[Q] best smaller carrier - HTC EVO 3D

I can't find anything on my exact question. I am curios as to which small cell phone provider is the most reliable? Boost, cricket, straight talk? I hear great things about all of them, especially straight talk since they use verizon towers and they are the cheapest. Thanks for everyones help.

They have Verizon prepaids for 50 A MONTH I would lookinto that unlimited everything

I am looking for a service to flash my evo 3d or any other smartphone too. I know with boost, criket, and straight talk you can flash phones over and keep all the goodies and only pay a fraction of the price!

No.4.g is a buzzkill but if your always near WiFi
I.would think cricket or boost since there pretty established compared to when they started
Whoever has the best over 3g would be the best bet I'm.curious to know who is the fastest LOL i wouldn't mind not having 4g without my $99 sprint Bill every Damn month
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App

If you can flash a good phone to straight talk, that would be a good deal, I know someone who has it and they get great 3g, and voice, they just don't have very cool phones.

I have mine on metro in Detroit 3g is bad for metro here. Boost would probably be your best bet as far as 3g as long as your in a good sprint coverage area boost will be good. I know people that average dl at 800kbps and upload around 1k
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App

Yeah I am thinking about boost. I have had sprint for a good while now and have never had any trouble with their coverage at all and the download speeds aren't all that bad. I will be in wi-fi area's 90% of the time. The advantage with boost is that after 18 months your bill can be as low as $40.00 a month and that is cheaper than straight talk even if you buy a full year at once... Although from what I see straight talk has some amazing coverage and download speeds. I guess i'm still stuck between boost and straight talk... I just want to get rid of my $160 dollar bill every month!!!

I only pay 40 a month for metro and have everything just not the greatest speeds here yet. But they are updating evdo coverage in some markets now. But like you while I'm using internet I'm usually by WiFi.

virgin mobile... because they are sprint owned, so you get the same service, just at a cheaper price.

can you flash to virgin mobile?

Just double check with dealer certain carriers don't support full flash and some of those other carriers it might be harder to provision data on your own.

yeah seems like it could be hit or miss. I think Boost is gonna be the way to go from what everyone says. Their coverage looks good and in my area here in Arizona it is significantly better than a lot of other areas (or so it seems) Besides after a little bit of time boost is the cheapest..

Boost is Sprint owned, so you will have the same network speeds of course minus the 4G, And also No roaming on boost, so keep that in mind if you're in areas without Sprint service, travel to areas without Sprint, or like to use verizon prl's.

A tough decision....

Guys I've had my Evo since its release. I love it. Had the hero before it. Loved that. I've had sprint for about 6 years. I love it. Id absolutely love to have the Evolution 3D. I got the money for it. So I was set on getting it. But yesterday I go to a local river...btw I live in san antonio. My bro who has verizon...had good signal on his blackberry. My cousin who has at&t...had good signal on his iphone. Me with my super amazing Evo...had no signal whatsoever. At work I can barely get a signal inside the building also. Like I said I love sprint and my evo. The Evo 3D is by far the phone I want the most. But it seems like people who have at&t and verizon have signal no matter what. I just wanna be able to watch videos and stuff but it seems like with sprint I can't do that. Maybe its just how sprint covers the san antonio area. Can someone help a guy out? What would you guys do if u were me? Its a tough call to make

You can flash a verizon prl to it, I'm currently doing that with my hero and I am getting great signals. You still get 3g but it forces the phone into preferred roaming , so only do that if your plan allows roaming.
Here is a thread with the prl i'm using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1089786
I think it is the latest and it will work on your Evo if you want to test how the signal is.

