Hi all. New to the forums...watched the degrading vid before signing up even and am somewhat newby with phones. I've scoured this site, the motorola support site...which is apparently down til next week now...and a few other sites I came across via pages of google searching. I cannot find the answer other than doing a factory reset...which I really do not want to do as I have a LOT of apps and info of my phone. It should all be backed up via motoblur and the lookout app's backup. But I have months worth of scheduling info in there which will take me more hours to reenter...I reeeeeally don't want to if I don't have to.
Problem: My Atrix 4g is caught in a bootloop. While this is a somewhat common problem, mine seems to be a little different. I'll point form details below and will greatly appreciate any help I get. If you need any more info, please let me know.
-caught in a boot loop. It boots regularly, but reboots about every 2 minutes. There is a good 30-45 seconds where I can access apps etc. However, I don't think that the phone completely finishes its boot cycle before rebooting.
-Occasionally...and I believe ONLY after I reboot via the down volume/power button method...the phone will stay on long enough to receive notifications from the web. Facebook notifications etc etc. Most of the time it doesn't.
-If I had to guess, it's trying to boot some app near the end of its boot cycle that it doesn't like. And I'm assuming it just doesn't like this app's latest update as I've never had this problem before.
-Prior to rebooting via volume/power button, I was getting an error message which I wrote down...and have since accidentally erased. It was something along the lines of "system process failed" and I then had the option of force close or wait.
-Every 3 seconds or so, my notification light flashes purple. It typically shows green during startup, red for notifications...I've never seen purple before.
-I downloaded almost every app I could over the last 10 days of 10, 10c apps from the market.
-I haven't opened most of the apps, and haven't had any problems with any apps that I have opened
-Most of my apps are set to auto-update. Therefore, I don't know which app update could be the problem...assuming this is the problem
-I'm in the process of removing my apps 1 at a time every 2 minutes or so...as I get a chance during the final stages of the phone's rebooting. So far, 10 apps in and no success. Only another 200 apps or so to go. ugh...
Any ideas? help? booze?
Thanks in advance.
How about wiping the cache and Dalvik cache? This will not affect or uninstall any of your apps or personal info.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
Thanks for the advice and quick response. I don't seem to be able to clear the dalvik cache without rooting the phone...is this correct? Went thru the market for dalvik cache cleaning apps and they all require root. My phone isn't rooted.
ok if your not rooted does this mean your on a stock rom? is it possible one of these 200+ apps are a virus or malicious? root your phone use titanium backup to backup all your apps and factory reset or go try and get a replacement and keep your sd wich will have the backup
I had a boot loop problem too once. Turned out to be a defective SD card. removed it and it booted. It could not be read by any PC either so it was definitely dead.
Hey guys, has there been some kind of stealth OTA or something today?
I was using it and suddenly a program started force closing, so I reset the phone. Then, practically everything started force closing. From google maps to facebook to acore and everything.
Also, I somehow got an ad in my notification bar! >:O
I've been running a recent build of infectedROM. Anyone else experience crashes and ads suddenly?
I'm now trying to damage control by backing up all my stuff if it'll work at all I'm having a hard time making sure all my SMS messages are backed up since everything keeps force closing
I would try reflashing the ROM without wiping data. Wipe cache and system, but not data, then see if you can back up everything. Then go back and wipe everything, and start over from scratch.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
Sounds like an app you downloaded. I had those ads before and someone recommended 'airpush detector' from the market and I had 3 apps that pushed ads to my notification bar. They were uninstalled immediately.
We're comin from a pure power source.
You try fixing permissions? For the force close issue anyway...
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
Sounds like a 3rd party app is causing you issues.... What rom build were you on? 3.0 latest is R80 other is 3.5 builds
Have you been using synergy?
I had this same isuue on my last 3d, I had to finally reinstall the RUU, i believe to fix it
Sounds like you've been.....infected!! Lol sorry had to. Boot into recovery and wipe dalvik.
I have read the threads of Prime owners that had a problem with random reboots. I was lucky that I hadn't had this problem. Actually the only issue I've had is that my GPS is completely dead. However, I notice that after the .14 update I am experiencing periodic reboots. Has anyone else (that didn't have a reboot problem before the recent update) notice a similar issue?? Thanks
My Tf prime was working fine on. 13 (but has random reboot on. 11)
after upgrade to. 14, Reboot issue comes back, so I downgarde to. 13 again....and it works great again

Make sure you do a cold boot after any firmware update. (hold vol down and power button). Ultimate solution is to do a factory reset. Especially if you experience problems. DO not install any apps. See what happens with factory. Then slowly install your apps from market and go from there.

