[Q] Best Video Player - Motorola Droid RAZR

As the Razr Cannot play all formats like the Galaxy S which i previously Owned , Right now i am using the MX Video Player which plays all format but it sometimes cant play the bigger with ease , the fps seems to be low and not smooth.i.e there no smoothness in running video..I know a Dual Core Phone should handle big video files with ease.So is there problem in the App or are there any alternatives ?
For Examples If i am playing a 700mb AVI file it seems to be little laggy :|

I've played bigger files that are in the range of 1.7 GB each and they're smooth using Software Decoder (Fast mode).
I believe it's got something to do with the decoding and isn't an issue with the phone itself. Compatibility is a major pain for Android.
Edit: Used MX Player for the above. I've tested out others and MX Player seems to be the best for now. No codecs installed too.

I might be wrong but I believe that the galaxy s supports more formats natively than the razr (and transformer). I was testing some videos I had on my transformer tablets (on the razr) and discovered the stock player could not handle them (black screen with audio) so I gave mx a try and it was handling the decoding in software. These streams are relatively low resolution (dvds) with different encodings (mp4, mp2, ...) and different containers (avi, h.264, ...).
-
I could see that with higher resolutions there might be issue with the software encoding. Also, you might check the bit-rate your sd card can handle (or try using internal storage) if there is stuttering (i.e, the issue might be read-rate as well as software decoding).
-
Anyways the two players I have traditionally used (beyond stock) are mobo and mx. I generally favor mx (which you had issues).

Yez if not MX, then use mobo, software playback seems smoother in mobo player.

I use MX and its great. Super smooth.
I like the finger swipe to fast forward/rewind and the zoom feature

Yea right The MX Video Player With S/W Decoding Enabled Everything runs smooth be it in fast mode or not .
Now i can play bigger files with ease. Damn i need to work hard to get acquainted with motorola. Used Galaxy S for 2 yrs

MxPlayer the best
720p on S/W (not fast) runs very smooth RAZR natively supports 1080p .mp4 files, mxplayer has much trouble with playing it in S/W mode. But in H/W runs great

So can RAZR play xVid/AVI format files natively? (like my Samsung Fascinate can). I am assuming if not the MX player mentioned above can????
MX certainly plays AVI fine on my Fascinate. I used to have Act 1 video player on my Droid (1).
Drooling over RAZR MAXX!

I'm using MX player ans so far everything i've tried running, runs without any problems including subtitles.

I've been using buzzplayer, it seems to handle almost anything, and it can stream video from SMB shares.

I've always used MoboPlayer. Not come across much it couldn't play.

I didn't like MX.. I use mVideoPlayer. Works great. Can't explain why it's so much better. Just try it out and see. It's all preference though.

Mobo here. No complaints.

I'm trying MX out right now and it's struggling to load my .avi files. Does it just take a long time to start? I know the files are good because I used them on my Droid 2.

Best video player?

so i'm confused, mainly because I don't know anything about video codecs, but what is the best video player for the Atrix. With the Tegra 2, I assumed video playback would not be a problem. However, I've had issues playing AVI files as well as MP4 files downloaded through TubeMate. I've tried the default player, Mvideo Player, Act 1 Player, QQ player, and YX player. For my MP4 files, some play and others lag while the sound plays without issue.
Any suggestions?

Act 1 Player for me.
The problem is that a lot of these players are using a "software decode" method instead of a "hardware decode" method. Rockplayer worked like a charm on the captivate for mp4 mkv... etc but for some reason rockplayer does not work well with tegra chip. I have contacted them about this and they gave me a version that was supposed to be for our device but it did not work any better. So hopefully a tegra vid player with hardware decoding will come out soon.
I was wondering about the whole "software decode" over "hardware decode". Hopefully Rockplayer releases an updated version. In the meantime, I'll try Act 1 again.

Well since the Tegra doesn't have hardware support for high-profile H.264 you're not going to *get* a video player that handles hardware decoding any better than the default app. There's a reason the default "Video Player" won't play those files.
Try Vital Player. I've used it to play a few files even up to 1080p using Software Decoding. It's not perfect but it's one of the best I've tried. Software decoding is the *ONLY* way to play most H.264 videos.

I am trying out Vital Player myself and I can't get it to see my sdcard. It keeps going into my internal storage. I set the root directory in the settings area for /mnt/sdcard-ext/ I tried several variations but it keeps looking into my internal storage. I don't keep videos in there cause they take up too much room. Any one know how to get it to look in the sd card?
Instead of using the built in file browser you can select the video file in the motorola file app then select it then Vital Player.
So far it works excellent for me. Seems smoother and the on screen controls are useful.
I have been using the file app but if I like the player I was thinking of getting the pro. But no sense paying money if I can't use the built in file search. I don't mind spending a few bucks on something good.

