where updates may be available sooner).
I found the instructions Koush gave for adding ROMs to Rom Manager.. it seems very straight-forward. You can check them out here if you are interested.
So, I ask... am I crazy for wanting this?
Seems like the developer who does this is going to open up his/their ROM to a LOT more people just due to convenience.
If people were going to go from eclair > froyo > eclair I guess people would need the stock kernels unless the ROMs had a kernel... which is a whole new point.
Not sure why Rom Manager does not backup the kernel.... that would make things a LOT easier too. Maybe @Koush can make it happen one day.
I've wondered the same thing.it's a dead feature at the moment because no roms are supported yet...

Yeah, I've wondered the same thing. I helped a friend root his Droid Incredible and in the ROM Manager there were several different ROMs available for download, and it was really conveninent. It makes me a bit sad that ours has nothing.
Probably because these ROMs are beta. Probably because they are not completely safe to upgrade without people going to the forums. Probably because the devs want to promote their forums.

I don't buy that. On the Droid Incredible CM had their latest beta versions in there with no problem. So did others.
I exclusively use ROM Manager to keep me up to date with the latest CyanogenMod Nightlies...I have tried other ROMs but have yet to find anything as up to date as CM6 Nightly

Master is on board. He has sent everything that's needed to Koush.
So... Looks like all of us Axura lovers are in luck. If you aren't on his froyo, I suggest trying it!
Well... Master sent in everything for Axura, but it is not showing up yet.
I wonder what needs to happen now?
For those Devs that do not want to subscribe to that you could at least create a link or two and let others download via it.

Well, Master has supposedly sent everything to Koush to make it happen... I think Koush just needs to activate it? I really am not certain how the process gets moving once all the code is done and submitted.
Perhaps this will not take place until .5 is released and it's not on Koush's end??
REGARDLESS... this is going to be an amazing new feature for those who like to flash ROMs. Big props to Master for making it happen so fast. He won me over with his ease at adding this to his plate.
fyi, koush responded. I think this is something we can have for Master's ROMs soon... here is hoping.

Ok so I just got a brand new Galaxy s2 FREE from Vodafone AU... well not exactly, after crap reception and a $500 bill direct debited from my account for excess data I never used, they gave it to me outright. Bribe 3 months before my contract expires I guess.
Firstly I'm NOT a NOOB been flashing for 18months on my old SGS1 and do know a bit.
-So I started with a stock GTi9100T phone...
NOTE: After much google action I discovered that the GTi9100T is IDENTICAL to the standard SGS2 as far as I can tell except that is has a lower SAR output. Unlike the i9100G there are NO T-specific hardware or firmware differences (except possibly the modem or trivial rom settings) and no separate sources either.
-Then I flashed a CF-rooted stock kernel (KF2 i think) matching the stock firmware via Odin.
-Next I downloaded Foxhound Batista 0.2 ICS XXLPH based rom and flashed via CWM recovery. I came in two parts and I must have missed the correct seequence because the rom bootlooped.
I decided to format every partition except sdcard and flash CF-root kernel via Odin again.
-This time Foxhound flashed sucessfully.
-Now I did forget to backup my IMEI (facepalm) easy to do when you have a FREE SGS2 in your hands. IMEI survived fine but the Serial number in setting> phone is "Unkown"
-Now my questions are:
-Does the serial number listed as unknown cause any phone-identity problems like a missing/corrupt IMEI?
-Can I fix this with .md5 backups in my EFS folder or any other way easily?
-Is it caused by still having GB bootloaders running ICS?
-will a sammy stock firmware flash (3-file low-level + pit/repartion) fix it like IMEI issues?
-Is is something to do with having GTi9100 rom running on a GTi9100T device?
Thanks in advance peoples, happy to join your area of XDA
Edit: So I finally found a discussion touching on this in the CM9 thread but it reveals very little:

You need new ics boot loader, ics stock ROM to fix that serial....
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
I've never used a custom rom that does show the serial number in settings, and I only used stock for a week when I first got my phone & don't remember if it showed up using stock.
Either way, it's irrelevant. What possible issue could arise whether settings/about phone showed your serial number or not ? As long as your IMEI is good/not showing the generic '0044' one, it's all good.
People getting in a tizz about nothing on here as per usual.
Custom kernels than might lose it again
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
It's the new ICS feature, it shows serial in about phone, and yes it does nothing, but it sure bug when you see unknown.... So update to latest stock and it will be fixed. Easy. As I said, custom kernels again can make it unknown.

