Keep meaning to ask this and keep forgetting. My Prime goes into Balance Mode automatically throughout the day, and I assume it's a battery saving feature. Is there a way to prevent this from happening and keep it in Performance mode always?
not really. its like that by default. if you rooted, what you could do is install Ezoverclock app from developement section. this will give you an overclock. it changes your Asus power settings. with this app. your performance mode will be 1.6Ghz. your balanced mode will be 1.3Ghz(Asus stock performance mode), and power savings stay the same at 1Ghz. you can also change the values for each mode if you wish. all you have to do is install this app, if rooted, and that's its. now your default balanced mode will be 1.3Ghz instead of Asus stock 1.2Ghz. works very well and simple to install and use.

This isn't a battery saving feature--your prime is most likely rebooting when you aren't using it, and when it resets it returns the power settings to balanced (default). Hopefully they will fix the reboots for good before long

Thanks, so if i have it on 1.3 the screen will be crisp like it is in performance mode, even though it's on balanced?

on Asus stock, the screen is crisp on balanced and performance mode. its only on power savings where it decreases the screen quality. but yes, with root and Ezoverclock you can set balanced to 1.3Ghz. actually its set to that by default. so if the device ever reboots or whatever, it'll still be on 1.3Ghz. with that app performance mode is now 1.6Ghz. unless you change it to 1.5Ghz or something. its customisable to what ever you want Asus stock power mode settings to be.

you could probably make something with gscript or scriptmanager to accomplish that. the files you meed to make the script point to is in /system/etc I believe.
on another note, I think it doesn't matter what power mode you in when display is off. all modes will go into low powersavings then kick into deep sleep. no advantage over the other, as far as display being off goes. I would think. you can get a free app, here in xda, called better batter stats to see how your device performing with display off and you could also get free app called CPU spy to see how long your device stays in different speed frequencies.
Think I have a solution for short battery life for Nook! (Really for any android device)
The problem has been that the Nook Tablet does not go to a Deep sleep (even if they say its fixed its not). Every night I have to charge the Nook battery because it goes from 100% to 90% overnight. If the Nook sits all day with no use the battery will drop to 85%. Almost a 20% decrease in power in one day of no use. By the second day battery is down to 50% and forget it if I use the Nook.
This app seems to solve the problem!
I downloaded a free app (Google App store) called “CPU Tuner (rooted phones)” you need to be rooted but for most of us here this is not an issue.
This app allows you setup CPU speed, WiFi and other settings for different states the Nook may be in.You can setup several triggers but I only used 1. The problem is not just having the Nook go into Deep Sleep but to turn off other functions that hit the battery e.g. WiFi and sync. With this app you are able to tell the Nook to go into Airplane mode as well as turning off all other features that may consume battery life. Below is my setup and findings.
State 1: “On Power (Plugged in)” WiFi on, Sync on, airplane mode off and CPU set to 1020mhz Governor set to interactive
State 2: “On Battery” WiFi on, Sync on, airplane mode off and CPU set to 1020mhz Governor set to interactive (same as above)
State 3: “Screen off” WiFi off, Sync off, airplane mode on and CPU 600mhz Governor set to conservative
State 4: “Screen Lock” WiFi off, Sync off, airplane mode on and CPU 600mhz Governor set to conservative (Same as above)
With these settings (and having 3 nooks with CM10 to test) here are my numbers
test stared around 10pm
Nook 1 started with 76% batt (CPU Tuner not installed)
Nook 2 started with 85% batt (CPU Tuner not installed)
Nook 3 started with 90% batt (CPU Tuner installed)
checked battery life at 8am next morning.
Nook 1 65% batt
Nook 2 75% batt
Nook 3 91% batt (Yes it went up 1%)
Later in the day with no use 8pm still 91%
Loaded CPU Tuner on all three Nooks started test at 10pm. (Day 2)
Nook 1 started at 96%
Nook 2 started at 74%
Nook 3 started at 83%
Checked battery life at 8am next morning.
Nook 1 ended at 96%
Nook 2 ended at 75%
Nook 3 ended at 83%
As you can see this is a big difference then losing 20% power overnight. Since I have Screen Off and Screen Lock as the same trigger I don’t lose power if I am just checking batt level or the time.
This is a MUST HAVE APP. easy to setup and makes a big difference.
You can also setup it up so that if you are on the battery the CPU is at 1008mhz which will save battery life while in use and when plugged in CPU can go to 1020mhz giving you full power.
Sorry for such a long post but I felt it was good info for the users.