Well Sprint is still cheaper and if your signal is that bad I think it would be worth investing in. I mean if you really want verizon than go ahead, but I feel that the prl works perfectly and there is no need to make a switch in my opinion,
Well commingle from T-Mobile you will hate Verizon when they throttle you..
I'd say call sprint and tell them you have a network problem with slow speeds.. they will check your coverage
Prolly issue a trouble ticket and then give you a credit or something
Or they may just say f u...
Call before you switch if u do decide to go to Verizon I'm sure sprint will do what they can to keep you as a customer

Oh I forgot to add that you don't loose any features either. I can still use Sprint tv. I have the other sprint apps removed, but I thought it was worth adding. So pretty much you get a big increase in 3g speed with no drawbacks....If only I could add a lte chip to my phone to use 4g...
Hmmm sounds cool to me. Oh yeah and I read on engadget that san antonio is one of the first 6 cities that at&t will deploy their lte network this summer. Their headquarters use to be here before it moved to dallas. So I would expect the signal to be very good in texas

My cousin has AT&T and my other one has Verizon. Verizon hardly ever drops calls (same w/ Sprint). AT&T on the other hand...STAY AWAY FROM THEM!!! They're crazy and lock down their devices more than any other carrier. The amazon Market doesn't even work on the AT&T devices.
IF you switch, go to Verizon, but I still suggest staying with Sprint just because they're the cheapest. Try contacting them and see if you can get some type of discount on your plan for crappy service.
EDIT: Within my 10 mile radius @ my house, I have one dead spot. lol! (Jacksonville Florida)
I know this won't help you when your out and about but..since you are a six year customer if you call Sprint and tell them your signal blows they will probrably give you an airwave device..I got one no prob..and now I have great signal for about 100 yards in any direction from the device..its free u just need cable internet..only drawback is that it blocks other cdma devices besides Sprint from getting signal within range of it..I think you can fix that in most phones roaming settings tho
Yeah at&t is a last resort. I read up more on the verizon prls. I don't really feel comfortable doing that. I would consider calling sprint. But the thing is I get good signal at home. Just not anywhere else...lol. at work it sux...at our other house 45 mind away it sux. Its hard to figure out

Hey, I'm new to Jacksonville. Is it worth getting 4g service here? I want to be able to tether the 4g onto my laptop in my apartment. What do you think of the service in the area?????
sprints network in san antonio is pure **** right now. they gave me a date of 6/17 when they will have the towers fixed in my area, culebra/1604 area. but whether that is true i doubt it since this will be about the 4th date they have given for when the towers will be fixed.

4G is available roughly about 20% of the time near me. It's not @ my house, but it is VERY strong outside my neighborhood. (lol).
When I do have it, I get from 1 mbps to 10 mbps. It's really quick for a phone, especially anything over 2 mbps.
EDIT: You can look up Clear's network coverage and see if you're covered. The map literally shows a dead area about a 20 foot radius around my house. LOL

Sprint Network Speeds

Did anyone see this on bgr?
http://www.bgr.com/2012/04/17/atts-...ound-to-be-nations-fastest-wireless-services/
They basically say Sprint lags behind everyone in 3G and 4G. I personally get really good 3G speeds (>1mbps), and 4G when I can get it but it is not at my house or work. Just in between. Not wanting to be a whiner. I feel like when Sprint rolls out LTE and Network Vision everywhere we'll be back. I'm rather happy with my wireless data, but it seems we are right now missing out on a lot.
My 3g speeds are just pathetic now. They used to be decent, like in the 800 plus range at work. Now I'm lucky if I pull 100kbps. Plus I always drop in and out and even go to roaming sometimes. Please hurry up the roll out sprint.

Sprint DOES lag behind on network speeds. Even with the upgrades they've done in my area. Things have improved, but I don't think they're anything to brag about. Even 4G wimax when I have a strong signal is pitiful. There are times I feel 4G wimax is like AT&T or T-Mobile 3G. I don't complain, really, because it's fast enough for me to get by. But... congrats on taking the red pill and waking up

