Media Share eating battery dead! - Motorola Droid RAZR

Here's the story: running the stock ROM rooted. Batt has been fine until I loaded up my 32gb card with some movies AND decided to move my files in my DCIM folder to my internal DCIM folder to clear some room. The movies are on the external card. I did that and cleared the external DCIM of pics and now I'm getting a hard battery drain. Batt meter shows 'media share' as top dog now and it's draining the thing fast! From full charge to dead in less than 3-4 hours!! So I put the files back that I moved and it's STILL doing it! I mean this sucks!!!! So now I've deleted BOTH DCIM folders hoping the thing will reinstall them and clear them hoping this might fix this %^@&*^%%$ issue. I'm so pissed. This is my second battery issue with a *&@(&% RAZR. Had to replace my first one because the batt would instantly die,bam dead. Full charge to nothing and I didn't even have it set up the way I wanted it yet! This is my second RAZR and now IT'S fking up!! I so want to just call them and tell them shove their "thin" POS where the sun don't shine, I want a different phone!!! What do I do???? Why the hell is it acting like this? Don't like me removing pics from it's stupid DCIM folder? WTH?
PS, also forgot to mention now when I go into My Gallery, it sits there and then force closes on me. I've reset it, I even went and updated to the new unofficial release and it's still fking up!
Do I have to do a entire reset of my phone now because I moved some pics off the frickin phone?? WTH is with that???

I've have this same issue in the past. For some reason the Razr has an issue syncing the media from your SD card. The easiest solution? Take all the media off your SD card. The best solution? Flash a custom rom as I've never run into this issue again running a custom rom.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA App

I may...may have figured this out. Went to the battery section and checked the memory useage stat to see which files were listed under 'media share'. Then I went to applications and cleared the data of every one of them I could, including My Gallery. I also cleared Dalvik cache in Tibu. Then I went back to gallery and re-set it up, letting Motocast sync ALL of the files I listed off my home PC, which were quite a few pics, vids etc. Let that run till it's done. It seems to have worked. The phone isn't as warm as it was, and the media share is dropping percentage wise from the batt stats and looking at the meter, it's stablized quite a bit now. So I think I may have it licked.....you gotta be Sherlock Holmes sometimes when dealing with technology.

[Q] Battery Drain - Usage Media?? 2.3.3

Right, im on 2.3.3 with my X10, and ive noticed in the battery usage section in the menu that something called media has 21% so far, even though ive not used any media at all, and in 38 mins from being fully charged im down to 85% battery lol.
Anyway this media thing says when i click on it
Cpu total 11mins
Cpu Foreground 6mins
Keep awake 7 mins 54secs
included packages, DRM protected content storage
Downloads,
Download manager
Media Storage..
So out of all that anything i can do to stop this?
Do you have many media files (music, photos etc?) on your card ?
It might be that the media scanner kicked in to index / search around. If this is the case, maybe this post could help: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15037379&postcount=35

aye i do, quite a few pictures and alot of music on there, But nothing changed so im not sure why it scanned again, plus it ate the battery like mad from a fully charged battery to 85%
No software is perfect...
In my case, the scanner hogged the CPU the first time I booted the phone after update, gallery worked very very poorly, freezes, etc. Eventually it finished and now it seems ok.
If it keeps doing it, just reset, and if it insists - just add a '.nomedia' file and it should not scan the big folders anymore. Please read more about .nomedia file limitations here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=626997
Right cheers for that, ill give that a shot and see what happens, was just annoying to see my freshly charged battery disapear lol

What's going on with the internal drive?

I have found on several occasions that the music on the "internal" drive is suddenly completely missing. Cannot explain it; obviously, can't "pull" the internal card, haven't flashed anything recently.
Anyone with a clue why this happens. I have had images periodically vanish from my EXTERNAL sdcard, too, but this seems to accompany pulling the card.
I've been switching batteries and I'm starting to wonder whether part of the internal RAM is not genuinely nonvolatile or something.
UPDATE: I believe I have figured this out, it's related to flashing a new recovery. See post #13 below.
Are you not seeing it in your music player library? Any chance you changed a setting for where it looks to see the music? I don't mean to insult you , I just ask because there was an issue before of dupes showing up in the music library and it was happening because of those settings.

I likewise would have asked that question first (Occam's razor and all that). No, I don't see it on mount to PC or in my file explorer (and I see everything else on the drive.) It's as if something went in there and wiped the directory.
Dumped into the innertubes from my Rezound
some PB98IMG.zip files will erase internal memory in install.
Are you just doing a battery pull or are you actually shutting the phone down before swapping batteries? I've had hard times with SD Cards(and flash memory in general) without shutting down the phone first. I know it's an extra few seconds but it may save your information.

