Question/help with customization? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hope this is in the correct location. Im trying to find a way to have i guess a minimalist home screen. I just want to have whatever apps on my homescreen to have no icons just the label. But i want the apps in the draw to still have the icons. Not sure if i explained that too well. I had i believe ADW launcher with a minimalist theme. But it also took away the icons in the draw. Which i guess wasnt all that bad but it didnt change all of them. Some had just the label and others still had the icon so it was a mess.
Does anyone know a way i can have just the apps on my homescreen just show the label and no icon? Or
Manually change whatever icons in the draw didnt change with that minimalist theme?

You are missing something.
1. Add widget
2. Widget option
3. Predefined Widget (select custom)
4. Custom Layout
5. Add > Misc > Static Text > Text Here (app name in your case)
6. Go back
7. Start Another Activity or a Shortcut
Then your done, just repeat till you have everything you want.
Its really customizable so you can have the text in almost any way you want, explore it some more.

Simple text from the market. You must be using an alternate launcher other in than stock. You can make text only jpegs and assign them to use as an icon. The apps will look normal still in your app drawer.
See my dock icons in the picture below. Is this what you want?

A Thought - For the upcoming roms [Time Clock]

Like many of you guys, I really appreciate the benefits of a nice big clock widget. And I find the time on the application bar to be very redundant. I would like to see an option for that to be disabled in any of the newer upcoming roms. It will save precious space
Here's what it might look like

Personally I like having the time there. That way when I'm doing something like browsing the web I can still see what time it is. Comes in handy when I'm on my lunch break.

yeah, there will definitely be instances when you'd want the time there. i think an option to display it on and off would be very handy

It would be great if the time display in the menu bar could be dynamic. When in an app have it display, when on the home screen, have it hidden.
What power widget is that? Definitely more useful than the android one.
I got the gauge battery and the switch pro widget. Highly recommend it. There are many different configurations.

Thx!
it's fairly straight forward to remove yourself if you like. If you check this thread; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780614 There's a walkthrough. But be aware on the SGS the line item numbers for the clock and alarm are different than what he shows in that thread.

Well, I tried and failed.. if someone comes across this, please PM me if you have some nice icons that will fill a page as if it were a wallpaper (like the link in the OP).

If you use adw ex you can choose no icons in the ui main dock settings , put icons on the hidden dock so you can at least open your app launcher .when you remove the icons from the main dock ,you can then place widgets where the icons would have been. then use desktop visualizer icons/widgets to completely cover the home screen. Then put the "regular" icons on the hidden dock you can swype them up/down ,they will appear over the desktop visualizer icons ,and will work.( incase you dont want the empty looking dock option )you could put your launcher and like for or five icons there (on the hidden dock), the only problem I'm having is finding images that will look good as desktop visualizer icons

[Q] Change app icon/name in bottom dock

I was wondering if it's possible to change an app's name and icon in the bottom dock? I can't seem to find any apps for it, the only ones (anycut, bettercut, desktop visualizer etc) I can find are only able to create shortcuts on the homescreen, but I can't put those in the dock.
I know there's LauncherPro/AWD, but I would like to keep using Touchwiz 4.
tl;dr:

You may consider trying out Bettercut or SuperShortcuts.
I have not tested those, but according to their features it looks to achieve what you are looking for.

Those apps create shortcuts on the homescreen, which you can't drag into the dock.

I don't want to use a launcher, but I would like to be able to to customise the icons and text. Something like what Desktop Visualiser does for home screen icons.
It should be possible since other launchers can do it, right? Or is TW a little bit too complicated?
I'm using Go Launcher Ex atm, it's pretty good but TouchWiz 4 feels faster and smoother.

Really?
My reading of the app description implies that one needs a launcher to make use of the dock customisation.
Correct me if I am wrong. If this is not the case then this may well be the answer. I am happy to pay for the app if it does the job; however I am reluctant to dive on in without confirmation that this is indeed the solution to the problem.
Can anyone confirm that Custom Launcher Icons can be used to edit the icon and text of a TW dock icon without the need for a launcher or root access?

I used to have it on my androided HD2, it was with ADW launcher...
I tried it on the TW, i guess it needs a launcher after all
Sorry for the wrong info guys!
Bummer. Thought we might have been on to something there. Never mind.
The search goes on.

Has anyone made any progress on this?
I am yet to find a solution that doesn't involve installing an alternative launcher.

[Q] Icons too far apart?

Hi everyone,
Anyone else think the icons on the screen are too far apart?
Do any of the ROMs/MODs address this problem/issue?
Use LauncherPro, you can set how many apps/icons you have by the column and by the row. I think ADW does this as well..
Edit: I have mine set to 8 rows & 5 columns, no labels.

Move icons closer together!
Seriously...........I use ADW EX............have columns set to 5 and rows set to 7. You can also scale your icons and icon text with ADW.
Image below will illustrate the distance between icons. I have found if I tighten up the grid anymore, especially in columns, they get too close together.

Sick wallpaper! Will you share?
use Go Launcher EX, it's free and has most of the features of LP+ (widget resizing being the biggest)
Regina Launcher also does the trick, plus it has a nice 3D look

Question regarding spacing between icons

Hey guys,
Sorry for the bunch of questions in recent days. I'm new a this while being fairly compulsive. Ok so let's make use of the ability to make screen shot. In the picture below, apps on the left are from stock touch wiz, and the second set of icons (more to the right) are from the TW SIII mod from pale horse. As you can see, apps on the right have much more space between them then on the left. Is there anyway for me to make it so apps on the right have the same space between them than apps on the left? It is very obsessive of me I know.
Thank you
Install the Apex launcher. Then you can change the grid of your desktop to any spacing that suits you.
And this is for caring about icon spacing. . .

What did you do to fix this?
Another thing Apex can do is let you resize icons. Maybe that could help?
And you know the CDO picture was strictly a joke - not trying to do anything here but assist.
That was a good one ranger...LOL
And yes....we need a sense of humor around here once in a while....g
Right? You know sometimes you can get someone's undies in a bunch by just saying hi.
Ahah no worries I can take a joke. I embed up doing nothing. Apex had the same problem so I just took a deep breath and accepted things as they are.

I use SSLauncher, and do whatever I like with the homescreen(s). Spacing, resizable widgets, etc.... SSLauncher=freedom!
from the looks of your photo something was changed other then just icons. your homescreen indicators and wallpaper dont line up. you can try changing your screen density to something larger to fill in the gaps. stock is 320. i use apex like ranger recomended and hide icon labels then change grid size. i use 8x5 and this makes all my icons very close(i also use text for icons rather then pictures). you should play around with it. pro version also lets you resize and overlap widgets so you can get icons close but still have widgets look like they should.
