OK, don't kill me. New here, just got my Gtab today. I have read a lot and a lot and a lot. Maybe too much. I have not touched my tab yet. Can I start following the easy steps to adding a new ROM, or do I need to do something to the tab first? It looks like vegan is the one to use, but exactly what file is it that I use? I am tech savy, but very new to doing these types of things. Sorry for asking such a noob question. But my brain is in overload right now.

Make sure you know which version android you are on and what bootloader you have. There is a 1.1 and a 1.2 dev branch and I think it makes a big difference. I'm still on 1.1 Vegan 5.1. Froyo and happy with that. Newer builds use different boot loader, make sure you read instructions thoroughly before you flash device.

Check your version in the settings about tablet screen. Most likely you will have a 1.1 based kernel. So to answer your question, No, it does not apply to you.
Look under system and find "about device". Android version is listed there.
Ok, so I just powered up for the first time. Adroid OS 2.2, Tap 1.1-3389. BUT, to really make things worse, I think I have a dead pixel in the display. CRAP
Well wifey says the pixel does not bother her, So I will go ahead and get the ROM going. Is the Vegan 5.1.1 the correct version?

Yes, vegan 5.1.1 is a 1.1 based Rom, you'll be fine with it. HOWEVER, I do suggest that you at least update to 3588. It's still a 1.1 based Rom so flashing vegan 5.1.1 will be the same. it's just a newer version, and useful in case you want ot go to the 1.2 rom's later on.
HOWEVER, me, personally, since you're stock, I would update to 3588, theen flash teh stock 4349, then flash Brilliant Corners (it's just a 1.2 bootloader port of Vegan 5.1.1) That way, if you want to ever get on the honeycomb bandwagon when all the wrinkles are ironed out, you're already on the 1.2 bootloader.
I WAS running Vegan 5.1.1, and I liked it, don't ge tme wrong. I decided to take the plunge and get to the 1.2 bootloader, since most roms will be going that direction in the future anyway. It was more work to undo what I had already done, just to get back to where you are starting from, so you are already halfway there.
I'm not allowed to post a link to another forum that contains the files and information for Brilliant Corners, but if you use some googling skills, I'm sure you can find it. The developer that was part of Vegan 5.1.1, and created TNT lite, and is currently working on the Honeycomb port, switched most 1.1 roms over to the 1.2 bootloader, including Brilliant Corners.
I'm new to all this rooting as well what helped me was some of the video tutorials on youtube. It helps to see something being done before you do it. I have Vegan-tabs 7.0.0 running on mine.

If you already have Clockworkmod installed via Unrevoked, then you do not need to update to HBOOT 1.02 or use Revolutionary to obtain S-OFF. There are additional benefits to having S-OFF, so you may want to do it anyway, but Cyanogenmod 7 will work just fine with S-ON and HBOOT 0.57. It's simply a matter of going into Clockworkmod, wiping everything from the device, and installing the Cyanogenmod ROM in its place.
I know it doesn't matter now that you've already done it, but I wanted to point this out in case anyone else with the same question sees this thread.

Thanks drumist for clarifying things. Now, i'm definitely understanding things a little bit more
Here are my observation after 24 hours of usage on v2.3 andriod -
Pros:
1. Its definitely faster than my earlier ROM which is based on v2.2. Probably its because of absence of HTC Sense UI.
2. Enabling/Disabling Wifi is faster now.
3. Inbuilt FileManager. This is a must have feature. Glad its inbuilt now.
4. Videos play smoothly now (.avi). Don't if this is because of v2.3 ROM or is it because of new player (MX Video player) i've installed.
Kind of Cons: (These are not complaints. Just my observations which i feel to be missing in my new ROM)
1. In my Earlier ROM, when i start dialing the number, beneath it shows list of contacts starting with those corresponding names. (I am definitely missing this feature. I hope some one already has a solution to it.)
2. Missing HTC Sense Inbuilt widgets like SMS Viewer,Photo Album
3. Setting Alarms, especially scrolling hours/minutes thru finger swipe is missing.
And last but not least, thanks to CyanogenMod and all the other devlopers/testers who participated in developing this ROM and making it successful.