I do know it's a problem in some ROMs, and often a problem along the way during development. I think it's grocely unfair to suggest it's a general problem though.
I'm running a CM10 build from 1231 and I have not problems what-so-ever with battery life! I hardly loose anything while on standby (wifi off). I do turn it off manually, and I understand that with this app I can have it done automatically which is very neat, so might use it because of that. The processor speed adjustments works just fine anyway in the ROM i use.
It's great to know this thing exists and does work if I want to try a "work in progress" ROM more extensively. So once again :good:
The "battery-drain while asleep" problem got fixed since early December (e.g., Succulent's v12/08 build).
Also, I simply turn off WiFi (using a WiFi on/off widget) when I am not accessing Internet, and my NT's battery consumption while asleep has been well below 1% a day (comparable to that of my Google N7).
Finally, for those who are interested in battery consumption management tools, I find Battery Juice Defender (which I use on my Samsung GS-II phone) reasonably effective yet easy to use.

I love ALL of the work that the developers have done and I think I have changed my ROM about a half a dozen times because I can't figure out which one I like best. But compared to my wife's Nook with just the B&N ROM her battery could last days where my battery only lasted 1 day.
Please; I did not mean anything insulting with the comment and the fact that these developers can put together such solid ROMs is saying something about their skills.
How I found this App was from posts here where users were saying that they had to turn off WiFi. Trying to make a WA or KA (WA = Wife Approved and KA = Kid Approved) I know that going in and turning on and off WiFi was never going to happen.
When installed the CPU Tuner and found that it was going to do this automatically and on top of this battery life goes from 1 day to several days I had to make a comment. Only after a few days of my kids using the Nook with the CPU Tuner they made comments about how long the battery lasted. Using these ROMs and CPU Tuner made the Nook 100% WA & KA and now wife is using Nook with the Hashcode ROM and I have heard no complaints. Happy wife, happy life.

Can you post screenshots of your settings from the start, there are some things in your OP that i can't get to setup for testing purposes, indeed the battery of my nook using @succulents ROM 4.1.2 final drains battery considerably while sleeping.

I have uploaded the screen shots. All settings can be changed after loading so if you select the wrong item its not a problem.
I try to keep it simple, You can have more then 1 configuration but as you can see I just use 1. I set my user experience to Normal which can be changed in the settings.
Once you start CPU tuner you will see the current state of the Nook. You can select a different state. (Note the battery was at 52% which has been at 52% for about 2 days and just charged it this morning.)
Next you will see triggers; here you set what Profiles you want for different states of the Nook. Just tap in that section. I forgot to take a screen grab. But I have battery at 100, "On Battery" = Normal, "Screen Locked" = Powersave, "Screen Off" = Powersave and "On Power" = Performance. "Battery Hot" = Powersave and "Call in progress" = Performance. I really only need two profiles Performance and Powersave my Normal has the same settings as Performance and my Screen Off (which I don't use) has the same setting as Powersave.
Next are the profiles. tap the profile you want to edit. See screen shot 7-10 these images have my profile settings. I don't trust airplane mode to really shut off all that I want off so I make sure that things I want disabled are disabled and when I go into Performance I disable airplane mode and enable WiFi (Not sure what Background Sync is or if it even works on the Nook most times I keep it off especially for the "Screen Off" and "Powersave" profiles)
For the governors I leave it as interactive for "Full Speed" and "Normal" settings and conservative for "Save Battery" and Extreme Save Battery these may be the default I am not sure.
If I wanted to really go crazy. I could set my Normal CPU speed to 1008mhz to save battery life while on battery. I could also setup it up that if I have 100% battery use Performance Profile and when the battery level drops to 70% use Normal profile (with CPU at 1008mhz) and when the battery goes to 60% then create a new profile which lowers the CPU speed even more. But with my current setup I am very happy and the fact that after a few days of no use the Nook still has the same power level from when I last had it on.