I kind of feel like this also. In a year or so from now, I expect to have fast LTE and good 3G as a backup. If that is not the case I may go elsewhere. Allthough I hate to lose unlimited data and the other perks of being with sprint.
my 3g and now 4g speeds are pretty pathetic. 3g is 100k most of the time except in the evenings when the towers are so overloaded it drops to 1x or 3g will just timeout on everything and 4g is now down to anywhere between 200k and 500k during the evening and 1.5-2mb during the rest of the time. yet sprint continues to say theres no problems in the area lol.
This is definitely not news. My Sprint service has sucked for a while now.
I'm roaming often, and when I'm not roaming the signal is weak. When I'm lucky enough to get a good signal, 3G is still slower than dial up speeds, and 4G is slower than Verizon's 3G.
Sprint is in real trouble if they don't fix this. The only reason I am still with them is because I really do like my Evo 3D. No other carrier has a comparable phone, and I'm stuck in a contract anyway.
If Verizon got a Samsung Galaxy S 3D, I'd probably break my contract with Sprint to go to Verizon.
Who cares about unlimited data if it's practically unusable in most real world scenarios?
My city isn't even on the list of future LTE markets yet either, so I'm not holding my breath for that. I do have Wimax, but it's pretty crappy.
Sprint has totally fell off. I remember a few years ago when Sprint used to consistently be first or second in these data speed comparisons. Now I would have been shocked if they weren't picked last. And I'm sure most Sprint customers would have also been shocked if Sprint was anything but last in this most recent comparison.
Sprint has got more and more expensive over the years, and the service has got worse and worse. Not a very good outlook for the future at all.
does anybody really think sprint lte will be fast? why do they not assume it will be similar to Wimax speeds?
sprint has 3g but nobody assumes it is as fast as the competition.
rude awakening! you will be unsatisfied with lte speeds and then you will realize that Wimax wasn't the problem, SPRINT is the problem

as soon as there network is upgraded... they will morph right into verizon's evil twin. price, and everything. just watch.
the only thing keeping them from not charging an ass load of money is that they are being outperformed in network capability in a lot of areas. i am fortunate to live in an area with very good 4g and 3g, so i can't complain. but man i sure feel your guys' pain with the slow network ****. that would be frustrating. it's like paying for wifi and your wifi is never working or never running fast.

They already aren't that much cheaper than Verizon anymore. I think last time I checked Sprint was like $5 a month cheaper or something like that. And that wasn't even factoring all the nickel and dime fees Sprint puts on there.
The only thing Sprint has on Verizon these days is unlimited data. The price isn't a big enough difference to really be a factor. And the unlimited data isn't really a factor (to me at least) if it's too slow to use. Sprint's just lucky their network went to **** after they already had me locked into a contract. And even then, I'd have probably left if I could get a phone comparable to the Evo 3D on another network.
Sprint did the same thing that AT&T when they got the iPhone...they didn't anticipate all the traffic on their network thus not preparing for it. I am holding out though. By the end of the year, a lot of us will have a great network to go with the unlimited data. And will be better than all the others.

The problem with these anecdotal tests is they mean very little in your town. When I worked downtown, Sprint was 800kbps. Not blazing, but amazing compared to AT&Ts 20kbps or Verizons 50.
Different side of town? Sprint is 100 and not very useful. And if I drive 3 minutes away I'm getting 1100.
The best thing to do is do a speed test and get people on other carriers to do them right next to you

thats true, if i head to the **** side of town i can get good 3g speeds but no 4g lol. or if im around a sprint store they make sure the towers are working perfect. just some observations ive experienced here in san antonio. hell around my parents house half the time i get network busy when trying to make a call. sprint says theres no problems that the network is working as it should haha. they get all pissed when i ask them so for 200+ a month im not supposed to beable to make a phone call and have data speeds that are so ****ty it basically turns my phone into a cool looking paper weight.

I'm lucky if I get 300kbps in my home area. Luckily, I found out they took down the closest tower in light of the fact of upgrading the others to network vision and haven't yet...so I complained. Until then...it's non-stop bill credits. I'm making them pay for the lack of service. I ask what I get over someone with a $50/mon prepay plan other than the fancy phone I bought...the answer? Nadda.
Pisses me off that we'll have to get new phones again to take advantage of the 4G LTE. Thanks a lot.

Need Input: Possibly Switching To Sprint

Hi, I have a couple questions. I currently am with US Cellular with an Electrify. I was thinking of switching to Sprint, but was wondering how cell service is, Internet Speed, just overall view and experience with Sprint. Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks
Service is damn good. Internet speed where i live, not so much. Im lucky to get over 200kbs on 3g but i mean, everything loads just fine. The only time you notice is when you are literally downloading something. Other than that, ive been with sprint for 6 years now and im satisfied. Ive never had any real issues. Having never had us cellular though im not sure how to compare the two.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA
Talk to people in your area and see what their service and speeds are like. In my area I'm averaging 170kbps on 3G for the past year. This is slower than what I got ten years ago on Sprint using a flip phone and 230k hack. Other than that, voice service is good.
The only reason I'm still on Sprint is cost vs data usage. If a GSM carrier offered the same amount of data at the same cost I'd drop Sprint in a heartbeat.

