[Q] Insufficient space on /system, why? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'va flashed my SGS2 with stock ROM XILA2, then I rooted it with S2Root.
The phone is rooted but if I try to write on /system I can't because there is not sufficient available space on partition. I never had this problem before. I tried also to change kernel installing SpeedMod K2-19 but the problem persists.
Any solution?

Did you mount R/W?

Yes, I did!

Can the problem depend on the repartition? When I flashed with Odin the XILA2 firmware version I used pit file and checked repartition option. Now the /system partition is about 512MB, is it too little?

There is never any need to repartition when flashing firmware for root.
..... or at just about any other time
Which guide in XDA advised you to repartition for root?

I repartition because I found .pit file in rar archive of firmware so I used it...
What can I do to solve the problem?

Do you mean the pit file method for repartition? Using a pit file is not going to change anything big, the pit file is almost same in all the releases.

Titanium Backup says "System ROM 528 MB (503 kB free)", is "System ROM" the /system partition?!?
If I use ES File Manager to control properties of system folder, current size is 496,27 MB but it can't say me how much space is left...

thats the size, try a full factory reset. there might be some junk left over files in there causing the problem.

You may have to flash a new ROM either through Odin or wiping system, data, cache and dalvik and flashing through recovery.

Yep, but most soft and hard bricks have occurred when using PIT. Many many posts.... No need for it, that's why I asked where on XDA did the advice come from? Most guides here will state not to use PIT or repartition in big red letters. OP never answered.
Edit: I don't mean for this to come out the wrong way, but, maybe OP should post his question where he got the advice from, maybe more experienced users with PIT there? If in XDA, maybe that forum thread?

Thank you to all for reply, but now I'd say what is the correct size of the /system partition? Is size of about 500 MB too small?

I'm pretty sure Samsung makes the system partition just big enough for a stock rom. Around 500mb is what it's supposed to be. If you want more space on system remove some of the bloatware or move gmail, maps ect. to data.
Dont forget to make a nandroid before messing with system.

But there's a method to increase the maximum size of the system folder?
Also, I can delete files that are system\tts not relevant to my language? I Risk of losing some useful functionality?

"out of space" pop up?

just flashed my friends bricked Vibrant back to stock with Odin. problem is when we try to install an app it says out of space and directs me to manage applications to make space. no matter how many apps i clear data on, it just wont let me install anything.
any suggestions?
maybe an easier way, but move everything to pc, format both internal/external, ODIN back to stock again, move only nec files back to phone.... what ODIN files did you use?
Dis you repartion in odin when you flashed back?

anything else?

pretty sure I Bricked my note...

long story short, I accidentally formatted the emmc through CWM. Cannot flash anything via ODIN nor CWM nothing sticks. It only loads up into the last rom I had on there and force closes on everything. Any ideas on how to unbrick this? Based on my readings, i basically deleted the internal sd card and screwed up the partitions i believe. can a pit file fix this? any insight will be appreciated thanks!!
What if you tick repartition when you odin. Have you tried that? Or Maybe someone will know how to dump the files you need in adb...

If you're still within the return window, you could always hard brick your phone and go exchange it. Pretend like you don't know what happened. This isnt the most honest approach but may be the easiest.

Hi all,
Hope your well.
Im having the same issue too when trying to install apps. Exactly the same message. just over 6GB available in storage.
Im trying to install friendcaster no luck.
Tried to install you tube too, no luck. I have checked data/apps and I have no Odex files in there. Also, I have not installed friendcaster before on this phone therefore there will not likely to be any odex files for that app.
I am on Omega Rom, which is deodexed.
Btw, where is internal storage gone? only see SD storage and ExSd storage.
Any help would be appriciated.
Thanks guys

Having odex files is the issue that comes to mind but if you have checked it and there isn't any related to friendcaster then u should try wiping cache n dalvik to see if that works.

Salaam bro.
Thanks for your response.
This may sound silly but I was trying to think back a few days ago if I had made any system like changes to my phone. I then remembered that in one of the settings menu in Rom Toolbox, there is an option to choose where to install apps. Auto, internal or SD card. I changed it from Auto to SD,thinking (logically) it would save internal storage. It turns out (so far)that this was the issue. I changed it back to auto and then I was able to install the app. Wierd I know. Im confused. I hant tried to install anymore apps yet so not sure if this is sorted for good but will keep an eye out.
Once again thank you for taking time out to respond.
Btw, all the best for Ramadhan!! (next month!!)

U shouldn't need to install apps to external as u have a lot of memory this time around n u can also use a lot of software to move game data to external sd and run them from there by Binding the directories. Anyways best of luck to you to buddy for Ramadan. Do remember me in your prayers. Tc. Fe Aman Allah

Backup - where?

Where are the CWM Recovery backups stored? I think I've looked everywhere but can't find them. They restore ok from the recovery view but can't find them in any file explorer. Most of them I have on internal sdcard but the clockworkmod folder is empty
EDIT: autocorrect mistake in thread title

I'm almost positive that's where I found mine a couple weeks ago, and I'm running 4.4...[EDIT: both paths take you to the same thing, just checked] It shouldn't matter what version, as per below.
An explanation as to why it's not where you think it is.
After 4.1 (correct version?) introduced multi user, internal storage is separated into numbered folders for each user, starting with 0 - the first user (ie usually only user on phones). Since CWM uses the root of the SD card instead of following this new format, most apps cannot find the backup since they access the 0 folder of int storage.

Safety Regarding Modifying Partition Layout

If I were to go about repartitioning the flash, what should I/would I need to do to preserve current partition layout, making sure I can easily restore to "normal". Obviously backup all the partitions, what else though?

I might be wrong but from what I read in other threads, repartitioning the SIII is not as easy as for instance the HTC Desire and might brick your device with a high probability. maybe someone with more experience could answer your question though.
Nvr do re partition in odin. just tick f reset time and auto reboot ONLY unless the instructions asked u to do else.

No, I think you misunderstand.
A. I wouldn't use Odin, I'd use Heimdall
B. I INTEND to repartition my device as part of a project I'm working on.
You are working outside the known universe for S3 users, I've heard of no-one else attempting repartition.
EMMC chip in this device appears to be very fragile, best of luck with your experiment.

Fragile; how so? I can accomplish what I want with loop files but I'd rather use partitions.

Try reading the hundreds of threads where people are left with a hard brick and odin can't even flash a pit, the title of insane bug for the emmc chip says it all. Also many posts by users of cache 'improving' software, again left with a hard brick after resizing a partition.
If you can change/restore the partition structure, without replacing the emmc chip, you'll be one up on everyone else.
