Downloading speed problem? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have tried to search the forum but I still can't find what I'm looking for.
It seems there're some problems with my downloading speed. My download speed always reach max speed when download gameloft data (1gb takes only ~20 minutes), but aside from that, it's slow. Wifi or 3G, even a 10mb file downloading from a file hosting service like mediafire takes ~30 minutes to complete, if it doesn't stuck.
I'm using Hyperdroid with Siyah kernel. But really, I've got this problem since stock and it won't disappear no matter which rom I tried.
Can someone at least tell me what is wrong? It's frustrated to have to connect to PC everytimes I want to grab something from the internet.

And no idea how the heck the connection got interrupted, I think most of the time it does (otherwise it would continued to download), and only on my phone. When it doesn't, the speed is really slow. Trying another browser doesn't solve it as I tried some of them and the results are the same.

what does speed test on wifi give u?
More information the better

try a speedtest..
sometimes download data depend on server too..
some server give you highspeed, and some server slower..
it should be normal if you normally download on same server with the average speed..
i download data via gaming also fast than download via mediahosting

Just tried some. It gave me 5.12Mps on download speed and 0.57 on upload speed. And the server is in my country, chose another server will give me a connection error. Maybe that explains something, I get max download speed with gameloft data downloading because there's gameloft server in my country. But then comes the question, why downloading speed from server outside my country is so slow (and usually stucks) on my phone? While using the same connection on my PC gives me usual speed (and by "usual" I mean it's really fast).

So the 5.12Mbps your getting.... what connection is that from??
I have a 50Mbps line and get 10Mbps - 24Mbps depending on where i connect to and signal strength etc... over WiFi
I wouldn't say that's bad if its from a 10Mbps line for example ... what were you expecting / how much worse is it than your PC?

On my PC it's about 10-15. The slowest is about 5-6 I think. And it's about the fastest my phone can get.

Sorry for bumping the thread, But I have the same problem
Very low wifi-speeds. Perhaps not rom related
On my computer I get around 16mb/sec, And I used to get that also on my phone. But now the speed is around 2mb/sec. Please somebody know what the problem can be??

[super noob] Extremely unstable data connection (phone issue, with linux on pc)

Hi there,
i'm very noob to pdas in general, i have this herm100 that my friend sold me when i needed to get internet access (i combined my budget for phone and internet in one).
Well, after a while of hard work, i was able to get data working on my Linux PC (EeePC 701). The connection was closing automatically when not in use, this behavior is useful when not used as modem (to keep battery).
I created a script that "connects" my pc to the phone (it setups the interface's ip, etc...), when connected, it then pings the phone (10.0.0.1) and pings my host on the internet by IP (this tests that i have access to the internet). It makes other tests too to make sure dns is working and that my webserver on that host is still working too...
I make the pings to the host by ip every 15 seconds (or less when it fails). With this and minimal internet usage, the connection will drop on the phone 2 to 5 times a day.
When i say that the connection drops, i mean that ping to the phone works, but ping to the internet fails, times out. Most the time, the internet sharing prog on wm6 says it's still connected. Many times, if i try to access the web from the phone it will fail (wait forever, rarely will also freeze). So when the internet is dropped, one time out of 4 i have to reset the device (i found that shutting down for a while gives even better results).
I just recently got a super promo for my data package with my isp and my limit got increased a lot... I tried downloading torrents. Downloading torrents will cause the phone to drop connection _at_least_ every 5 minutes!!! The device is also pretty hot (like i wouldnt like to have that heat in my jeans pocket but doesnt hurt when touching). I have setup my torrent application to limit download and upload speed so that overall no more than 15 KB/sec is used and this increases stability a lot, but it will still fail within 10-20 minutes.
I wonder if the hardware could be responsible, but i'm clearly sure that the OS is the one most responsible (it fails to detect the network is down and fails to at least try to bring it back). Maybe an os upgrade or hard reset would help. But if i have to go that far i might just try to install linux on it instead (openmoko probably, unless you suggest anything else?)
I was wondering if you guys could help stabilize my connection a bit?
Thanks!
Simon

Wifi not working after unlocking phone.

Unable to use wifi in any build of android after unlocking my hd2. I get edge from att but I can't access the market with it. It connects to wifi but when I try to add my google account it times out and says I need to connect to wifi.
first of all, please post in right forum: q n a forum would be quite suited for these QUESTIONS. and it all depends on which build you're using, and if you've updated the bcm4329.ko and tun.ko files as to if wifi will work or not
Well the first build i tried was mattcfroyosense1.7ppp, and it was working fine. I then unlocked the phone and when I booted into android I was unable to do anything with wifi. I did replace the wifi modular files.
id suggest deleting your android folder and remaking one
I have problems with wifi too I dont think is fast...like in all the build that ive try when I use wifi and try to download something the speed is really slow... I remember that in the iphone I could get 800 kb/second when downloading a file.
is it because wifi in android is that slow? or the phone can't download that fast?
Lol! I get 1,6mb/s download with wifi, and like 2500kb/s upload.....so must be the build you use.....not a problem of android.

