Referencing: 1.4.1 root w/ SD Card - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

1st let me apologize if this is the wrong sections/forums as this is my first post to XDA. My question is about the "Unknown Sources" button on the Nook Tablet. After performing this root and getting the other Rom/OS working and getting the Android market working. I have tried to sideload a few other apk's and keep getting the Android market only warning and I must enable "Unknown Sources". When I check the "Unknown Sources" box it never seems to take after I back out to do what I need to. Any ideas as to what im doing wrong? Again thanks for the help in advance.

I get this as well. Because of this I can not install homecatcher.

I am having this issue as well. I saw a note on the 1.4.1 SD card root thread suggesting that the hidden settings app could be installed using the adb (android development bridge.) I am going to try that when I get home later today.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1473973

That worked great. Just FYI both apps are pay to use now, but the worked perfectly.

does NT support normal apk?

heard that NT may have BL lock, it really is a bad news.
i'm wondering whether NT support normal apk downloaded from other places?
like installing with other markets and use these markets to install apks?
and could someone tell me the influence if we can't crack this lock?
can we reformat the partitions?can we root the device?
thank you!
Check some of the other threads. Much progress has been made, and its very easy to side load apks.
While no one has rooted it yet, it's still very early. Give it time.

yeah, i saw many guys said they sideload the apps, but i don't understand what is sideload
Sideload = loading apk onto an sd card. You can then put sd card into NT and install app that way.
You will need to first enable apps for unknown sources, you can find how to do this in a number of threads.

Sideloading is the installation of an app from a non-approved source. This can involve installing via downloaded or transferred APKs, installing from a sd card, pushing via ADB, etc.
i got it, this means if i have 3rd party market or apk files, i can install applications in NT

As a rule, it appears that you can install most apps by sideloading. This post gives the basics. Read the whole thread and follow it. If you have any questions, just ask them (search first). The XDA community is the kindest that I know of on the internet, people want to help you.
Hope this question is in the right place.
After downloading ANY apk., after clicking on it, a window pops up that reads:
Install Blocked: For security your phone is set to block installation of applications not obtained from Android Market
Below that is "OK" as my only option.
I've visited and revisited the recent rooting threads and other similar sources and found that most if not all arrive at a different option that offers "Settings" that can be changed. Even when I go directly to Settings>Device Settings, I have NO options to alter and allow "Unknown Sources"
Device: 1st Nook - purchased Nov 2011/ firmware 1.2
2nd Nook - purchased approx April 2011/ firmware 1.3
Both units respond the same way. What are my options here. Thanks for any and all help.

You need to allow installation of non-market applications first. To get to that menu, you can use tgps launcher.

The second download link in the root thread is for the tgps _launcher.apk
Open it and you can change the settings there.
This is also where you click development and turn on the two USB debugging boxes and uncheck automount
most problems can be solved by doing a factory restore and try the rooting process step by step with the video without doing anything else.
Factory restore can be achieved by turning off device, and then hold both the N and the power button for 6 -10 seconds while turning on the tablet.
I used the second download link.. It downloaded TGPS.... Are there two TGPS download links?

Hello all, I am having trouble rooting my NT. I've rooted it before only once but I found out I was missing something so I decided to un-root by using Indirect's One click unroot. It completed, but I have been having trouble getting Nook&Zergy to run. It detects my NT as a device with a string of letters/numbers, but when I enter "y" for yes, it just prints some stuff out and automatically exits. Any ideas? I just got mine today and was so pumped, but this is really starting to get to me T_T...

Great news sideloading with 1.4.1 solved!!!

The folks at liliputing have just published a fix for the 1.4.1 upgrade that will allow normal sideloading just as was possible with 1.4.0. All that is necessary is that you must have enabled sideloading when you had 1.4.
ROOTING IS NOT NECESSARY!!!
Here is the link to enable 3rd party apps in 1.4.1
http://liliputing.com/2011/12/sideload-apps-on-a-nook-tablet-with-os-1-4-1-no-root-required.html
Here is the link to enabling 3rd party downloads in 1.4.0 if you don't have it

Now quit yer bellyaching and get to work. Merry Christmas
Special shout out to Indirect for pointing the way to this simple work around for the rest of us.

Forgive me if I misunderstand. But that means it's still NOT possible to do it once you have 1.4.1? I'm worried because I'll be opening one tomorrow and don't know if I should even turn it on until I'm ready to root it.

Don't worry. I turned mine on for the first time yesterday. Registered and downloaded the tgps apk and did some surfing around for about 30 minutes before turning wiring off without it download the update. I was able to do a successful root and launcher install following Indirect's thread. You'll be fine as long as you can follow simple instructions.
they show you how to do it using ADB, honestly this is not easy for the average user and very inconvenient. It is easier to follow a video on reverting back to 1.4.0 and block OTA IMHO...
To give credit where it's due, the tutorials on Liliputing are based on information (and tools) gathered from Indirect and AdamOutler at xda-developers.
I just tried to flesh things out with a slightly more detailed walkthrough and photos.

Has anyone actually USED this with ADB???
I mean, you need to have USB debugging enabled in the NT after the upgrade, and I think the upgrade resets it. It certainly is now reset in my NT, and I'm fairly sure I had it enabled before the 1.4.1 upgrade.
On the Acer A500 section of this site, someone has posted a trick to gain root if:
You have root and apply the trick.
You update to a new version that removes root.
You can then access the device via ADB.
If there's a way to turn on USB debugging in 1.4.1 (I still have command-line access via ConnectBot, just not root access), that would be nice. Or, if someone knows a non-root app that can do it, I will:
Revert to 1.4.0.
Root it.
Install the trick.
Upgrade to 1.4.1.
Enable USB debugging.
Use the trick to regain root access.

