It's broken hasn't it... - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What a start to the day....
Sg2 would not turn on. Tried loads and then left it. Suddenly a few mins later
it came on but was hung on the boot screen. Now its turning on but just hangs
a frozen boot screen.
So thought I would use ODIN to wipe it and start a fresh. Odin also just hangs
at the start at NAND WRITE START cache.img and goes no futher ever.
I tried to do a restore in CWM but again hung and eventually failed with cant find file error messages.
Seems like internal memory is screwed or something any ideas?

Can you get into download mode (power/home/volume down) ?

Have you tried booting into download mode (as stated above), or using a jig? They cost a few dollars from Ebay, but they're a life saver in these such situations.
Have you tried to flash a different ROM? Maybe the cache.img is a dud or possibly corrupted?

can get into download mode but because a flash failed CWM is gone and just get "firmware update encountered an error".....just tried a different firmware download in odin..again hangs on NAND WRITE START....
read other threads with same error , not looking good

I think a JTAG repair will probably be cheaper for you than paying Samsung to fix it. Do a search on here/Google to find a JTAG repairer close to you. If you can't find one near you, there's at least one that I know of you can post your phone to, have them repair it & they'll post it back.

Since the phone already is in "has to be sent in anyways" state, I think this quallifies for the "last resort", only do this as last step before packing it in for sending to service.
Try an Odin flash with a .PIT file and "[X] Repartition" checked.
But be very carefull with that, double check and tripplecheck everything is perfectly set up (correct stock ROM for your model, USB connection could sustain an earthquake, PC will not crash or loose power.... all that stuff) because this could totally kill it when something goes wrong.
Well, once the preflight is done, hit the mighty "Start" button and start to pray.

Well tried ext option and hangs on setting partition. I'm worried the phone is actually proper broken since its not flashing or rom issues that was the original problem. Just went off, wouldnt turn on, left it a while...suddenly on but hanging on boot everytime..then the flashing attempts to realise more broken than ever! Will service fix that?, im with vodafone UK and they will be arsy if they find custom rom flashes etc? Can I send direct to samsung...? thanks for ur help peeps!

Are you using a single file when your trying to flash? I had an issue where it was stuck on the nand part, then I flashed using three files, PDA, Modem, Csc, and it was successful.
But seeing that you've tried repartition and that didn't work, you may be screwed.

Well, if it's that broken that nothing boots, nothing shows, nothing even flashes, I doubt they can see you got a custom ROM on it (Samsung could, but would very likely not bother checking).
So just tell them it failed during updating with KIES.
Since KIES is "teh craps" and everybody know that, they will likely go "oh yah, another one"

Are you using the original Samsung data/USB cable when you are trying to flash with Odin ? If not, do it.

Yeah, I tried to use a data cable that came with an HTC once. For some odd reason, it didn't work.

I've had Odin flashes go.wrong before and almost always fixed it by rebooting or restarting Odin. Maybe even try on a different PC. For me a 3 part file with pit + repartition has always done the trick.
However it does seem like your problem may be hardware related.

This is a very good tip, thanks lol, popping into a store at diner time.......
##update## actually download mode loads with custom rom count (24) oops and very new firmware so dont think can get round that?

If they check that you might be in a bit of trouble warranty-wise. Or you might be lucky. If you can wait a few days or however long it takes to get a jig, might be worth getting one.

Regardless, please try the original cable, you have nothing to lose.
For the first few months, I was flashing ROM's fine with an el cheapo usb cable from ebay then suddenly, Odin would always hang. Reverted to original cable and everything has been fine ever since. I have also noticed that the file transfers and Kies Backups are noticeably quicker on the original cable.
Given you can access download mode, I'm crossing my fingers for you that its only a soft brick. Also, try plugging in the usb cable to a port directly on the motherboard (ie not one of those front panel extensions), also try different computers.

I thought jigs didnt work after a certain firmware or are they're new jigs available?
thanks

Depends on what version firmware you have on your phone/what you tried to flash. Do you remember either/both of those ?

