What are the advantages of a AOSP based Ice Cream Sandwich ROM against Samsung based one? It seems like most of the features are working in the leaked sammy ROMS (obviously since they have access to the ICS source) versus AOSP alpha builds (of which there is one currently AFAIK, the famed Cyanogen Mod). Will I sacrifice many features by using a AOSP ICS rom versus a leaked sammy ROM?
What does an AOSP-based ICS have over a samsung base?

Doubtful that AOSP ICS ROMs will support MHL on this device, as current AOSP Gingerbread ROMs don't. That's a huge strike in my book, and one that keeps me from using them.

We already got TV Out/HDMI running in CM9.

ICS has MHL built in,So once cm9 gets stable you can use MHL.

I stand corrected. May start looking at CM9 now once it's stable.
MHL (aka streaming HD content via the micro USB port), is that the ONLY thing that differs between AOSP and sammy ICS ROM's? Doesn't seem like a showstopper to me.

Of course it isn't the ONLY thing that differs. But it was what was keeping me from looking at AOSP ROMs on the GS2. Every ROM is different. Even stock based ROMs. The only thing you can do is flash them yourselves and decide if you like them.
EDIT: and besides, there are other posts above that corrected me; looks like CyanogenMod9 has MHL working.

Hi!
Please all register at forum of www.cyanogenmod.com and ask for development for our Huawei MediPad.
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/50187-cm-for-huawei-mediapad/
As long, we make no noise, all developers at cyanogenmod will think, that there is no nedd for such a development.
Kind regards,
Thomas
we dont have kernel source code for ICS, only for HC....do you think that CM9 based on honeycomb will be better than official ICS?

If you've ever used the official HDMI output then you would know the answer to that... Hell yeah.

Do you mean that the HC HDMI output is better than the crappy ICS HDMI output thus better using the HC as the base? If that's true then you should try the OsiMood version (ICS based on the Russian firmware)... the HDMI output is much better... no more dithering and higher res output... and Skype works without problem. I recommend OsiMood because it's already rooted.
As for this whole CM9... I don't think you can make a CM9 (which is basically ICS) with HC kernel as the base.
Yes you can. Check the nook color ics...
They built a ics around a gingerbread kernel... So why shouldn't it work with a honeycomb kernel?
It will require some backports but other than that it should be doable.
I don't want to damp-down you enthusiasm, but seriously, what do you want to achieve with this?
Even if a motivated and skilled dev is found (please note that rac! already seems to work on a port as announced in the dev forum), he still needs the device. Also, the Mediapad community is very small compared to others and there is less fame to be gained with a port.
The only benefit I can get out of this is to bring some more attention to the device. I don't believe that because of the cm-thread a dev will pick up a MP/SB and start dev'ing for it.
Anyway, good luck!

The latest I believe is 4.1.2 and I'd recommend EPinter. He is really good about keeping his releases up-to-date. (weekly updates if not multiple updates) I have used his ROM as my daily for a long. Stable as a rock, even without HWA, his rom is smooth and pleasant to use.
Also, I believe most of the Atrix developers and users are concerned with a better kernel than newer releases with broken libs and HWA.
Edit: If all you want are the keyboard and camera from 4.2, they have been ported and work with Epinter's rom.
Keyboard bug
Sorry but 4.2 keyboard hides when longpress erase key :/ i don't know how, but it simply hides like a bug...i will try with otrher lenguajes since i use spanish. do you know if it was actually ported to spinter?

it's been a while since i updated my rom (or been on this forum) and am curious what works best. i am more concerned about everything being buttery smooth than having the latest and greatest from aokp or cm. however if one or the other of those is running well i'd love to do that. so yeah, what are you guys using these days and how is it treating you?