You can use NT Hidden Settings but naturally it has to be installed before the update.
I played around with 1.4.1 before reverting and adb install works. Root is the real kicker for me though because I use the host file for ad blocking and I use button savior. Both require root.

With what? Are you getting this with the rooting tools? If so, have you been able to reenable USB debugging? Because without that, the rooting tools won't work.
no, i haven't rooted mine, but i read this script works for the unrooted tab. was i mistaken?
Device Not Found Error
I was able to sideload 5 apps using the Indirect instructions. Then, I needed about two more apps and that's when I received the device not found error message when trying to sideload Launcher Pro.
I have the install third party box checked and both USB debugging boxes and nothing in the auto mount. Although, I tried it with both USB boxes checked and the auto mount checked still the same error.
I even started from scratch in DOS and got the same error.
Any suggestions?

Ok, after writing the first post, I went back to my NT and unchecked and re-checked the third party box. Then went to the Development area and unchecked the second USB debugging box and left the auto mount box unchecked.
I then went to the first USB debugging box and unchecked and re-checked the box. Then went back to DOS to load my last two apps and it worked!

Hm... I'm confused. What script, and where exactly are you getting the "Device not found" message from? On the Tablet? On the PC? What exactly are you doing that triggers the message? (i.e. "I click on the download status notification, and click the .apk that I downloaded and it pulls up a dialog that says, "OH NOES! I HATESES YOU! Device not found." ... text invented for humorous intent.)
nevermind, got it! i didn't have the right ADB drivers installed. i just followed this thread post:

This usually means that there is a missing .so file somewhere. Not sure why you would be getting it, and of course, there is no message about _WHICH_ shared library is missing.

Full details on the Nook Tablet in a few hours. I lost the "n" button after reverting to 1.4.0 via Adam's method, and need to retry the whole sequence again after going to a virgin B&N 1.4.0 state. If that works (ie, the "n" button works), I will publish details, but the above is correct.

[Q] NT 8GB 1.4.2 downgrade to 1.4.0 possible?

Title says it all. Is there a way to downgrade a Nook Tablet from 1.4.2 to 1.4.0?
I have successfully rooted it, yet I am unable to get the "home catcher apk" installed since I can't get the "Unknown Sources" (Allow installation of non-Market applications) to stick.
Thank you in advance!
I haven't seen a way to get it to 1.4.0. Do not flash the 1.4.0. acclaim update though it will brick the device.
Any ideas on getting "Unknown Sources" (Allow installation of non-Market applications) to stick?
I am told that:
Open NT Hidden settings. Click on HACKS. Click on UNKNOWN SOURCES HACK. Bingo DONE! I had to reboot to get it to take effect but I was able to install homecatcher.apk. AWESOMENESS ENSUES! Go ahead and click on the OTA blocker too. Thanks guys for this great thread and hopefully I've added a small part to it.

2) in NT Settings, I can't get the unknown sources box to stay checked

Most of this stuff is explained elsewhere in the forums . . . I know everybody says that, but believe me, it's true!
To get you started - - you can sideload apps on any rooted Nook:
(1) Get the NT Hidden Settings app (which you have)
(2) Goto "Hacks" - - tap "Unknown Sources Hack" Hit "Back"
(3) Goto "Application Settings" - - toggle "unknown sources"
(4) reboot the Nook
(5) Check in "NT Hidden Settings" . . "Applications Settings" . . to see if "Unknown Sources" is still checked. If not, repeat the steps above.
It's not unusual for people to have to do this 2 or 3 times to get the hack to "stick". Some people swear by toggling each setting on and off a couple times before rebooting. I know it's a PIA, but as far as I know everybody eventually get's it to 'stick' after a number of repeats.
Good news is, once you get Unknown Sources to stick, you won't have to mess with it again unless your restore to stock & re-root.
The "Nook Color Applications" app works well on the Nook Tablet, as noted above. You might also want to look at Go Launcher or ADW Launcher - they give you a new desktop with multiple home screens and other features, but still let you use the stock book reader, Netflix, etc. While some people here are using CM7 or CM9, a lot of people have really tricked-out the stock NT ROM with a 3rd-party launcher. I run mine like that, and I've actually liked it better than CM7.
But I'll switch to CM9 immediately once it's a bit more stable. ;-)
Best of luck!
awesome! I will try tonight. Right now, my two year old wont let me play with "his" nook. lol
Thanks, this forum is the best!
Hey there,
I've been having a similar problem. I recently rooted (using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529553 method), and have been able to access the market and download apps that way, but I'm unable to sideload them. When I try to open any app it says "Unable to install. This application was not able to install onto your device. Please "Archive" and then "Unarchive" the application to try again." I have an SD card inserted, and this error comes up with the Amazon market, and the HomeCatcher app. My unknown sources box is checked though! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Best of luck!

If you want to have Google play installed the easiest process to do now is to make a boot able cm SD card. CM10+ is the most recent so I recommend using it. There are also SDC versions of cm7 and 9. These don't affect your internal storage at all so the level of caution for bricking is low.
If you want to look into these SDC ROMs head over to the iamafanof site. There are links to the ROms and further instructions on how to create the cards.