They don't work the new bootloader, but if you got your ROMs from Intratech's thread, most of them have the bootloaders replaced with the old one.
You could also try to flash the old-bootloader-only .tar that is also in Intratech's thread if the jig doesn't work, maybe it at least manages to flash that one so you can reset the counter.

well it's officially knackered
tried original samsung cable - same problem
different computer - pit and 3 files plus single files , same problem
cant even flash any old bootloaders to reset the jig!
so gutted it ran my life for me schedules, to do, all sorts, oh well
goosed - thanks anyway

[Q] I think I bricked my phone... need confirmation.

My problem is that I had no idea that i9000 and Fascinate are complete diffrent firmwares. I flashed the 2.2 i9000 onto my Fascinate, I didn't find out this was a huge FUBAR until after the phone wasn't turning on and then I did some extensive searching. So now flashed the CWMRecovery and then the Stock-i500 files. Except for the Recovery file which fails when I try to run it on Odin... I'm completely lost. If anyone knows if it's possible to fix my phone, I would appreciate the help
its bricked. is it still under warranty? tell them it froze and wont turn on. are u stuck in a boot loop?
It was.. it would try to boot up into i9000 then the regular Samsung logo and then I'd get a blue pixelated mess... now when I hit the power buitton there's a cell phone and PC picture with a triangled exclamation mark in the center.

Sounds like it wants to be hooked back up, like it's not out of download mode. That's happened to me when I've unplugged the USB cable when it wasn't expecting me to. Dunno, there is a thread here somewhere about flashing the wrong image, then flashing an intermediary image, then the VZW image and getting things back. Not sure if it applies here, though... Good luck...
Boot in Download mode again
Dont Use Samsung MicroUSB Cable use any Good Quality MicroUSB instead
Flash the Clockwory Kernal and Recovery using ODIN
Copy ClockworkMod Recovery in update.zip format to SDCard
Boot into Recovery in Default Samsung Recovery Apply Update this will take you to clockwork
Flash any Compatible Clean ROM and you are in business,For me this Worked
You see the cable / triangle icon, it means your flash failed to take, and was incomplete. You need to re-flash, start with the kernel. I would use the CWM kernel as mentioned. If that fails let us know.
The only real thing you can do to "brick" this phone is to overwrite bml12 (modem.bin). For example, if you flashed anything with the "phone" box in odin, that will kill your modem. Other than that it will take a little work, but it's all recoverable.
Ok. For one, i have posted warnings all over the place to not do what you did.
And two, if what you flashed an Odin restore file with a modem in it, you will no longer have a working phone. We don't have a way to fix it. Sorry dude, best bet is to take it back to verizon and beg for a warranty replacement. If you are at the phone and computer icon right now, i would just leave it and take it into vzw like that.

Yeah. Problem is this isn't the first site I went to. There were no warnings in the other guides... Just said "Upgrade Galaxy S to 2.2" It never mentioned it was only for the i9000 model... I've learned my lesson tho. Luckily my buddy works at Verizon and I don't have to jump through rings of fire to get a replacement. Thanks everyone

Vibrant Dead after firmware update Fail

Hi to everyone! Is my first thread here. I have a Samsung Vibrant SGH-T959 and try to update using Odin3 v1.85. Everything go well but at end apear Fail in Odin and the phone turn off. I think the phone go to restart but never turn on again and I can't turn on now. I press power botton and no response. I try to put it in download mode or recovery mode and I can't. What is next? I order a JIG, but a friend told me that no correct my problem.
One does not update via Odin (well 99% of the time IMO) Odin is usually used to revert to stock and reset partitions.
Did you have the repartition checked?
Did you try and flash a ROM or Boot loaders?
When you hook the phone to the computer and open up Odin does it still show a yellow box? If so flash back to JFD and start over.
If you tried to flash bootloaders your only hope of unbricking it may be a JTAG service (google it).
It may be late for you now...but a warning to others - Messing with Odin is one of the quickest ways to brick your phone. I dont think Ive ever actually heard of anyone hard brick a T959 without Odin.
Unless your updating the boot loader hard brick is near impossible. Odin is not to blame, and the risk is negligible.
My vibrant died a few days ago reverting to stock to deposit a check (so GPS would work). Sounds like the phone just died. Mine is hardware dead and sounds just like yours. Wont turn on or acknowledge a current when plugged into the charger.
BTW: Unlike some other phones, if you click re-partition on the Vibrant and have the pit file. You can repartition and it not muck up the phone... well unless the repartitioning itself went AWOL.

