WTF??? A quick Google of SPH-D700 shows that to be the Samsung Epic 4G, which is a Sprint phone. The I9100 is a GSM phone. Sprint is a CDMA network. I hope you're planning on changing carriers if you hope to use the I9100.
Unless you're just confused, and actually ordered a Sprint variant of the Galaxy SII, which is the SPH-D710, or as they call it, the Epic 4G Touch.
Just so I'm clear, the I9100 will NOT work on Sprint's network.
Yea I'm aware that I am on sprint right now. I am aware that the i9100 is GSM, and yes I will be using att.

Hey, I had to check. Some folks just make uninformed decisions and are baffled when the equipment they order doesn't work on their network.
LP6 with my GPS fix works pretty damn well. FM Radio is the only real issue I have encountered. If you want a more ICS experience, push trebuchet or NOVA launcher to /system/app and it will be much better.

It's so popular it's one of those phones - like Desire HD - that's known inside and out Been out in europe for ages, but the US had better carrier specific devices, faster CPUs, etc. At it's core the same device mind.
I was in no rush for ICS but tried WanamLite and all was fine, although the launcher freezes now and then which I put down to a full phone, and an early rom.
This used the CM9 trebuchet launcher. I've got to say almost everything about ICS is cleaner, faster, smoother than previous roms - custom or not. Easy task control, nice display, and little things I still keep discovering like when you connect via USB you get a choice of media device or camera (with the usual USB development option off).
I've had this thing months and must have flashed 50+ roms lol. In the end I stuck with Leomars then the combined Leomar/Checkrom HD because of the kitchen app for easy addons and upgrades.
If youve never used a samsung dont worry, its usually a simple app that will root it and install a recovery console <- very important, cause after that you can flash anything, and as long as you get back to recovery youll be fine. Backup often - complete rom via the recovery (power on, vol down) and a data/app backup with Titanium.
I don't think you need worry about ADB or odin anymore, but if you do just follow instructions on this site...
Your reward? the best phone around esp if the rom you use adds neat things like Jkays extensions, modded apps, kitchens, good theme engine, etc. For pure Android go for AOSP roms, otherwise they're a mish mash of parts.
Change the boot anim if you want, you might get a yellow warning triangle because the sammy knows the roms "illegitimate" but its easily removed.
Finally, should you need to, the stock roms and kernels and modems are here too if you need to get everything back to default, best get them quick as the download sites are dissapearing, or rip yours first before you burn another...
Have fun! You couldn't pick a better handset right now

Just FYI. Bold/Italic/Underlined part is not exactly true. Some of the US carrier specific models have completely different hardware, and have faster clock speeds because they use inferior CPUs.
i got my i9100 today. but i am having some problems trying to get it rooted. using this method here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414 when i go to get the insecure kernel my kernel is not listed, and my original kernel is not listed either. So i am not sure if i do this rooting method using any kernel from the list if it will brick my phone or not.
waiting a reply from someone in the threads before i proceed.

From what I can tell, you need the insecure KJ2 kernel. That kernel is no longer directly linked on Odia's insecure kernel page, but there's a link to his Hotfile upload site where all older kernels are stored.

Hi all,
I managed to port CWM to Galaxy player 4.0 (EU version - not for usa or KR). But I want your feedback to check if all works as it should.
Whats included:
-Voodoo Sound v10 (you need to install Voodoo Control or Voodoo Control Plus)
-CWM recovery 3.0.0.5 (with working su adb shell, usb mount storage, flash updates zip,...)
-Works on XXKPN or XXKPQ roms (or alternatively my custom rom)
-ROM Manager app is not supported: only reboot to recovery function works: don't try to update recovery from rom manager or to flash a rom from rom manager app
Here's the download link:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9TXANJ6S
Please post your experiences (positive and negative) to help development. Thanks!
omg thank you....i have been waiting for CWM for a really long time.....i will give it a try...report to you later
Steve how is clockwork working on the 4 but not the 5. i dont see how its possible that they are even 1 tiny bit different aside from screen size.
have you tested CWM on the 5.0 and know that it does not work?
i would love to know your method for making it work on the 4.

i have read that here, but not sure exactly how.
odd how Sammy made them so software different.
but i guess 2 galaxy 1 devices are not the same, but then again those are carrier specific also.

