RE: [Q] Best apps for a college student?
I havent found a good thread in any general section addressing the best apps for college/university students, for phones and tablets alike.
Here's a link to a thread from the Transformer Prime http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437113
One of the things I'm looking for specifically is a pdf annotation app with the zoom feature from the app Antipaper. Im currently using ezPDF but I feel like there has to better options.

I'm with ya buddy !
As a student who tired of old fashion pages and folders I have been using my laptop for a while.. Unfortunately I couldn't use it so long because of the poor supportness of software and apps..
for your windows I recommend the hand write recognizer "Math Input", its very great.. I wish there was a way to write in it by connecting tablet or smartphone (there is a way I just never figured how)
For your PDF I recommend Documents To GO.
its from the same family of Word to GO, PDF to go and others..
I also have the ez but I found this one better..
Also depends on your subject, "engineer calculator" I found once to be nice..
Hope that helps some how..

thanks, ill give documents to go. im taking chemistry so good hand drawn annotation is MUST. i really like how you can quickly resize any annotations you do.

No one else got any suggestions?

[Q] Note-taking app

Hey guys,
I've been searching the android market and app-brain for a good note-taking app. I can't find one, so I've started writing one.
The basic problem with most of the ones on the market is that they all are just text input apps.
That makes a lot of sense on a cell-phone, but with the nook an app that was more like a notebook would be much better.
Before I start anymore work on it, though, I thought I would ask if anyone had found a great one. Thanks ahead of time!
there are a few ok options, but definitely not great or notebook like. if you have a good concept, continue it, as none really do the job well enough yet
i use blackink, jorte, and ive been working with a few notepad options, but none are nearly 10/10 quality. 6-7 at best
Check out Springpad in the market. I like it.
I haven't found a good one either. At CES I believe Asus was showing off a note taking app for their android tablet that sounded interesting. Not sure what they called it though. Maybe a search for that could yield some good ideas.
Sent from my LogicPD Zoom2 using XDA App
A decent note taking app would convince me to pick up a stylus. I write music and poetry and Evernote is great for keeping track of ideas before I lose them, but it is lacking a stylus option. It would be a good template as far as interface goes.
Looking forward to see what you come up with. =)
I'd love to see something more notebook-like, ruled (choice of either horizontal lines or grid), the ability to "flip" pages back and forward... it would be nice to be able to tear-out a "sheet" as well (either discard it, or use it to start a "new" notebook), as well as place "tabs" or "flags" on certain pages.
Anyway, sorry to throw all that out there, just thinking out loud about some of the things I think would nice features. =)
Awesome! I have a HTC branded Dagi coming in this weekend from Amazon and will start fine-tuning the application. I have a griffin stylus, but it's total junk for drawing/writing.
The current version only works in 2.2, but I'll post up the apk when it's at a testing point.
My focus right now is (at least for the first beta) a quick to write app, and a simple UI.
Very cool! =)
If you want input or suggestions, I'd be happy to help.
Would love to see something like this. Looking forward to checking out your first effort. Thanks!
PS - are you planning to allow keyboard input as well, or stylus only?
I'm pretty happy with ColorNote. It is simple and you can put "stickies" on your home screen. It has a plain text notes or checklists.
I use InkPad and share the notes to my Evernote account that way they are all accessible via any device anytime.
I love Genial Writing, it's just like a virtual notebook and compensates for lack of stylus by allowing you to write and then press a button that shrinks your writing and fits it in a line of the notebook. It's hard to explain but using my finger I can make handwritten notes that fit quite a bit of information on one page. Check below for a picture/description.
Linky
can you point me to an apk download for inkpad? thanks
Hey guys,
After doing some testing I think my Nook Color's settings are off. I run the app and the stylus don't maintain a constant "stream" of points. The result is that it feels like your writing with a pen that is almost out of ink.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? I have two different stylus' and both react in a similar way (though the Dagi has better performance)
Gtasks.
Love this app.
I know that some people find flashers disgusting, but i cant help myself.
This app brings back all my notes just by installing and allow it to sync with google.
I have been looking for an app like this for awhile so if you are able to make one I would definitely be willing to beta test and pay for it if you decide to not make it freeware.
Awesome! I'm still working on it. The problem I'm currently dealing with is the touch-screen on the nook color isn't that great. Even when using a stylus (with no screen protector) the continuous drag event is broken up a lot. This makes it feel like your "pen" is running out of ink all the time.
I doubt stylus input will work on the nook. I've tried a few, and they all work like a dream on my iPhone and the iPads at the store, but they are frustrating and inconsistent on the Nook Color.

That sucks.
OP, Perhaps your app can add a "hold" button on the app that connects all points drawn in a complete line.. This will "connect the dots" so to speak instead of the jagged lines your getting..
I wonder if any of the sketching apps behave in this similar manner? Have you tried SBM or other sketching apps to see if this problem translates to all apps?

