Okay. Couple days ago, i got my new Samsung Galaxy S II. Fell in love with it. I previously had a Vibrant, but that met an unfortunate and violent demise. On the vibrant I hadn't been doing anything involving roms and such because i'd tried once, and completely fried the phone. LOL.
I managed to root my phone, and from what I've read, I didn't do the best method. What I did was get an unsecure kernel, and flashed that, then used a 1-click root type thing to root it. So one of my questions is, my clockwork mod isn't working, what's wrong with it? I downloaded ROM Manager, and flashed CWM. But when i reboot into recovery, i get the stock Samsung recovery screen. How can I get this to work?
And another question, is about roms such as Cyanogen mod. I really wanna get it. (I wont until I get CWM working, though.) And I'm just wondering. If I were to just go to ROM Manager, and flash cyanogen, would it work, or do i need to do more to my phone to be able to put on custom roms? I've never understood the concept of roms vs kernels vs firmware vs whatever else.
And if it matters, Samsung Galaxy S II, Android 2.3.3, rooted using SuperOneClick.
P.S Anything else that I should considering doing/putting onto my phone? And thanks in advance for halping.

Okay, don't take this the wrong way, but it seems you're a bit lacking regarding knowledge about this phone... It'd pay to do your research beforehand in the SGS2 forum, read the FAQs, etc.
Okay, first off, all I can say is, go back to stock. Go flash a stock Samsung ROM for the device. Then, go into Chainfire's CF-Root Kernel thread, and download the appropriate kernel, and flash it using ODIN. After you've done that, you'll have ClockworkMod, and you'll be rooted. It is recommended that you flash another kernel though, after gaining root, as all the CF-Root kernel does it install ClockworkMod, and root the device. Personally, I recommend SiyahKernel.
If you need more detail or have any more questions, feel free to send me a PM.
Thanks,

Alright, I did what you said. I went to stock 2.3.4, used CF-root. And now about SiyahKernel, what are the advantages of it? And is there something wrong with just staying with the CF-Root kernel?
And as of where I am now, with just root and CWM, would i be able to switch ROMs and such?

With a rooted device you'll be able to flash trough Odin or CMW recovery any rom you like.
Siyah kernel gives you a faster and more battery efficient phone and lets you set your own Voltage/ speed the processor has to use see this for the latest info

SiyahKernel has a lot of advantages and improvements of CF-Root, which provides null, if I'm correct. Go check out the SiyahKernel thread in Original Development for details.
Yes, as stated, you can use CWM by itself to switch ROMs. Just remember that if you're switching ROMs (as opposed to performing a flash to a newer version of the same ROM), to perform a factor reset / wipe data, wipe cache, and wipe Dalvik cache (Advanced > wipe Dalvik cache) in ClockworkMod first.

For a beginninger, I can't recommend MIUI highly enough. You could go with GalnetMIUI, which is a variant, but I personally prefer the official MIUI build. If you're looking for a more, 'pure' experience, go with CyanogenMod 7.1 stable.

Alright, one more question, sorry for the nooby-ness. Haha.
So going from my phone to for example Cyanogen, I'd backup in CWM, and Titanium backup (Or does CWM backup like, EVERYTHING?) and then factory reset, flash the rom using odin, and then use titanium backup to get my apps and settings back? orwhat.

CWM backup (called a NANDroid backup), backs up everything. If you perform a NANDroid back, there's no need to perform a backup in Titanium Backup - it creates a full image of your system (the advantage to TB though, is that you can backup all your download apps and settings, then install the new ROM, and restore the backed up apps - If you restore a NANDdroid backup, it'll restore the old ROM, exactly as it was when the backup was made).
So yes, the installation process is, for CWM: copy the ROM.zip to your phone, then boot into CWM recovery. Hit the 'factory reset / wipe data' option, the 'wipe cache' option, and then go to Advanced, and hit the 'wipe Dalvik cache' option. After that, choose 'install ZIP from SDCARD', and choose your ROM.zip. After it finishes installing, just hit 'reboot system now', and you're good to go!
Usually, it's not required to use ODIN to flash a new ROM, unless there's a problem with the recovery.
All that said, it pays to read the thread for the ROM beforehand, as sometimes when moving from ROM to ROM (especially from stock), there's a few small things that may be required, like flashing the ROM twice, or whatever

