First of all i want to thank you in advance for any help in this matter. Following the instructions in the forum, i downloaded the latest version of Flashtool available (0.6.7.0). After installed in my windows 7 (32 bits) notebook, i run the application and connect the phone. The software recognize the unit and the android version without problems. So i decide and press the root option (The unlocked padlock) and it begin to work. At the end of the process an error message appeared indicating that it can install the busybox software and its stop. The phone is working, but nothing appeared regarding if it root the unit (I think that that no), so when i ran the flashtool utility again, at this time the unlocked padlock is not available. Can anybody help me with that i will appreciate so much.
Waow Nobody can help me in this matter?

Try upgrading to 2.1 if u want to stay on 1.6 try get a flashable 1.6 idk if they do them
Good luck

DonutHD
SE kernel

To root 1.6 you need UniversalAndroot-1.6.2-beta5.apk
That work perfect and you could root temporary or full
Try to find it or ask here if someone have it on sd and attach it
;-)
To root Android 1.6 z4root should work. Just search for it

@OP:
I think you would want to upgrade to 2.3.3 then use the zergRush exploit on flashtool to root your phone.
Thanks and additional question
Thank you everybody for your recommendations. Some of you recommend to upgrade to the latest version, my question is if i can use this latest version of flash tool to upgrade from version 1.6 or do i need to use an older version of the flashtool and which version.
Thanks again

Hey everyone,
I havent been on here in a while but recently got a new Xperia x10 and it's running 1.6 so i'd like to root it. Except that every rooting guide i found is written in Greek (or so it seems) so I dont understand the instructions. I downloaded one file that came with all or vsorts of other files and the HowTo file said I had to edit some kind of registry or something. Can anyone just post me an easy step-by-step guide with all the neccecary files and detailed steps to root my phone please? I REALLY wanted 2.1!!! Thanks in advance!
You can do something called flash which will give you 2.1 I just flashed my wife's X10 too 2.1 no root required follow this

Thanks for the quick response!
So what do I do? Just plug my phone in, mount it, and run the ADB.exe file??
Also, which firmware should I use if I'm American?

I tried to put my phone into flash mode but it wouldnt work. I dont know what i'm doing wrong! I'm never gonna get 2.1 am i!?
You have everything installed properly? Theres no reason you shouldn't be able to go into flash mod. Awww yea make sure your battery is atleast 50%

Firstly, you do not need to root your phone before you can update to 2.1 firmware.
Have you tried to simply use PC Companion to try to update your firmware?

I was under the impression that the 2.1 firmware has not been released to customers in the US and if I wanted 2.1 I'd have to flash/root my phone. I did connect my phone with PC Companion and tried the software update but it said my phone was already up to date with 1.6. I'm a total noob to android and have no idea how any of this works! I really appreciate the help, I just really want to get 2.1 on my brand new x10
I told you how to do it follow the video. Its very simple

Can anyone else shed some light on my issue? Thanks!
Edit: OK so i attempted to do this process again on a different computer and was able to get everything going perfectly until the flasher program says "searching for xperia". IT just gets stuck there and doesnt do anything. I know I'm putting it into flash mode properly because at one point i ran the Update Software program while i was running the flasher and the Update program recognized the phone was in flash mode immediately.
I updated it to latest release of android 2.1
The Build number if 2.1.A.0.435
Kernel : 2.6.29
Baseband version : 2.1.54
It includes multitouch,hd video recording,5 homescreens etc..
So should i root it to get 2.2 Froyo ?
Somewhere i read that if you root your phone, your warranty is voided but i also read that if you flash back to your original firmware, you get back your warranty.
Well i am from india,so the phone is not locked(i think) because i can insert sim of any company on it.
So will my warranty voided if i root my phone ?
Are there any risks if we root our phone and is it worth the risk ?
thanks to the developers working here we have a completely safe way to root our phones (of course it is easy as well)
first you need is to download the flashtool 0.26 (in the X10 android development forum)
then connect your phone into PC in the usb debugging mode
open the flashtool and click the root button, the programme will push the root permission onto your device
then install busybox and superuser from market
as for risks, i'm not a pro here so if anyone can also answer about that =P
But what about warranty ? Thats my major conern

If you don't change your firmware, then rooting your phone shouldn't void your warranty. So this method shouldn't void your warranty.
You can flash a stock firmware back to make it appear as if u did nothing. From what I read ppl have had full success with that.

