[Q] Screen brightness changing - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hi did anyone notice that while watching movies screen brightness tends to go up and down by itself? Its like automatic brightness, but it does it even when its turned off. Even on lowest brightness setting i can see it going little bit brighter, then little bit darker, its quite annoying when watching videos...

Are you streaming or watching locally? Streaming content usually displays odd behavior. I use MX Player Pro and love it.

streaming - netflix.
but its doing this stuff even in games... its not that notiecable when brightness is high, but on lowest settings its so annoying...

I've had that issue on my first Prime. Eventually I replaced it. Haven't had any issues since then.

It's called DIDIM. Basicially it's supposed to automatically adjust brightness and contrast to save battery, you can read about it if you Google "Nvidia DIDIM". I agree that it's really annoying when watching things on low brightnesses in the dark, but hopefully software changes will be able to even it out to make it less annoying. It's a new technology, just have to give it time I hope.

this issue is already known als a * tegra 3 energy saving feature* and is in Android 4.0.3 still enabled and not a changeable value

ok im glad to hear that i wasnt sure if its some kind of "feature" or hw problem. Thanks a lot for explanation, and i hope they sort it out somehow in near future

Any update on this? I'm still having this issue

I had this problem 30 mins ago. I was watching podcast on my flight with brightness all the way down because it was dark on the plane and it would do it every time a white screen came on.
It is annoying but not worth complaining about. It would not be so bad if it didn't take so long to rise and lower the brightness.

[Q] Screen Flickering - Black lines?

so I returned my sgs2 today and got a new one (old one had scratches). Now it seems to me that there is some flickering with black lines (very faded) on certain brightess settings on mainly white sites using a browser.
I noticed the flickering appears around 16% - 19% brightness settings (using "brightness level" from the market).
This flickering only appears only if "auto adjust screen power" is NOT selected, same brightness with it activated shows no flickering.
Also last but not least if plugged in with USB cable the flickering stops as well.
Can anyone re-produce this flickering?
1. Download "brightness level" from market, go between 16% - 19% (try step by step), with me its strongest at 17%.
2. Ensure "auto adjust screen power" is deactivated under Settings>Display
3. Open Internet and just look at a mostly white page
4. Ensure USB is not connected.
Can you see some slight flickering? Lots of lines across the screen?
Wonder if its just me, might go back and return this one tomorrow then
I assume no one suffers from this issue?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
No flickering.
I get black/dim horizontal lines flickering on the display at low brightness regardless of my "auto adjust screen power" setting. I'd describe it more as a shimmering of the screen. It's very distracting - I first noticed it whilst trying out the Kindle app and it made it very difficult reading the text.
I believe it's down to interference with some radio component of the phone. I've searched various forums and haven't come across many mentions of this so maybe it's a bad batch and I'm considering returning mine. It's frustratingly variable so I hope I can demonstrate the fault in store...
I'm wondering if the increase in brightness just masks the effect rather than eliminating it. At lower brightness settings, any local differences in brightness are going to be more noticeable.

have you noticed any change at certain battery levels?? Like if the battery was at 90% its easily noticeable, once its like below 70% I'm not able to re-produce it, no matter what I try down to 0%.
So maybe since it seems to be only from 90% - 70%, it could be to do with the current/voltage at certain brightness levels with white background...very unique problem it seems..I'm thinking of going to the o2 store but I most likely wont be able to re-produce it then and there so will they still exchange it? hmmm lets see..

I'll note down what the battery power levels are over the next week or so.
I went into the O2 store after work and reproducing the effect was indeed difficult. I had it showing the effect in the shopping centre whilst sitting down at a bench. I had it showing the effect whilst in the queue to wait for an O2 staff member. Fifteen minutes later, once I'd got to talking to the staff, it worked fine. All I could do was explain the problem and ask if anyone else had reported it. They advised I "kept an eye on it over the next couple of weeks".
Really frustrating. I'd entertain the possibility that my eyes are faulty but I've shown the effect to someone else and they agreed it was distracting.

