Hi everyone, I've had my Vibrant since mid-December and I love it except I get VERY spotty reception in my house.
I know it's not a carrier issue, as my mom and friends have the same carrier (Wind Mobile) and they seem to have decent/good reception at my place. My reception drops consistently in my main floor and is non-existent in my basement.
I'm running TW Bionix V with KA7.
Is anyone aware of a hardware fix (similar to the GPS fix) that might be do-able and works?
Thanks
Have you tried flashing different modems to see if any of them make a difference?
You may also be experiencing bad reception due to the fact that the antenna is located at the bottom of the phone so our hands block it when we hold the phone in portrait orientation. Why Samsung chose to be it there is beyond me.
I know what u r going thrugh, my 2 brothers have vibrants aswell and for some ****ing reason my vibrant has significantly worss signal then their vibrant. I already tryed opening it and puting an external antenna but it only helps if the antenna is going straight ought of the phone, as soon as I try to close the cover it losses its usfulness.
I've tried different modems in the past.
KA7 so far has been the best, but that isn't saying too much.
I have actually just opened up my phone and located the 2 copper connectors at the bottom right (when my phone is turned back-up). I read in the Correct GPS Fix thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878970) that these are the cell reception connections.
I put a small piece of rubber underneath the connection and SO far it actually seems to have improved it.
I will report back throughout the day. Typically I lose reception while walking through my house so I'll see if that happens as well.
*Sigh*
I think it may have been a placebo effect. The reception is still dropping off on my phone while in the house.
Doesn't seem like bending the copper connection does very much.
I'd just try different modems. For me, KA6 < KA7 < KA5/JL5 and KB1 has been great for download speeds.
You're holding it wrong! Hold it the correct way (at the top).
Just kidding, but yeah, try different modems. KA5 and KB1 gave me the best reception. Or maybe Tmobile has poor coverage in your area.
Why dont you use wifi calling feature at home. Then you shouldnt have a problem unless you dont have internet at home.
I wish I could use wifi calling!
I'm actually in Canada using Wind Mobile (not T-Mobile), and it doesn't work unless you're on the T-Mobile network/using their SIM if I'm not mistaken.
The coverage in my area is decent (my mom and friends get steady reception, while I do not).
It seems to be specifically for my Vibrant.
I will try changing the modem to maybe KA6 (I can just flash with CW?) and see if that fixes anything.
My phone have a hardware defect when i'm holding the phone on it's bottom left.

When you say your mom and her friends have great reception, just curious, are they using Smartphone?
Because if they are using feature phone then the phone might be displaying 2g network strength oppose to 3g which your phone by default tries to get on.

They are on the same network (Wind), my mom is using a Blackberry Pearl 9100 and my friend is using a Moto XT720. Both are set to only use the WCDMA network. So it wouldn't be a problem with them on 2G.
I just find it odd, some people are reporting great reception with the phone, but my reception has been half a$$.

**** I wish I knew what makes my vibrant reception worse then other vibrants. if it is the internal antenna then I might work something out but if it is a defective motherboard then I'll be waisting my time.

I have noticed that my reception has improved when I started using a ruber/plastic case... somehow direct contact with my skin affected reception. I have an Otterbox Commuter.

No, actually, the other way around. I have BETTER reception with the Otterbox, as weird as it may sound.

I normally just load the modem into the internal sd card, then reboot into recovery and then install by "choose which to install> select it and say YES
That never has problems sometime CWM can hang it it is a hassle.
Also, there is a patch that allows to use wfi calling doesn't matter that carrier doesn't like it it works........

If you're running flawlessly...then do you mind posting your APN settings? I've been searching the forum and the web for days now and managed to find a thread one time but have had no luck finding it again. Someone had posted settings for Streak on ST that worked great. I'm having MMS issues and poor service while my wifes AT&T Note on ST works perfect with 4G and all. I'm using a T-mobile Streak on ST and I'm about to go postal.
I searched and searched otherwise I wouldn't be posting. (<----NOOB....I know.)
Your problem is that you have an AWS (T-Mobile) Streak. Straight Talk is an AT&T MVNO, meaning they purchase signal from AT&T. T-Mobile Streaks on AT&T will never do any better than EDGE (2G) speeds because the radio frequencies for T-Mobile are slightly different from AT&T. Thus your Streak will never do any better than EDGE speeds on Straight Talk.
And no, there's no way to change the radio to get it to work on Straight Talk, so don't ask.
Isn't the AWS streak rare? But for no apparent reason it would seem.
AWS Streaks are in fact quite rare. The reason you don't hear much about them these days is simply because the AT&T frequencies are the standard used in the rest of the world, and most of our posters are from Europe and Asia, which never saw an AWS Streak.
Put simply, the AWS Streak is a US exclusive for a small carrier.
So my contract is up in two days and I am looking at switching to a Net10 AT&T prepaid SIM service... Any real concerns or issues? I am on latest firmware and radios and running Infection 2.9.1 ROM.
Anybody doing this, comments or wish you had done it differently?
Probably going to pull the trigger in this today unless any red flags go up.
BTW, number porting is not an issue. I'm just going to move my VZW number to Google Voice once everything is working properly.
EDIT: ordered SIM and $50 unlimited card, should be here tomorrow. Hope all goes well...

