We have a large shipment of Samsung Galaxy 2/Nexus being delivered for business employees and need to do the following;
Prevent people downloading apps
Flash the same settings on all phones (perhaps using a custom rom?)
All will be synced to the same Google account, I appreciate that the prevention of apps can be solved by rooting and removing the market app but we can't void the warranty so unless there's another way around it, that method is out of the question.
Any ideas would be appreciated
Cheers everyone in advance.
well u need to root to remove he apk from the phone ...and dusnt the stock one cum wid the same settings ????

I'm aware that the only way to remove it is by rooting but it's like I said, we can't void the warranty on the phones so it's out of the question. I just need a way of blocking the phone users from using the market and a way of rapidly deploying this onto 40+ phones.
If I didn't have the warranty issue to worry about then I would root all the phones but unfortunately I can't

Is this what you're looking for? http://www.androidfreeware.org/
Thats not paid apps eh?
Would like to find a alternative way too, no Market in Denmark without Rooting.
from experience:
find the app you're interested in... contact the owner.. ask them if they'll sell it to you 'offline'..
find some way to pay them.. usually Paypal
they'll send you the .apk
use HTC Sync or ADB to install via a USB cable
you're done
Japan isn't on the list of countries where 'paid-for' apps are available in the Market so I've had no choice but to use this technique with mostly positive results.

I can download .APK files to my mac - but how can I et them onto my phone?
If I plug in my phone to my mac, I can see the SD card, and can copy the file over to it. But how can I get the phone to see and run the App?
HTC Sync as far as I know is PC only ( not Mac ) - what is ADB?
cheers
Download a file explorer from the market. This will allow you to see the contents of your SD card and run any APKs you have on there (though you will need to switch on the option to allow non-Market apps).
Regards,
Dave
Bit new to this - how do I allow non-market Apps
cheers
Menu -> Settings-> Applications -> Unknown Sources - just tick this to allow non-Market apps.
Regards,
Dave

Hi All
I want to use my android device with the wi-fi connection at work.
The sad part is I can only access internet via a proxy.
I need to find a way preferably an .apk , via which I can set a proxy.
And the biggest problem is that I have a non-rooted device.
Thanks

As far as I know there isnt an apk for that.
What version of android are you on?
In 2.2 if you goto wireless and network settings and scroll to the bottom then you get proxy settings...
If you dont have it...try wolf Xperia TW v007.1 rom, I am on that and am looking at the proxy settings now.
I too need them to access wifi at work...
Try this out:

Your phone must be rooted though....

I think x10 doesn't have iptables modules installed , I've tried similer apps called proxydroid if I'm not mistaken and although the apps itself is easy to use, the problem seems to be lies in the x10 itself, can anyone verify the iptables module exists in x10?
Thanks everyone for your speedy replies, but the major problem is that I cannot root the device, as its a company asset (will need to take approval from 101 people), so am looking for a way to do the same without the need for rooting the device.
And I cant believe Android has not implemented this yet!!!!
How do they expect to make a presence in the corporate sector, I mean already the sales force in my company are using iPads...its a shame coz you can do so much more with android as compared to iOS....

Thanks, it seems that this is the only option available as of now
First sorry for my bad English.
I recently bought an android smartphone (Sony Xperia U), and had to change the original kernal to root my device. Since I made this change, I have kept some very serious concerns about this. In short, I fear that this process endangers the security and privacy of my unit. I would love to hear the words of an expert on the subject, because I do not know it very well. My questions are stupid maybe, but hopefully respond correctly to me to be more relaxed about it!
1) It is possible that this modified kernal allow anyone access to my phone, without my knowing it?
2) It is possible that this kernal developer has access to my photos, videos, messages or emails?
3) It is possible that the modified kernal act at some point so malicious spyware as a maybe?
4) It is possible that the developer enter codes or programs in kernal allowing remote access to my machine or its applications? (as camera control, control the messages or calls etc)
Well, I know it sounds weird, but I worry a lot with my privacy and security!
Thanks for helping, really!
Its not man rooting affects ur warranty not ur privacy...

1) insecure kernel will allow for easy root access
2) No
3) No
4) No
You seem to be very paranoid about this
.. Better stick to Stock kernel...
And don't send me p.m. For such threads...

Hello everyone!
I am new here.
I just bought a Sony xperia Z. I am one of those people who have some privacy concerns specially concerning webcam/voice/location/and other personal info on my phone.
I read a lot about rooting your phone. I'm a bit lost now on this issue. Does it help me alter app permissions so that google play for example can't reach my personal info? If not, what can be done?
Do I need to root the phone? If so, what's the easiest way to do that?
I just want to have full control over what my apps do in the background & what permissions they are given so that I rest my mind "google an't getting my business".
Thank you all!

Not so much with rooting but there's always the chance of damaging something.
I have a Samsung Tab E for sprint. I know this might be not the right place but I couldn't find a section for that particular device. the issue I'm having is it has only one software one it or app which belongs to a Taxi company. when I try to go to settings it tells me security policy prevents access to settings. I also did a Reset for the tablet but same thing I also reinstalled the software on the tablet but came back with the same thing. I can add a guest account and see all the default apps for any samsung tablet but can't root or do anything because the main account is the one that has the one taxi software. Please any ideas how to remove that and be able to root and install Rams and put it in debugging mode ... etc.
Thanks.

Could you be a bit more clear? Why are there two accounts on the device, what accounts, etc.
