[Q] Unable to find backups in directory? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

So I've made a couple Nandroid Backups and I am unable to find them in any of my directories. The reason I ask is because I'd like to rename a couple of them before I forget what I was running. I usually use ROM Manager (i know.. this is the only thing i use it for) to rename my backup files. It's just easy that way. RM isn't seeing my recent backups.. I dl'd CWM Manager app and it sees the backups if I go into "restore".. but there is no way to rename them. Also.. when i go into my phones files and into clockworkmod folder.. i still only see a couple old backups.. none of my new ones are anywhere to be found.
So i guess I'm wondering wtf the backups went to, and how do i find them in my directory? Thanks, appreciate any info I get
also if someone has a good alternative to ROM Manager for renaming backup files.. I would appreciate that as well, thanks guys!

I get the option of backing up to either sd or ex_sd. I don't suppose that gotcha?
As far as renaming, I use the ancient method of keeping a separate .txt file with the nandroid name appended with ROM and kernel. I have to edit the text file when I change ROMs or kernels, but all un-appended backups subsequent to the last appended ROM/kernel are still from that preceding combination.
Capiche?

I've haven't gotten the option to where my backups are kept. Regardless I'm still unable to find the backups anywhere I'm my directory.

Backups are in clockworkMod folder. in /sdcard or sdcard/external_sd/ depending on your kernal. the newer kernals have external sdcard as an option.
Strange that you cant find them. Delete the CWM folder and take another backup?
Maybe sdcard is full and backups arent getting saved?

It is strange. Both my SD cards have plenty of space. The part that bugs me is that the app CWM Manager see's the backups if I choose restore, but yet I cannot find those files ANYWHERE in my phone. Believe me I've opened my clockworkmod folder countless times hoping to see them. When I boot into recovery and choose restore.. I only see the two new ones... then to get the old backups in recovery I have to choose restore from external SD. So My backups are there on the phone. They are just hiding somewhere and I have no idea where else to look. I'm really just trying to rename them. I know where to find em in recovery if I need to.. but it's bugging me I don't know where to find em in my phone directory.

Have you tried another file manager?

I've tried using RootExploer as well as the stock file manager app. Even when I plug the phone into my PC via USB and search that way I cannot find the backups. Its driving me mad LOL
Not sure it should make too much of a difference but 1 of the two "missing" backups was taken with stock illusion kernel, the other backup I'm missing was taken with the new Siyah kernel 2.6.11.

Backups SHOULD be in:
/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup
or
/emmcs/clockworkmod/backup (which is /sdcard/external_sd/clockworkmod/backup on Samsung firmwares - when in CWM itself it's /emmc, same for CM7)

So.. after days of confusion I found the files.. thanks to everyone for replying. There was another "clockworkmod" folder in my external SD card. I didn't realize that as I kept opening up the first clockworkmod folder I saw... at the very bottom. Below my music, with a couple other zips, was the other clockworkmod folder... same as the one on my SD card- clockworkmod> backup> ..zips!
FINALLY!
thank for all the replies!

[Q] Help me unbork!

Here's the situation. I moved touchwiz launcer and odex to the root from system apps bc it kept launching even though I had an alternative home app. Didn't delete so if any probs. could restore. Phone was much better until reboot when I got an acore fc message that kept popping up,ok, restore touchwiz, not there anymore,I have no idea why.So I go to do a clockwork restore of my nandroid image, go to the file with the correct date in recovery,no data. Now I have phone that boots, boots into recovery, lock screen but a black screen on unlock, keys light up, notification shade works, dialer and phone work but that's it. So I mounted the phone to my PC. it recognizes the device, phone asks, mass storage, mount all ok. shows 12gig drive, so I try to push a rom by dragging and dropping but again in clockwork recov. it only shows all the folders present not the zips on the root. Now all this is user error on my part,I know I did something wrong, so you live and learn, but i really need some advice here. Beer for anyone who can talk me through this. I'm not proficient on adb. because I never had to use it so be gentle.
do you know how to restore through odin?
Are you booting into CW recovery? or are you trying to load rom from rom manager?
If you are booting in CW you should not see any files. You should choosing the zip file.