Good point. I'm pretty sure I haven't pulled the battery ever when the device is on (except when completely crashed, which hasn't happened in a long time). I never used to pull the battery with the power on EXCEPT that once in a great while the phone boots normally when I was trying to get it to go to bootloader and I pull it as soon as I see the splash screen. I cannot tie any data loss to doing that (this stuff vanished after I flashed a new ROM with the 4-in-1 power menu enabling reboot to bootloader, obviating the need for a battery pull altogether; and I haven't had any crashes on the new ROM/kernel, and besides, all this stuff was there after the flashing).
Do you think in that moment internal memory would be affected in such a selective way?

What he said. Installing a new kernel will cause the internal sd card to get erased, so if you are installing a ROM that requires a new kernel, that would explain the vanishing trick you are seeing.

I haven't installed a kernel yet that touched the internal sd card. And I'm on ICS right now which requires a kernel install...
Yeah, the music was there *after* I flashed my ROM and my kernel. And I always remove the .zip file so that the bootloader doesn't actually try to re-run it. The one thing I have noticed since before I rooted is that occasionally after any battery removal, something comes off the internal (and sometimes the external) memory. The only things that typically disappear though is music and/or photos, i.e. media.
I just can't figure that part out.

That's almost scary. You don't use HTC Sync do you? I'd hate to think an underlying process from Sync was doing you in.

Nope. I'm pretty sure it's unrelated to connect to PC. I actually have a spare 32gb card and a spare 16gb card and every Monday I use MS Synctoy to copy my external memory and internal memory to hard drive, thence to the external backup cards (I know, it's belt and suspenders, but it also means I never lose anything ever).
The only commonality I can come up with is the battery. Saturday I tried out my 2750 mAmp battery and kept the device off charger all day, then Sunday I switched back to my stock battery. Monday the music was there, at some point yesterday it simply wasn't (and I hadn't touched the battery).
Have had these type of issues since I got the phone. Can't quite put my finger on the cause, but since I back everything up, and since otherwise I love the thing, I'm just trying to find a pattern.
I had the exact same problem, one day, none of my music was there anymore. I finally rebooted and it was all back.

I believe I have figured it out.....when I update my recovery (as I have done every time drelisdee improves RA Vigor) it happens. I just happened to read on another thread about the CWM recovery update for the Rezound that running the PB98IMG wipes the internal memory (as somebody above in this thread suggested).
It's possible flashing kernels this way does, but clearly flashing a new recovery will mess with the internal drive.
Good to know.
Thanks everyone for helping to solve this.
By any chance did you use the make more space option in the storage card settings? Using that option support erase cache, but on the stock rom it end up erasing my pictures and music.

BINGO! Yup, I just happened to do that, thinking it would only clear cache, and that was shortly before I discovered the missing music. I am running the stock ROM, only it's deodexed so I can put mods into it. That must be the explanation.

copied files to sd card and phone apps are hanging

Hi folks,
has any of you seen this?
I have the atrix 4g, I have a 16GB sd card, I copied some files (like 2GB in mp3) to the sd card, I safely removed the device from my computer, then from the atrix status bar I changed the usb mode to none and it mounted the card just fine, but now when I try to open apps like gallery, music player, files, or even winamp, they will just hang and I have to force close application.
Also, it drying out the battery very quickly, is like is hanging in trying to read the files.
What can I do? I don't want to have to reset the phone.
Any ideas?
Hi, ok I found the process taking all the cpu, is android.process.media, I dont know what is trying to do, how can I tell why is hanging?
I cant stop it either, is it important?
Thanks

I've had this problem twice. I think that the Atrix's software cant handle so much new media at one time. The first time it happened I ended up preforming a factory reset, which fixed everything (Make sure to back up first!) The second time was when I was adding lots of music again, and since I'm doing this constantly, I ended up unlocking and flashing to CM7.
hmmm yes this ain't my first time with this problem either and i had to reset as well. but that's too much work, i have a mod for the lapdock and having to reinstall is a real pain. but anyway I've manage to kill the media process with the kill -9 command using the terminal emulator as root and t this released everything else, gallery and music are working fine. i still don't know what will affect if i don't let the process start again, i might look for an app that would help me prevent it from starting , but if it causes any pain i will try maybe another flash like you said .
thanks
ok, I might have found another solution, may be too prompt but wanted to share.
I kept searching on google and found more options, since killing the media process wasnt very useful, eventually it would start again and hang everything. Basically, go to Settings, Applications, manage applications, all, tab on media storage and then Clear Data, go back tab media share and clear data, then reboot the phone.
After reboot the media process will start again and will scan all drives, I can see it taking something between 20 and 40%, the common at 25%, is way below the 60% that it was using before, so I gave it a second chance and let it running for a while.
Indeed, after some minutes it finished the rescan and cpu went back to 0% on the media process and I was able to open gallery, music, etc.
So, I kept all my files in the sd card, didnt have to factiry reset and the media process went back to normal.
Hope this is permanent, and hope it works to anyone else with the same.
cheers

[Q] Battery is @ 77% with 22m off charge, help please HAH!