I think it is. I'm not 100% but I guess you'll see when you use your sim card.

The Rezound out of the box supports the 900 MHz and 2100 MHz bands, which are used internationally for 3G and HSPA+. In the US, AT&T uses the 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands, and T-Mobile uses 1700 MHz and 1900 MHz. The Rezound is great as a global phone, but it's always been limited to EDGE data in the US. This has never changed with firmware and radio updates.
The methods in the thread referenced earlier will let you get the 850 MHz band working with a very non-optimized, weak signal. That means you'll sometimes have 3G or HSPA+ on AT&T. But unless someone figures out how to optimize the signal there, you're probably still going to be stuck with EDGE most of the time.

I don't think anyone is going to find a way to optimize it for a stable connection for a while. The thread has been very quiet for a while now. Some users did get different results and I read through the thread and some people got better signal using a calibrated sensation nv file.

Hmmm... Unfortunately it appears this isn't going to work as I hoped.
What's working: Voice and SMS out of the box... MMS, Data (2G Edge, speeds in the range of 15k to 50K) with some tweaking in the APN settings.
I tried the tweaks in the other thread and changing the NV settings, it would say it connected at HSPA+ and pull an IP address, but even with the AT&T tower less than a 1/2 mile in direct line of sight from my office window it would never open a web page or work with any app that required a network connection and signal strength was in the nether regions according to Network Signal Info.
Oh well... guess it was worth a shot.

Pretty sure I got everything right. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to get everything to work on 2g , and I was able to pull an IP address when it said HSPA, I just couldn't stay connected or get any data through. Spent about 2 or 3 hours working on it this afternoon and finally gave up.

After almost a year of inputting various *# and #* codes, I finally got my i717 to work on T-Mobile LTE (southside of greater Chicagoland).
This is on stock ATT JB rom and modem. On a good day I will get over 20Mbps down and 8-10Mbps up. epc.tmobile apn worked best at first, but after about a day or so, fast.tmobile apn setting did about the same. Service mode is set to Automatic and the setting in Device Info *#*#4636#*#* was set to LTE/GSM/WCDMA.
I thought all was fine until I would leave an LTE area and go into a normally (for me) 4g area
What is happening now is that I lose my LTE and go straight into EDGE. It is almost like my regular 4g is gone in areas where it used to be pretty good
Before LTE working, I was getting pretty good 4g (between 4-9Mbps down and about 1 up). This was using the same stock ATT JB rom, but with T-Mobile Blaze modem. Very seldom, like almost never, would I see EDGE. To get this I would have to go into service mode *#2263# and select WCDMA as my band preference.
If I try to use the Blaze modem, I cannot get the phone to stay in the LTE/GSM/WCDMA setting.
In a nutshell, why am I going to EDGE instead of 4g when I leave LTE?
If it matters, I am on the 5G / 100 minute $30 prepaid plan
TIA
Pretty common problem with the JB modem. You pull LTE or you pull E. For me, the best modem is UCMB4. It's an ICS modem, though, so I'm not sure how it'll work on jellybean. But you may give it a try. I pull the best speeds -- by far -- with it, and I pull consistent LTE. With the different ported modems I would have calls not go through sometimes -- weird -- and just "okay" speeds. With the ucmb4 I get solid all-around service.
I've gone from TMobile LTE to regular 4g on my mostly stock Note in Chicago. No AWS mod, no code messin, no nothin.
ATT modems will only work with tmobile refarmed 1900mhz areas. Your blaze modem is set to 1700mhz frequency band instead of 1900mhz. Thats why it works better.
Tmobile has a lot of dead areas on regular 4g with the LTE capable modem. But that's the tradeoff. Lte and refarmed 1900mhz band or just regular old 4g hspa.
no phone on Tmo 4g LTE in STL
Hey guys,
I've recently run into a problem with my unlocked i717 on TMO. It runs Android 4.1.2 (AT&T update flashed to the phone) but every since TMO rolled out their LTE in my area I get 4G LTE signals (1 or 2 bars mostly, but at times 3-4 bars) and I can send texts and data, but it cancels both incoming and outgoing phone calls.? What can I do to correct this? TMO's solution is to buy the N2 or wait til Nov for the N3. Any ideas?
Thanks...