Looking for "Natural Display Calculator" on Android 2.3.7 CM

Hey app devs out there,
I just looked for a simple but powerfull calculator via the android market. Found nothing but the "old school" ones.
Yeah, there are tons of calculators out there, one has more abilities than the other. But thats not what I am looking for!
I am WORKING with my windows7 laptop, word2010 and microsoft's math4. Give it a try and you will see why I love this combination that damn much!
I am studying machanical engineering, so I need some features more than others, but the biggest thing is it must be as written on paper, that is what word2010+math4 gives me!
I write the fractions just as I would write them on paper, right after x^4/y^2 and space it is shown to me not in that freaky oldschool style, like excel still does.
So, why not have such an calculator on android? That would give many high mathematic working people a chance to get rid of windows, get an tablet (for me still an GalaxyAce) with android and a powerfull but easy to handle calculator.
As I have no clue about programming, it would take me months just to get the first lines, but this job realy needs enthusiasts to get it the way I mind it.
So, if any of you here knows where to place this request, please help me out. There must be sitting some super brains waiting for another challange, this would be a huge one!

I also came across the same need. It is pretty strange that on google play there is no such scientific calculator app available. I mean, the "natural display" feature would really be usefull, particulary on big screen devices. Anyone knows if such an app has been developer since DaBigFreak opened this thread?

We thought the same, so we developed an app that does exactly this! Let me know if you have any feedback. You can check it out here:

Hahahaha I definitely didn't expect to get a response from a 3 year old thread That's great to hear. You guys were actually part of the reason why we decided to develop this app - I ran into the same problem and was amazed at how there were zero natural display scientific calculators on the store, while the Apple Store had tons. We're continually updating the app at the moment and just added programmable constants! If you could leave a review that would mean a lot to me :fingers-crossed:

Wow, its a realy nice working calculator, but I definitly need integrals and matrizes. So if you could add this, it will be realy usefull at university

Thanks! We'll add that to the list of features to be implemented. At the moment we're working on adding history and favourites which is turning out to pretty painful. If you could leave a rating or review in the store, we'd be so grateful!

Before that, I'd love to see integrals, sum and matrizes. Then you can essentially do anything you want or that could be done.
Next big thing would be to make variables calculating available. Not storing a certain number as A, B, or C, but let the calculator solve an non-number equation to a specific variable.
Right behind that, setting up variables with a value, so you can define A:=5.0, B:=2*A and the equation only has A and B, the calculator gives the results.

All the things you've asked for are being worked on at the moment, but understandably it will be months before they're actually implemented. At the moment we really need traction to increase the visibility of our app, otherwise there's really no incentive for us to continue developing if it's going to be buried underneath thousands of crappy calculator apps on the Play Store That's why reviews and ratings are so important to us. We do take into account the many features that our users request, they'll all sitting in a document, slowly being ticked off one by one

How I take notes in class/meetings

http://youtu.be/S1SsFxcKqHw
I made this quick video of how I am doing it now, but if they had an app that did everything in one, that would be nice. People say why not just get the Powerpoint, but I'm using this for any program, any meeting, any document, anything really. We have a ERP system that's complex and users have meetings to show other users how to use the program, and writing down things doesnt always work. Screenshots of the place you need to be/click helps a lot. VNC or Join.me should be easy to implement for the IT department, so see if you can work with them or something, not just the teacher themselves. It really depends on the application, but in the workplace, I know I can use this, and in some school classes, this definitely helps.
Thank you for showing your way of taking notes.
I must say that I'm considering buying TF201 for note taking (because of awesome battery time). I'm 1st year IT student BTW, so I will be writing on it lots of math and physics stuff.
Unfortunately, I'm studying at classic university (boards still over computers), so VNC is not a way to go for me.
I've found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToypvuZg9Lw
I see it's working correctly for simple things, equations etc., but did anyone test it for more advanced things? How is it going? Maybe you have different methods?
I would appreciate some opinions.
Thanks,
Burag.

