[Q] Hsdpa connectivity - Nokia Lumia 800

Since updating to version .11500, my unlocked lumia has not been able to connect to anything faster than 3g.
Checked in settings>Mobile network > highest connection speed
only E and 3G are available.
Before this update there was definitely HSDPA connectivity and friends are experiencing the same.
Is this a problem, or bug?

Dial ##634# to run the diagnostics app, click on the "..." at bottom right, settings then turn HSDPA on.
If you previously dialed ##634# on an old OS/FW version and have since updated, then remove the current version.

HSPA is a form of 3G. Mine has the same E/3G option, but that doesn't mean G & H are not available (I've seen them both).
Nothing is wrong.

My setting here is "Off" and I currently have full 3G signal, however it does go to HSDPA elsewhere without me needing to touch this setting. What does the setting actually do?

On 3G i always have hsdpa at home, E is edge only which i use for now because battery life is much much better

Newbuy question: No [3G] sign... Only [G] or [E]

Hi,
Apologies for this question, but i cant get 3G sign in my mobile, while other Nokia n73 can get it. I updated my radio to v1.43, and still no [3G] sign...
In some areas i get [G] which means GPRS signal, and in other areas i got [E] which i don't know what does it mean... Any ideas??
Thx in advance
E = Edge...
Thanks Madcap... But as far as i know that Edge (EGPRS) is an extended version of GPRS whilst 3G is based on WCDMA.
My question now is why my Nokia n73 Reading always 3G, and my HTC is not reading it??? Is there is something wrong in HTC? or i must do some settings for that one?
Thx

Hello,
You say that your Nokia can receive a 3G signal and the Hermes cannot - are they both using SIM cards from the same provider and if not then do both providers supply a 3G signal where you are trying to use the Hermes?
If you should be able to receive a 3G signal on your current provider then I'd suggest you try the following:
1. Check the settings of the Hermes Phone. Try looking at the band selection setings by going to Settings - [Personal] Phone - Band Tab then checking that the Network type is set to Auto. The screenshot below shows the screen that I mean. If this is set to GSM then change it to Auto and see if that fixes the problem. If not then try...
2. Force use of 3G. Even with Auto selected your Hermes handset may be using 2G because that signal is much stronger than the 3G signal. You can force the handset to try 3G only by using a 3rd party application such as Bandswitch (an excellent product by Daniel Herrero - see his posts here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=286844&highlight=bandswitch). You can download Bandswitch here: http://commmgrpro.com/_wsn/page2.html. Try using this application to set the handset to 3G and see if that works.
If you should have a 3G signal but none of this helps then it seems you have a problem that may need warranty attention. Is the handset new?
Hope this helps
Hello Tony,
Thank you for your reply. I tried what you advised. Still Cant Capture the 3G signal...
Also, i tried an application called "fieldtest_157.exe". It is described somewhere in this group. I can't find any signal (zero values) for anything related to WCDMA, UMTS, and 3G
This is weird.. I just went into settings>phone .. and there is no BAND tab.. wtf?

Hi Mike,
Have added this reg tweak. It added WCDMA & a couple of protocols in the band section of phone settings. Non of them is working... Is it possible that my radio has a problem? I'm using GPRS very well, and i have excellent GSM connections... What could be the problem?

Is there anyway on the atrix to shut off 4g/3G?

I don't get good 3G at my house and when I'm on edge in get almost full bars. How can I shut off 3G/4g? I did the 4636 thing and selected gsm only but I still see h+. What am I doing wrong ? Is there another way? App?
When change it I just back out by the back button...is there a diffremt way I should do it to save the gsm settings only?
Thanks

Ok .. sigh... first off... the "bars" you are referring to indicates cell strength(voice calls/SMS) not data speed or strength. I think the atrix shows h+ no matter what as on my nexus it would change to H when using hsdpa and 3g for when on 3g and likewise for edge and even g **edit that's a cyanogen mod**. NOW as for switching to 2g only and disabling 3g it is ( settings> wireless & networks> mobile networks> select network = your choice) no need for *#*#4636#*#*
On another note if your getting slowdown on 3g try a restart... 2g is not going to be any faster.

Besides going through the different setting menus, there are widgets available in the market that will act as a shortcut to the last (or semi-last) preference. I have it configured in Extended Controls

i know what the bars mean. what i am saying is, i get a way better signal at home/work with EDGE. i want to be able to shut off 3g, like i use to be able to on my iphone to save battery, and i jsut dont need the connection at home and work.
i went to the settings, and mobile networks is greyed out? how can i get into that menu?

will it shut off 3g? and just keep EDGE? i have done it manually, but it does not seem to work?
no matter how many times i go into the 4636 screen and select GSM ONLY it goes right back to GSM/WCDMA
and i am so sick of looking service when it switches over from EDGE to 3g for ONE bar. what am i doing wrong? why cant i get it to STAY on EDGE>..this no service thing is making me wonder if i want to return this phone..

I forgot that I had to unlock my phone for it to work (canada, go figure) maybe thats why mine isn't greyed out.

