Right i know youve had a million people ask what the best rom/kernel/modem is best for battery life and i also know their is no actual answer for this.
Im not askin that question... basically..
My girlfriends phone battery life is terrible no matter which miui rom/kernel/modem she is using she never really gets more than 10-12 hours battery life and this is with basically no usage whatsoever - litterally 2-3 15 minute phone calls, a half hour of music a few texts throughout the day and then intermittent facebook usage, no gaming no videos no long calls nothing else...
at night if she doesnt charge her phone it will go from 95% battery to 50-60% by the morning (6-8 hours later).
She doesnt have any background apps (i dont think - pretty sure) nothing intensive is ever running on the phone, and shes a very light user...
Basically i want to know WTF is goin on because she keeps moaning to me about it being a **** phone that she cant use for more than half a day without it dying.
She is runnin the latest MIUI 2.1.20 (5 or 6th version ive flashed over the past 6 months) with MIUI kernel and the ke3 modem i recently wiped the phone/cache/dalvik/internal storage.. EVERYTHING and then did a fresh install of everything to see if she would get a better battery - but no difference...
is there anything i can do to test if something is wrong? test background apps? test deep sleep mode?
i know battery life isnt spectacular on these phones but this definitely isnt as its supposed to be - 10-12 hours!!
Ive tried the siyah kernel with no difference, and there just isnt any apps or anything intensive running that i can stop to reduce the battery drain.
What can i do to solve this frustrating problem and stop her naggin me about it?
ANY help/pointers/advice/jokes would be greatly appreciated anything at all
Wakelocks, wakelocks and wakelocks. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
Oh i just remembered she did ONCE have an awesome version of MIUI that gave her 1-2 days of battery life with regular usage, but after about a month of using it she started gettin force closing on EVERYTHING, so i just updated it and it seemed fixed...
I dont know which version of MIUI it was but i know it was the last version before the *no service glitch* version of MIUI was released (something is telling me V1.9.16???) if somebody knows that would be a great help because i could re-flash that version back on and see if the battery starts working like it should

Stop posting for 10 minutes and do some reading. I don't know if that is what's wrong, because you haven't looked at the wakelocks yet.
i have read it all... and from what i gather this will tell me exactly what is destroying the battery? (causing wakelocks)
and then i can stop/removce/BURN the app thats doing it... thus solving the issue?
Right well the betterbatterystats app is installed, i guess i'll get her to leave it running for a day and post my findings...
i have found out she doesnt use an app for facebook, just the web browser, so basically nothing staring me in the face that could be causing the crap battery.
right well "mediascannerservice" is coming up at at 95.4% on partial wakelocks....
And in the battery usage settings folder its floating around 60%
So im thinking that this is whats killing the battery, so how do i go about fixing this problem?

Could be some dodgey media on her SD card keeping the media scanner running, best bet is to remove all media, videos, pics, etc, and see what happens.
Take a screenshot of the wake lock part of the screen.
Also use os monitor to see if anything is using a lot of CPU.

Depends what else is going on, but if she's not using the screen much and the media scanner is going nuts then yes, as I think that falls under Android os.
Would still be good to get that screenshot.

ok will set about gettin you a screen shot, after deleting that picture folder the % on mediascanner has gone RIGHT down to 6%...

Oh and "screen on" is at 28.5% whereas awake is on 74.4% after about 40 minutes unplugged
any thoughts guys?
Was it the media scanner goin crazy and i/she should now expect a half decent battery?
From what you've said it seems it was a media scanner issue. Try it for a day & see how it goes. That's the only way you're going to find out.

I really have a bad battery drain, I fully charged my new Samsung Galaxy S2 from 0% battery to 100% when it was off (after a calibration).
I have set all tips for battery consuming etc, etc.. I installed BetterBatteryStats and it seems like gtalk_async_conn (Google Services) used 17% of the battery in the last 40 minutes.
Is there anything I can do to disable this? I disabled the sign-in in Gtalk settings, but it's still wasting my battery.

if you are using BetterBatteryStats no need for an own thread, there's one already (use search).
In your OP you mixed count and percent, your problem is more than gtalk if your consumption is as you said.
following the hot-to for bbs start with giving us some details about awake and screen on but do yourself a favor, let a mod close this thread and post your questions together with the missing info in the right thread.

GTalk has not used 17% as you mistakenly believe. It has used only 3.6% as per your attached screenshot. So GTalk is not the only service responsible for your battery drain.
That said, it is a fact acknowledged by almost all the owners of SGS II that Low Battery Life and Low Volume of sound output are the two sore points of this phone. Samsung should seriously do something to improve Battery Life and Sound volume of this phone. Hope something comes up in the next updates.
Maps also should be running. Must be also one of the reasons.
And juice defender also consume battery.