Hi,
I was not able to reproduce it using your directions, but I have to say that I also noticed horizontal lines flickering on white.
I tried to reproduce it but I can't find out what it is related to.
So it's doig it just in random fashion

does it flicker with auto brightness on? You might want to download an app like "brightness level" and set it to different settings to see when/where it flickers...mine usually flickered at 17% screenbrightness when battery was at 70 - 90%

Yes I did download it and followed yur directions to try to repruce it. But I could not. I set then brightness to various level from 100% down to 0, but no luck. I have to try now when battery is at that level. Then it could be some kind of intereference. Lines I noticed on mine are very subtle and close about 1 mm
Ok, confirmed: 92% battery, brightness 17% on white or close to white screen color, there are horizontal lines like some itnerefernce/noise. Annoying
Samsung galaxy S2 screen flickering
I also have the same screen flickering problem.
it happens when the battery level is around 87-91%
Any soulution?
same here
black lines around text on white background. It disappears after a while, but is really annoying. I suppose the only solution is to change the phone?
sorry guys to hear u got the same problem....I never found a resolution to it apart from returning it to the store....once I managed to reproduce the issue infront of the manager he swapped the phone straight away.
If you got the same issue make sure you get to the store with the battery level and brightness level that shows it up, ask to go into a dark area to show it properly.
First o2 store I went to the guy refused to look at it properly and as it was light outside he couldnt see it anyways. Second o2 store I went to, the manager went downstairs with me and turned off the lights to see the flickering because it shows only on low brightness so make sure you take that into consideration when in a bright/well-lit store.
i have the same problem, it, but it only appears when "auto adjust screen power" is on. Its really a shame! Only way to fix it is to change the phone?
same here. flickers at low brightness with battery under 90%. called samsung hotline. the problem was new to them and the only idea they had was resetting the phone. tried it but unsurprisingly its no help. galaxy s2 could be great but it has just too many annoying hardware flaws
Same problem
Well I noticed this on my SGS 1 !! ... when I have PACKET DATA turned on this flickering starts. It starts really hard when i have this function turned on, but when i disable it there's nothing...
Noticed same problem on SG2 bought in Sweden
Realise this is an older topic but i have recently noticed this issue in low light with Auto On. Battery level at 85 percent. For those that had their phones replaced did the issue continue? Has anyone seen this with the yellow tint also?
Noticing this issue as well on Villain ROM 2.4. Auto brightness enabled and 90% battery.
*Edit* Just did a CWM restore to stock rooted and the flickering seems to have gone. 85% battery, auto brightness enabled.
phone swapped... problem kept
i got my phone replaced 2 months ago and was very happy with the new one since it had no screen flicker... until now. so my current sgs 2 now also suffers from screen flicker and my only options are to send it to samsung and hope to get a replacement or to live with it. and since im beginning to think that this might be a general problem i tend to keep it. although i have to admit that i dont like my sgs2 as much as i did before...

Screen auto brightness problem

Ok i wanted to start new thread with this issue
got a question about the screen. Some times I can sense and see that despite of auto brightness off that the screen adjusts its brightness by itself. It is a little change but my sharp eyes can see this... Do you have a similar thing?
I can easly notice this when playing my country game. When I click on the building menu the screen gets brighter. When i cancel the menu the screen makes darker
Also in sprinkle when I use water the screen gets little brighter
I think this is because the Tegra 3 (or ASUS's implementation of it) adjusts contrast to conserve power. The changes in contrast make brightness seem to change.
I think their settings are too aggressive and they should either scale them back or add an option to turn it off, if possible. I'm sure it's nice for battery life but it does (in some very specific instances) seem to impact the experience.
Note: this is not a doom-and-gloom post. The Prime's screen performance is the best I've ever experienced on a mobile device, maybe any device, overall. So this is a bit of a nuisance but nowhere near enough for me to have an inkling of regret about buying the Prime.
This only happens on mine while in power saving mode.