I am booting into the recovery menu, when I choose install packeges it takes me to the green CW recovery menu, I choose install zip from sd and it shows me the folders, but not the packages I want to flash. Am i doing something incorrectly?
That is the correct steps. Which rom are you trying to flash?
When in CW press " install zip from sd card" then "choose zip from sd card" the scroll down the rom and install.
Mr
First, thanks for the help! Let me try again. When I choose install zip from sd,then choose zip I am only seeing the folders, not any of the zips. When I choose the nandroid i made it shows the date of the image made but when i choose it it says no data. I am trying to flash fusion, but Id settle for the stock image which should be in there too which i can see from the drive when mounted on my PC. but not when in CW recovery.
ok man its time to flash from odin, its so simple. need help?
You don't put the update.zip on the sd card, you put it in the root directory of the phones onboard memory (so often mistakenly called the internal sd card).
Do that and try again...made the mistake myself so's I know all about it.

he said he dragged it to the 12gb drive plus would CW see the external sd card?
It'll see it, it just won't be able to install from it.
I'm not sure, but I think it has to do with permissions ?!?
Mr
Thats what I was afraid of. Im dl'ing it now, I think the slowest file host in history. I appreciate the hand hold offer, I may need it lol.
Ok, I have downloaded Odin through the all in one zip. I have watched some vids so I think Im comfortable using it,but I have a couple of questions I couldnt find answers to. Do you need to unzip anything from the all in one or just run Odin through the exe? The drivers are in that pack do i need to do anything further to install them?
Mr
Ok. My phone was acting like Loki, I learned to use Odin, and now I feel like Thor. It feels great to have a sure fire way to recover in all eventualities minus hardware damage. Hopefully my Titanium backup wasn't wiped. If any noobs want a walk-through for reflashing through Odin, shoot me a PM or post on this thread and I'll try to point you in the right direction. Now on to Fusion....

[Q] Problem flashing ROMs in CWM

I'm having an issue flashing a ROM via the sdcard zip file option.
I have (afaik) successfully installed CWM. Had an issue at first with it rebooting every 30 secs but reflashed the kernel and now it seems to work ok. However, when I try to flash a rom and go to the sdcard zip file option, it'll list several folders but not the ROM I want to flash. I have put the ROM on the sdcard in no folders (root folder) and am really at a loss.
I apologize in advance for any n00bish ways. I went through 2 cycles on iOS devices and decide to forgo the jailbreak cat and mouse chase and go android. I haven't regretted it yet. But I could really you some advice on this problem. Really looking forward to getting my phone rooted.
Much Love in Advance

All I know to say is if you put a .zip file on the sdcard you should be able to see it from cwm recovery. When you boot the phone normally can you see the file in file manager?
Which ROM are you trying?
And are you putting the file on the phones internal sdcard or an external sdcard?

I was trying the unnamed ROM -- I just have it on the sdcard in the phone. I see it fine when I plug it in and look at it through windows. What file manager are you referring to?
I have to go to work but later on tonight I'll probably try reflashing CWM and see if that helps.

Any file manager will do, there its one app named "My Files" that came with the phone. If you can see the file from that file manager you should be able to see it in cwm recovery.

I found it. Apparently, what appears to be the main folder in windows is actually the /externalsd folder. Found it in the stock file manager and was able to copy over the file and get it rooted. Thanks for your help!

Rom Kitchen With Checkromv4

Is anyone else experiencing difficulty with the Kitchen in this version? None of the kitchen tweaks will work, they download fine, and it goes thru the regular process of installing, however none of the programs seem to be functioning after installation. Just checking with anyone else before I try re flashing. I did do a full wipe before install.
2.3.6
xxki4
Siyah 2.3
Checkrom V4
The same thing is happening with me. It downloads the files just fine but when it tries to install them, it restarts to the wrong recovery (not clockworkmod). You can see the things fail installing because of the <!> that comes up in the recovery for a split second.
How can we get it working? The only way I've done it is to manually restart to the right recovery, and then manually install each zip.
Reinstall the kitchen app

Try installing them from recovery, you have to delete or rename the clockworkmod folder on the external sd card in order to install things directly from the kitchen.

Some of the mods might not work if the kernel is incompatible to those specific mods

salted_hash in clockworkmod folder
Found the culprit:
Q: I am not able to flash via Kitchen???
A: Delete Clockworkmod folder
Reason:
Previously to make the kitchen flash in older version of CWM5 we need to use a salte hash file that was placed in the Clockworkmod folder, Now with the updated CWM5 the actually problem with CWM5 was fixed by the respective creator!
So now what happens is that all you people have that salted hash file remaining in ur sd card that doesn't allow to flash stuff in the newer better CWM5, thats why when u delete the Folder it stats working coz the salted hash file gets deleted!
Now you may ask why delete the folder, when u can delete the file only!!
LOL answer is simle the Android os never recognizes the file there so when u open myfiles you never find the salted hash file inside the clockworkmod folder! You can use other apps and methods to delete the file but then there is the obvious questions from noobs!!
So Moral the problem is only with that one salted hash file and not ur backup.

So you can delete the entire folder, or just the "/sdcard/clockworkmd/.salted_hash" file. This worked for me.
Correct just the salted hash needs to go, there's no need to lose your backups. If you do delete the folder next time you do a nandroid it will only get recreated without the salted hash.