While you're there, just push the JIT function on - makes a huge difference to performance
I just had one more doubt : Does Rooting Format your phone ?
@goRt : Can you please tell me a bit more about JIT ?
@mrljlamon : Do i need to backup my current firmware or it will automatically be done by SEUS ?
No!

Well i finally rooted it .. using superoneclick 1.6.5
Now what can i do more on it ?
JIT, or the "just in time compiler" is the algorithm used in froyo to enhance the speed of the system
there's a post on that mod in the android development section, which requires you to install xRecovery to flash that into your phone (refer to that post for more details)
for warranty issues, yes, rooting will void your warranty
but reverting everything back to stock is easy as you can flash back to the stock rom using the xda global version or go to SEUS and select the 'recover/repair' option
Wait!
Perhaps you should wait until a Absolutely stable, Daily use Rom get released!
hey bro
i just got my xperia x10i for about 2 weeks ago
And yesterday i finally able to root it (lol too slow)
i tried the z4root its not working for me, so i try the superoneclick and yes it rooted mine
After that i try reflash my xperia with official firmware agian, walla! it back to whatever you got from Sony Ericsson store (non root-ed etc) i doing this just to test whether will it unroot and yes it will unroot if you run the pc compian update tools
And i re-root agn now its rooted (i am going to try honeycomb mod soon)
And rooting might void waranty but, unroot it then warraty should be back
And if you follow the instruction welly, then i guess no problem will occur on ur x10i
Thanks all ...
I finally rooted my phone using superoneclick v1.6.5
then installed jit and removed crap apps.
Thanks to XDA people ..
Kinda got stuck in between on SE screen but kinda figured how to work again ..
yes, normally first boots after flashing/ installing stuff through xRecovery are longer.
just be patient with that
Have an Xperia X10 with Android 2.1. Wanted to root my phone to upgrade to gingerbread. However i admit i got confused with the plethora of links and pages and 6 hours later i have a phone that only has "Sony Ericsson" written on it.
Here's how i started - based on DoomLord's instructions i installed Flashtool (from here) . HOwever I was unable to find xrecovery folders in the log messages.
Followed step by step procedure but realised that each time i upgraded the kernel, phone seemed to be going into some bootloop.
I realised that this may be due to my phone running on Android 2.1
SO i moved to another thread . Downloaded these files with the hope that they would work.
meanwhile was also following video through a similar page that was detailing the methods for installing custom ROMs. The reason i followed another source is only because the intsructions on all these pages seemed very confusing.
i believe i may have misled myself by following two different procedures here or the files i downloaded were incorrect.
After I upgraded the kernel as per doomlord's instructions, i went into xRecovery and formatted the data folders. I had already copied the ROM files provided by Doomlord in this thread onto my SD card under a new folder. However, xRecovery was asking for .Zip files while there were .7z .
Tl;dr - formatted data on xRecovery and did not have the correct updated files. phone is not functioning now
Tragically so, I am now left with an Xperia that only seems to be displaying the words "Sony Ericsson". I wish to learn from this experience but hope its not at the cost of a good phone!
Would the experts believe that this phone can be un-bricked now???
your phone is not bricked so dont worry. just make sure you have the newest flashtool. dont upgrade the kernel if you are staying on 2.1. if youhavent downgaded the kernel then do so. if it doesnt work, just download your baseband and firmware you want. as for rooting on 2.1, you can use super one click. for 2.3, you hav to use the flashtool
If you are on 2.1, then you don't have to go through all the downgrade/upgrade hassel.
Just turn on debugging and use flashtool/superoneclick to root.