[Q] Video

Has anyone tried playing any HD MKV's through the Rezound? If so, does it handle it better than Tegra 2 and utilize the screen well?
i've got a bunch of 720P .mkv files i've tried out. for the most part they play fine, but occasionally there's a slight "out-of-sync" issue. it seems the 2 best apps to use for playing these files are Dice Player and MX Video Player. the weird thing is, sometimes when a sync issue occurs, for instance if it's in MX, i'll try playing in Dice instead and it'll play fine... but there's times it'll happen the other way around to. of course, considering that the OS isn't really designed to take advantage of multi-core CPU's + the b.s. Sense & bloatware on the phone don't help either.
I have seen the same type of files play on the Galaxy Nexus as well(but through the stock player) and the GN had similiar issues as well though.. so... hmmm.. !!
Theyplay fine with moBo player for me

What's your video properties? I just tried to play Transformers: Dark of the Moon and it stutter forever.
I saw the videos in the gallery that come preloaded on the device and they look amazing. I want to be able to take my HD MKV's and have then look good and play as fluid as the pre-loaded ones. Any suggestions for that or conversion?
There is a vlc media player beta floating around in the nook color threads. It works pretty fing good, mobo seems to do the job as well. I have found that it depends on how, or what it was encoded with. I will try and post a link to the vlc file in awhile. Good luck.

ok here's one that'll play slightly "out-of-sync":
Regular Show - 309 - House Rules (720p).mkv
MPEG4 video (.H264)
1280x720 23.98fps
Audio: Dolby AC3 48000Hz 6ch

How to play 720P High Profile videos?

Hello,
I know there seems to be some sort of issue with Tegra 2 chipsets not decoding video properly but I read that with the right codec and video players you can play 720p high profile MKVs/MP4s, how can I do that?
Also, does it matter what ROM I'm on? Like CM7 vs Stock MotoBlur? I'm on CM7 and I tried a few video apps and most face some sort of problem with 720p videos stuttering and whatnot.
Thanks.
Hmmm

That's one of the most important issue of the Atrix.
I can't play most of my HD anime videos fluently on my Atrix because the hardware doesn't support high quality HD mkv videos.
But I've heard the Samsung S2 does.... -.-
And that makes me angry!
Anyway if you not afraid of trying HD videos on your Atrix, you should try 'MX video player' and 'V player' (both need separate codecs).
Both are great but 'V player' is the only player which can show subtitles from mkv videos which I stream with my w-lan router from my external hard drive.
Motorola Atrix 4G AT&T unlocked
If you haven't yet, try MX Video player. It uses some software trickery and plays most if not all of my hd videos beside being the best video player in many aspects. I tested on the phone only so don't know what the output to an external monitor would be.
Don't forget to install the right codec and always toggle 'software fast mode' on the screen if videos get stuck. It also gives you the ability to zoom into the picture.
Regards
Edit: Blizzard22 - I much prefer MX to VPlayer. Especially as the former seems more optimized for tegra...
Not sure if it has problems with subtitles in certain containers... until now subtitles worked for me and their rendering is very pleasing.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I have both player and I personally prefer MX video player but the subtitles are missing if you stream your videos with mx.
V player can show the subtitles and that's why I prefer V player.
But for normal use I definitely prefer mx before visiting player.

I think this is a problem of the Tegra, High Profile videos not work with HW decoding, I have tryed MX player, but, all the times it loses sync or drop frames.
the temp solution for me is recode videos to Baseline profile in 720p
VLC is coming for android, maybe that will be the golden egg.

if they use HW decoding, but will be stuck on Baseline Profile again
The two players I have the most luck with are Dice and Mobo. Try them out.

Best video player and add-ons?

Anyone have a favorite video player? I want something that will play all types of files, like MP4, AVI, MKV.
Aside from finding the 'best' one, a problem is when I download something like MX Video Player, I see all these add-on apps like codexes that are for specific processors. Which should I choose?
Thanks for any help or advice.
I think this question was already answered in another forum... but I downloaded MX Player and didn't have to install any codecs. For my atrix the mx player app prompted me to download... i think the armv7. But for the note, everything just played fine. I didn't get to try mkv's though.
MX Player can play 1080p mkv's just fine in hardware mode.
I use that in conjunction with file manager with samba support to stream from my NAS.
Another vote for MX player. I've even uninstalled the stock video player and just use the MX player for my main video player.
MX player will automatically prompt a codec download if needed. You don't need one with the Note.
Dice player is another good one but it had some slight lag when I was watching a movie which was disappointing. That never happened to me before with dice.
Loving vlc alpha. No pros in software or hardware mode with a 720p movie for 3+ hours.
I find MX to be jittery in HW mode on many video files (doesnt happen to me on my international Note). I run in SW mode but the quality appears to be slightly worse..?