Bump.. I just picked up one of these and am interested in the answer to your question
Been using [ROM] AOKP(Jellybean 4.2.2 )Task650 (3.19.2013) (WIFI ONLY) for a day and everything works even my samsung keyboard dock. Really impressed with it, before that I had Task650 ICS Rom for the longest with everything running smoothly and no crashes. Netflix, Direct TV NFL ticket and others worked with no issues. I don't think you can get the Tasks650 ICS Rom anymore since he only supports his newest releases .

sounds pretty good. thanks for the info.
I've personally always enjoyed Infamous ICS, and the latest CM10.1 builds have been great. Try any of the recent ROMs and see which one fits you the best.
I've been experimenting with a few ROM's lately.
So far, imo, the best has been. CM10 (4.1.2) and Infamous ICS 3.0
Smooth and responsive all around. CM10 is Jelly Bean smooth but doesn't have the Samsung stuff....
I have been using CM based ROMs for a year, but now I am curious about the Samsung based ROMs (Rooted, deodexed, without bloatware and such) I have read the FAQ thread, but it does not offer me a proper explanation about the differences between CM and Samsung. Only that Samsung ROMs are "smoother". So I am asking in this thread for a wider explanation and to solve some questions I have:
-Why are there more Samsung ROMs than AOSP? Sure that the CM ROMs get more updated, and that people here love open sourcing, but I am curious about this fact.
-Are AOSP ROMs more suited for a "liberated" device? Samsung has closed the hardware sources of the GS3, and thats why the AOSP devs can not release a full working AOSP ROM. At least until Samsung decides to release the sources...
-Also, the Samsung based development is depending on the official updates provided by Samsung right? So the day Samsung drops the service, should we use AOSP instead?
-What is the cuality of a Samsung based ROM? Its much better that the official Touchwiz ROM?
-Its true that the Samsung ROMs have a much better sound than the CM ROMs, or it is vice versa? I am quite an audiophile, so this point interests me.
Lastly, I would like that you could solve me a question. One day, I changed from a CM10.1 ROM to a custom 4.1.2. When I did this, I could not use the Google Backup on my apps, and, for example, I could not recover the Whatsapp conversations. Moreover, I could not access to the SD card through the File Explorer in that ROM. So, is this a common compatibility problem between AOPS and Touchwiz or it is more of a ROM issue?

They're easy to create, plenty of updated versions from samsung and a lot of people prefer them

Question doesn't make sense. IMHO, there are more useful and configurable settings in aosp. Downfall of closed sources are camera quality and possibly battery life

Yes we need rom bases and kernel source code from samsung. Once samsung drop kernel source for the s3, aosp development will slow down considerably

What? If you mean quality,.its much the same with some tweaks to enhance performance, user experience etc. If you're rooted and not using a samsung based custom rom, you're missing out

Apparently but I've not noticed a difference. I listen to a lot of music and am completely satisfied. That said, if there is a difference - it would be understandable

This is an android 4.2 thing. Follow link in my signature to sticky roll-up. I wrote a thread about 4.2 sdcard data you should read
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 4
Top and bottom is its users choice . With a nandroid it takes a short time to test .
Personally i cannot stand AOKP/AOSP .
Sound you have got to give this a try IRS open up a whole new world of sound outputs .

This is a question about custom ROMs...it's the first time I'm really looking for one, and before anyone suggests CM - that is useless to me due to lack of functioning MHL.
So I'm looking for a ROM that has all the phone features functional (as in "in a usable for daily life degree").
I'm an Android game/app reviewer and I've been looking at apps for screen recording, but seeing how none of them allow for a reasonable experience on a Galaxy S2, I'll stick with external capture...and since I can't afford any better device right now, I thought I'd turn to custom ROMs for a while.
...so any suggestions?
[btw, I'm using the Galaxy S2 GT-i9100 international variant]
Not gonna recommend a cusROM as that's against XDA rules....but as a general answer, have you looked at the 'hybrid' ROMs?..... Samsung based but without the bloat and with the added customizability of aosp/aokp.
If MHL is a Sammy standard, then they *should* include it
This might be my S2, or it might be my W...but it's definitely CM

Technically, my question is about something pretty much no ROM developer ever addressed so it shouldn't be against the rules o_o
Anyway, is there any "list" topic of place where I can find hybrid roms only?
Look for alliance rom or biftor rom or neat rom ect ect. Sammy based roms are hybrid roms.