Wow... such a relief to know that. Was exasperated and down-beat to even look at my phone.
please help me in identifying the right version of softwares and protocols to follow. In the current state, i connected my phone and flashed it once using flash tool but there has been no progress. Am i missing out a few steps?
How do i upgrade to 2.3 eventually?
Thanks a lot for the support and motivation

Reading this from office now. Shall check in a few hours once i'm back home.
Alright, so I've been working on this issue for about 3 days now. Everytime I think I make headway, nothing seems to come about. I, for all intents and purposes, am completely stuck and need help.
Here are my phone stats
Android 2.3.3, Generic Stock, Unrooted, Locked Bootloader
Sony Ericsson X10i
Baseband 2.1.71
Build Number 3.0.1.G.0.75
Kernel Version [email protected] #1
For my experience, I'm fairly capable around solving problems. I've rooted my phone before, and was running TripNRaver's MIUI for my X10. Worked decent, however I was wanting to upgrade it to a new ROM. Decided to go with A1exander's MIUI. I downloaded all the needed items, unlocked my bootloader without a problem, flashed the ROM via XRecovery, and (like an idiot) put the sim card in backwards. Didn't realize this until AFTER I had tried to change the baseband down to 2.1.54. When it simply froze on the SE screen, I tried to revert it back to 2.1.71. Obviously, this didn't work either, so I reverted it back to Stock 2.1, From there I tried to root it like I did before, however it would not root. I then upgraded it to 2.3.3 to follow the instructions on the new rooting methods. Everything I tried to do, from Flashtool, to SuperOneClick, would not let it root. No SuperUser program was installed. After trying this multiple times, following the instructions to the letter, and watching the videos many times, there was no rooting of this phone by those methods.
Here is the error message I get from Flash Tool
06/032/2011 22:32:20 - ERROR - Cannot identify your device. Found while expecting X10, E10, U20 or E15 (read from ro.product.model from build.prop)
From there, I select "X10" and this shows
06/032/2011 22:32:22 - INFO - Connected device : X10
06/032/2011 22:32:22 - INFO - Installed version of busybox :
Now, even if I install Busybox from the Market, it still shows the same message. So, I go into ADB, pull the build.prop and see what's going on there, this is what it shows.
ro.product.model=X10i
ro.product.model=rachael#
ro.product.brand=Sony-Ericsson#
ro.product.name=rachael#
ro.product.device=rachael
ro.product.board=es209ra
ro.product.cpu.abi=armeabi-v7a
ro.product.cpu.abi2=armeabi
ro.product.manufacturer=Sony Ericsson
ro.product.locale.language=en
ro.product.locale.region=GB
So, I edit the build.prop to reflect X10, however I can't push it back to the system folder, as it tells me it is a read-only folder. Trying to remount in ADB says operation not permitted.
So, that's where I'm at, A stock X10, running 2.3.3, non-rooted, non-unlocked bootloader. I have SuperOneClick, Flash Tool, ADB, SDK Manager, PC Companion.
Please help me figure out what I need to do to get this rooted, and start running A1exander's MIUI. Thanks!
My first suggestion.
Borrow someone elses sim card to see if its that (It probably isnt but good to make sure)
Second.
Have you got the latest flashtool?
Well, I'm certain the SIM card is good. Right now, running on Stock 2.3.3, it runs as good as a stock ROM could be, no issues there. I'll try my wife's SIM and see if that could be it.
[UPDATE] It's not the SIM card, just tried my wife's and the same thing happens.
Second, my Flashtool is 0.2.9.1
Java Ver. 1.6.0_24
OS ver. 6.1
You probably need to reflash an older 2.1 with an older basband and kernel... then start from there by rooting it and installing xrecovery 3...
Its been a while but I recall that 2.3.3 stock was not easily root-able
there was some kind of trick where you use flashtool and install the kernel and/or baseband, then without rebooting, you pull out the batttery to flash a pre-rooted ROM with Xrecovery.
So go back to 2.1 with an appropriately older kernel (.49??? I think) and baseband.
Edit1
Did you try other, newer pre-rooted 2.3 roms like EWJet? I'm using the full hulk version with unlocked bootloader and it's been awesome smooth running at 1.13Ghz. Just make sure you follow the install guide step by step and flash both FTF files with flashtool in step 1.1.
If you don't like EWJet, install MIUI afterwards will be easy too.
I'll definitely give this a shot! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'll let you know how it turns out.
[EDIT 1] One question, I don't have XRecovery, and I can't install XRecovery that I know of without rooting the phone, which I can't do. How can I install a new ROM if I can't install it with XRecovery.