Just to check with you guys. is there any wipe of checkrom available?it appears that there is only the no-wipe version.

How Do I Delete a Corrupted Nandroid Backup

NOTE: I have searched and reviewed the existing threads on items with similar wording. Several on how to recover corrupted files within the backup etc.. Although the questions and issues are similar none describe the issue that I am experiencing.
Samsung Galaxy Note
Rooted on AOSP xXx FJ,(Flappjaxxx) / FJ Mod of ICS UCLF6
Currently on CWM Recovery 5.8.4.3
Situation:
No prior issues experience with nandroid backup, had 2 other backups plus the one I'm referring to (one of AOSP xXx and FJ Modded)
Performed a nandroid backup to try out CM09 from FJ AOSP. All went well... including the CM09 install and apps.
Missed the S-pen functionality and wanted to flip back to FJ Modded ROM.
Attempted to restore the most recent backup... Failed. Booted into CM09 and went to Root Explorer and looked into the backup file. I noticed that the file has a lot of what appears to be random ASCII characters for file names etc... (indicated to me that this file was corrupted).
Since I had other backups, I went to one of the older ones and restored.
Problem: this corrupted backup is taking up about 1.9 GB and I want to delete but it will not allow me. Looked at permissions and it has RW
Question: how the heck do I delete this thing without having to take my SD card out and formatting the sucker?
Thanks in advance
You should be able to plug in your phone to your computer via USB and open folder to view files on the /sdcard. Make sure USB connection is set to "USB Mass Storage" option when connected. Once you opened the folder to view files, you can navigate to the clockworkmod folder, open, and find the backups within that folder and delete that way...

Did you try to delete it in recovery (sorry if there is no such option, never looked for it...) or in root explorer? You could always get a terminal like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jackpal.androidterm and do like this:
su (if you're rooted)
cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup
rm -r 2012-07-12.13.37
Same commands should work in adb as well
Try. Android Commander.

I think that plugging the USB charger into your computer and manually deleting it should do the trick :fingers-crossed:
OK...
Thanks guys for your responses...
- did try connecting to a PC in mass storage mode and tried to delete... did not work
- use Root Explorer to do a delete as well... did not work
- looked to see if there was a delete option in recovery (first thing I looked for) did not find it
I'll try the other options and see where that goes.

If you download clockwork mod (rom manager) you can delete it in the android application in manage and restore backups.
Empty recycle bin on PC sometimes helps when deleted stuff sticks, make sure do this when plugged in ofc
If you're using Windows, run chkdsk ("Scan this drive for errors" in drive's properties) when connected as a mass storage device.
That should help.
If it won't, the guaranteed method is to copy the files you need somewhere else, format the card and put those files back.
to clairfy, you were able to locate the back up files in the folder "clockwork mod-backup" but then it would not delete when you tried?"
Thanks again for all your input.
PC crapped out this past weekend... new hdd installed and re-building with Windows 7 pro-64 (hmmm... maybe I should dual boot to Ubuntu), will need to reinstall some of the linux/android tools.
@frdd... already had terminal installed tried the commands but no luck... it reports back I'm missing files and i get a lot of errors. I guess I'm gonna have to learn Linux/Android
@icomrade... I've got the purchase ver of ROM Manager and haven't fully gone down that rabbit hole but will investigate
@NeverGone\RU... will leave that as a last resort as i've got a 32GB SD card (sucks up time)
@mankows5... yes did find all the directories and files as it should be... just can't delete that 1 backup
Yeah, try Rom manager. Manage and Restore Backups>Select the one you want to delete, then delete it.

First off, don't rename a cmw backup... trust me, if you rename the zip it will cause an md5 mismatch when you try and restore and that always tends to happen when ya need it most.
Second the file you are looking for is either on your SD or your internal storage, the file si called clockworkmod or something like that, inside you will see a file labled backup. Delete as you will, but I always tend to transfer said files onto my pc and title an individual folder for each file, there for eliminated the irritation of md5 mismatch.

That's what I'm sayin . There is no clockwork mod folder. I do have it installed though. Thanks for the info. I didn't know that would mismatch the md5

You should be able to restore the folder , by booting into recovery , and running a new backup.
This will force place a new backup file to the SD card in the proper location.
If this does not work , or the backup fails to run, you must reflash the recovery using Odin ....g
you are using cwm and not twrp right? if using twrp the backups are in folder named twrp on internal or external which ever one you specified when backing up.
/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup
/sdcard/external_sd/clockworkmod/backup
Are you rooted?
Are you on a stock-based rom and not a CM-based rom?