3 days???? Which ROM? A lot of people exaggerate here. I'm on CF Rooted stock KF3 with 200+ apps and it lasts for only about 18 hours in normal usage.
i also want to see that 3 day....
Yup juice defender is nothing if you know what your doing.
Example : if you an app and minimize it it will be running in background if you wont be using the app for quite awhile kill the app using task killer. If example you use facebook app. And you u are using it frequently but you kill it and reopen it. It will consume more battery. Only kill app that you wont use.
And disable data went not using and use 2g network when not using data.

i guess we are in the same boat then, better battery stats also show me nothing suspicous,
with little to normal use, my s2 can hardly go for 6 to 7 hours, everything off, only 3g on..
that is on stock rom, im now testing CM7 build 38
Charged 100% go recovery wipe battery stats..
It take sometime for the bateery to function properly.. a day or two.. so after the calabaration let it go to nearly 10% then charge till 100% without disturbing it.

most definitely, i was a big fan of Juice Defender Ultimate but the reality is it actually uses up almost as much as it saves, this was pointed out to me and it is 100% true, since i froze it yesterday im having superb battery life my phone wont die until tomorrow i estimate ill get up to around 40 hours with about 1 call, 15/20 texts and medium internet usage, and some music so far and ive 47% left, the battery was charged to 100% at 23.50 last night and i left it on all night with data enabled and the drain was only 6% in almost 8 hours..

First of all I've search through the forums, google, samsung support and even friends with the SGS2 as well yet I keep having the same problem.
No matter what I do, play games or just leave it on standby my battery dies in 5-6 hours.
I'm on Android stock 2.3.4 non-rooted, Baseband version I9100UHK1 kernel version [email protected] #2 Build Number GINGERBREAD.UHKI2
Brightness always at minimun, I changed TouchWiz to go launcher with a minimal setup where my icons are just white text and my background is quite dark, I don't run any app like twitter or facebook or anything like that, just pulse but i have only 3 feeds on it and they have news pushed every 5-6 hours.
Also I have widget locker, and the app i semi-use a lot is WhatsApp.
The thing is I've hear the battery isn't the best but most of the people I know get at least 8 hours with it and is driving me crazy since I go to work around 7 and when I'm going to lunch I'm hitting 15%...
I can provide any info required but I would really like some help here, I want to know if maybe I had a defective battery or something or if there is something wrong with my phone.
Although If I'm on a WIFI the phone can last up to 10 hours, so perhaps I was thinking i was having a signal problem so I switched my network mode from AUTO to WCDMA only since I like to use the 3.5G network since in my country the 3G network barely reaches 256K...
I also have widget locker.
Well that's about much the info I think I can give so far... tomorrow I'll be posting a picture around lunch with the battery usage so you can see how fast it drops, it's amazing it takes me 7 minutes to get to the office and in those 7 minutes I would go from 100% to 97% easy...
Post a screenshot of your battery usage.
Sounds like an app is keeping your phone from entering deep sleep, try downloading betterbatterystats from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809&highlight=better+battery+stats to see if you can track down the offending app. There is plenty of explanation in the thread that should help you locate the source of the problem.
Ill be posting a battery usage screenshot tomorrow and getting that BetterBatteryMonitor since today I've been with the wifi all day.

Two hours and im already at 50% i sent three text and made a 2 min phone call

im not too great with BBS stats. What I do know however is that using the phone with no apps installed, then installing each app u like one by one always helps. As someone explained earlier your phone is awake a hell of alot more than your screen on time. Im currently on 27 hours with 3 hours screen on time and my batt is still on 35% so thats an indication of the battery life you should be able to get with the stock battery.
Your alarm manager is draining a lot of battery though, if i'm not mistaken, the alarm manager has something to do with apps that sync, so something that syncs is more than likely draining your battery. Just noticed you have liveprofile. I must say Liveprofile DRAINED THE HELL out of my battery, it doesn't happen to everyone but once I uninstalled liveprofile my battery issues went away real quick
Uninstall whatsapp and see how your battery is then.
Whenever I install one of those style of apps my battery life drops to what you have now. Uninstall and I gain a couple of hours all around.
Whatsapp shouldn't cause issues, I have used it since day one and most people report it to be fine. Liveprofile however just runs non stop
Are you using VoIP? If yes, try to disable sip registration. When I had it enabled, my battery would drop around 5% an hour on standby but now it drops 1% every 3 hours or something. Today I'm 12 hours on battery with a couple of phone calls, 20-30 minutes gaming, an hour of internet browsing, some music and wifi on for 5 hours and I'm still on 81%. I use Checkrom 3.1.1 with Speedmod kernel and ondemand governor with no underclock or undervolt. Brightness at 40%, a gmail account with push enabled and another e-mail account syncing every hour.
You should find out what app wakes up your phone so often and uninstall it. It may help if you flash another kernel too.
Ive always had a problem with whatsapp, nomatter how I configure it it will take on average 3hours off my standby time. Did it on my HTC Hero, Does it on my SGS2.
I try reporting it to the devs they just ignore me.
I uninstall it and my battery life comes back up to normal. I admit though that others are definitely worse, but I am just saying Ive personally had drain issues with Whatsapp over two different handsets over the space of 9months/a year.
Defo not whatsapp i have it and its never held a killer wake lock. But u defo have a badass wake lock. One of the worse ive seen. What social apps do u have? And whats ur syncing like?