go here and find a 2.1 generic to start off of, I think the files come with a flashtool or you may need to use the new flashtool since you are on 2.3
EDIT1
I looked throught the list on the page linked above, the 2.1 generics are in the second section "all branded kits for X10i). Maybe use file number 8 since I recall Orange UK X10 kits had strange behavior with foreign sims....
Man! I can't thank you enough! I'm back in business now, got the phone rooted, XRecovery installed, and I'm free and clear to getting back to where I want! Looks like my stock 2.1 that I tried to root before wouldn't root through SuperOneClick.
Man, so much easier this time, I appreciate the help and suggestions! Thanks again!
no no no
don't thank me again

Hi.I'm facing problem with rooting my x10.
I tried to downgrade my phone to 2.1 and root it but the flashtool cannot recognise my phone.It keep blank and din show any info like busybox version or other things...
I tried to seek help from gregbradley but no luck.
What should i do?
Thx
Have you enabled USB debugging. And have drivers installed. And pls check with the older version of flashtool. Some ppl have used it and solved their problem.
USB debugging is on and the latest drivers are installed but doomlord zergrush exploit still prompting adb server is out of date..
I tried using flashtool 0.2.9.1 but it also cannot recognise my phone..
After manually choose the device as x10 it din show my busybox version as none instead of leave it blank...I think the problem is my phone cannot be recognise...
What should i do the next?
did you flash 2.1 with appropriate kernel and baseband? baseband .49 was one of the most developed one.
You probably need to reflash an older 2.1 with an older basband and kernel... then start from there by rooting it and installing xrecovery 3...
go here and find an older 2.1 generic to start off of, I think the files come with its own flashtool, kernel, and baseband
Also, on the page linked above, the 2.1 generics are in the second section "all branded kits for X10i". Maybe use file number 8 since I recall specific roms like Orange UK X10 kits had strange behavior with foreign sims and rooting
after flashing the older 2.1, root and install xrecovery with newest flashtool (v3?)... from there, you can go into custom pre-rooted 2.1 to 2.3 roms.
i flashed back to 2.1 but the flashtool still do not recognise my phone..
So i can't root it with flash tool..
I tried to update my phone to stock 2.3.3 and root it with doomlord zergrush exploit but it keep prompting adb server is out of date even i made sure my driver is the latest..

@all
I have helped in this case.
I have been through the process of checking noob mistakes with him and also checking that adb is up todate. Both with gordons gate and pccompanion/seus.
Furthermore i have tried manually updating drivers through device manager
my personal opinion is a faulty phone or or incompatability with windows (32/64 bit) but i am not knowlagable in this area, this is why I asked him to seek help elsewhere....
Before I update to 2.3.3 I managed to root my x10 with FW 2.1
After I install pre-rooted rom I have no problem at all
I think my computer has no problem in compability
But since I update to wolfbreak V6,my camera start giving problem to me..
gregbradley,u said my phone may be a faulty phone,so should i send my phone to shop for repair?
Did you try on another pc?
Did you wipe x10 device id in registry?
Try a diifferent USB port... with new cable?
The easiest is to get it returned and replaced but will they accept it?
Before you send it to Sony authorised repair shop just use SEUS and turn it back to normal(no root).