I have tried the kernel (not the new version) CWM work nicely (I was able to do a backup of my rom )
Clockwork worked fine but I did not know which device to select so I chose the I9000 and now the widgets and apps are messed up. Widgets do not show up, the apps "cannot be found" and the apps were shown with a box with the android in it. Luckily I was able to flash back to my stock ROM with no problems, but end up in losing my data -_-.

I haven't tested on the 5 because I down't have it and sorry but I don't develop kernels for devices I don't own... it will result in bricking your device instead of mine...
I don't think it will difficult anyways... For the 4.0 I used a version of CWM for stiock SGS i9000 as the devices partition and structure is exactly the same.

Obviously ROM manager is not supported apart from the reboot to recovery function. You flashed a i9000 rom on a different device, you are lucky you not bricked your device
Voodoo Control
Ok guys, i succeed to flashing my yp-g1 to this Kernel after flashing the ROM from STeVe from another thread in this forum. I think this rom and kernel work nice enough and my quadrant score is 1420 - 1524, even 1600++, if i run quadrant twice sequentially. Not bad improvement because my quadrant score before about 1408 (2.3.5 Gingerbread).
everything works : Wifi, Camera, FM Radio, Bluetooth, GPS, Voodoo Control (i install this my self), Animation, etc
Notification Area is not clean enough since STeVe write "STeVe's Galaxy Player" on this area.. after i see that, i feel that my yp-g1 is not mine, because there is your name (seriously, literally).
Overall : Nice Job STeVe .... Since it's the first and the only one Custom Rom for Galaxy S WIFI 4.0 until now.
Thank you.

Hello steve, I just wanted to let you know that I tried to flash the kernel on the us version and the only thing not working is the home button obviously. I'm LOVING voodoo sound, the sound is crystal clear now and the hiss basically disappeared!! so first of all thank you, second I was wondering if you could help me understand what to do to use your code while using the driver for the us version buttons...if that's what it is... I'm sorry I have zero knowledge about kernels but I know my way around basic linux(i manage web servers) ..it just seems pretty easy to me unexpert eyes to make it work if its just the buttons. Or if you want to do it I'll be glad to test it for you since I can reflash the stock rom so no bricking risks!

SteveS, could you send the PM to me as well? I am also very interested in porting voodoo to the US galaxy player 4.0.
Thank you.
My girlfriend asked me to turn off LTE to save battery and I remembered reading that you need a custom kernel to do that.
So, start from her stock ICS, how should I proceed?
The "Road and Ref Map" post seems to say that I should first flash CWM thru Odin then flash SU, is this the correct way to root now?
Then... which kernel shall I flash to be able to turn off LTE? Or do I actually need a custon ROM? I'm fine with flashing stuff since I've been playing with a Droid X for a year, but I'm not sure she'll agree to flash any ROM other than the stock...
Thank you very much!

You are on the right track. ..
Read read read! !!
The process is solid, but "your " knowledge is the key to a flawless root.
Take notes of the process and get your pc environment ready and then your good to go! !
Once rooted a custom rom is needed to control network...however it may be possible to toggle off the LTE function without root using a network code. ..unless you want root also. ...(i would )
Rooted custom roms are awesome. ...and i prefer the UCLF6 build from FlappJaxxx.
For code options, you'll need another user to help as i don't have them. ...and im not sure it will even work.
There are many great members here that are willing to help. ..
And i hope I've helped you today. ..g