Hmm. You said you "always charge your battery from dead flat" before. That made it sound like you were doing it on purpose. But I digress.
Also, you should have no problems having the battery go the full day, (I can go the full day no problem - unless I'm constantly using the phone) unless you have something holding a wake lock. Have you installed BetterBatteryStats and monitored your wake locks to see if something is misbehaving?
Yes I have wakelock issues, But last time I tried to give starts thier was an issue with how I submitted it from the phone.
Anyway I sleep very little, and my phone is almost ALWAYS on the lack of a "proper job" means I don't have an 8 hour period of time where my phone isn't getting much use.
Do NOT worry its normal the triangle appeared because your battery has totally finished just Wait for 2 minutes and the triangle will disappear

Well, you should focus on solving those, and your battery life will improve.
Otherwise, my only other advice is to simply have more chargers readily available. I keep one at my office, a car charger each in my car and my girlfriend's car, and a couple at home.

That does look pretty bad. What is your details under display? (screen on time)
EDIT to add: actually, your screen looks like it might be on for a long time? (solid blue line under battery graph, starting under the "m" in 4h 56m 15s on battery text) If your screen on time is around 3.75 - 4 hours, this is normal.
To get a better gauge, post screenshots after you click both the battery graph above, (which will show signal, wifi, screen on, awake, and charging graphs as well) and the Screen entry. (to show screen on time)

chamonix's reply suggests you try a different modem, essentially. He's saying that in the dump you posted, RILJ held a 3.5 hour wake lock, which is unusually long. Could be that the modem you have flashed right now was struggling to find signal, so it was holding a wake lock.
Have you tried flashing a different modem yet?

Depends on what you want to look at.
But you're saying the screenshot above is a week old, and the BBS dump you linked to is clearly months old (from Feb 17), so maybe it's worth it to post more recent screen shots and dumps? Otherwise, can you honestly say you've not changed ANYTHING on your phone since either the screenshot or dumps were taken?
No one can tell you anything about how your phone is behaving today using information that is outdated.
The screenshot nothing has changed since then, I have changed things since the dump.
Well I want to kind out why my phone is awake when my it should be sleeping I supppose.
That screenshot their was a day when I woke up and used the device for an hour or so, and then I hadn't used the phone till about 12 hours later.
As you can see the phone kept waking up most of the day.
The info on Android OS for that screen shot was CPU Total 1h 6m, Kept Awake 4H 9m
As I'm looking at the usage. Maps seems to be the biggest component but I haven't used Maps at all. And location services icon is basically on the whole time. And I tried disabling everything and that icon is still there. I wonder if thats the issue.
I left the phone on my desk (no wifi) at 50% and when I work up, it drained to 4%. That's a big no no.
Wondering if anyone is having the same issue.
Thanks,

try opening maps so it can get a lock on, then exiting. maps might be running in the background.
Maybe play with it for a couple more days, and if you keep having issues just exchange it for a new one.
That kind of battery drain doesn't seem right to me. I I'm a fairly heavy user and I'm able to get almost a whole day out of the battery

I definitely don't have this issue but it sounds very reminiscent of the maps/latitude issue that plagued jellybean roms for a while and prevented deep sleep. I would try to get a maps gps lock and disable location sharing in latitude settings and see. If it persists have it swapped.

Not seeing that here at all. I'm at 12 hrs 48 minutes and have 39% left. Very heavy usage for me. My Rezound would have given it up a couple of hours ago.

Yeah, I had the same problem, go into maps settings and turn off location sharing and background location reporting and see if that works. :good:
I've been having awful battery drain too. I know the phone has pretty solid battery life - it's clear that something is draining my battery.
Here's a screenshot after about 2.5 hours off the charger. I was at around 67% and only had used 30 minutes of screen on time. The screen had used likr 4% battery...and apps were at 81%.

