Am trying to fix the ES File Explorer Root access issues by following the steps posted by Joker Fuel in one of the TP forum.
I cant get to delete the current apk under /system/app using any of the File Explorers. How do i get this file deleted ? Any help.
This is what am trying to accomplish:
OK guys, for u guys that are having issues Using ES File Explorer Root permission.
The Root does not work while the app is in /system/app.
so to get it working, u must delete the com.estrongs.android.pop-1.apk
couple ways to do it. u can download a free file explorer off the market and delete the file under /system/app
---------------------------------
reboot your new BUTTAH
download ES from the market
If I am understanding what you want to do correctly you need to remount /system as read/write so you can remove the file.
There are many ways to do this. I like to use RomToolbox, available on the market. Once installed you can open up "Scripter" and there will be a couple of pre-defined scripts, one to remote System is Read/Write.
After you run that script you can jump to the Root browser, one button above, and delete what you need from the /system/app directory.
Remember to remount your /system as Read-Only using the other script, or reboot when your done. It is a bit dangerous to leave it as Read/Write. Better safe than sorry
Thanks. gonna give it a try !
Titanium Backup works on Buttah. Downloaded through market. Then I was able to pull ES through that. Then re-install through market. Now root access and mountable system.

I flashed the new 2.2 obidian last night and I find I need to flash or push or install an apk for the calendar so it will sync. I have placed the apk on the root of the internal sd and have tried to install etc with astro and with Root explorer to no avail it just said not installed. Is there a way to move it or copy it to systems/apps? I know nothing about adb and am confused by what I have read about it. In the thread for Obedian it was mentioned using astro or root explorer to push it to systems/apps but did not say how it could be done. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi to all!
This is my first android device, and i am new to Unix-like systems.
I have tried to unlock, root & install custom rom on my phone. Used this instruction:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423
Everything go perfect until step:
DO NOT FORGET TO DO THIS PART: After the install of RomRacers recovery boot up your phone. Open up your favorite file browser (I used Astro file manager to do this ) and navigate to /system/etc/ and delete the file called 'install-recovery.sh'
I always get "read only" trouble. As I understand, the problem in root access. I haven’t got it.
I have tried:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740748
Then
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046626
But in any case i get "read only" truing to delete 'install-recovery.sh'
Will be grateful for tips how to successfully root my device.
..
a guide is in the "stickys" in general forum made by swiftks

Use root tools. And there's a little button to change it from read only to read/write. Then delete the file.

Tnx very much, it worked.
But i still can't delete the
install-recovery.sh
Trying via all possible file explorers, and also tried
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740748
one more time. still get
rm failed for /system/etc/install-recovery.sh, Read-only file system
You need to go into the options of the file manager and enable root, and also mount system as writable. I use ES file explorer from market...its free. If it still fails my guess is you are not rooted.
I have root access, have checked with root checker basic. Have enabled root in es file explorer, still same problem.
I have made some photos, in attached files.
Did you also check the option 'mount system directory as writable' in es file explorer options

It helped. Thank you very much!
I recently installed Charmeleon Rom v5.0.0 and I want to get rid of the android_audio.mp3 (boot animation audio).
When I try to delete the file with Root Explorer it says Failed to delete. When I try to delete the file with Terminal Emulator it gives me a access denied error.
I've been trying to find the answer through google for over an hour. It sounds like some Root Explorers you need to Mount R/W to have access to delete/rename files. This sounds like what I need but so far I can't find any Root Explorer apps that mention R/W.
Any ideas?

Did you remount the filesystem to r/w in root explorer before deleting the file?

Thats my issue. I dont know how to mount the /system to be rw.
I guess I'm on the right track but mount /system rw didn't seem to be the correct syntax.
check in tweaks
I used free ver of Rom tool box .there's a one called root browser in that ..

I was able to delete the file with Root Browser within Rom Toolbox Lite.
I think it's odd that the Root Browser included with Rom Toolbox Lite includes extra options that you don't have when you just download Root Browser by itself. Using the version included in Rom Toolbox Lite I updated the folder permissions to include write access then I was able to delete the file.
Thanks!
I just unlocked the bootloader on my Atrix 4g, I followed this guide-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423
It all seemed to go as it should, bootloader unlocked, romracer installed, but i dont seem to have root access.
Im failing at this point-
DO NOT FORGET TO DO THIS PART: After the install of RomRacers recovery boot up your phone. Open up your favourite file browser (I used Astro file manager to do this ) and navigate to /system/etc/ and delete the file called 'install-recovery.sh'
I downloaded Astro file manager and it doesnt see the files, so I downloaded this-
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.liberty.toolbox&hl=en
With rom toolbox I am able to find the files but not change the name or delete them.
What should I do next?
Use root explorer (paid) or es explorer (free). Those two are the only ones I've found that work to delete/move/copy files.

These are fine. I prefer Total Commander. However, none will work unless you mount your desired directory with R/W permissions. Every file manager with root permissions will have that option.
I downloaded es file explorer, had to go into the apps setting-root settings and tick upto root for it to let me see the files, i then tried to rename the file and it says operation failed,
can you suggest anything else?

Thanks, I just had a quick read about read write permissions and I dont have write permission, so im not rooted,
My phone tells me that im unlocked when its booting, so thats the bootlocker, but i need root to alter permissions to rename files, and i cant get root without renaming the files.
Is that right?
Does any body know if i can just use steps 2 and 3 of this guide instead?http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202883
its for at&t so do i risk bricking the phone?
or is the risk of bricking step 1, unlocking the bootloader?
Hi,
I'm using the last Envi-ROM based in stock 23.0.1.A.0.167 and I would like to disable the charger plugged in notification so I tried to remove ChargerPluggedIn.ogg from /system/media/audio/ui but it says that it's an only read file and I can't do it. I'm root and I tried with RootExplorer, ES File Explorer, ADB (mv, chmod,...) but I'm not able to change the permissions neither the file nor /system folder.
Any idea?
Thanks in advance
So i just changed the permissions of that file with rom toolbox lite to 777 without issues. I also moved it up a directory without issue. Maybe try that app ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/...+lite&pcampaignid=APPU_EaWoVMe9Nce7mwWlnILYCw)
If you still have issues why don't you backup your phone and redownload envi-rom zip. Open the zip and navigate to the file and delete it. Then install that moded zip file and restore your data from the backup?
You can try to remove this file via file explorer in recovery, like for example aroma explorer.

Nope no good. Could only see /system/bin/ no other directories.
Thanks a lot for your comments. I tried toolbox with the same result as the previous tries. With aroma explorer I can only access to /system/bin/. So no luck for the moment. It seems that the only solution is install again the ROM without the file, but I still looking for other alternatives first.