Is that doing the speed test thing or downloading the actual file? cause when Sometimes I do the speed test and my phone says is download speed is like 5-8 MB and like 1 MB of uploading speed.
now when I download the file the speed is really slow.
well i got the market working...but now the wifi just says error when trying to turn it on.
Ok so for anyone else who might get into this weird situation. I changed the password on my router to WEP instead of WPA and now it works perfectly fine on the phone.

Extremely slow wifi speeds

SOLVED! See end of post
Galaxy Tab 32Gb Wifi.
I'm suffering from extremely slow wifi transfer speeds.
In ES FileExplorer, when copying a file from LAN, transfers are below 0,5 Mb/minute. Running http://www.speedtest.net will show download speeds of around 20kb/s....
I experienced this on the stock ROM with the root update, and on the Bonsai ROM also. The only time i didn't recall having these issues is on stock ROM unrooted.
Any ideas?
ps. My Wifi access point is a TP-LINK n-router with dd-wrt. Connection show a TX rate to the Tab of around 60Mbs and a receive rate of N/A (meaning, to slow to show?)
Encryption is WPA2/EAS, long pressing the Wifi entry on the tab shows a linkspeed of 5Mbps. It shows 65Mbps right after connecting but then drops, meaning the android os just isnt asking for more speed it seems
update: downloading a 5Mb file from XDA took around 30 seconds, thats more like it. The slowness seems restricted to LAN SMB shares.
update2: solved! It turned out my router with DDWRT firmware ran out of JFFS2 memory. This is a dedicatedportion of the routers flas memory to store custom programs or small webservers etc.I have no idea why it was enabled, all i know is the minute i disabled it, LAN transfer speeds increased tremendously. Now i know also why i had to reboot my router every now and then becauseof connection problems....
Hahaha. Something similar happened to me. It was also the router.
Man thanks a ton for posting the solution! I googled to this thread and restarting the modem solved my problem too. I've come across so many idiots who just posts "I found the solution/Problem solved" and that just pisses me off!
Thanks once again!
Edit: Sry for bumping this but i had to post!
Hi,
I have the same issue with my Netgear DGN2200v3, and I've seen it uses JFFS2 as well.
I'm not sure to install a custom firmware to solve the problem but I've also read something about changing the way the file system is mounted (i.e. rw instead of r).
Do you think the only solution would be to get rid of this fu...ng JFFS2?

[Q] Speed up 3G/download speeds on Optimus V? PLEASE READ!

I'm getting crappy download, upload, and 3G connectivity speeds on my Virgin Mobile LG Optimus V. I'm rooted, running CyanogenMod-7.2.0-BACKside-IHO-KANG, Build ID: eng.jerry.20111122.082819, Build Number: GRJ90 (11222011/VM670), and Kernal Version: 2.6.32.9-v3.3 [email protected] #1, and Android Version: 2.3.7.
I've read that flashing Franco Kernal may help a little bit with network speeds, but that was for the Optimus S. The Optimus S & V are pretty much the same, so would it be safe to flash Franco's Kernel with the ROM that I'm using now?
I've also read that dialing ##3282#, and editing the HTTP PD Port to value 0 and Address to 0.0.0.0 would then increase download speeds by 0.20-0.60 MBPS, but that was for the HTC Evo. I tried dialing to service code ##3282# on my dialer, and nothing happened.
Finally, I also read that doing a PRL Update manually and inserting/replacing Virgin Mobiles PRL file with a new and updated PRL file will significantly increase signal and speeds, but its risky, and requires depth to do so. Also, it allows to connect to Verizon's towers, therefore it would then not allow any data connectivity for browser, market, etc.
So, folks, my question is, is there ANYTHING or ANY WAY I can improve my download/browser speeds? Would downloading a proxy app from the Market work and apply faster speeds for downloading on my phone?
Thanks for any and all help, as it will be greatly appreciated!
3g turbocharger script
try that
and PRL update
proxy? naw dog you'd be doing it wrong
try this too

It is super difficult. And really it'd be like putting a supercharger on a pinto. Sounds great when you tell your friends, but you're not going to win any races. The real problem is sprints network, and the fact that we buy the cheapest service available from people who lease a very small percentage of their bandwidth. I get 50- 125 kbps consistently. Not allot to do besides try another carrier.