I agree with ya Moped_Ryder about the quirks of using Odin, although Ive never had a problem with it, as long as I do or don't tick the wrong buttons or try flashing the wrong SW for the wrong application ETC ETC!!
Ironically, a half a day too late, I found out about the dangers and horrors of using the Samsung Kies update, and that was what BRICKED my phone, Its corrupted the primary and 2ndary Boot-loaders, BUT again it wasn't ODIN that did it!! Personally I use CWM to flash anything above stock JFD.
BTW I JUST INSTALLED YOUR ROM GREAT WORK, IVE NEVER SEEN FROYO ACT AND PERFORM SO WELL! WHY WOULD I REVERT BACK TO FROYO, BECAUSE IVE HAD TOO MANY WEIRD PROBLEMS WITH ALL THE ICS's and Froyo cured all the app problems I needed working and plus Ive got the loud ringtone again ETC ETC!! Only thing I miss. Is not being able to use my FFC I modded the phone with. I'm wondering if there is a way to port that part of the needed SW into your Froyo to support FFC's Sometimes Old is better, but to each their own!! Anyway great job, Thanks a ton!!
Unfortunately you have a hard brick. I know, I did the same thing. Fortunately it doesn't mean your phone is toast. Go to mobiletechvideos.com, you need a JTAG service. I also recommend the Unbrickable Mod. They can do that service for you. You can find out more about unbrickable mod, search in xda. Good luck!

Don't necessarily give up.
My phone was doing the same thing after I screwed up a flash. The screen would not light up and there was no indication of the phone powering up at all no matter what I did. Tried all sorts of tricks (researched from XDA) to get into download mode or otherwise get it to at least partially boot, aboslutely nothing worked. Out of desperation, I found a guy within driving distance of me that sold jigs, got one within a couple of hours. Popped the jig into my phone, went right into download mode, flashed stock no problem. Phone has worked fine ever since.
Don't give up. Hopefully the jig will work.
I had a similar issue with my phone after using Odin,it was completely hard bricked. As I am in Europe no possibility for Jtag but I found the Unbrickable Mod by Adam Outler. Using it you really need very good soldering skills. If you're not good with that try to find someone to do it on any electronic repairs or something, that's the way that I did,it will cost you few bucks.

You cannot brick this phone. I thought I bricked mine a couple times and panicked like hell only to have fixed the problem. Odin is reverting back to 2.1 or 2.2 if you mess up. If you are having trouble with Odin, try Heimdall. As far as turning your phone on, take out the battery, put it back in, plug in usb with odin or heimdall running, volume up and down while pressing power button. Hold this until download mode shows up. odin back to stock. After this, try re-flashing the new firmware you tried, but read the developers instructions again before doing so. I hope this helped
Even if you brick the phone hopelessly with a bad bootloader flash, it's not really lost. If you Google something like "Vibrant jtag repair" you'll find that you can get you phone fixed.

Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant T959 totally bricked.

Please Help me out.
I was using CynogenMod7 ROM. Could not write on my external SD card or mount it .
So decided to go back to Stock froyo firmware.
Tried ODIN to flash to my stock froyo firmware.
Had done it many many many a times earlier with success.
But ODIN could'nt complete the process, it kept on getting struck at Kernel and Factory some times.
Later thought there might be something wrong with bootloader.
Downloaded stock froyo bootloader.
Tried to ODIN the bootloader and got Struck at SBL many times ,Kept on trying then got struck at PARAM.
Removed the battery.
From than on NO Response what so ever combination buttons used.
No battery indicators,No light on Home keys, No signs of any power. Nothing Visible on screen & keys.
Tried usb JIG - no response.
Tried Ultimate UnBrick Resurrector-No response.
No lights .
Please solve my problem.
This may not work because I discovered this by accident. I bricked my phone so bad it looked like it wouldn't even turn on too. So, hopefully this works. Make sure you have your samsung drivers installed. Open Odin and connect the USB to the computer but not to the phone. Do a battery pull and do the three button boot, simultaneously connecting the USB to the phone. Most likely, nothing will happen. Hopefully, the phone will connect to Odin. Then, click start. That's right. Don't put any pit or tar files in, just click start. Hopefully, your phone will reboot to the vibrant screen and is stuck there. If it does, now you can reboot to download mode and Odin whatever files you wanted. If it doesn't work, just keep messing with the three button boot. I apologize for wasted time if it doesn't work. These steps are what I personally did on my phone. Hopefully, it works for you.
Sorry to say but I believe you have hard bricked your phone. If installing bootloaders goes wrong then your phone can turn into a paper weight. You could maybe try a jtag repair but I'm not sure it would help. You could call samsung and ask for a replacement, tell them you updated with kies or something but that's not exactly the truth

