The Android OS (latest release 4.0.3 and all previous releases) is missing an important function which is found on a Windows PC. That is creating a shortcut on the Home Screen/Desktop pointing to a folder or a file. A shortcut enables a single press or mouse click to open a folder containing many files organized for a specific purpose. Without a shortcut function in the Android OS, you must open a File Manager app and then manually search for the folder or file that you want. This can be a frustrating process every time you want to open something.
The most common shortcut found on a Windows PC is for My Documents. Another shortcut many folks create is for a specific folder or file for a job/project.
The following process can be used on an Android phone or tablet.
I have found two FREE apps in the Market that will create a shortcut on the desktop. The first one is Linda File Manager which can be found here:
https://market.android.com/details?...xLDEsImNvbS5saW5kYWFuZG55LmxpbmRhbWFuYWdlciJd
In my example I will create a shortcut on the desktop for a folder called DOCUMENTS. The steps to create a shortcut for a folder are:
1. Open Linda File Manager. Notice the default directory which is /mnt/sdcard. If you wish to create a shortcut to an external storage you must change the path to /Removable (for ICS).
2. Long Press the folder that you want to create the shortcut for. In my example DOCUMENTS.
3. A popup menu will appear. Select Create shortcut. It’s that simple.
The second app that I found that will create a short on the desktop is File Expert. This FREE app can be found here in the Market:
https://market.android.com/details?...t#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsInhjeGluLmZpbGV4cGVydCJd
In my example I will create a shortcut on the desktop for a folder called DOCUMENTS. The steps to create a shortcut for a folder are:
1. Open File Expert. Notice the default directory which is /mnt/sdcard. If you wish to create a shortcut to an external storage you must change the path to /Removable (for ICS).
2. Long Press the folder that you want to create the shortcut for. In my example DOCUMENTS.
3. A popup menu will appear. Select MORE. Next select Create shortcut on Desktop.
I am sure there are other apps that can do a similar function but I am not aware of them.
works in ES file explorer in the same way. Just go the the folder you want to create the shortcut to and long press.
Or Astro....works quite well too....
Thanks for the thread. I didn't realize there was the ability to do this. I use root explorer but cannot find a way with that program so I guess I will be using something else.

Your welcome. To me, this is a basic function that should be included in the OS. Maybe a future release of ICS will have it
+1 for es file explorer. Best ecplorer for tablets!

Androids designers did kinda have a desire for looking at the file system to be kept to a minimum for users. That's why you see a file manager in Cyanogen Mod but not AOSP.
And ASUS gave us one with missing features lol.

I prefer File Manager HD (Honeycomb) for ALL of my file management stuff. It has an excellent BOOKMARKS section which allows me to point to my custom directories.
I am using the Linda File Manager ONLY to create shortcuts on the home screen.
Is there a way to make shortcut for a lan share?
+1 for ES File explorer
How do people make a shortcut to a file on their Desktop using ES File Explorer when using sftp or Windows share. Everyone seems to thinks it works just fine. The only thing I know to do is make folder shortcut.. which isnt what I want.
I didn't know that.
I am going to test it.
Thanks

I see that it says it's capable of doing it in the description, but for the life of me I can't figure it out. With ES it was so simple, I don't mind a little work, and I really enjoy CM other software. I would be so thankful If you could explain this process to me. Also, does it add it to the home page of the CM launcher? I would imagine they work together, I've got the cleaner, the battery doctor, security, the browser, the launcher(testing), and everything else is seamless. I really appreciate the help, I feel really stupid for not figuring it out.
Edit: I might have it, adding the PDF files as bookmarks, is that it? Where are the bookmarks now? Also, if any of that other software is pointless let me know? Thanks again!
Just for S&G I have a ZTE Zmax with KitKat 4.4.4

With ES all you have to do is long press the file you want, then when the options come up select more(bottom right side I think) and the is a choice to add to desktop. From there you can move that icon to any of your desktop screens. Hope that helps!

