My G-Tablet was working great for the last 6 months, the day I bought it, I flashed it with Cyanogenmod 7. Last night I was listening to Pandora, while reading Manga. I set it down and went to sleep.
When I awoke the Tablet was off, still plugged into the AC adapter. And refused to boot. After trying to get into the recovery thinking somehow it bricked itself, I noticed the screen would flicker ever so dimly. So I ripped the back off and unplugged the power thinking maybe it's not really off, maybe it's locked.
Alright, so now after holding the power button down for about 30 seconds it starts booting, I see three birds, the words android, the Cyanogenmod logo and then it goes black. After about a minute of that, I assume it booted. Still starting at a completely black screen I pressed the volume button + and - and I hear the beep boop. Alright so it booted. Where is my VIDEO?
I hold down the power button for a minute, I press the volume buttons but no sound. Ok, it's off I'm guessing. Lets boot again. This time nothing, completely blank screen, until it gets to the Cyanogenmod Logo. The video comes on for about 3 seconds then off again. About 15 seconds later, it comes on and I see the android robot riding the skateboard for about 3 seconds, then black again. It again finishes booting, I play with the volume buttons and I get the beeps. But absolutely no video.
One other thing, is that while booting. It ALWAYS turns on the video for the little robot on the skateboard for 2-3 seconds.
Has anyone experienced anything like this before? I'm totally at a loss, I really hope the GPU is fine.
I miss my tablet
If it turns out to be a hardware problem you should have a year long warranty from viewsonic. Someone who has had experience with the warranty process will have to tell you whether or not they will deny your claim if it arrives with CM7 installed (I haven't dealt with them). If you are able to NV flash before sending the tablet back in you should be golden though.
Thanks for the advice Bret.
I had the tablet sitting on my desk, I booted it up, still a black screen but I could hear the volume beeps. I let it sit there for about an hour, running on battery. And wouldn't you know. The screen came on. It's been working perfectly so far, I can reboot, shutdown, let it sleep ect. Not a single problem. I would absolutely love to know if it was a software glitch, or what. Seems my GPU is fine, rocks 3d apps no problem.
But I know if I don't know what caused this, more then likely it'll happen again and I'll flip out.
Open your gTab up and reseat the cables going into the LCD panel.
You say you have been running CM7 for ~6 months? have you had to reflash you system at all in that time?
The reason I ask is that I have had issues of the system corrupting itself over time, and almost every time I had reflashed, everything seemed to go back to being fine. Who knows... maybe its time to do a backup and flush the system for good measure..

My friend that I bought the Asus prime for, asked me if I could take a look at his prime.
Here is the screnario:
Listening to radio station app, screen went to sleep while the radio was still playing and he tried holding the power button down and nothing worked to reboot or wake up the prime. The Prime was left playing to drain down the battery. It has all its recent updates (.15), not rooted, and not unlocked. When I looked at it, I charged it up, I can see the light and turned green to full battery status. I can feel the prime vibrate as I hold the power button, I tried volume + power hold, tried the hard reset with the paper clip hearing the click next to the sd card slot holding it for 10-30 seconds. The laptop can see the folder in the prime as i hold the power button and also disconnects when i power down. ordered 12-28 from best buy so the return window has expired and its a BC0K serial number.
Anybody find a solution with a black screen prime that just vibrates and can be seen on the laptop before I send it for an RMA?
Was there any shock to the device? A small bump or anything, it sounds like the ribbon cable for the screen has become disconnected, there are some reports of this on the forums.