I'm not sure, I'll have to do some more testing. I seem to remember it happening across the board.
I'll note that Battery mode really does make a HUGE difference in the screen's performance. Colors become very washed out, so much so that I'm really surprised by the impact.
Well in my case this thing occurs on every mode with the same strenght... That sucks
so anyone of you can confirm if this is normal? Do you have the same isue on your primes?
It seems the light sensor has high resolution and Asus needs to smooth up a bit the auto-brightness algorithms If your screen goes up and down then simply disable auto-brightness or change lightning conditions

Like i said auto brightness is off. Can anyone install my country and check his out for me? Just enter build menu and chec if the screen gets a little brighter
it has nothing to do with auto-brightness... Its a feature of tegra 3, it can change the brightness of each pixel to give you the best image and use the least amount of power.. unfortunately its just annoying and not implemented well.
And you cannot turn it off.
Ya I noticed this too last night and thought that I had a defective screen. Made a thread about it earlier. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421002

Does auto-brightness totally suck? is it just me?

In a completely dark room, auto-brightness will sometimes randomly bump up the brightness level of the screen to, say, 25% (way too bright). In a dimly lit room, it generally stays pinned to minimum unless i move it up manually before turning auto-brightness on (way too dark).
Changes take a long time and are inconsistent. Anyone else experience this?
Never been a fan of auto-brightness. It depends on the light sensor in the device, but I turn this off on most android devices as it just ends up soaking up power anyway.

I have noticed that as well. Specifically the in a almost completely dark room its not set at minimum brightness, and when in a dimly lit room it will be at minimum brightness.
Oddly enough when in the completely dark room if I turn off auto brightness then put it back on it will usually go down to minimum brightness. This lasts for awhile then it seems to bump back up.
mine does this also..
I do recall nearly every reviewer of the Prime saying that the auto-brightness was pretty wonky.
But with that being said, auto brightness seems rather unnecessary on pretty much any Android device. Even Froyo had native brightness widgets.

Ditto here, you will find auto turned off on all my devices. Never seems to work for me correctly.
Same here on my 64gb model on .33 version. Also posted here ...

Can heavily be noticed in mobilephonetalk forums while scrolling the page with auto bright turned off. Even on max or min brightness....
It sucks. Plain & Simple
I do wonder why they have such a hard time making Auto Brightness / Sensors that work correctly. Or at least consistantly. I used to play with it, setting the brightness level, then going to auto on several HTC devices, and while it was a LOT better than the Primes setup, it wasn't consistent which always caused me to give up on it. Seems a waste to even put the sensor in there when no one seems to be able to control it properly.
Maybe it IS an Android thing, for I remember no such issue with Windows Mobile devices. Hmm. Hold out any hope of ICS? Perhaps it will address it, but for now, I am still skeptical that ICS is the Holy Grail everyone claims it to be. It would have to address a LOT to be anywhere near that perfect. Who knows. Maybe it IS that good, in which case, My Prime is really gonna shine!
I don't like it on my HTC Sensation either. Too much dimmed when outside and in bright rooms.
Does anyone have a device with ICS that can confirm if auto brightness still acts the same? Every Android device I have had has the same issue. I have just learned to deal with it although I do not like it.

Yep HTC sensation is the same..
I find it very good on my Sensation, suits me well. But in the Prime its well too low.
Sent throught the wormhole from my CoinInserted Sensation OG.
it's ok. not perfect
I also never use auto backlight, but on the TFP it seems ok.
It's not perfect but it almost always reacts pretty fast to changes in light.
When I'm in a dark room it always goes to the lowest setting.
Sometimes it seems to 'forget' to work and then I need to turn the auto setting off and then back on again and that seems to remind it to go back to work.

Hello,

Ok in all seriousness I have not had this issue....did you try rebooting your prime? I have noticed some hicups from time to time, like touch tones stop working....but if I reboot it will work again. I am sure its just the newness of ICS, these things will get ironed out in time.
I leave it off anyways. Its a known automatic brightness is a battery drainer. You'll get better battery life with it off.