The stock at&t modem is locked so users cannot mess with it. If you key *#2263# you will see.
The stock Rogers modem is not restricted. Using the dialer code it is theoretically possible to toggle 4g/3//2g. To me that means it could be possible to use one of the widgets in the market to toggle. But for some reason the phone slows to a crawl after flashing this modem.
Most of the roms in the development section don't have the toggle for 4g/3g/2g. I say most because there might be one that does but I've never seen anyone mention this feature.
I would like more input here because this could give better battery performance.
Thank you all for the info! Maybe I'll just root and install some sort of stock rooted ROMs instead.
The battery life got dramatically worse after the ICS OTA: it could last a day without problem before, but now it died in the middle of her working day. I tried Better Battery Stat and found that AlarmManager kept the phone awake almost all the time, which to my knowledge didn't point to any specific problem.
Could battery life be better just by installing a debloated stock rooted ROM?
Try flashing the Canadian ROM with the Canadian radio together. It is unbranded and will look almost exactly like the ATT ROM. I have been using the complete package together (my version, not sam's version) and have experienced no slowdown experiences. I am on ATT however my phone is a Rogers Note and not an ATT note. Some users have reported a slowdown issue with the ATT I717 and a Canadian modem.

I am going to try Agoattamer's suggestion. I will post the steps and links if it does what we want.
I just updated my vibrant from stock froyo to stock gb via kies factory upgrade.
Here are specifics as is: firmware 2.3.6 baseband t959VUVKJ6 kernel 2.6.35.7-t959VUVKJ6-CL694130 build GINGERBREAD.VUVKJ6
I went through hell today to root and unlock the sim of this phone as its my first day ever messing with android phones.
I was looking at the wiki for the t-959 roms, the "stable" one is barebones and the "cutting edge" one is CyanogenMod 7.2. Barebones pretty much hints you lose functionality and though the other is apparently great, it isn't "stable" and here and there you read a post here and there of someone having some kind of trouble with a feature that just might have worked with the factory rom.
I don't want to sacrifice factory functionality for a phone that looks good or is too modern for the vibrant to handle, I want a rom where I will have no issues whatsoever with things like mms, camera, ics, gps, wifi / 3g sip w & w/o bluetooth (w sipdroid), tethering, installing to sd, that has a promise of performing well for a good while and ideally for the rest of the life of the phone without having to possibly upgrade again.
It seems my best bet is to either just leave my phone as is or go with barebones and install apps as NEEDED, please help, you learn alot in the forum but also you run across soo many contradictions, alternatives and options that its too confusing and time consuming, really, I just want to do this once, quick and get it over with, bam bam bam, done and hopefully never have to mess with it again until it gets smashed or I loose it.
oh another thing, though this phone is rooted unless I insert an SD I can't browse ANY files, either via its ui or via usb... I have a captivate where I can see both sd internal and external via both ui and usb, I'm assuming its a rom issue that once I upgrade to any rom that will be solved.
Well cm7.2 is based on gingerbread which you said you have. It is pretty stable except for possible GPS and 911 issues. Cm9 is based on ICS, its also pretty stable but same possible issues. CM10 is based on jellybean, its in alpha build but considering its fairly stable except for same two issues. As far as looking at files, you need root browser or root explore. Just DL from market. I'm running Der Teufel's Hellybean cm10 ROM. Its really nice. But you said you want to set and forget....ICZen is a good ICS ROM. Its pretty stable and a lot more up to date than gingerbread.

Seeing that this is your first experience with Android, I would say that you need to make sure that you know what you are doing first before you start flashing anything. I am going to save you some serious heartache in just one minute.
First, Kies is notorious for HardBricking phones. Don't use it. You can use Odin or Heimdall to flash back to "stock" whenever you need to. Always good to do when flashing ROMs to have a clean base to start with. Google them and you will find what you need.
And now, here is where I am going to save you tons of trouble and the painstaking issues that WILL lie in your future. When I say that you need to know what you are doing before you start flashing, here is why. YOU DO NOT HAVE A VIBRANT, so don't flash any Vibrant ROMs to your phone. First we never got an official GB ROM, only Froyo. Second the builds that you put up there are to the SHG-T959V. That is the 4g version. Those ROMs won't work in the Vibrant and our ROMs won't work on theirs. Fortunately there is a forum for those and you will find whatever you need in there.
Good luck and be careful and above all read, read, read.
Hey wood, this is the second person I have seen stating they had stock GB on a vibrant. I thought it was weird. I figure if you are not sure what phone you have or what OS your running you shouldn't try to install custom ROM! Thanks for saving that guy!
drool on my chin from a mouth full of jellybeans
You survived kies. That is awesome. But hellybean is awesome.