I still like my i717, but seem to spend more and more time screwing around with it to get it to work right. Good excuse to get a Note 3 I guess
Hi everyone,
I'm new to the Note, but definitely not new to Android or XDA.
I've got the phone "unlocked" via the radio trick here: http://str8pt.blogspot.com/2013/06/unlock-simfree-method-for-galaxy-note.html
I've rooted it, and have tried a few different ROMs with different radios.
The Blaze radio (and others) I mention are from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679722
I am in Melbourne, FL in case location makes any difference.
Here's what I am seeing:
CyanogenMOD 10.1.3 - using Blaze ICS radio I am getting only EDGE speeds. Using "Official TMO ICS Radio" (I'm guessing it's the one from the TMO Note?) , I get NO connectivity.
Stock 4.1.2 - using Blaze ICS radio I am getting 4G, however the signal meter is totally empty as if there's just enough signal to register connectivity but not enough to register a single bar. Download speeds are abysmal in comparison to other TMO phones I've used here - I am seeing downloads at around 1.5MB - other phones are 6, 7, even 8 MB.
My question are as follows:
Using CyanogenMod, should I be using the i717 version? Or the TMO Note version? Is there anything I can do with ANY particular radio to get better than EDGE?
Using the Stock ROM (or a variant), is there are a way to get the signal cluster to function properly? Any way to get better download speeds?
I read that the TMO 4.0.4 stock ROM image can be installed via ODIN and apparently it works correctly (if I am reading correctly) - would the TMO 4.1.2 stock ROM image be installed via ODIN and work as well? (If I can even find a full download of it?)
Should I expect to have to re-flash the radio each time with each ROM? From what I've seen, if I don't, I lose any ability to get 4G until I flash it again. I'd be stuck on EDGE.
Thanks so much guys! I've searched and read till my eyes are crossing and not finding the answers I need. I hope that with the experience that can be found in this forum maybe I can get where I need to be!
Thanks again!

I recently obtained an I717 too, unlocked it, and got it functioning with my tmobile prepaid plan. I'm still on gingerbread rom and using KID radio with decent success. just 4G , using WCDMA band 1700 (*#2263#). I get consistent decent speeds but not LTE.
The hands down best modem to use is UCMB4 - Google it. But it can cause problems with some jelly bean ROMs.
If you want jb more than anything, play with modems. If you want speed AND stability, go jellybean sandwich or black star X with the aforementioned modem.
If you want WiFi calling download skeleton key.
Ucmb4 with any of those three and the proper APN will get you LTE as fast as it's offered in your area

UCMB4 - EDGE only
UVLG3 - 3G/DC(WTF??)/H+ 6.01Mbps up/1.07 Mbps down
UVLE1 - Phone freezes, locks on black screen, had to pull battery
ICSBLAZE - 3G/DC/H+ Network communication issues message when running speedtest.
By the way, what the heck is "DC" on the network indicator where 3G or H/H+ normally is? I've never seen that before!

By the way, just checked and CM's WiFi tethering is working as well - nice!
Not sure what I did differently this time but this evening the signal indicator is showing real signal strength, equivalent to what I was seeing on another phone on CM.

If you're on a modem that'll work with LTE, yep. Otherwise HSPA or Edge.
Make sure, I forget and my Note no longer has service, that the top option is set under Network Type or whatever it is. Network Mode? I don't know, you'll figure it out. The thing that lets you pick between GSM, WCDMA etc..etc..

Ok, I got it figured out. I am on the FAST APN and set to WCDMA/LTE . I'm on 3G/H+ here in the house now - will see how it goes when I head out tomorrow.
Either way, I think it's time to make a backup - it's running marvelously and doing everything I would expect it to!

[EDIT]
Scratch that - it worked great until I did the first reboot - then it wouldn't boot up again, even with a battery pull.

I went ahead and flashed UCMB4 and was showing 4g lte after reboot. my phone info setting says WCDMA preferred (it shows no LTE option at all ) and the *#2263# menu setting says "automatic". on the fast.t-mobile.com apn
I use UCMD3 and get LTE almost everywhere. Hellybean is a pretty good ROM, try it out!