I've tried the reset/cold boot (using the power/volume down option and also the reset below the SD card slot). Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how do I do a factory reset? I've seen reference to it, but can't find a "how to" anywhere. Thanks again.
nope, mines was fine on .11 then when i updated to .13 i have the reboot and sleep of death issue. .14 update did not cause any issues yet...so far so good

Go to settings, Backup and reset, Factory data reset. Note, this will erase all your data, and your apps, but, if you have your tablet set to backup your Google account, once you enter it again on the initial setup, all the apps will restore to the tablet (Minus saved games)
If you are rooted, you can take ths further with Titanium Backup, grabbing saved games and whatnot. Also note: If you have ANYTHING of value, any docs or pictures on the internal memory (Shows as "SD Card), back all that up to a Micro SD, or somewhere in the cloud with Box.net, Skydrive or DropBox.
Finally, if you have any apps that need deactivation on one device before activating on another, such as CoPilot - HAHA - (A navigation app, hahahahaha... sorry, the tears were rolling on that one) better deactivate BEFORE you wipe the tablet.

Nothing will work for a few of us with the new update .14. Doesn't matter what you do reboot will still happens.
here is a thread i created (for the op) is basically the same thing you are experiencing

Actually you have a few options.

The options are few if you have persistent rebooting at .11, .13 or .14. But at least now you HAVE options. Thanks to the good folks who figured out how to downgrade FW, and apply any level that works best for you (though I am truly puzzled why suppossedly identical hardware experiences the wide variations of outcome on each sucesive update. We cannot blame software installations (except in a few cases, such as the guy who turned WeatherBug Updates off) since quite a few folks have done a Factory Data Reset, with no change)
Search for a link to the thread that shows how to apply whatever version is most stable on your particular tablet.

Tried the factory reset...it did the reset, but it was to ICS and the .14 update automatically. It also started downloading all my apps automatically. I did another factory reset, but this time didn't enter my google account, the apps didn't auto download, but the freeze/reboot is still happening and if anything...it's worse. My tablet is all but useless now.
I downloaded ver 9.4.2.14 and now have more reboot issuses than I had before. Would reboot 1-2 times a day now reboots 2-3 times in a 30min time span. How do you go back to ver 13 was better than.
sorry to hear that manly..
I was fine with .11 and the .13 gave me bad battery and .14 gives me constant reboots. I followed advice about doing a cold reboot and it made the freeze/reboot issue worse. So like you my Prime is almost useless. I'm going to try and save my pics and then may try a factory reset. Which IMO we should not have to do if the firmware was done correctly.
I do need to look for the post about rolling back of a firmware that works.
Like everyone else, the .14 update has horribly ruined my device. Typing 1 email, the device rebooted 3 times. This should be a bigger deal then this! Does anyone know of a more social place to voice these complaints?

Just been experimenting - browsing seems to trigger my reboots (tried Chrome, Boat and stock) as does the XDA app, but just watched a couple hours of YouTube and no reboots. Did see a couple of strobing artifacts in the upper left hand corner when browsing videos.

I have been facing reboots since my first version of firmware, can't recall which one.
But after 2 firmware updates, now .21, I'm facing more reboots than ever. Let's make ASUS fix this for good.

why have you resurrected 3+ threads with this exact same post? its not needed on all reboot threads. one is good enough.
reported for other posts to be deleted. this info is only needed in one. spamming all reboot threads with this won't solve problem any faster.
good info but dang, don't keep reposting it in all reboot threads spanning very old firmwares..lol
I don't mean to spam but to reach out to everyone who is facing reboots, but lazy to search properly. ASUS doesn't seem to take this seriously at all. I gave them the steps and was asked to contact the local support instead.
Do the math, after so many firmware revisions, still facing reboots.
Can you help try the steps and let me know if it reboots for you as well? Thank you.
i have been really really happy with this phone ... until recently. stock ROM. not rooted. over the past couple weeks i've been having problems where the phone dialer doesn't find a name i type in. says "unknown recipient". then i have to click the people icon and manually find the person ... the contact list take FOREVER to launch. once i do this, it works from then on for some period of time. also when i go to read a text it says loading for a LONG time. seems like the android native apps (contacts, messaging, etc ...) is having some problems. not sure, but all this seems to be happening since installing the last OTA update.
A restart of the phone fixes the problem but only for a short period of time. any help would be appreciated.
Wipe phone completely. Start over. Should fix your errors

The phones performance between stock and rooted MeanRom 4.4 is like night and day. HTC should be embarrassed for the way the phone runs in stock condition, it really boggles the mind given its hardware.
Anything that doesn't work with Meanrom?