After selecting 2g only mode, my Atrix still gets 4g speeds...
I am running the same phone under AT&T with 4.5.141. I rooted the phone and enabled the greyed out preference pane to select 2g only. Regardless of if I select 2g only there, and if I use the *#*#4636#*#* code, I can run speedtest and get 4g speeds .... Do I just need to go the cyanogen mod? Are there other preference panes that I need to edit? I am jealous of all of you out there who have successfully whipped their Atrix 4g!

HSDPA/HSPA/3G mode for Lumia 800

Good day team. Does anybody here knows how to overide connectivity setting for lumia 800 to just connect to a 3g network rather that the device automatically select the best signal strength. In my case i have the EDGE network stronger in signal in my area compared to 3g and as we all know data in edge is slow i would just like to know if you happen to stumble upon a settings to overide it.
Type ##3282#. Then via settings change to 3g only mode.

[HOW-TO] Disable/Enable LTE/3G/4G ETC (no root required)

No root required*
This is pretty simple, go to the dialer and enter;
*#*#4636#*#*
Click on Phone Information
Scroll down to Set preferred network type
Select that one that you want
hit back
My phone kept switching to edge because the wcdma signal in my area is very low but 3 bars of edge is worse than 1 bar of hsdpa+ (no lte in enterprise al) so I choose wcdma only and I always have signal. You can set preferences or choose certain signals only but be aware if you change to a specific signal only and it's not there you will loose service... If you ever need to reset the settings and can't remember the code removing the sim card and reinstalling it resets back to default.
Here's where I found this I take no credit but I can confirm it works on the at&t version of the One.

I thought I saw it in the user manual. Looking at tech specs, no LTE. I read this thread because I wanted to disable Edge, I would rather have no data connection at that time then the frustration of NOTHING connecting on edge.

This is all I get.
Awesome! I just got mine today (Australian version) and don't have the mobile carrier menu, which I think is ridiculous. This did the trick for me to disable LTE
This is the procedure I have used to disable LTE after finally figuring out that my "missed calls with no notification whatsoever" issue (unless caller leaves a VM) was caused by having LTE enabled. Something to do with the One having to switch to HSDPA for voice and the handoff not working right. Sucks not using LTE but I can't be missing calls....
Works a treat, too bad we have to dive into a Service Menu to choose our network preferences.... Thanks ATT...

How long will this maintain your selected network? I've used this many times on past phones, but carrier settings have frequently reverted the setting automatically. at the least, it will reset itself on boot (which isn't necessarily that big of a deal, unless you're Dev-ing and rebooting frequently.). If rooted, there are a number of ways to be able to easily select your desired connection type and have it stick. glad to hear this has worked for your needs so far.

It will revert back after air plane mode/disabling data and on restarts. I just use the app if I notice I'm on edge which is rare and pretty obvious. This is my first smart phone ever since my htc excaliber windows phone that I haven't run unofficial software on. it's just a great package and I feel I'll deal with more issues rooted than I do stock. Can't wait for 4.3 next week the ONLY thing I miss is battery percentage in notification bar lol
I would like to have WCDMA/GSM (auto), but that option is not present.
I'm guessing WCDMA preferred would do the trick? I currently have GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto but I don't use LTE..

Here's a little trick for anyone that's rooted - If you want to be able get the Preferred network mode list when selecting Settings>Mobile Data>Network Mode, you have to change your sku ID in /system/customize/ACC/default.xml. Using a text editor (I always just use the text editor built in to Root Browser), find
Code:
<item type="integer" name="sku_id">7</item>
almost at the end. 7 is ATT's sku, and gives you things like ATT's Data Icons and lying signal bars, but will also enable the NFC icon in the status bar when it's on and remove the Preferred Network mode from Settings. Changing this to 11 will set it as TMobile - Tmo data icons and other tmo settings (I believe T Mobile has the Preferred Network mode settings as well). Changing it to 42 will set it with WWE device settings, so you'll get generic HTC data icons, signal bars that actually work, network mode settings, etc. Obviously Save and Reboot after making the change.

i want to set my network settings to 2G only, what setting should i use? GSM Auto or GSM Only? Also, does changing these 2G/3G/LTE settings by dialing *#*#4636#*#* have any effect on anything else besides the network mode?

Question Stuck on 2G

I'm in the UK, I have been using the phone for a few days now and I'm finding that it often gets stuck on 2G even when there is 4G available. The only way I can get it back on 4G is to go into the SIM settings and manually search for my provider.
Had anyone else had this problem?

You can set it to 4G/5G Manually and it'll change to 2G if you're in a remote location!

Did you ever find a solution? I'm having the exact same issue here in Denmark on a Samsung S21 Ultra (Android 12) and S22 Ultra (Android 12 and also after upgrading to Android 13)
Dialing *#*#4636#*#* had no effect (just hangs up)
Only manual remidy besides waiting 4-6 minutes, is the one you suggested by searching for other network OR entering flight mode.
Seems to be related to roaming between masts, it doesn't happen when I'm in one location but always when in a bus/train/car, my iPhone 12 with a sim from the same carrier stays perfectly connected throughout (or quickly reconnects to 4G/3G when the signal is back)
Super weird...

I actually changed to a different network provider and the issue went away, I suppose the phone just doesn't work well with particular suppliers.