I think this is more of a feature than a bug, although I keep mine at one certain level anyway.
It's to give you a more seamless experience, as soon as the screen goes off and back on it adjusts. It's so when you're reading an article and move from one area to another, you don't get a surprise mid-sentence. I always hated reading things off my phone with auto brightness on, couldn't just focus on the words had to keep tripping up on a constantly changing screen.
With sun i meant that you can hold it against a bright light
Sry for my bad english...
I've actually noticed some differences in the sensitivity of the light sensor on various units. Some do seem to get "stuck," where others maintain an accurate measurement of ambient light. This seems to be correlated to newer units (e.g., C1 units).
The one I'm using right now does switch lighting both more quickly and, it would seem, more accurately. The ones I had previously would get stuck either on high or low brightness (with very little adjustment in between), and I needed to toggle the auto brightness button to get them to adjust to new conditions.
I found auto brightness on the device to be an annoying burden if anything. I just keep it pretty low all the time. Better that way anyways.
Same problem here - The brightness goes up under bright light, and won't readjust until the next screen off/on or reboot.
Does anyone have a Prime that adjusts back down without turning the screen off?
I swear it's intentional and not a bug, although they should offer you the option of controlling its parameters. Just have to wait for the unlocker and some custom ROMage.
But seriously, I think it's to keep a continuity in your current session, so that if you're gaming or working (the two things this tablet's for) you're not plagued by an ever-changing screen that distracts you...

I can see how the concept of continuity can be good. But in my case for example, switching the bedroom light on - followed by a certain increase of brightness on ATP - then switch the bedroom light off to go to bed - the persistent brightness (tested for >15mins) can be a little straining on the eyes. Although readjusting the brightness is as simple as 'clicking' the 'auto' icon on/off again so that the brightness comes down to appropriate level (it only takes 2seconds to do it) - I think this is defeating the purpose of having the auto-brightness setting in the first place.

Oh I whole-heartedly agree. Going from my living room anywhere else in the house causes blindness with auto brightness on. And it acts completely opposite on this device than all others I've touched that use the feature. And like you say, if it's "automatic brightness" then why would it not be totally automated?
I'm just saying there's definite reasoning and programming behind it, it's not just some bug per se.
Therefore, don't expect ASUS to do anything about it, it'll all be up to our wonderful dev's here; they'll say it's properly functioning even though it's bass ackwards from everything else in existence.

Anyone noticing screen flicker?

Not only do I have light bleed but I'm also seeing screen flicker. I really want to keep this device but I'm getting sick of this...
The first thing I noticed when I turned on the device was the light bleed. Its pretty bad, and I normally don't mind those types of things. No flicker here though.
Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk
I noticed if I turn up the brightness it goes away.
I don't have light bleed, but I do see flicker if the screen brightness is turned down. It's reminiscent of the original Nexus 7, which had the exact same problem.
I have the flickering too...really annoying. I was hoping that this would replace my iPad but it's not looking good. Although lollipop is pretty amazing so far.
Does it only happen you adjust the brightness? If so, i dont think its a big deal as long as it doesnt happen during actual usage.
I noticed the flicker issue when I first was using it. I then turned off auto brightness from the main settings and started using Lux Auto Brightness and the issue has been resolved as far as I can see. I suspect this is an issue with the Lollipop build's brightness manager and not a hardware issue from the backlight. Also as far as bleed goes, there is apparent bleed when viewing the screen at an angle and looking directly at the edge, however I have found that it is a complete non issue in normal use (even in a fully dark room), which stands in stark contrast to my Nexus 10 which has noticeable edge bleed when viewed straight on.
No Flicking here
No flickering here either.
No flickering, but the auto brightness is very weird! It goes from extremely bright to extremely dark without me actually moving, same light conditions?
No flicker here!
Well, I guess we can all admit screen flicker is of the norm of Tegra.
Im seeing flikkering too.....
Only when brightness is low.
Remind me why Google/htc did not decide to use a 64 bit Qualcomm processor instead? :-\
Do you think that this issue can be solved via software update, or is this issue hardware related, and therefore cannot be fixed easily

considering that not everyone has it
So i say no
This issue seems to be related to auto brightness/adaptive brightness: The same brightness level set manually doesn't flicker.
Seems to be a software issue to me, and it seems highly likely every Nexus 9 flickers with auto brightness on (and at low relative brightness setting) in low light environments.

I guess we aren't experiencing the same issue, then: My screen only flickers with adaptive brightness enabled in low light conditions, seems like it is constantly readjusting the screen between two brightness values.
My Nexus 9 doesn't flicker at any constant brightness setting.
Yep, my Nexus 9 flickers as well.
About 15-20% brightness (fixed). It doesn't flicker all the time and it goes away if you change the brightness level or even by itself if you change the app you are using.
This leads me to believe this might be a software issue (N7/2013 had this too when it came out).