Yeah MX seems to be a bit jittery with my .MPG files... it wont even play them in HW mode, i have to use SW mode.. and even then i have to use SW Mode Fast Decoder to get it to play properly
however the quality looks excellent to me. I'm still amazed by this f*ckin screen. 1000x better then my atrix.
Anybody know the best conversion settings for Handbrake? I read on another site that these were good choices, but seem to be for International version:
Video
Codec- H.264
Resolution- 1280×720/1280×800 (HD)
Bitrate- 1500kbps
Framerate- 30fps
Audio
Codec- AAC
Sampling rate- 44.1khz
Bitrate- 160kbps
Channel- stereo
I use Moboplayer and it seems to work fine. I wish vlc would be final.

MX Player has been working great for me...
Rockplayer and dice play everything I need.
Mx player will attempt to play anything you throw at it. I used it until I realized that's not necessarily a good thing. It will play files that it can't play well...with no video, with audio sync issues, at half desperate, or down-scaled. Not what I wanted.
I use CIFS Manager to mount windows shares locally. This give you access to more players. If you have issues, a TVersity install may be an option.

MX Player on ICS leak question

Hi all,
I recently jumped the bandwagon and installed ICS leak on it. Tried Dagr8 Alpha 1 and 2. I also tried Collective. I really love those leaked roms (except maybe Alpha 2, so much lag in my case).
I need help with MX player. One of the biggest reason I bought the note was to watch a lot of my anime series when in the bus going to work/from work. I download animes in MKV format and the subtitles there are embedded. The anime I download are usually 1080p and 720p. I download this video size because sometimes I watch it on my computer too. So I just download it at large sizes so I can watch it anywhere with good quality.
Anyway, when I installed ICS and installed MX player, I'm having horrible out of sync with audio/video. It also gets worse when you watch the video longer. Sometimes out of sync takes a 4-second difference.
If I change from Hardware acceleration to Software, out of sync goes away but the playback is sooo laggy that you can't watch it too. ** Oh maybe not totally go away, as I just experienced right now (while typing this) that I had an out of sync issue even in software decoder. **
I never had any issue with GingerBread. All my anime video plays fine even in 1080p. I have not tried converting to Mp4 but I don't think it will make sense because it was working before with GB. I have a lot of anime and converting it would be a pain for me. Maybe there is a trick that I can do in ICS to fix this issue.
Are you guys also having out of sync issues with some videos in MX player? If not, please try playing videos in MKV with embedded subs and let me know.
I really want to stick with ICS. This is the only reason I'm going to go back to GB before I get to work on monday Please help, I really don't want to go back to GB anymore.
Thanks
bumping thread.
or maybe others can suggest a player that is like MX that uses hardware acceleration to play clips.
Mobo Player does not and I can't find any other player out there that uses HW accel for playback.
Thanks

Although I haven't watched any anime since I flashed ICS, my mx player has had no issues with any movies I've played. I'll download an anime movie and let you know.
Have you tried clearing the data/cache or even reinstalling?

Thanks. That would be awesome. I'm actually looking for a 1080p mkv movie video (even trailers will do) so I could just test it without subs. Surprisingly I can't find one .. lol.
If you are going to download, try mkv animes + embedded subs. I did other test with some other animes and noticed that not are all the same. Although all of anime have audio/video/subs sync issues but some of them only has .5 seconds lag. Some 2 seconds, extremes are 4 seconds. I would assume that whatever is causing this, is how the anime was encoded but when I play it with Gingerbread, not a single sync issue happens. So its either the ICS leak or MX Player.
Thanks again. Looking forward for your test results

Just downloaded ninja scroll episodes to test. The files are mkv with English subs. Everything seemed to be in perfect sync, but hard to tell on a subtitled video.
Just so you know, these are 65mb files so they're not of the highest quality but everything runs fine in terms of audio sync.

I still have few hours to test. Thanks for spending time and testing it

Ok so I downloaded ghost in the shell 2.0 and it's 720p mkv format. The mx player would not use hardware encoding to play it, but it played via "sw encoding (fast)".
I loaded up the subtitles and let it run. I skipped several places every 20 minutes or so to test. It played with no issues, audio and video were in sync with the subtitles.
You may want to try software encoding (fast) on your mkv files, maybe that'll work for you as well. You can adjust the encoder in the settings.

Ok I will try to do it. Maybe tomorrow since I already flashed back to GB. I only used software decode (not the fast one). But its weird that you don't have HW playback. hmmm. All my videos played in HW acceleration fine, of course except the audio/video sync.
Hmm ..
I actually found something interesting. MX player has issues with some subtitles with our leak ICS.
I tried Dice Player which also uses HW acceleration and I don't have any issue with the same video.
I also tried other ICS video players that use HW and there are no issues.
So, i think its just MX player.