Most definitely a wake-lock issue. Something is staying awake. Go into gsam, and on the launch screen look at the app usage list on the bottom. Something will have a very large % of usage. Then you will have to deal with that app.
I assume your post was in reference to the OP - however, looking at the app usage list doesn't always tell what app is causing problems.
Look at the screen shot I posted right above your post. The top 3 %'s aren't apps, and it really gives no reference as to what could be causing my kernel to be so high ont he list.

If you choose app usage, then press the little arrow at the top right of the screen, it will list options. Choose the one that says "view time held awake". This should show you the offending app.

Oh, true. Thanks for that! I've never known about that feature. I'll have to check it tomorrow during the day and see what it says. I have a feeling it's just going to say "Android System" or "System *wakelock*" though.
Dude restrict the background data this problem will surely stop...but when using play store remove the restriction.as it won't work without background data. ..

Non of you are truly "heavy" users if a 2,000 mAh battery running a quad core processor, and a 5" screen last you 12 hours with 40% left. You're an extremely light user. Heavy.... lmfao
I could drain that battery in 6-8 hour period, and that's not even streaming videos, etc

U should reset ur phone. G2 battery is very awesome. I turn on everything 3g, WiFi, sync, Facebook, viber, ... And I use my phone to read news whenever I have time, so my screen time on of my phone one day is usually 4 hours. Everyday I get home with approx 40% of battery. But one thing I recommend u is u should buy the app lux auto brightness replace for stock auto brightness. I was really surprise after I installed that app, it save for my about one hour screen time.

Download "Better Battery Stats" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.asksven.betterbatterystats&hl=en
Take a look at the wakelocks, alarms and see what is keeping your phone awake.
Also , posting a screenshot of your battery life graph would be beneficial.
Cheers !
Edit: Agree with quachhanthanh about Lux Auto Brightness. Totally worth the money , even though the free app does its job admirably.
Ah good idea with lux auto brightness.
I will test this too.
The stock auto brightness never works good on my phone.

Ah ok thank you , could have known that myself
It really helps to know the stats to start. A rogue app or service can cause a lot of issues. I had a contact sync issue that drained my battery quickly. Found and fixed.
I use greenify(really good for battery life) and also under google settings, I mean the app you have called google settings, uncheck all those things you dont need including under Android Device Manager -> Remotely locate this device. I disabled alot of things in there. If you need to leave wifi on you can also change your wifi scan intervals to like 360 in the build.prop. Thats just for starters.
Great battery here!
As has been said, a battery graph will help out a great deal. If you have a rogue app, it will show a higher percentage of usage than other similar apps. If services really high, you might want to take a look at exactly which services are running. Be sure to always disable any you don't actually use. Also make sure your screen is set to turn off quickly, or use that nifty knock off feature. One last thing, if you are in a spotty coverage area, your radio will broadcast at maximum power trying to find a tower. That searching will kill any battery.

I'm getting horrible battery life.. About 2.5 hours screen time with 45% left. Screen has only used 20% of the battery.. its mostly being used up by Android System (33%) and Android OS(13%). I've got wakelock detector installed and its saying most of the time my phone is in deep sleep... God know's what's the issue.
P.S: I'm even using DS Battery Saver to force deep sleep... I really don't know why the OS and system are using so much battery!
P.S: Using better battery stats, it seems I'm having the activity manager causing wakelocks and the alarm rtc and powermanager service causing wakelocks... anyone has any idea how to stop this?
Almost 40hr with 4.35hr of screen time and still 38% left.
What can i say. I am happy
in two days and im with 20% , is that good or bad?
with normal use

Depends on what you do with the phone. I can drop 20% in like 3hrs easily using spotify alone.
At the moment im at 37h 12m with 3h 8m screen on. Im at 40%.
Here are my stats. I wonder why there's such a variance between different phones. Do LG source batteries from many different manufacturers? Maybe they don't do enough QA on the batteries? Battery life for me isn't terrible compared to other Android phones I've used (many won't even last a day), but I definitely need to charge it every night.

Useless, can't see your app usage.
I recommend posting in the comparative battery analysis thread.
Make sure you post all screen shots otherwise OP will be on your case.

Wow, how did you manage that?
Hehehehehehehehe with moderate usage, kernel tweaks and a bunch of other battery saving stuff, i get insane battery life... this is my record
edit: in the screenshot, you can see thats in charging, thats because to get the screenies, i need to plug my phone to the charger to boot it up haha