Personally, I would skip any ICS roms entirely. The risk of getting the EU bug (dead internal memory) isn't worth it. Go straight to JB.
This was so much easier on my other phones and my Skyrocket... but Girlfriend is jealous and wants here ATT Galaxy S2 i777 up to a newer rom. Her phone is running the latest UCLE5 ICS from OTA. I just used ODIN to gain root using the stock kernel and all is still well except no clockwork. I'd like to get clockwork from the most factory kernel I can so I can snap a nandroid of the phone exactly as it is today, settings, apps backgrounds etc. This gives me a restore point to bring her back to if she decides running cutting a cutting edge rom is too annoying for her, and hence by proxy for me.
So on my Skyrocket, I just used ODIN to get CWM, nandroid and done, no root or anything.... whats the equivilent for the S2 i777 given the same requirement?
Thanks.
Once I've got a good nandroid, I'll wipe and move on with the hostile operations.
BTW, I did look at all he kernels but most all seem to have some nuance to them - I just want a CWM update to start that is ultimately as non intrusive as possible.

You have to flash a zimage from a kernel using Mobile odin. Google how to flash custom binaries without ever incrementing the flash counter i 777 and the first one should be correct
Bleh
I read that thread and understand the concepts, but its covered in bold red warnings "You must use a Gingerbread kernel!". At all the important steps. It seems much of the documentation is very Gingerbread centric.

If all he wants is a custom ROM. Just flash any kernel with CWM, and flash the ROM of choice
There is no point backing up stuff, flashing a different ROM, then flashing a kernel to get CWM. God the root process is a joke as listed.

O also, once you get CWM. follow instructions of said ROM thread.

I'll even explain more. The reason its listed as "must flash GB Kernel" is because when it was written, thats what we had for a system.
System, as in the phone, will not boot up if you flash a kernel from a different android version. But will have no effect on CWM functions
I guess maybe thats the basis of my question... which kernel with CWM would be the best choice to load, since its a point of no return, in order to capture an initial nandroid of the phone exatcly as it is today with only root, before I pursue more hostile rom updating.
I just want to have a nandroid restore point to come back to so the phone is just like it is this very minute(or as close to as possible), not a clean wipe of ICS, but exactly as it is today.
The optimal choice would be the factory ICS kernel with CWM but that doesnt seem to exist.
Once I get that, then all holds are lifted and I can load one rom after the next until we have a winner. I'm no stranger to CWM. If she decides she liked it better as it was before I started, nandroid restore, and I can continue playing with my skyrocket on CM10-JB-SKY
There is no factory kernel with CWM.
Could grab an ICS kernel that has CWM, and flash that, boot into recovery and take a backup. but that dont help on stock kernel, becuase to get that you need Odin. and that should wipe data away flashing it.

Oh, and ROM manager is a no go here. (Not CWM you not into, the app, ROM manager)

As long as the kernel you are flashing has cwm baked in it really doesnt matter because ROMs you will flash from then on will have a kernel packaged with it. So just pick a kernel with cwm and flash. Make nandroid. Flash rom. Profit

well thats just stupid. Wipe should always be performed when flashing to a different version.

should, but unless using a One Click Odin package, it wont wipe data. just flashing /system, or kernel, wont wipe /data
So, I'm still searching for a tried and true kernel with cwm which doesn't introduce a degradation in stock ICS functionality. Replies still don't seem to understand that a nandroid returning to some degraded kernel is not acceptable nor is wiping back to a stock ROM as that also defeats the whole purpose of creating this fall back plan, with preserving current state. The above is the number one primary requirement. Until that is satisfied, no factory resets or data wipes to new ROMs.
I'm really surprised so few people have any opinion on one kernel over another in relation to the released version of ICS. The skyrocket forum is loaded with kernel variations with pros/cons of each in relation to intended usage. I would think more people here would have experience given the phones popularity.

ATT Galaxy S2 i777 running the latest UCLE5 ICS from OTA, Gained root using [Heimdall][Odin][Stock][Root]UCLE5 Stock ICS with Root.
Which kernel / ver would you recommend to get CWM with the expectation that [Heimdall][Odin][Stock][Root]UCLE5 + "your recommended kernel" would be the permanent daily driver.
Any other ROM updates using CWM could very well be temporary and the above configuration would need to be ready and available using nandroid without loosing any current data.