This + have you went into recovery?
maybe try draining the battery again then charging up. ive seen a few post issue like this. if screen connection didn't break, then letting it drain again and charging up might fix it. good luck!
Actually, the prime was already drained maybe a total of 3 times. There was no shock to the device as it was working with the radio app on and when it was being listened to while it was on the bed, the screen went into sleep and could not wake up no matter what button was being pushed so the prime was left to drain its battery. My friend didnt know how to reboot, so he decided to left the battery to drain. Could the radio playing + sleep of death + battery drainage caused the permanent screen sleep? Too bad I dont have the micro hdmi connector to see if i can isolate the screen as the problem.
yup the micro hdmi would help a lot probably. But if your PC recognizes it I suggest you back up data that you need then try to do a blind factory reset so you can get rid of any non oem app installed including that radio app if any of them is whats causing the screen not to turn on.
1. Hold volume down then press and hold power.
2. When you feel it vibrate (this could take up to 10 seconds if the tablet was already on) wait another 5 seconds and then release both buttons.
3. After you release wait another 5 seconds (dont wait too long here or it will reboot on its own if you dont select anything after about 10 seconds) then press volume down 1 time and volume up 2 times.
4. The tablet will factory wipe and after another 10 seconds it will reboot.
If the tablet still wont turn on then you got another issue and that isnt caused by the radio app or any other app.
Didnt work. It just vibrated and the screened stayed black... Im wrapping this puppy up and bringing shipping it to the repair center. Thanks anyways.
Vibrates when power button is held but wont turn on
My Prime also has the basic problem. I use it daily for about 3 to 4 hours, reading replying to e-mails and web browsing. While I was reading, the volume started going up on its own and I noticed that even after I put in standby mode, the battery discharged so I shut it down completely.
After that I could not turn it on. When I hold down the power button it vibrates bit the screen does not come on even after I fully charged till the led turns green.

Had to RMA back to Asus for them to fix the display and it took about a week. Warranty covered it, but if you do RMA ask them to ship you a shipping label. You shouldnt have to pay for shipping it to them for a manufacturer defect. And take pics and videos of the tablet and packing for your safety. They just need the tablet and nothing else. Good luck
Asus is F-ing with my endorphines...
I've had my TF201 since March 30th. Been using it for 1 week and it suddenly went dead (nothing on the screen, no vibration if I held the power button down). Tried everything I could find on the forums, it didn't work so I sent it to repairs (not immediately, cuz I had more important stuff to do). They kept it for almost 3 weeks, got it back this last Monday (May 21st) and... it died out on me again yesterday night (after just 3 days of use, congratulations ASUS technicians!). I was simply browsing and I clicked on the icon to increase the luminosity to the maximum supported (IPS+, I was charging it at the time) and the screen suddently went black. Like "nothing visible on it" black.
After that, I tried numerous times to reset it (including the volume+power down, according to the indications in this thread) - all I could get from it was the vibration as if it starts. Nothing else popping up on the screen. I plugged it this morning into my computer and it got somehow recognized, cuz my W7 tried installing drivers for it (even tho it had recognized the tablet again after it came from repairs and I already had drivers for it installed) but failed with the error "APX - no driver found".
I've had enough. Two months already and only one week and half of actual use. It's pathetic, ASUS needs to be taught a lesson, so I'm calling Consumer Protection in my country and the European Consumer Protection Comission. All the forums that I've surfed are filled with reports of broken units and ASUS will just tell you "if you have a valid warranty we'll repair it for free". I DON'T ****ING NEED regular repairs every 2 weeks!!! I need a functional tablet that I can use or give me my money back!
I'll post the results of my tribulations here...
I had a user that suffered the blank screen.
When you think it's presumably on. Try a paperclip to the reset hole on the left side. His came back up at that point and hasn't done it again since.
Never had this happen on mine.
Had and still have an issue today. While driving earlier yesterday, I was listening to music in my car with phone connected on headphone jack. It made a buzzing noise( that came through car audio) , I disconnected and removed battery. I replaced battery and phone will not turn back on at all, will only show both Samsung logo's then go black screen. The phone will only power up for a total of 7 seconds from initial power up vibration on any combination of buttons,or even using a JIG
which went right into download mode.
- If I plug into power source , phone will just vibrate.
- I removed battery and replace, both Samsung logo's will appear then turn off.
- If I hold volume down + power button and place battery in, it will go into download mode. In this mode I can hit volume down to restart but it will just stay on black screen. Also if I hold these buttons down and do nothing the screen will just go black after a few seconds.
- I can also put into download mode to hook up to ODIN using same method and pressing volume up, but will say downloading then shut off.
- I've tried holding down volume up+down and power and it will not go into recovery.
- Odin with recognize it for a second (say device plugged in) and start to download files then it will say device unplugged after a few seconds
I've been looking at unbricking and unrooting threads with no luck. Any help is appreciated.
I don't know about the buzzing sound, but the rest sounds like a dead battery. Are you sure it's charged or that your charger didn't die on you? I don't believe phones brick after the flash is up and running.