You can setup a profile where if you press the power button the CPU speed is reduced and turn off all features except WiFi. I believe that after 5 minutes (or what ever time you have set for "Sleep" I believe the default is 2 minutes) the Nook will go to sleep and all features for Sleep will take over e.g. No WiFi.
This will give you two Power options:
1. let the Nook go to sleep on its own after 5 minutes (Screen would be on during this time killing battery life)
2. Press the power button and screen turns off but WiFi is still on and after 5 minutes sleep all features off.
You can monitor what it's doing by pressing the power button and waiting about 6 minutes. Then go to the CPU Tuner log (shift pages to the left until you see the log page) What you would want to see is the following:
11:08am ALL-> Performance
11:07am All-> Powersave
11:01am All -> Screen Off
11:00am ALL-> Performance
Please note that since the time is only shown as hours and minutes it possible to see settings with the same time stamp.

but times, and apps move on.
currently I use the free "Battery Doctor" from Google Play which does what Tuner can do, but in a much user friendlier way.
my tablet only loses 1 to 2% overnight and still has 80% or so left if not used for a few days.
the developer also has a great file cleaner utility which i also use, and the Task Killer, and memory cleaner widgets you get.
in my opinion they are MUST have's, and I no longer even use the paid version of Juice defender that was my favorite app.

I'm running CM11 Snapshot M3 and haven't been able to find a user friendly way to automatically get wifi off during sleep.
The built-in "turn off wifi during sleep" setting does not seem to be working.
Battery Doctor (Battery Saver) doesn't seem to work well on this ROM. After installing, it would seem to let me change the screen brightness (the slider would move), but then it would revert back to 20%. The app then crashed, and attempting to run it again after rebooting results in a black screen of death.
I've tried a couple other apps like WiFi Auto-Off and Advanced Battery Saver - Free, and neither succeeded in shutting off wifi during sleep.
Granted, I did not try CPU tuner with this ROM. I've tried it in the past and found it very unfriendly.
Anyone have a user friendly method to automatically get wifi off during sleep on CM11?

I decided to give CPU Tuner another shot and it seems to work some of the time. I haven't been able to figure out what the difference is between the times it works and the times it doesn't.

I just use the available quick toggles in CM11 to manually (1) switch off WiFi and (2) go to sleep.
Yes, there is a quick toggle for go to sleep.
I've pretty much have gave up on ever having great battery life on my Nook. Just the nature of the beast Still a great little tablet
Since all those apps automate disable wi-fi when system sleeps and you won't get any notifications if android apps. try to poll data from internet, I just set wi-fi to automatically turn off in android wi-fi advanced menus, there is no need of any of those apps since android system can do the same thing.

Whenever my nook gets below 50% battery it goes nuts. apps open themselves, then shut down, windows open, if I am watching a video it stops then begins at the beginning. Weird.
Have had this issue before and was hoping with the upgrade it would stop, but no dice.
Help?

I have the same issue with my Nook Tablet. I will get to about 43% and it flips out. Apps opening, settings opening, Apps close, airplane mode comes, etc. I have to plug it back in to undo the mess and continue using it. I've had this issue with AndoidForNook's builds as well as the CM-acclaim 10.2.1 build.

Thanks, glad to know it's not just me and I don't have a real "ghost in the machine". I use my Nook on the train everyday, couple times a week I have to pull out an external battery to keep it going.

Hi all.
I have been testing the various versions of AOKP 4.2.2 on my Springboard and I noticed something that I'd share.
I have been installing different versions and saw that the battery usage was terrible and sometimes the tablet became sluggish. I found out why.
The Performance Control was initially showing the CPU going from lowest to highest speeds properly. However, later, it was always showing the CPU at the highest speeds and was not slowing down.
It seems like whenever you go into Device Options menu, something is activated that causes the CPU to behave this way.
In order to avoid this, do not go to Device Options. When I did do this, I would always have to kill it to go back to the main settings. I'm not sure if just going into the Device Options causes this or selecting some options on that menu. However, setting the options back to defaults did not fix the issue. I had to reflash the ROM to stop this behaviour.
When I went into Device Options, I checked the option to allow the tablet to go into deep sleep. I don't think this is necessary as when checking how long the CPU has been at various speeds/states, it now shows that it goes into Deep Sleep for the larger amount of time without having to make any changes to the Device Options.
Now, with AOKP 4.2.2, I can go a whole day and only lose about 8-10%. I believe that is with WiFi on but not heavy usage.

So I find if I go to settings > device maintenance > battery
I keep switching the Power Saving Mode to OFF
Just seems way faster I expect due to the CPU not being limited. Its wonderful without the CPU limiter!
But it keeps setting itself to Mid after a few hours have elapsed. I can't find any settings to control this.
Any ideas? I essentially don't want any of Samsung's power saving at all. I'm happy with Greenify and LSpeed.
Update, found a setting that restarted my tablet every few nights. Turned that off and the power saving mode is sticking