And I've asked too many questions for one person in one thread, I happen to have one more. How can I get the Android Market on Cyanogenmod? I downloaded build 115, and there wasn't a market, so i'll be using MIUI till I get that fixed. ><

You're more than welcome
If you've got any other questions, feel free to PM me
With CyanogenMod, there's a bit of a story to it, but basically, they're not allowed to package Market, Gmail, Maps, etc. with the ROM, so you need to download a zip file called Gapps and flash it in CWM Recovery, you can find it here. You don't need to wipe anything when flashing this.
Also, build #115 isn't the latest, build #117 is (in fact, there's another, even more current one, but there's really nothing to it), but I don't believe there's any major changes.

Hey, I was having troubles messaging you, since it didn't show anything in the sent box, i assumed it didnt go through. So i guess ill be still asking you on here.
So about Cyanogen, which build is the best? And if i'm going from one build to another, like from 115, to 116, would i still have to do a complete wipe? And any other roms besides MIUI and Cyanogen you recommend? cause MIUI is giving me and couldn't generate md5 errors, and i cant restore to it, and i hate starting off without it set up how i like it. D: and yeah, thanks.

I only just the message 12 hours ago, if that helps?
Usually, your best bet is to go with the latest build, which you can get here. If it's stability you're looking for, go with the stable build, instead of nightlies.
Personally, out of all ROMs I've tried, I could only ever stand MIUI and CyanogenMod - but even then, MIUI started to annoy me with little things here and there. I think I'll be sticking with CyanogenMod for awhile. So, I'm not really the best authority on that. Just try some different ones, and see what appeals to you the most
Hey guys I believe I rooted correctly, got clockwork installed anddid a back up. I have 1.5 and followed instructions with htcdev and did all that, installed the zip and said successful. Tried to install muiu I think? And another rom, whichever was the first one under cdma section, the top one. I think warm? It just sits at the white HTC screen, while the muiu? One goes to HTC screen then goes black. I restored my original one now. Did I miss something?
All I really want is the WiFi tether to work so I can use the net from my 3ds 4G on my new tablet.
Thanks all.
Edit : I do see the superuser app in my program list.
For any rom with a custom kernel you have to follow the specific instructions for hboot 1.5. That is probably why those roms didn't work for you. If you were able to install a custom recovery and install a zip through it then you definitely are rooted successfully.
To tether just get wifi tether from here: https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Once you have that installed I think you need to force MMS clamp and set the device to be Evo 3D
just use pdanet, root not needed that im aware of.not currently useing it but worked well for me when i did and 4g works with it also

I installed "Flash image GUI" Which was supposed to install the kernel, it asked me if i was sure if i had NAND memory unlocked. If I am able to backup my system with clockwork, install another rom, but it doesnt work, then go back to my original, does that mean NAND is NOT unlocked because it was not able to install the kernel properly? If so how do I unlock the NAND memory also?

Well doing this via Flash image GUI seems to have ****ed my phone. I cant even use my backup file now to restore for some reason.
... Anyone have a stock rom I can try to throw on there to recover it?
Do all these
Wipe Data/ Factory reset
WIPE DALVIC Cache
WIPE CACHE
then restore you backup you should do those 3 things in between flashing any rom or restoring

Sadly I have done this about 10 times and never get past the white HTC screen.
So I'm on cm7, and noticed that my build is 4.5.1 198_6 instead of 198_7. If I'm not going to be running a stock ROM anytime soon, is there a reason to sbf to 198_7? I have the latest radio according to Lokifish's Photon Compendium.
If I should update, what's the safest way to do so? My partitions are updated to ext4 I believe, and I get the debug screen instead of the red Motorola label.