I have been with sprint for a year now n never had any problems. I love the photon. In my area(Kansas city) I get around 2mbps on 3g, never used my phone on 4g yet so not sure boot those speeds. I don't get 4g at my house. But I would definitely recommend joining sprint. I love the unlimited data on my rooted photon. I use close to 60gb of data per month. U can't do that with anyother company.
Like mention before check for feedback with people in your area, Im also one of the unlucky ones to get bad 3g about 180kps when Im lucky. However I talked on the phone for hours with sprint yesterday and I can tell you theyre great at customer service and one of the guys that I spoke to confimed that sprint is updating alot of their towers across the US including many around my area. Hopefully yours is already good.

I have been with Sprint for over 10 years now, while I am satisfied with the service in general, I wouldn't I say I am happy.
The reason is, their prices....yes their prices. They charge $70 a month for unlimited everything. Fine! It is a great deal compared to the other carriers.
However, their speeds suck, really suck. Some users are lucky enough to be near a good coverage site, but I regularly get between 50Kbps & 250Kbps.
Plus they have the BS $10 charge for Premium Data....what Premium Data? Heck, I can't even get normal data where I live & work. I get stuck sending messages using GVoice, market won't open up. If I switch to WiFi everything will work just fine.
Anyway, the reason I stuck with Sprint was they offered me a huge monthly discount on my bill to move to a smartphone (in Dec. 2010). Plus, their LTE network should be up in 2013 and they are decommissioning their IDEN network and re-purposing the spectrum for LTE (or so I've read).
Their unlimited everything plan is great for people who really use a lot of data and have good coverage. For people like me, who barely use 200MB/month its a waste, if I leave data sync on 24/7 I might push 750MB....that's it. If they had tiered data plans, I would switch to that in an instant.
In any case, if you are happy at US Cellular, there is no need to switch. Wait and see how all of this plays out.
Also, call them and ask for incentives to switch over to them. First month free, 20%-25% off etc. You may not get it the first time but call every few weeks and see if you get lucky, especially near the end of the year.
Good Luck!
I get about 2mbits down and 1 up. Best network speeds around my area. Uscc is just a tiny bit slower than that in the same area.

I have been with sprint for at least 6 years, maybe more. Don't really remember when I first signed up with them. I have not really had much problems with them. Their customer service has only gotten better since I first signed up, however I liked their old phone upgrade plan better than this new one.
I don't get 4g at my house, but that doesn't bother me much because 3g works pretty well, and I almost always have wifi available.

Wow...clear deal would put Sprint ahead of AT&T and VRZ combined...

http://qz.com/#37276/meet-the-private-equity-firm-that-dominates-the-us-gun-industry/
"With an acquisition, Sprint would own a mind-boggling 184 MHz of spectrum, which is more than AT&T (77MHz) and Verizon (83MHz) combined. More spectrum means more bandwidth, and more bandwidth ultimately could ultimately mean faster wireless speeds for Sprint’s mobile customers. It’s as if Sprint is about to have a highway with twice as many lanes on it than either AT&T or Verizon. (That said, both AT&T and Verizon currently have about twice as many subscribers as Sprint’s 50 million.) The acquisition of Clearwire by Sprint may be the primary reason that Japan telco Softbank invested in Sprint in October"

Agreed, Sprint is the last real chance of any of us have to stand up to price fixing on wireless.
Sprint is going through some growing pains, but better days are ahead.
It's things like this that make me happy I'm sticking around through it all with Sprint. However, I'm still a little pissed that I'm in the middle of downtown Orlando this morning and can only pull a .06mbps speed.
Link is not what you wanted, I believe...

I believe this is the correct URL:

Just pulled the same, .05 in Oklahoma city....I'm so tired of poor unusable data speeds. I don't know if I can wait for a usable sprint. $170 a month for me to use my WiFi has gotten really old come bill time.