Yes I'm 1000% percent sure its not a dead battery and even had it at AT&T warranty center this morning having them look at it. I was trying my luck even though its out of warranty. This issue is like none I've heard, because of the fact that phone actually powers up and I can get into download mode within those 7 seconds, but will shut off after. I've timed it till it powers off.

Am having this same issue with my girlfriends phone just as of a couple hours ago. It's completely stock and just recently received an OTA update a few days ago, she showed me bragging how she can watch videos and do other things at the same time now knowing how much I want a Note lol, she's had zero issues with it other than the battery getting very hot while charging a week or so ago and seems to be very slightly bulging now that I've looked at it. Out of nowhere today as we're walking through a parking lot and she's carrying it in her hand, not even using it, she says something is wrong with her phone and hands it to me with it vibrating every couple of seconds and not reacting to any buttons. I take the battery out and when we get inside put it back in and without even pressing anything it goes to the Samsung logo, black, animated Samsung logo, then turns off and goes back to vibrating every couple seconds. I look up the button combination for recovery and download mode and all that, I try recovery and it does the same vibrate every couple of seconds but never goes to recovery, and if I take the battery out, hold down volume down, then put the battery in it comes up with the warning about installing ROMs and all that, weather I press volume down or do nothing it stays at that screen for maybe five seconds then turns off and the only way I can get to the download mode is to take the battery out then press volume down. I have the Sprint Samsung Epic 4G and the batteries aren't the same but are very similar, mine is just shorter and 1500mAh, hers is taller and 2500mAh. So for the heck of it I put hers in my phone and hold it enough to where it connects and turn on my phone without issue, it boots up and shows 70% on the battery, I now have it plugged in and charging the battery at the moment with no issues. I put my battery in her phone and held it till it connects and it does the same Samsung logo, goes black, Samsung animated logo, then turns off BUT no vibrating anymore. If I press ANY button though as long as it's being held it vibrates every couple of seconds and if I hold volume down while I connect the battery it goes to Download mode but can't do anything and it turns off after about five seconds same as before, still no recovery access either. Heard that there is a power button issue with this phone and for the heck of it I've wiggled and pressed the power button with no charger or battery connected for around half an hour just to see if I can make it better, but no luck.
Hope to hear a solution to this. I would take the back cover off and clean the power button but I'm not sure if that would void the AT&T insurance, not going to try till I know I can get away with it without them knowing because if I can't fix it it's getting sent off for repairs.
EDIT: And sort of following captemo's suggestion I took a metal box, laid a hoodie over it for a bit of padding, then moderately bounced the phone on its power button side (without letting the power button be pressed/pushed, by letting it hang over the edge of the box) for a minute or so as if thinking the power button was stuck pushed in and I was trying to knock it back out, then put its battery back in and what do you know it turns on fine now. Weirdest way I've ever had to fix a phone, but hey it works now so the girlfriend will be happy.

Sort of is about right, glad you got it going. Many will complain about the button still clicking even though button is actually stuck. Many have cited some very simple sounding instructions for cleaning power button contacts with minimal deconstruction of phone. Using swab and alcohol. Run a search in q&a, sure you will get something.