OK first, the stock images are 2.1 eclair not 2.2 froyo. Are you sure you have the right files? Are you sure your phone is a t959(3g, no front camera)and not t959v(4g, has front camera). Second, it sounds like a hard brick, if all else fails go to www.mobiletechvideos.com and check out the unbrickable mod and JTAG repair.
If you get your phone in DL mode and you have the correct Odin images, check the repartition box as well as others and run it.
Good luck

Remove battery and sim and microsd. Leave out and press and hold power for 30 seconds or so. Leave battery out for a few minutes.
Put battery in and if you are on GB bootloader hold volume up and plug in USB. Might get you to download mode.
I did that with a friends phone about a year ago and got lucky. Odin recognized it. I read that somewhere here on XDA. May be a shot in the dark... but when you get desperate any new ideas to try can be a relief right?
Good luck to you.
After I messed with bootloaders and then tried to get back to stock with Kies I had this problem.

I called Samsung and told them that I was just trying to upgrade to 2.2 with their software and they replaced my PCB (printed circuit board) for no cost (including shipping). I have no idea if they tried to figure out if I had really used Kies (if they could even figure it out with the state my phone was in) or if they just replaced the PCB blindly. Worth a shot, I'd say!
Thanks for your concern.

When you pulled the battery, after it hung up with Odin, you corrupted the primary Bootloader, because it wasn't completely written in......Last weak possible option is to try every rocker/battery/cable sequence ETC, to get Odin to handshake with the phone!!.....If there's still no sign of life after doing that....Your only option will be to have it JTAG,d in order to rewrite the primary bootloader file back in it.....it'll never power on unless the primary bootloader executes properly!!....you can corrupt the 2ndary BL and the phone will only be soft bricked, but a primary BL corruption is phone DEATH!!....Only place I know of that's reliable is: mobiletechvideos.com....send it to them, they'll rewrite the primary BL back in it and I think 2.1 or 2.2 for you and mail the phone back to you!!....Good luck let us know if you got it powered on with any combination, as that could save another Bricker from having to send it out!!

Possibly bricked phone

Hi!
I just had the weirdest experience with my sgsii
I have been using the unofficial vsync patched cm10 rom for this modelfor the last month or so.
I have been updating at least one per week but this week I decided to give my phone a break and not flash it... i am actually really busy at job.
Suddenly tonight, the phone looked like when you have a SOD... so i just pulled the battery.
Now, it does not pass from the first logo stage, just prior to start booting.
I cannot access cwm recovery either, but download mode seems to work-
Now the odd thng is that i am attempting to flash somethng to get the phone working but it gets stuck in the step "NAND Write start!".... it goes no furter than that...
I have chosen the options auto reboot and f.reset time.
a pda file, phone and csc file from the eaked jb rom.....
The system I am attempting to flash from is a windows 7 pro 64 bit.... and odin is Odin3 v1.85...
Please, tell me i didnt get a brick and there is a way tofix it... :crying:
EDIT: Desperated, i tried to flash latest jb leak again, and chose the pit file that comes with it, which re-partitions the phone...
After 20 minutes not responding, i pulld the battery out... now i cannot even enter download mode....nothing....nada....
Sounds like you bricked it, good job.