I'm so glad I've stuck with Sprint, going to be interesting to see how things are in three years.

Just buy a jetpack from Verizon off contract and go month to month until sprint gets their act together...works pretty good.

sprint saying all these changes just to keep their customers, i hate sprint. Wheres my LTE!!
I'd be pretty happy with a consistent good 3g....
I burn through a minimum of 5-7 gbs a month and have good enough 3g signal to watch Netflix at work and download apps and browse the internet at home. LTE and fast 3g are useless if you max out your data plan in a week... Plus Sprint customer service has been excellent and the phones are great (Evo>One X any day).

I used my data almost exactly the same way but I go through about 8-10 a month. In East/North bay Cali 3g/4g data has been pretty good. No way I can use up that much data with Verizon/ATT without paying more than what I'm paying now.
Locking this as there is already a thread on the clear deal...
FWIW many of the articles are really wrong with comments saying X spectrum sprint will have puts them ahead of the others....must remember all spectrum isn't equal and also some points being left out are one that all that spectrum isn't owned even, as some of it is leased.
Another is that no one is bringing up the point that no one has been trying to buy clearwire for years or their spectrum...except sprint...

Switching to Sprint

Hey everyone,
Been in XDA Dev for almost 10 years and after 10 years of being a Verizon customer, I'm thinking of switching to Sprint and getting the Galaxy S5. I just can't afford having to pay alot for so little minutes and data anymore. I'm also over Verizon locking their phones' bootloader. Dealt with it too long. I am thinking of getting the MyWay plan with unlimited data. Question is, does Sprint throttle the data and after how many GB? I'm not the type of person that abuses unlimited things and I have managed to not go over 400 anytime minutes and 5gb of data while a Verizon customer for years, never went over. But now I'd like to have a little bit of freedom and know that I can stream some music for a little bit and also not have to worry about going over my minutes especially when doing job interviews.
I live in Los Angeles, California so Cali Sprint customers, how is your coverage? Are you satisfied with your Sprint service?
The throttling can occur ammeter 5gbs in congested markets during congested/peak times.

Coverage over Los Angeles metro area had been improving over the last 3 years. I've especially noticed when on the highways. And LTE has been deployed to a lot of places.

You can use the sensorly app to check out user submitted reception and speed tests.

Thanks. How about data speed in LTE. I know it's not like Verizon but is it bearable? My coworkers seem to be exaggerating stating that it's really bad, even worse when they can only get 3g (which is a known fact).

I have used Sprint LTE in a few major markets, NYC mostly, but also Chicago and north NJ. In general, where you have LTE, it is bearable. I have seen speeds of around 30 Mbps, but on average, I get between 5 and 10, mostly on the lower side. Now, Chicago has pretty good LTE coverage throughout, but NYC LTE coverage is very poor, as is north NJ. The only reason to go with Sprint, is if you want unlimited data. But you are getting the absolute worst service, when compared to AT&T and Verizon. Of course it is based on location. Go to sensorly.com and check out your local coverage maps between carriers.
If you know that Sprint has good coverage in your area, check out Ting.com. It is a MNVO that uses Sprint towers, but it costs a lot less, because you only pay for what you use.
Have a look at their site for the possible savings...

Thank you guys, I will check your suggestions out.
In LA the LTE coverage ovall is pretty good. And the LTE speeds do average about 2-12mbps.

Yes, I am aware it says for the top 5%, but surely that is different than not doing it at all.
But switching TO Sprint?? That's rare... lol I understand the locked bootloader stuff, but why not look into something that doesn't suck on the GSM side? You live in a major metro area so T-mobile should work fairly well, or check out AIO Wireless (owned by ATT and soon to be re-branded Cricket) who for $60 / month gets you unlimited everything with the first 5 GBs being LTE service (throttled to 8 MB/s but have never felt it slow and never had issues streaming or downloading anything either tethering or on the phone because it is consistent) and you can bring your own phone so you don't have to get roped into a contract, payment plan, nor worry about specially locked devices. You can even buy additional GBs of LTE for $10 if needed. Just throwing it out there.