Its really not too long of a process with the right tools. Backup apps like Titanium Backup, My Root Backup or this newer one im been using, App2zip. I use to be like you. Spent why too long setting things back up. Now i use App2zip for my user apps and flash right after i flash a new rom. Upon bootup, all my apps are there. Not recommend to do with System apps..hint hint.
I bought the Galaxy S3 two months after the EVO. EVO was driving me nuts. I kept the EVO anyway. Can never have too many devices, right?
Running Mean 4.4 rom now and its like night and day from the first two months with the EVO. New advancements from Zep with multitasking and all the incredible work from all the devs in the community, im enjoying the EVO now.
S3 for sale... Just kidding.
This latest update fixed google wallet but looks to have made all of the google apps buggy in the process. Hopefully they'll push an update to fix it soon, but in the meantime rebooting the phone when it acts up will help temporarily.

Yet another reason to leave well enough alone lol
+1 for mean rom, I don't think I could go back. Part of the reason I like it besides the obvious fact that the phone runs way better the ota updater is fantastic this is the first rom I have used that has had it and probably won't go back to a rom without it. I actually have an update downloading in the background now. You deffinty should hard reset and since you have to do that anyway might as well root.

I was about to start a thread for the exact same problem! I too have been hesitant to root my phone out of simple laziness... Maybe I'll shoot an email to HTC and see what they say. Definitely related to the latest OTA though.

I have had the same issue since the last OTA update, and have tried a few things with limited success. I've tried removing all contacts, and resynching, backing up and clearing the data from the messaging app, soft and hard resets.
Of everything, the soft reset seems to have cut down how often I get this bug. Interestingly, my brothers phone has about the same frequency of the issue, but neither of my parents phones have the problem.
So HTC responded and said to try rebooting into "Safe Mode" and if that doesn't work to perform a factory reset. Here's the email:
If you have backed up your information and cleared the data from Phone, Messages, Contact Storage, and Dialer Storage, but you still have this issue, I would then recommend that you test your Evo 4G LTE in safe mode. This will disable third party apps and processes from launching when the phone is powered on. You will still be able to make and receive calls, text messages, email, and use the internet.
To put your Evo 4G LTE into Safe Mode, use the following steps. Be patient with these steps, you may not get it into Safe Mode on the first attempt.
Go into settings>power and uncheck Fastboot, then power off your phone.
With the phone powered off, press the Power key on your device.
When you see the first load screen, press & hold Volume Down key until OS loads.
"Safe Mode" text will appear on the lower left of screen to advise that you are in safe mode,to get out of safe mode just restart the phone.
If you can access these apps fine in safe mode, this would indicate some kind of conflict or interference from a third party application. You would need to rule them out by uninstalling the apps until you find that the phone is working normally again.
If the issue persists in safe mode, I would then recommend that you back up your data and perform a factory reset. If you would like assistance with backing up your data, please let me know and I will walk you through this process. The reset will restore the phone to a "like new" state. All personal data such as emails, text messages, internet bookmarks, photos, videos, music, documents, settings, call history, market apps, and any contacts and calendar entries that have not been backed up to a PC or server will be erased. Data on the SD card is not affected by the reset.
To reset your Evo 4G LTE, use the following method :
***If you use Google Wallet, please perform these steps before you perform the reset***
-Open Google Wallet application
-Tap on Menu
-Tap on Settings
-Tap on Reset Google Wallet
1. With the device turned off, press and hold the Volume Down button. While continuing to hold this, press and release the Power Button.
2. When the factory reset menu appears, then release the Volume Down button.
3. Use the Volume Down button again to highlight FACTORY RESET, and then press the Power Button to select it.
I hope that these steps help you to gain access to these apps properly again, Stephen, and I hope you have a great day!

Im going to have to disagree with people and say, being stock along with all the updates have really improved my experience with sense 4. I've owned this phone since launch and really hated its performance. I eventually sold it and got a GS3 for 2 months and now I eventually want Galaxy Note 2. Anyways I sold the GS3 in a attempt to raise money for the note 2 but came across a great deal on a stock white Evo, which i now own. Let me tell you. This baby is silky smooth in stock form, much better than anything I've been flashing.