Hello, I'm starting get great interest in this whole flashing/rooting thing on the galaxy, but am not sure if the S2 or S2 4G as in can they both fully work in flashing an what not or does the S2 have more ability to do stuff to it?
Sorry I'm really new to all this and this forum, so I'm quite sure if this is posted in the right spot an what not, Thanks!
EDIT: I'm in Australia an they would be unlocked models, I thought I might put that in there not sure if changes things, Thanks!
Get a I9100 or I9100T rather than the 4G version;
1) At the moment there's only one 4G network in Australia, Telstra's, and 4G coverage isn't fantastic in a lot of places yet.
2) There's bugger all (zero ?) custom firmware available for this phone, so you'll be stuck with stock. As far as we know, firmware for the I9100/T won't work on this phone.
Locked or unlocked makes no difference to anything, apart from the ability to use the phone on any network, obviously.
Thank you so so much for the reply it really helped! I'll get i9100
Probably this weekend but I don't think I can cause of Easter!
Time to Learn how to actually root the phone now.
No worries
Best bit of advice I can give you is read until your eyes fall out. If you understand the process of whatever you're going to do to your phone inside out & follow instructions, it's a really hard phone to mess up/brick. The chances of bricking it increase exponentially depending on how little regard you pay to instructions.
Stickies & CFRoot thread are good places to start.
Good luck

I think I know how to root the phone now
Now I'm at the hard bit of picking the right rom/kernel thing
Once you've rooted the phone, trying roms/kernels is a snap because you can make/restore a backup of a previous setup in CWM in a few minutes. Makes life a lot easier
Important thing is you're doing the research before you get the phone, and that's a good thing
True true, I can't wait to try it all out
help needed
i don't think i can root my galaxy s2, can't seem to find my kernel version thing to root and install CWM info below
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version: i9100xxki4
Kernel Version: [email protected]#2
Yes you can. Go back to the CFRoot kernel and have another look. There's a matching kernel there you can use. Before you do tho, have a read of the bit in that thread that starts with "Help ! Which file do I use ?".
Read that bit very carefully.
Thanks, I still can't seem to find the right one, I'm either blind or stupid I'm leading towards both
Found It, i'll let you know if i brick
Got it successfully rooted thank you so much for all you help if you had a donate button I'd click it, just really thank you so much, I'd try custom rom but i need to get a memory card

If you did, you'd have already done a backup by now. All the info you need is in the links I gave you last week or whenever. You just have to look for it. Or do Google searches with XDA appended to your search terms.

You're on siyah kernel. If you wish to keep your current kernel, you can install a cm10 rom released before 02 oct or JB ROM that hasn't used the latest mali drivers since siyah hasn't incorporated those yet.
The good news is you won't hard brick your phone..siyah is a safe kernel.
Look around the various ROM threads in the android development section, see if one catches your fancy and enquire if its compatible with siyah..since recommending ROMs goes against forum rules.
Also, most ROMs will include a kernel installation while installing them. Long story short, if you aren't insistent on keeping your current kernel you can flash pretty much any JB ROM built for the i9100. Be careful not to install any ROM for a different variant of the phone.
If you have any questions you can ask here or feel free to PM me.

Siyah isn't a ROM, its a kernel. What you've posted are both ROMs. The first will run on your current kernel, the second will install the CM kernel. So you can try either one of the two. Look through at least the last couple of pages and see what others think on both forums. That might give you a better idea if its right for you. Else you can always flash the other one.
Good luck!

Your first picture isn't showing up, the second has nothing to do with the question. If your friend is on stock mdk and is rooted he/she needs to freeze/delete sdm.apk and flash a custom recovery. Then they can make a backup and never ota, just flash roms as you would on any phone with an unlocked bootloader. And as for never losing rootedness, that's not the issue. It's updating the bootloader that is.