I'm guessing I'm out of luck here, but anyone know if there's any chance that the Nook Tablet will somehow be able to read cbr files, prior to rooting?
There are numerous apps in the google app store that read cbrs, but I'm not sure barnes and noble will offer any. And if not- does that mean we're totally out of luck until someone roots the nook tablet?
Thanks in advance for any info anyone may have.
I don't know if this will help much, but I just recently found out that Calibre can convert CBR/CBZ to epub. The Nook Tablet will be able to read that with no problem. I have no idea how that would affect the comic (quality or size) or if we would be able to do simple things like zooming in to read it easier though. That's how I was planning on reading my comics for a while, at least until there is a root available.
CBZ files actually work
If you just drag over CBZ files they actually work on the Nook Tablet natively. CBR and CBZ files are just archives. CBZ files are Zip files, and CBR files are RAR files. To get a CBR working change the file extension to RAR, unrar it, zip the folder, and change the .zip to .cbz. Then just drag your new cbz over to the folders on your nook tablet and it should render the comic!
Huh okay, I'll try dragging some CBZs onto the nook and if that works, maybe I'll convert some more CBZs.
But man I sure hope this thing gets rooted soon. I'd love to be able to use the fancy features of actual dedicated comic viewers.
Anyhow, thanks for the info, I appreciate it.
I had no idea the nook read cbz's natively but I tested this and it works great.
I did it before reading this thread so my process was a tad different but this should work too.
Just connect the NT to your pc and move all the cbz's you want to any of the folders (i put mine in Magazines). After disconnecting, you can just go to your library and you'll see them all in the Magazines tab.
until there's a root out I guess I can use this thing as a comic book reader. Most books look great, some you have to zoom a bit in to read clearly, depends on the scans.
Look at the thread I was able to install astro right here in general then just sideload your favorite comic app
Follow these steps:
-go to http://comptonsoft.com/test/ in Nook Browser
-click "TGPS_launcher"
-open Notifications and select the Download
-select "Package Installer"
-Check "Unknown Sources"
-Now Download and Open the Following APKs just like you did above except now it'll let you install them
File Expert:http://db.tt/aYsJwQrd
Perfect Viewer:http://db.tt/aYsJwQrd
PDF-Plugin for PF:http://db.tt/jyf4DLbx
Now just open Nook Search and type in "Perfect Viewer" or "File Expert" to open the Apps. Copy your CBZs to your Nook like Normal and then just open Perfect Viewer to read them.
You can also install Amazon Appstore this way and install GO Launcher for more easy access to these Apps. For more info read the other Thread that is talking about this trick.

I use the method above, works perfect for viewing comics. Perfect Viewer is my choice, when you open the app just navigate to where you keep your cbzs and open them. Swipe to the left to go to the next page and to return to the file manager instead of pressing the home button (which returns me to the nook homescreen) just double tap the page your reading quickly and it should bring you back to the file manager

yep, got that. but since nook reads cbz's natively that is way way way way more work than necessary. especially since the native reader is decent and is connected to the shell of the OS.

I personally find that Perfect Viewer has a better experience when it comes to Comics and Manga because of some specialized features. I really like all the hidden controls that you can customize because it makes for more of a seamless experience.

Agreed 1000%.
Apps like Perfect Viewer were created specifically for reading comics and offer fairly specific features to enhance the reading experience. Whereas the Nook's native method of viewing comics is just a your basic image viewer. It does the job, but in the most generic, serviceable way. The bells and whistles of the actual comic viewing apps tend to make reading comics on android devices much more enjoyable.
That's my take on it anyhow.

ok ok ok i'll give perfect viewer a go...
any other ones worth trying?
Android Comic Viewer is fairly decent.
And Comic Reader Mobi is excellent, though a tad pricey. Last time I checked it was 14.99 or so, which is probably more than it should be. But it's a very well made app. It allows you increase the size of very specific parts of the page (like just the dialogue bubbles) rather than just zooming into the entire page. I find that far less distracting.
But honestly, Perfect Viewer will probably suit your needs, well... perfectly.
I'm using Comixology's app on my NT. I just did a backup of the apps from my Evo 3D using Astro, copied the files from my SD to my desktop PC and then copied the files over to the NT. Using a file system app, I just double clicked on Comixology and it installed without an issue. Works great!!
ComicRack Will Convert CBR to CBZ
I just converted all of my comics to CBZ as I wanted to be able to read them (sideloaded) when using the B&N OS. ComicRack converts the file types pretty painlessly. The B&N stock app reads them pretty well so if you're not set on keeping the format, using ComicRack is very easy (and free).
My favorite is ComicRack. It has a free edition, so all you need to do is sideload your comic files and tell the reader where to find them.