It's definitely no fun when your phone stops working as expected, and I'll be glad to help you get your phone back in working order! To best assist you I'll need to know what phone you have, but from your description it appears you have an Android powered phone. With this is mind I believe that we should try wiping the phone's cache partition. For your convenience I've attached a document that details how to perform the wipe. This does not delete any critical data from your phone like contacts, so you don't have to worry about losing any data. If this does not correct the concern please let me know, and also include the serial number for your phone so we can research the situation more deeply. Thank you for being a member of the HTC community, and I hope you have a wonderful afternoon!

It appears that clearing caches/app data doesn't help with the problem, but rebooting into safe mode (press and hold vol down during the splash screen) does fix it. I believe this means that there is a 3rd party app causing the problem. Now to start uninstalling apps till the problem fixes itself. Ugh. Considering the problem doesn't occur half the time this will be a difficult process... Anybody have any suggestions on how to quickly figure out which app is causing this aside from uninstalling them one by one?
Check for cpu hogs
It sounds like u may have a cpu hog or a poorly written app. U might be able to tell what it is by checking your battery usage. Setting ngs/battery/battery usage
Biggest usage should be screen and android system ect.
If not, there may be a some apps to check that for u.
but if it comes to it, after the factory reset, start with the necessary apps, stock plus Google apps. After that do ur widgets, wait a few hours, add a few more, and wait.
This way u can limit new processes and boil it down to a few.
Good luck
Interested to see what app you are using that's causing issues. Good luck as well.
Not sure what is causing this to my Nexus 9 lte on t-mobile. It has been working great then today this message will just not stop popping up.
I've trying going to the apps area and uninstalling play store update, clearing cache but it's tough to do since when you click ok on this message, it immediately pops right back up.
I've tried wiping dalvik and cache in recovery to no avail.
I have even nandroided back to the stock with root I created immediately after I rooted using the wugfresh program.
It boots fine, then I install the programs I need to install and update the apps. All works fine. However, when I reboot, this message comes back again and pops up immediately again once I hit the ok button.
Please help. I figured once 5.1 came out, I would just wipe and flash the 5.1 but the way this is going is pretty much rendering my tablet useless since the message is always popping up.
Please help. Thank you,
Whiteice

Same here. Untouched stock 5.0.1 ROM. WiFi only tablet.
Might be worth mentioning that I got a google app update today before this started happening.
What the **** Google!!!!!!!
Tablet has important work stuff and its unusable now.
Weird. I just had the same thing happen on my MotoX (2013) yesterday, but my N9 is fine.
My MotoX is rooted, so I manually deleted all gapps from /system/app/ and /system/priv-app/ and /data/app/ then reinstalled SlimRoms minimal gapps package. I never did figure out what the exact problem was.
---update---
Rats, I spoke too soon. Got this error again on my MotoX today. Fortunately, it only seems to pop up once a day, so I can live with it for now.

mine is doing this today too. first time I've reboot in a while and it started up after the boot. im on stock with fire ice kernel. musta been a google play service.update that broke something.
I had this happen today: constantly popping up making tablet virtually useless.
tried various things, wipe cache/dalvik, reset all app preferences, and others.
This is what finally worked:
Settings->apps->all->Google play services->manage space->clear all data
This is a rooted WiFi N9 running stock 5.01
Hope this helps!
i cleared data and cache of just about everything and unistalled everything i could (tedious task trying to hit the screen before the anr pop up). i just used this as an excuse to switch from stock to AICP - i'm on wifi only. so no biggie and i got a better more customizable version of lolli. still PIA that it even happened.
This just happened to my N9 wifi this morning. It rebooted on its own (stock but rooted) then the message came up. The problem I had was that the message wouldn't stop so I couldn't access anything in the Settings. I tried the no wipe with Wug's but no change. Trying a wipe mode. What a PITA. Heading to google forums to see what's been reported.
The problem is being reported at google products forums--happening on N5 also. So far, wipe with toolkit (even using the factory reset mode) hasn't done anything. On to checking which recovery I have and do on tab reset.
Happened again this morning!!!
Tablet startup was unusually slow then i was greeted by gapps crashing over and over rendering the tablet unusable.
I'm starting to think this is caused by data corruption. Filesystem or nand problems?
Lollipop is killing lots of nexus 7 devices, I'm worried we might be next!!!

I followed jetfin's suggestion and cleared all data and it worked!!
A Google search reveals that a lot of people have had this issue for the past couple of months.
It saddens me to see the state that android/Google are in.
Edit: looking at battery usage, I found that the dex2oat utility has been working too hard. I'm guessing the problem is with ART corrupting the play services update. Either a ROM issue or a bad update from Google!!
Works!