I dunno, what were you on prior to CM7 and did you make a backup of that? Then you could restore back to that and SBF if you want...I dunno, but that seems reasonable to me.
So I watched QBking's video on upgrading your photon system version - and he says NOT to SBF if you have an unlocked bootloader. If I'm -not- on a stock rom, and don't plan to be, and have the latest PRL, webtop, and radio version (198_6), do I need to bother updating at all?
If I -should- upgrade, what should I do? Will I need to relock, SBF to 197_6, then unlock again?

I think might have mis read your original post there. If you don't plan on going back to stock at all, forget it about it updating the phone, once you flash that custom ROM it'll mess with all that stuff. so enjoy cm7! I remember with the constant updates back in September, I was on Alien Rom and had to flash back to stock to receive updates, but once that went through, couldn't go back to Alien ROM because it was based off of old builds.
Well in that case, I'll leave well enough alone for now.
Just to satisfy my curiosity though, if I -did- want to go from CM7, 198_6 to SkinnyJoker (198_7), what would I need to do?
Can I just flash Skinny? Is there something more complicated I need to do?

Skinny roms are great...if you want to go back..
- charge your phone all the way
- back up apps with Ti
- nandroid back up
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache for good measure
- reboot into rsd
- flash 154-5 sbf
- flash 198-7 sbf
- flash derpunlock.sbf
- moto-fastboot install cwm
- reboot into cwm
- wipe caches
- flash skinny rom
- reboot
- reboot
- root and get superuser
- get ti and restore apps only
- calibrate battery
- enjoy and take a breather

This is the way I would do it to ensure a clean install...its a long process and I think you could essentially just factory reset/wipe data/cache and flash skinny but I like to start with a clean slate and do it properly to make sure everything is there.

What I am doing is downloading either of the Zips and installing the latest gapps. You should go to the ROM thread for better support on this ROM by the pershoot himself or other users of this ROM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1787399
Installations of all ROMs are generally the same. Make sure you have CWM and I believe you need a minimum of 5.5.0.4 to flash these ROMs. After that it is as easy as booting to CWM and picking the Zips.
Hope this helps.
The ROM size is small because GApps isn't included. That adds roughly 90MB to the overall size.
Not sure about 3G...I have a WiFi tablet but there should be plenty of info in the OP and responses to answer that q for you.
On top of a full wipe, consider backing up apps so you can restore them after you're done.
If you do a full wipe from recovery you shouldn't have a problem installing any custom ROM from my experience.
You can always flash back to stock if you're not happy. Just remember that you're doing a complete wipe of everything including recovery when you flash stock firmware. You'll have to start over with flashing recovery/rooting/etc if you intend to do custom stuff again later on.
And finally...if you're rooted, your warranty is already void. Flashing back to stock and then putting back stock recovery gets you back to factory fresh with the exception of the binary counter, to my understanding. I have no idea if you can fix that off the top of my head and am not worried about it much myself at this point...browse around and see what you can find on the subject, especially if you have to return the tab for servicing etc.
Hope this helps!

1) you should take the 20120816
2) 3g is working fine
3) first: make a nandroid backup via cwm. 2nd: factory reset (wipe data/cache) and wiping dalvik
4) install the cwm found on droidbasement (from where you get the rom) via Odin - the you can flash this rom
5) yes you can
6) if you brick your tab and will be able to flash back to stock, you might get warranty. If you can't go back, you might get no warranty.
I'm you sing the 20120816 on my gt-p7501 (nearly same specs as 7500). everything works fine. only front camera doesn't work.
In the past I had send my tab to my local service center because of a defect with the display. Before I had flashed back to stock, and I had no problems with the warranty.

Hello Everyone,
Ok so not sure where to start, umm yesterday i decided to root my phone i have the HTC Desire C from Cricket wireless. I was successful at unlocking my bootloader and rooting the device. Now for some reason im unable to flash a custom rom or whatever to my device, not sure if im doing something wrong, but i must have screwed something up because i cant even perform a factory reset or a hard reset to the device at all, and the google play store no longer works and the sync icon never goes away. Now when i attempt to flash the custom rom the clockwork recovery tool wont allow me to do a full wipe which i believe must be completed before you can even install the roms.
any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You.
Just unlocking and rooting the device should not affect how the Play Store works at all. That seems odd. What's the error? By the Clockwork recovery tool, are you referring to the Rom Manager or the actual ClockWorkMod recovery?