Hi. Actually I just found out that all you need to do is: zip the complete set of comic pages into ONE zip file then just change the suffix from .zip to .cbz and voilà! Your cbz file is now readable on the Nook. Cbr won't work though.

That's because CBRs are RAR archives. RAR is a proprietary format so using it in products requires licensing it and using proprietary libraries or plugins.
Android however supports ZIP natively and no licenses are needed.
Hey guys! Does anyone know of a widget or app (preferably an app) that will display ONLY a specific SUBSET of images/photos?
Most gallery apps, when opened, will go to a directory of image sets/folders which you can then open from there. I am looking for an app that will NOT give that option, but instead will ONLY display the 1-100 (actually I only want to display about 10) specific images/photos that I choose ahead of time.
Also, ideally, I would be able to have multiple instances with separate links/widgets that will each point to their own specific closed gallery.
Let me know of you've come across anything like that.
Thanks!

So basically what your saying is....
When you open Gallery, it shows folders X, Y, and Z.
What you want is an app that, when pressed, opens ONLY folder Y with no option to open X or Z. And be able to change it yourself so when you open that app, it shows folder Z without the option to view folder X and Y.
Correct?
A possible idea to make it so YOU can change what folder it opens but others can't would be....
It automatically opens a folder, "PicturesApp" by default. And the way you would change it is to go into something like Root Explorer, find the folder that you want to show pictures within, and rename that folder to "PicturesApp". So when you open the app, it looks for a folder called PicturesApp and opens that.
That sounds awesome. I'll give that a try.
I'm also considering building either html5 galleries hosted on my web domain, or maybe flash files that will open when clicked, but I will try your method first. Thanks!
Anyone have any other ideas?

Sorry to tell you but this is actually what Android itself is all about...
Flexibility and exentsibility
The app you are using doesn't have feature xyz? Well go to market and search for one that does have that feature
I know this can be kinda bad sometimes but it's the best thing of Android. You can replace almost everything.
And btw, the AUSUS file manager is way cooler than most 3rd party ones. Not concerning the functions it offers but concerning the design.
I haven't found any other manager that looks nearly as good as ASUS' one....
es file explorer can also access files over your network. Not quite the same as file sharing back and forth, but it does half of what you want!
I'd honestly prefer dropbox for smaller files. I've got a ton of referrals so I have 20gb of space so that's plenty to upload/download whatever I need in either direction.

Look for CIFS and Samba on the market. Most solutions require root though. I personally use CIFS manager (on rooted device). Without root there are a few file managers and players than can open files from samba shares.
Look for "File manager HD" on the market. Its free and theres no setup required on the PC side.
Just share a folder like you normally would and your prime can easily access (and bookmark!) it.
I use it to access my 6tb TVshow server, plays everything directly from it.

Just got cifs working on my prime with ics with the kind work done by folks here, using the the cifs.ko and md4.ko module here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1442928
Being a noob, I just couldn't work out how to push them to the prime, but managed it fine once I set up ES file explorer to do all the root work. Got a useful tip on a page somewhere's there before I got cifsmanager working, about loading both modules on the one line in the the cifsmanager settings

hi guys
i was just wondering if i can place a shortcut to a folder i have created in file manager or posabily a document i have created in the word processor on my home screen.
thanks
Yup. Download ES File Explorer. From within the app, long press on any file or folder and select "shortcut" to create a shortcut on your homescreen. ES File Explorer is great. It lets you do tons of other awesome things too, like stream video from a remote folder and extract the contents of compressed files. It's a great app.