Opinions are frowned on around here. While some forums get away with it, we dont like em.
fact is, that any ICS kernel that works with Touchjizz should work.
We dont tell folks what to flash, you gotta find that on your own.
There are stickies and such that can help you choose.

I understand why opinions might be frowned upon, but as stated in the other kernel thread, factual comparisons are frowned upon too. I'd prefer a factual comparison but in lieu of that the next best thing is an opinion/observation from someone who has already taken the risk. That's kind of the best thing about a community, sharing results. Its too bad this specific forum has lost that while so many others on XDA have not.
So I get any of them should work, but as a developer I also understand that none of them will work entirely the same. So, as far as I can tell, Siyah seems to be the the most popular initial gamble given my criteria... but that's merely an observation given the hundreds of pages of reading what was 99% muddy mindless unspecified chatter.
Thanks for the insight, I do appreciate it, makes me happy this is not my phone
Any of the options here are great. They all offer something different and only the person flashing the ROM/kernel can decide what's best for their needs.
The information needed is in the OP of the ROM/kernel as to what you can expect to experience while using it.
It works for us, and that's what masters. Don't like it? Awesome, you've got a different phone anyhow so it doesn't matter whatsoever.

With the update to 4.1.2, it seems that the Australian version has the bottom icons locked. You can't change them. I've researched this and its only in Australia.... I was pretty pissed off with this, but I thought I could get used to it. Well, I can't.
So being the noob that I am, I thought simply rooting the device would allow me to solve this issue, but it doesn't seem to be that simple.
What I want to do with this phone is to unlock the bottom icons, and get rid of all carrier related stuff (boot animations, apps, etc.). Ideally I want to run pure android 4.1.2, as I'm not a fan of touchwiz, but I tried looking and I couldn't find anything, which is probably down to me being a noob. I wouldn't have a clue how to install it properly either.
So it's a Galaxy S2 I900T
The phone is on Telstra
It has been rooted
It's running stock 4.1.2
If there is anymore info you need to know in order to help me, just let me know and I'll add it.
Thanks in advance!
Well...... You could just run a custom launcher. Search for Nova launcher on the play store. It's the one I use, it's customisable to just about whatever you want.
If you're rooted and do actually want to run stock android instead of just changing the launcher, then look for the index of ROMs in the s2 section. I think GaboWinter is the OP. Look under the AOSP section in there for the stock android ones.
Quick tip, if you do flash a rom you'll have to flash an i9100"t" specific modem or your coverage will be dismal.
Ps. Is it really just the Australian version that can't change the dock icons. How rubbish.

if you want pure android, you'll probably be unable to find 4.1 since it's obsolete in aosp and I'd advise you to go with either 4.2 or even 4.3, as 4.2 especially is highly stable.
also, the guy above me is mistaken about modems, the stock i9100 modems work fine on the t variant, just depends on your carrier which ones you want to use.
to install a rom just flash a recovery image from odin (e.g. Dorimanx or PhilZ) and then copy the necessary zips to your sd, boot to recovery, and flash them
remember to back up your data first though

Just to clarify.... "the guy above you" owns an i9100 and maintains a friend's i9100T. If you mean the international i9100 modem is able to be flashed on an i9100T, I agree. I've done it. I know you also own "T" variant.
What happens in my case is that the data speeds are so dismal you'd be better off using an encyclopaedia than googling something (literally 2Kb/s in some areas. Flashing a "T" specific modem sees the speed jump to 250-300Kb/s or so in the same spot). I'm guessing by your post you have better success than that with i9100 modems on a "t" variant.

No probs mate Odd that you say that, I use XXMS2 /MS3 myself, so naturally tried them on my friend's T variant immediately after rooting. Both modems were dismal and got the 2Kb/s (sometimes hitting 20ishKb/s :0) I mentioned. Now I've got them on DULP4 & no issues at all

Yeah I've flashed dvls3 for them, it wasn't that good. Which is even weirder as they're on vodafone. Eh oh well, not my phone so I can't be constantly testing.