Actually you know what, I think i know what happened. when i was trying to flash the rom i also flashed the gapps for jelly bean into my phone which is running ice cream sandwich currently because the rom flashing failed. So basically i think the gapps apps are conflicting with the stock apps on the phone ? It seems like all the google apps are the only ones messing up and the google account sync is messing up also the google playstore and google plus crashes a lot so its only the google apps. so what do you think and how do i restore the phone ? I didnt make a back up recovery either. If someone could also just walk me through how to flash a custom rom like CyanogenMod i believe everything will probably fix its self (hopefully). oh and as for the Clockworkmod i think its the actual clockworkmod recovery the one with a black hat, i accessed it through bootloader recovery options, anyway it doesnt allow me to flash any custom roms ive tried like 3 so far and everytime it ask me for some update file or something about a update not sure.
Yep, the other Google apps is what did it. You don't need to flash Gapps on a stock rom, only for ones like CM that don't come pre-installed. Well, first off, it's good to take note of what system version and baseband version you have, in case you need to find the files for later to reflash. As far as CM, well, you might want to check on how stable a version is for your phone. Often times less popular HTC CDMA phones don't have as good of support from CM. If you just find another stock rom and install it through CWM, you'll probably be fine. Just make sure to wipe everything suggested in the install guide for the rom you pick. Some devs and roms require a full wipe including /system and some do not. ProTip : Do a backup in CWM before ever wiping /system, even your system now which doesn't work right, because if you wipe the system and the rom you downloaded doesn't work, then you will be stuck with nothing to do and at that point would need to find the RUU from HTC to restore the phone back to stock.
FYI: If you unlocked via htcdev.com, this is not a full unlock and whenever you install a custom rom that has a different kernel than what is already on the phone, then you need to extract the boot.img from the rom.zip and install it via fastboot. You should get familiar with fastboot as it is very handy for reviving the phone in a worst case scenario.

Ok Thanks for the reply, now as for the full wipe my CWM wont allow me to do this im only allowed to do a cache wipe and I believe this is why im unable to get a Rom working on my phone and this is getting very frustrating, the CWM is the latest version and TWRT wont even flash to my phone so that one doesnt work at all if you know of any others please let me know. Yesterday morning i soft bricked my phone and none of the roms are working because i believe i must perform a full wipe which i am unable to do at this time. oh and about unlocking my bootloader via htcdev.com and it not being a full unlock, do you suggest that may have something to do with the fact roms wont work on my phone and how do you do a full unlock ? oh and i tried to restore back to stock also thats not working either, I get a status 7 error when installing the roms and sometimes a status 6.

Are you sure you don't have the recovery from another version of the Desire C - GSM maybe? I still don't understand what you mean when you say you can factory reset. Why not? What is the error? And sounds like at this point you should just use the RUU to return to full stock and start over.

Ok not sure what the RUU is and how im suppose to use it to return to full stock, and correct i cant perform a factory reset in bootloader period, when i select factory reset it does nothing but reboot and say HTC "this build is for development purposes only do not distribute outside of htc without written permission. Failure to comply may lead to legal action." then it stays like that and nothing else happens period, not sure what im doing wrong but no worries im going to buy a new phone tomorrow and never use custom roms again, if i want a upgrade ill just go out and buy a new phone which i should have done in the first place, only thing ill be doing is rooting my devices for now on and nothing more thank you for your help.
Well, once you have a custom recovery, you don't factory reset from the bootloader screen, but via the recovery itself. That's one of the main reasons for the recovery - better options to wipe the phone as well as backing up, restoring, and flashing the custom stuff. Not saying you shouldn't buy another phone, but no reason to give up on this one. I just think it would require a bit more reading since you don't see very familiar with what to do with CWM after you installed it. Have you even booted INTO CWM?