Greatly disappointment (930)

Just need to tell my story and need to vent it out there hahah,
Bare in mind im coming from a android
Fist i was really excited when my lumia 930 was delivered, fired it up and just wow!!! Nice built quality, great design, love 8.1, a little chunky and heavy but mehh i can live with it!
The first few days i was flabbergasted about performance, resolution, media playback, photo quality i loved every moment of it,butttttttt after a few days i would
Try to share a vid or pic with whatsapp for example...it constantley fails,ok ill use we transfer for that no problem,........browser doenst fully support some sites so we transfer didnt work that wel,
The lack of a good file explorer was greatly disapointing considering its a windows phone....come on man its freaking windows!!!! And i was hoping on a file tree similar like win7 pc
No movie playback app only the one provideed by microsoft that doesnt let you skip per secend but per some what seconds....i mean...ftw and i constantly have to cut/paste to let the movies be visible in it or use a 3d party app (moliplayer) and paste vid in my camera roll......
I really like the OS and how it handles some things butt the lack of good coded and full fuetured apps is a realllll deal breaker for me,so i factory reset the lumia and threw it in a corner and back on my xperia z again until win10 drops and hopefully the development on the apps will be much greater so that every fueture and so on will work great,
Sorry to spam u guys butt if you guys have some good tips for me i will be truely be greatfull, i know i have android in my blood since it launched so im a little spoiled fueture wise

Wait for windows 10. All I can say. If that doesn't excite you , or provide the features that you need, then go back to android. But Microsoft is really pushing it to new heights. Wait and see as they say
If only app development would be more suitible, likr apps that work better that would make a real diffetence
Edit
Does someone know a launchdate on wp10? Even microsoft is dodgy on it

You and me Both Bro...
Man I completely agree with you. Jay here, and my story is the same as yours , I have been a long time fan WinMO for like a decade str8, then i hopped on the Green machine for a long while, and about 5 months ago I switched to WP8 with the HTC One M8 for Windows just for something new ,and I feel like I have a Palm Pre in my hand, the OS is super stable and smooth, But there just no one backing it, Even HTC is discontinung their own apps, Its just sad, Everyone is jumping ship for this platform, and I cant wait to go back to android in about a month, Summed up in 2 words Lesson Learned!
I have the l930 and a HTC m8 (android) but the only one I have in use is the l930. All apps I need are available for Windows and the system experience is much more polished and fluid. Apps are sometimes not good as on Android but its enough for me.
Pictures taken with the 930 are the best pics I have ever seen on phone.
Much much better as on my m8...
If ms can close the app situation windows can really be a competitor.
Please remember this is my opinion and experience and yours can be different
Wauwwww how the hell does microsoft not be a shamed of this outlook app and office hub sjizzle i have a pdf i need to download and send forward,i "downloaded" it but i cant find it anyware on my phone only in a stupid pdf reader and must upload it to onedrive and share a link in a email?omg microsoft please,if you guys holding on to this kind of coded apps and dont give people some freedom with files ect. Ect. Then it will all be over soon with wp i think

By the way I have been using WP for many years, yes there are still some missing apps, but if you look around there are always good alternatives (in some cases better than original in fact) are available. I only recently sold my Lumia 930 as I already have Lumia 1520 as my daily driver, and couple of other Lumias at home.
a) I can share pics on Whatsapp no issue at all, so I'm not sure what may be the issue at your end. I'd recommend uninstall this app, and then reinstall and see whether this helps.
b) There are few very good file explorers, apart from Microsoft's own File Explorer app, lately I've been using Briefcase and it seems to be a very decent alternative.
c) I've used beta version VLC for many months, and recently it has been released for all WP users, so you can download it from the store. Also Windows 10 for Phones will support MKV right out of the box.
Other good alternatives for: a) MetWeets > Twitter official app; b) 6tag > Instagram official app etc.
If you need any further clarification regarding some app or its alternative, just ask away.
Good luck.
How do i let whatsapp download videos to the video folder so the vid is visible in vlc without copy/paste it

Anyone using the S7+ to create simple or complex 2d/3d architectural drawings?

Basically title, I'm curious to see if anyone uses this for construction projects big or small.
I've always found an imaginary need for a tablet, but now that I actually have one, I'm having difficulty actually finding decent apps in the vast ocean of garbage I seem to find on the Samsung or Google stores.
So...any construction folk, building or drawing side of things, have some experience to kindly share? Thanks!

I use XODO to mark-up PDF files of architectural plans while at jobsites. I also have some blank PDF files I use to mark-up new floor plans in XODO as well.
I have a couple different autocad programs, but trying to do some actual drafting doesn't really work. I only use the programs to view cad files from email to make sure the files are what we need.

I found with CAD, not using a mouse and keyboard is too difficult. And if I am going to use a mouse and keyboard, I might has well be on my laptop. I also can't plot to PDF with the line types I use in my design standard, so any changes I make I can't send out. So I mark-up PDFs and send them back to my designer to fix. That's enough for me, and it works great.

Yeah, I'm really just using it for small residential jobs. So I'm not designing entire floor plans even. Sometimes it helps when you can get to a job and draft an entire deck or closet space to scale though.
Yessir! With AutoCAD.
When I was a field worker (tech, not architecture), I would use chrome remote desktop fto connect to my desktop PC for any "heavy" computing. I brought along a keyboard and mouse foot the tablet in case I needed them. It worked out pretty well.
