I answered this same question last week, as follows:

Reading the recovery log error. First we have to understand what is happening. After you select a ROM .zip file from the custom recovery, the updater-script file is processed, found near /META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script.
At the start of this updater-script, and is common in many OTA official .zip file updater-script files is a check against the the type of device currently being used. This checks the device build.prop identification locations, ro.product.device, ro.build.product, etc and for this specific ROM attempts to verify the device is the CDMA version of the EVO 3D, known as the "shooter".
If this were a GSM ROM and were to check for the GSM version of the EVO 3D, it would check for the phrase, "shooteru", as that is the name given to the GSM version of the EVO 3D.
Since, the device currently being used does not match, "shooter", processing the ROM .zip fails. This prevents the developers from getting complaints that flashing their ROM "bricks" a device, or causes a users issues/problems. The prevention mainly means the user is not able to load the ROM.
Hope that helps provide some technical details behind the recovery log and specific error being experienced!

Either you are trying to flash a Rom for a different phone, or you have posted in the wrong forum.
Do you have an evo 3d?
Where did you download that Rom?
It looks like you're trying to flash a Samsung Rom....
Also if you have a 3d, you should consider using 4ext recovery

I think he is trying to build a ROM for his devide but his usind the wrong META-INF
You need to use the update zip from a rom made for your device not the one you are porting it from.
Also make sure you mod the build.prop in /system to have all the info for your device..

Sure, you can copy /paste all you want. No promises anything will work. The updater-script uses "edify" scripting language is fairly simple. There are quite a few good guides available. I usually find them by typing edify guides into google.
The syntax is fairly straight forward. The best way to trouble shoot is when the recovery throws an error, check out the recovery log file as it will generally provide details as to which line of code had the error and what type of error.
The recovery log file is usually stored at /tmp/recovery.log and /cache/recovery.log.
In my opinion every ROM developer should become familar with this simple scripting langauge and have the ability to troubleshoot the issues with the recovery through the log file.
If you have specific questions feel free to reserach and post them up with your research. Plenty of ppl can help clarify or suggestion approaches.
Hope that helps!

Rooting.

Okay, So I was trying to root my i717, and followed the steps there on the general section which I think is very outdated. I was able to flash clockworkmod the one also on the topic. I also have to superuse zip file ready to go to root it. But everytime I try to flash a rom it keeps giving me an error like "RO PRODUcT BUILD PROP QUINCY ATT ERROR" or something like that. And I am not sure how to go on about this error.

Do you have the latest version of CWM? Also, you may want to flash TWRP recovery, it has proven to be faster and more reliable (at last for me).

Try TWRP its more stable and a lot of ROMS now have issues with CWM. And if you flash TWRP it will give you the latest superuser installer. Do that and you should be str8. Make sure its TWRP 2.5

I can, my advice is never use programs, just copy our proprietary files and our bootimage, change updater script to match pur partitions and done, if not booting logcat and post it, if that doesn't help pm me to give further assistance, maybe we can builds from source, if you want to try sync source( some gbs) and use mdmowers device tree with modification to fit slim

I can't directly help you in this but I can point you in a good direction. You first need to make sure that the "ported" rom has the right kernel(+drivers), radio, and bootloader for the Inc 4G, and not still the one for EVO 4G.
Hope that helps.

[Q] Unable to flash custom rom

I'm new to this whole custom rom thing and i would like to ask for some help. Right now, my phone is rooted and the bootloader has been unlocked.I have tried to install paranoid rom, cyanogenmod and carbon rom so far. I have tried to CWM and TWRP and every single time, i get an error. First time i got the status 7 error. After some searching, i learnt that i have to delete a line of code to get it to work. After i did that, i tried to flash again. This time, i just got an installation aborted error. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
I downgraded my phone to C6802 and as a result, lost my LTE. But this was the only way i knew to root my Sony Xperia Z Ultra running 4.3. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks guys.
Getting LTE back
If you guys don't know how to help me, at least can you guys tell me how i can get LTE back? I dont mind losing root and relocking my bootloader. I just want LTE back. And yes, my phone has LTE capability. I've used LTE for the past 2 weeks.

LTE will return when you get on the correct ROM. as for flashing custom ROMs read the threads, the instructions are normally quite good
CM11 and the new carbon (any rom that is based on 4.3 or 4.4) need to be on 4.3 before flashing them

I just looked at 2 or three and the instructions weren't too bad...
Start at .xxx
fastboot a boot.ing with recovery if you don't have it
wipe as needed
flash .zip from recovery
reboot
Other than that read the sticky by @LordManhattan and read the thread for the rom

[Q] Need help! Samsung I9300 wifi refuses to work - new rom? new kernel? please help!

The wifi on my Samsung S3 GT-I9300 device won't work. It just toggles on/off/on/off when I attempt to turn it on. I purchased the phone with the following already installed on it:
CWM
SuperSU
Android Version 4.2.2
Kernel Version - (says here in the about screen) 3.0.31-611730
Build number - Omega v45 - XXUFME3
I've done a LOT of searching here on XDA but I just find myself lost in a world of information. I found a video on youtube, but it's for the S4 and doesn't offer links to the correct files for the S3. Some have told me flash a new ROM and other a new Kernel, but because of version numbers, and not wanting to brick this phone... i'm not sure where to start...
Please would someone be willing to help me out? I am living in Honduras and the service I use is prepay here.. wifi is a HUGE money savings for me here. Many thanks to whoever is willing...
If it is an i9300 then download a stock firmware from sammobile that will work in your country (3G signal). Follow the guide in general forum on how to flash. Factory reset in recovery before first boot.
Test wifi before you install or restore anything, if still the same then it's a hardware fault.

Thanks for the direction!! I downloaded the file, however when I attempt to open it with WinRAR i'm getting this error message..
"! C:\Users\Heather\Desktop\I9300XXUGND5_I9300AUTGNE1_AUT (1).zip: Unexpected end of archive"
I did an internet search for other places to seek out firmware for a GT-I9300 4.2, but so many results come up speaking to a leaked version of Samsungs firmware. I'm not sure that's a safe route to take...
any ideas on what I might be able to do?

Unexpected end of file means you have a corrupt download. Just download the firmware file again. If all else fails, look for a post in the S3 General thread regarding a complete back to stock method.

So i've successfully flashed the stock ROM file that was provided to me in the link above by "Tkkg1994"
The versions and software in my phone is all different than before, but the wifi still won't turn on. I click the button to turn on wifi... it thinks for about 3 seconds and then just switches back to the off position.
Any ideas what might have gone wrong? or what I might be able to try now?
Thank you so much for all the help up till now.. I hope i'm giving out the right amount of thanks and credit to you all. I really hope I can resolve this!

Wifi is related to kernel if you have changed roms ( which also changes kernel) then most likely it is hardware fault you could try flashing just a custom kernel and if the problem is still there then it is most likely hardware issue.

Yikes. Two words I was definitely hoping it was not.
Well.. I suppose it couldn't hurt to attempt a custom kernel, so the next question would be... any advice on which kernel I should attempt, and how exactly do I flash a kernel?
Thank you again for the help!

You need a custom recovery(Philz touch), flash it through odin. Than download googymax2 and copy it to your sd card. Than enter in recovery mode and flash the kernel.

Is there some setting or something I need to change, or would just having installed these files fixed my wifi issue if in fact it wasn't a hardware issue?

Maybe a clean new install of your rom? In philz touch recovery select "clean to install a new rom". than install it. after that, wipe cache and dalvik cache