Yeah for real! That's no joke lol I might try doing a PRL update tonight, but that's a big maybe. I used to get 200kbps download when I first got with Virgin Mobile with the LG Optimus V, now it seems my speeds are slowly deteriorating. And it doesn't help that Virgin Mobile is gonna bring a data cap on their 3G in 2012 to only 2.5GB, after that, they are gonna put a maximum set download speed cap after the customer uses up the 2.5GB in the month. Which sucks for me bc I'm always on Facebook, Linkdin, Twitter, browsing the market, web, downloading, etc. :/
Well social media doesn't take up very much data at all, it's the downloads that might get you if you use them a lot.

ok thanks. i may try it. still a little skeptical as a few of the comments mentioned that it broke their wifi and that the developer didn't respond to their emails.
franco's kernel is for the msm7227 chipset (unless he built one for the OS I'm unaware of,) the OV/OS have msm7627.
they are NOT compatible.
I got nasty side effects back when I flashed a msm7227 kernel on my OV for experimental purposes. it took a couple of days before it would boot consistently again even though I put a compatible kernel back on it immediately after it locked up ugly from the wrong chipset compiled kernel. It would freeze on boot until the battery was pulled for a minute or two.
I can get much better download speeds in a debian chroot on the OV with multiple download threads, using axel, but I don't know of any way to multithread downloads in Android.
As an example, my average DL speed ranges from 1-30K/sec. With axel, I can pull down over 100K/sec, with no other variables obviously changed. the Android browser very rarely goes over 100K/sec on my OV. (I am in a lousy service area.)
SetDNS (or other similar apps) "speed up the connection" by taking some of the guess work out of trying to find the resource on the web.
Most of the slowness in wireless comes from the fact that a wireless network is like a hub (in that it's a shared medium) so if two or more people transmit at the same time there is a network collision (two or more signals interfear with each other keeping the tower from understanding the request) per TCP/IP protocal all devices involved in the collision must back off for a random amount of time (to ensure they don't all retransmit at the same time again) and try again. This effect grows as the size of the wireless network grows and the more people who are on it. It effects cellular much more than wifi as you can have many more people on a cell tower as it covers much more ground.
***Intermission***
Now when your phone makes a DNS request (usually the browser, but some apps as well) there are actually many steps involved in trying to turn a url into an ip address, there are mutliple ways other than dns to turn a url into an address (most of which are legacy but it still tries anyway) trying all of these ways in addition to trying to find a DNS server means multiple request on the network which increases the likelyhood of collisions thus increasing the latency and causing timeouts (this is why sometimes your browser will start to load a page and then just hang there for awhile.)
***Almost there, Hang on just a little longer***
Now back to setDNS, this app allows you to specify a dns IP address (instead of it trying to find one) thus forcing it to use that address before trying anyother method, so your phone browser (or app) doesn't waste time looking for a dns or trying legacy methods. Thus reducing the request and collision/timeouts on a network, overall making your phone load stuff much quicker.
Works well enough that I use the web version of gmail and google reader instead of native apps (though native apps are generally quicker as they don't have to load the ui everytime you open it and sometimes the app will use an ip instead of a url, though some apps use url's in the code because the resources at needs have dynamically allocated (and thus always changing) ip addresses.)
Does anyone know if the Turbo/Supercharger scripts actually work? I assume any difference seen is minimal and also it may wear down your battery even faster. Battery life on these phones is already precious.

[Q] Help decrease or limit my data connection speed of EVDO

Yes you read it right.
When all are searching to increase their mobile data connection speed, here I am asking the opposite.
Is there any tweak or any app using which I can limit the the speed?
Pl note: I do not want my data to be disconnected but to run at lower speed that's all.
And I am trying to do that on my EVDO connection.
My photon is rooted, unlocked and Running on miui 2.5.25
huh
Not sure how you can do this or why

can change flow control in build prop, but I dont think the ics roms have that line, also you can try since you are on miui playing with their data control options may be able to accomplish your goal with it or at least come close to doing it..... its a very odd request have to say you are the first to want slower 3g.....**** if my 3g was any slower I'd end up smashing my phone....sprint service very very very crappyin my area....using the net speed test app from market I barely get close to 700 down laughable ping and upload doesn't even twitch....lol...gl man if you figure it out do share....lol

I was trying for this as my photon has a strange problem. The data gets disconnected automatically when the download speed crosses around 1.5 mbps.
I have observed this when using HD video on YouTube or some big file download
Near my office I have a very good signal and I get speeds up to around 2.2mbps and here connection gets disconnected very often during high data transfer. But near my home I get speeds up to 1.0to 1.5 mbps only and here data does not get disconnected.
Also near the office data connection is intact for normal browsing(like small file download or normal web page viewing).
So trying to figure out if I put a cap to my data speed will it resolve the issue.

None of the battery saving app as of now which i remember.
I am sure that may not be the issue as the problem is persistent from the day i rolled back to stock till today when i have tried CM7/MIUI/CM9.
Can there any android process that may be running in background that is disabling the data connection and making radio to reset after few mins once it detects high data transfer ?