So a bit of background. I'm running:
ROM: [ROM][AOSP][JB][4.1.2][JZO54K] SuperNexus - I777 - BUILD 5
Kernel: Siyah - JELLYBEAN - ICS [v4.3.3]
Currently phone is telling me media is 82% of my usage and I have absolutely no clue what that could be. I'm not downloading anything.
I've had the battery for over 1+ year so I know I'm due for a replacement but this usage rate seems ridiculous.
Any thoughts? Thanks friends.
Media scanner going crazy. Download an app from the play store to stop it from acting wonky. Yes u can find the name of the app. I believe in u.
Yeah one night my media scanner went crazy and made my phone feel like it was about to melt. It was draining the battery on the charger. I didn't download an app to stop the media scanner but I don't see it scan anymore. Now I just use an app/widget that scans when you press it.

Had this problem a long time ago..
Try adding a blank file named .nomedia on the internal and sd card root...
That fix it for me. Good luck there hope this helps
Sent from my SGH-I777
I had that issue, media scanner would not stop. I took my 32 GB SD card out, moved the files I needed, reformatted it (didn't use quick format, did it the long way), stuck the files back, and put it back in the phone. Now no more media scanner running always. I had read somewhere that the file structure on the external media card could get messed up causing that issue.

Probably an overactive media scanner (android media process). I have the same problem since updating to the stock official 4.1.2 XXLS8.
I'm not sure what the solution is. You can disable the android media process (application manager -> media storage -> select and disable). However, if you do so then not only do you lose access to media files in the standard music and video players, but you also lose all your sound files for ringtones, notifications, email and SMS alerts etc. So as solutions go that one's a bit rubbish...
Rescan Media Root is also ineffective. I don't know why, possibly something to do with Jellybean that prevents it from working.
I've seen many posts in different forums about this, it seems to be a common issue with the 4.1.2 JB releases. Some say it is partly fixed in JB 4.2 but that isn't much use to us right now.
You could try reformatting your memory card as some say that corrupted files cause the problem. However, others say this 'fix' is unsuccessful and the excessive scanning continues regardless.

Try this workaround:
Copy you DCIM folder to your External SD Card. Empty Internal SD card's DCIM folder (files, not the folders, just leave it empty).
Set your external SD Card's DCIM folder to default for pics & video.
Reboot.

Sadly no change for me.
Emptied DCIM on internal SD, camera was already set to external SD for storage. Rebooted, and Android Media Process is now busy hammering my CPU again.
This is so frustrating. I lose 50% battery in ten hours, and I'm now scared to actually use the device at all when I'm out and about for fear of losing power altogether. Google have known about it since October - see this issue thread.
I had similar issues after I've installed the same rom on my phone. After a few awful days of fiddling with it and endless cycles of recharging, I've decided to do a clean reinstall. After I did a clean install last night, everything seemed better. The battery wasn't overheating, wasn't even draining that fast. During the night (5 hours of sleep I got, actually), BetterBatteryStats had shown me that I had only ~5 minutes of awake state vs the 5hrs of deep sleep.
But! Today after work, my battery started going crazy again. Left work with ~35% and I've discharged it completely after some 30-40 minutes of Ingress play (gps + 3g + screen on). Something's awfully wrong with this version, no fix worked for me (except the mediascanner issue which resolved itself after I did a clean install).
Any and every advice is more than welcome.

Try freezing gallery as soon as it boots, check with betterbattery stats if media scanner stops when you do.
If it stops it within 50 seconds or so make sure you have no files at all in internal DCIM, only the -empty- cache folder inside.

Hello,
I have also installed JB through Odin and facing same battery drain issue. It's finishing like a in a day without using any high app ( FB, Browsing, Twitter etc)
Please help me or I'll need to roll back to ICS .
you're kidding me right?
20 hours with 35% left on battery and 44% screen usage?
Bluetooth on, avast and who knows what more crap you got there. Every app running in background drains your battery, but again, you are looking at a 3 % / hour drain.

No, I am not kidding. it was just opened to test and received a reply on twitter once the wifi connected. If I am not using my phone and let it without open anything. Next day it will be at 70% which does not seem right to me. ICS was much better, I was using wifi and 3g as well almost all day than it used to go be on 40-50%.