too bad never repartition unless you make your own pit file with heimdall .. if you would've wait a couple hours I just pmed you.
and for other people instead of flashing samsung's bricksquadroms you can flash CM9 resurrection edition. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419102
Make a pit file with heimdall of your own device. Don't trust pitfile that comes with a rom.
I re-partitioned my device and i got like 3GB intern memory back.
There's probably a way to get your device alive. it isn't the mmc cap bug so. search some threads on xda about brickbugs etc of galaxy phones and you'll find people who hardbricked and unbricked their device.
Probably usb jig could get you into download mode i'm not sure though. Or else jtag. Ask some people over there they will know it
I will try to revive it with jig.... i must find the thingy though.,..... if not.. i will send it to the service but i'm not sure i'm on warranty....
Being not patient made me f*ck it up bad....
Any clue on how to recover a phone after re-partitioning.... i really don't know where to start...
EDIT: JIG does not switch it on either... why did i have to re-partition?!??!?!?!?!?!
That was a dumb move....... any more ideas?
If you cant enter recovery or download mode you have no choice but to JTAG repair or mobo replacement.
Hard brick.... on its way to service
Wish me luck..
Mobo replacement it is, this incident will at least teach you to be patient, I explained you my problem in PM, I waited for 1 week for USB jig to arrive from eBay then flashed stock ROM. I trust the f/w it came with the most.

Isn't this kind of brick fixable with Jtag?

Ok, before I repartitioned, making the problem worse, I was experiencing some kind of R/W problem..... there was something odd with the nand because I was able to boot in download mode, but not in recovery (CWM) mode....
Then, when I plugged the phone to the computer, Odin was able to recognize the phone.
I followed some thread around XDA to flash 4.1.2 leak from sammy and when I hit the "Start" button in Odin, it would not pass from the first stages, revealing that R/W or I/O problem.... the internal nand was, somehow broken.... it didn't read or write properly.... so, even If i could find a workaround, I would have lost some internal storage (some posts talk about around 3 Gb or something similar as lost space in these cases).... that is IF i had been able to fix it..... but then, that's what warranty is for..... so I gave it a last (dumb) try..... including the pit file, which attempted a format, which ended messing (i would say the f. word) everything up.
The good side is that unable to even boot, at least i lost the blue loading bar the vsync patched cm10 mod has in the first bootup screen.... which could have revealed to sammy that I was tempering with unofficial roms....
Lesson learned: Be patient people: But also, don't think this could not happen to you: The phone was perfectly working the last time I saw it... and I even was making some phone calls and browsing the internet.... I mean... it gave no prior symptoms or warnings... I t just died..... I guess I have to be glad I'm not one of those people whose phone gets caught up on fire on their pockets for malfunctioning.....
Now waiting for it to come back revived from samsung..... I have hope
hope it will be able to recover
Great: After losing the phone and past almost three months, samsung says the phone has been manipulated and the warranty is voided....
I wasn't able to flash back an original firmware prior to sending it to the tech service.....
What do you recommend me to do?
I guess paying for the repair would be quite expensive....

Well what is it you expect us to say, some secret magic word that will fix it for free?
The choice is pay for it to be fixed or dont.
So no magic word or secret passphrase so they will upgrade my device to a SGSIV for free?
Damn.....
I'm asking for advice, since I'm convinced the brick was not caused by flashing anything.....
Does anyone have any experience with this in the past to know more or less how expensive bill could I be facing for the repair?

Dude, it WAS caused by flashing something.
Initially your device wasn't "bricked" and was likely a kernel issue and possibly a dirty usb data connection.
The point when it was bricked was when you tried flashing the pit file, had bad connection and you then pulling battery. This f**ked your nand chip up and only way to fix it is to replace motherboard.
You will need to either purchase a mobo replacement and replace it yourself or pay somebody to purchase/replace it for you. Probably looking at around £100.
When bricks happen, you really need to BRICK it before claiming warranty.
I've got a couple of guys here that own a PhD in bricking.
Brick is the new flash.

Jig wasn't working
Flashing anyting.. even just a recovery wasn't working
FLashing official didnt work
Flashing CM didnt work either
Tested different cables and different ports
It was f*cked up already... anyway: 4 samsung devices owned: 3 gave problems of hardware..... that cannot be a coincidence...
Repartitioning erased my tracks, if anything... because the 3 key combo for recovery was working until then..... but either way they managed to access the memory somehow, I guess.....