I tried the button with no resolution. I just went ahead and jumped ship and bought Note 3. Thanks to everyone who tried to help out
Hi, my Note has been running happily for months now, I was running the latest version of Super Nexus before the thread closed, and I was using a custom kernel, UBER I believe, its been so long since I've had to mess with it. For the record I have never overclocked, I refuse to.
Anyway, every two or three months my phone would start to get unstable, lots of apps installed etc etc, and my screen would start to flicker when I was on the home screen, sometimes the screen wouldn't wake up from the lock screen so I'd have to hit the button a few times, random reboots every couple of days, things like that.
My phone is so stable for the first couple months though, that I never bothered to change anything, I just wiped the phone clean, wipe all the cache etc etc, then I'd reinstall the ROM, and then reinstall the kernel, and bam, it was good as new again, fast and fresh.
I've done this a few times now since May 2013 when I first got it stable.
But now it has done something weird, scary even.
Its been getting buggy lately as usual, but I've been to busy to reinstall everything, so I just kept dealing with it, its been buggy for over a month now, and tonight it randomly rebooted, but didn't boot fully.
If I take the battery out and leave it out, then put it in, it automatically buzzes once, then the Samsung logo shows up, disappears, and if the room is dark you can see the screen light up black, flicker slightly, then turn off. Pushing the power button again does nothing, it stays off.
If I plug the charger in, the battery icon shows up with a spinning circle in the center, then the screen goes dark and the phone buzzes repeatedly every 3/4 of a second, buzz buzz buzz buzz etc, seemingly endlessly.
If I hold the two volume buttons and power button down, and release when the samsung logo shows up, so I can enter into TWRP, nothing special happens, the logo shows up, disappears, screen goes dark.
BUT, I did some searching and decided to try using ODIN to go back to full stock att. So I took the battery out, hold down the volume- button, put the battery in and voila! I get into download mode! I push the volume+ button and its starts waiting for the target (or whatever its called).
BUT, then the screen goes black and its dead. So I thought maybe just the screen is turning off, so I set up ODIN, started download mode, plugged in the USB, and the computer recognized it and made the appropriate sound, but as soon as the screen went dark the computer made the 'USB disconnected' sound and said device installation failed. So I am assuming its a bigger problem than just the screen, the entire thing turns off.
Its late now and I'm frustrated and don't know what to do, any help would be gladly appreciated. Hopefully there are still people using this phone.
Thanks again,
-Tom
Stuck power button.....flick the back of your phone a few times to jar it loose. It may sound and feel normal but try anyway
Or
Check for bad battery....... Does it appear or feel swollen? Very Commons need to replace after about a year. $8 on Amazon.

Thank you for your response, this makes sense. I have flicked and played with the button, it appears and sounds to be working properly, but I am going to take it apart tonight to be sure. I've had it apart before, I had to do the GPS fix, so I won'tbreak it, but thanks for the new direction to go in!
I will report back.
Also, I have 4 batteries I alternate with and they all have the same effect :/
Thanks again!

After some research on faulty power buttons specifically, I realize this this a fairly common problem, and as such I apologize for my not realizing this sooner.
But its fixed! I took it apart and got it to work by lightly tapping the button with a small screwdriver, I then did some research and learned you can sometimes clean it with rubbing alcohol. I didn't have any rubbing alcohol, but another quick search determined that vodka can be an acceptable substitute. So I poured a shot of grey goose and went to work lol. I put a small drop right on the button and clicked it lightly but repeatedly for a minute or so, then I blew it out, then dried it with 30sec or so in front of a space heater (its winter here, -19f, brr), put the battery in and voila!
Very happy now, if it acts up again I will try actual rubbing alcohol, but if that doesn't do it then their are guys on ebay who will replace the button for $15-40, so I guess thats better than nothing.
Thanks again!