Bricked phone! Please help!

Hi.
Please read all of what I tried before suggesting something.
I have a S3 GT-I9300 international version. It's from Orange Israel and its warranty recently ended.
All of what I tried below has been done with the phone in the Download mode by turning it while holding the power, volume down and the home key, there is absolutely nothing else this phone can do, if I just normally power it on it'll get stuck on the Samsung Galaxy S3 screen, I can't even get to the animated Samsung logo. Kies is uninstalled completely and I have no AV.
Now here is what I tried so far:
1. Most forums said that I could try a regular flash via Odin by inserting the firmware.md5 file into the PDA section and flashing it, but that just makes Odin get stuck on the process (Setup Connection...) or give me this error [1st screenshot from the left]
2. I also tried attaching the .pit file for my 16GB S3 named (GT-I9300_mx_20120220.pit) alone but that makes Odin get stuck on this process as well [2nd screenshot from the left]
3. I tried attaching both .md5 and .pit files at the same time but it just also gets stuck on the (Setup Connection...) forever. And when I say stuck I don't mean Odin stops responding, I mean it just hangs on that process.
4. I looked in forums even more and they suggested I try different USB ports or cables and I did, still nothing.
5. I tried different Odin versions for all of the things I already tried.
6. I tried flashing different firmware versions for all of the things I already tried.
7.1. I downloaded Heimdall Suite and I tried to use it since a guy mentioned it helped him immensely by him just installing the drivers using the "zadig.exe" file and choosing his S3 from the All Devices list and installing the driver, however I encounter something different because the program has Replace Driver option that gives me this error [3rd screenshot from the left]
7.2. I later discovered that I can install the driver anyway by clicking the arrow next to the button and choosing Install WCID driver, that worked successfully, however it hasn't solved my problem like the guy on the forum, for him, the S3 started to get recognized by Odin and it flashed his device successfully, for me, it still gave me that error.
8. After I installed the driver from Zadig I launched Heimdall Suite in hopes of finally flashing my device but it gave me this error when trying to load up the .md5.gz [4th screenshot from the left]
9. I then proceeded to add the .pit file I downloaded earlier into the Flash tab in Heimdall tool and adding the boot.img because I think that should be enough to get it going, plus I don't know what else to put. It gave me this error [5th screenshot from the left]
I'll keep updating this post when I try new stuff, however I would like you guys to suggest things I haven't tried before or supply me with files I haven't found already (.pit files, firmwares I'm not aware of, etc.). Would appreciate any little help of sorting this problem out, the warranty ended so I don't know what am I gonna do if I don't get it fixed :/
Thanks.

Yep sounds bricked. If that's the case, send for repair. Your NAND is probably borked.
Out of interest, what does all the info on the screen say in download mode?

PRODUCT NAME: GT-I9300
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: YEes (1 counts)
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
Does that give you any idea of what I should try next?
I really want to put repairing the phone to the absolute last option.
Remove Kies = remove USB drivers Odin may not work .
PIT can kill your phone .
I don't think its SDS more like your flashing PIT has bricked the phone .

The problem with the S3 is that there really aren't many options before the last option. From what I can see, you have already tried them all.
It tells me you haven't got SDS, but we already knew you had a NAND issue, regardless of that. It was just a matter of interest.

I didn't mention that I also tried all of what I tried with Kies installed.
And it is SDS, I was just browsing through photos and the phone just locked up and restarted and couldn't get passed the GALAXY S3 flash screen, which is why I started trying all this crap, including flashing PIT. And the symptoms and behavior of the phone hasn't changed since the first time it restarted on me. So I definitely didn't change ANYTHING to the phone whatsoever.

It could be SDS. We've seen a few failures like this where download mode doesn't show SDS symptoms. It doesn't mean the result is not SDS. Its uncomfirmable.
SDS possible , Nand damaged itself possible but 90% of problems are user error .
That error is often in trying to smash their way out of trouble avoiding the simple correct method and throwing everything at the phone .Following stuff from multiple forums then asking help on XDA at the end when it is to late .
Whatever you have done in the past right or wrong does not matter it is now a service centre job .
Samsung generally offer 24 months limited warranty but would be likely to reject due to custom rom count .