Really hope someone can help me here.
I rooted, and put CM10.2 on my phone a month or two ago (don't play that much with ROMs, etc), but fancied a change from stock.
Anyways, it's been fine (although battery life not quite as great as before, but hey ho), this evening just got a WhatsApp message, dropped the notification bar down, clicked on it to open Whats App, and the phone rebooted... And then continued to just reboot over and over after 2-3 seconds (showing the i9300 Samsung logo with the red ! in the top left).
Removing battery stops this obviously, but weirdly when I put the battery back in boots straight away, and continues to just loop like that. Holding power, home, vol up/down makes no difference (been playing with this for about an hour now, and searching other peoples solutions, someone said 5 times wait, and release). Just can't get anything other than this loop, just weird that I can't actually turn it off either.
Suggestions please?
Thanks Gunja
Booting as soon as battery is inserted indicates power button sorted out, try wiggling it or seek a repair.
Yes I believe thats the case, as I have actually got it into the "Accept different OS" mode, stays there for 2 seconds and reboots. Nothing seems physically weird about the power button.
It did the sudden die thing a few months back, and I returned it to Sammy UK and they fixed it (due to 2 year warranty) in 2 days. It's still under 2 years old, so will give them a call. Was rooted before, but didn't show the red ! in the left left. Hope that they don't mind that, as this does seem to genuinely be a physical hardware problem not software.
If you just hold the power button on the S3 when it's booted, just it just turn off eventually? How annoying, 2nd problem with it in the last 4-5 months, wonder if will get another sammy when upgrades due in a couple of months. Lets see how their support is again this time round!
Hi,
Just few minutes ago my brand new phone just broke on me. I was holding it in my hand, locked screen, like minute later I tried to unlock it to no avail, screen just stayed black. There was a sound when I touched it by the fingerprint sensor, but no light up from behind the screen. I tried holding down power, then power+volume up, phone only vibrated, no reaction on the screen. I've connected it to the charger, and now it seems to be in bootloop - screen is turned off, and every few seconds phone vibrates. I've managed to somehow turn it back on once, phone booted to system, everytthing worked just fine, then I locked screen and it just stayed black, now I can't reproduce that, can't even turn it off, it's just vibrating every so often. Did it really brick in my hand? Software of Hardware? Everything worked just fine, maybe battery was draining a little bit too much for my taste, (15-20%/hour with screen on+lte/wifi) but 120Hz refresh rate+bright setting and AOD turned on 9am-9pm could do that. Do you guys have any suggestions, or I'm expecting trip to the service?
Sorry, but i cannot guess any reason. I am stumped as this bootlooping shouldn't beb happening... Very strange. May be its better to show it to service center guys.
Btw, i had tried this on my previous android phone to shut it down, like a hard shutdown. I had pressed power + volume down + volume up keys together to shut it down completely. Basically by pressing all the 3 keys. If you want to try, you can try it. I have not tried it on my GT, but had used it on Oneplue 2 and Honor View 10.
Hope your issue gets resolved asap...
Okay, I've contacted support via livechat, they told me it's definetly just software glitch, and to resolve this I have to wipe dialer cache (?) and all system settings - I did it, everything worked just fine, but today, again, same thing happened. First time phone just died in my hand, second time it was while listening to music via Pulsar, today I was just sharing wifi as a hotspot, phone randomly broke connection and would not unlock, but still I could tell it was on, because of vibrations and sounds. Not a software glitch after all? If I manage to unlock it I'll just recover it to factory settings, we'll see if that helps, but I don't like the sound of that.
What apps are -you- installing?
Launchers and power management apps are prime suspects...
Otherwise, mobo failure. It may be firmware but how far do you want to take it?
It should run fine out of the box.
Last time I played with launchers was with good old SGS about 5 years ago, only app out of ordinary was AccuBattery to check that SoT drain, but could it make such a damage without root privilages?

Accubattery isn't the culprit...