Sense and Cyanogenmod come with different dialer apps. I don't think it's possible to install the Sense dialer in Cyanogenmod (for the same reason you can't use Sense widgets, etc.). However, you can download different dialer apps from the Android Market and use them in place of the default one that came with Cyanogenmod. Search the Market for "dialer" and a few should show up. One of them might have the feature you want. (I've never used any of them though, so I don't know how good they are.)

The Wiki article is a good place to start, however, it isn't up to date. Select any of the stock ICS based ROMs if you want full functionality as these are the only ROMs where everything works correctly. There are many ICS ROMs both themed and stock Sense available. If you can live without WiFi tethering and some Bluetooth functionality there are several JB based AOSP based ROMs that are otherwise stable and work well. So far all of the KitKat builds have camera exposure issues in addition to the same problems as the JB ROMs. They are more in flux and under heavy development.
It's against the rules of the board to recommend a specific ROM, so you'll have to try for yourself to see what fits your needs and tastes.
However before proceeding you should look over the various threads that are pinned to the top of the different forums. There you will find tons of useful information that will save you trouble later. Remember that if you're coming from any ROM before ICS that you need to first flash a stock ICS factory image so you can install the proper radio baseband otherwise it won't work. None of the after-market ROMs have radios in them. Once an ICS ROM has been flashed you can install other ROMs since all of the later ones use ICS radio basebands.
Edit: One more thing that will help guide you in making your decision. Look at the Dev threads for the ROMs that you're interested in. Usually somewhere in the first or second post the author of the ROM will list the known bugs and issues associated with their ROM, and in the case of ROMs undergoing heavy development they will also list what they know is working well.

I can select any of the stock ICS based ROMs
I'm coming from a ROM before ICS (it was GB) so I need to first flash a stock ICS factory image
Then I will be able to install the proper radio baseband
Once ICS ROM has been flashed I can install other ROMs
Now the new questions are popping up (respectively)
there are many vendors before selecting an ICS stock ROM (Mobilicity, Telus, T-Mobile etc.)
is it safe to select any of them ? (without knowing your phone's vendor)
what is 'stock ICS factory image' ? Can you please mention a link to download it or a guide to flash
what is 'proper' radio baseband ? (mine was 1.13.550L.13DC_30.69b.550L.101D)

Since you're coming from Gingerbread I assume you have an Asian or unbranded Amaze. You need to follow the directions for those models. It requires you to attain s-off prior to flashing an ICS ROM. There are posts explaining the hack you need to do to get s-off. Once s-off you next need to superCID. Once both s-off and superCID have been attained you can flash an ICS ROM. You need to go through this procedure because the stock ROMs have carrier identification codes (CID) which prevent ROMs from one carrier running on another carrier's device. These hacks get around it.
At this point most folks flash the T-Mobile ICS ROM since it's fairly recent and the basis for most of the ICS modified ROMs. Once you've got an ICS radio installed you can then flash any ROM you'd like.
Again read through the pinned threads and familiarize yourself with the procedure. Failure to follow the directions correctly can result in a bricked phone. Then your next post will be in the Amaze unbricking project thread asking for desperate help.
I'm s-on. I didn't need s-off since I'm a T-Mobile customer and already had ICS before I started flashing ROMs. So I'm not going to be much help with the s-off procedure. Like I said, read through the appropriate threads and familiarize yourself on the procedure so you can move forward. For now, until you get s-off it's best to flash back to whatever stock ROM you had because there isn't much you can do until you get s-off and I'm sure you still want to have use of your handset.

2) Next, Place the the downloaded file on your sd card.

4) Once in recovery, go to the Wipe/Format section and select "Format all partitions except SDcard"
5) Finally, after formating completes, verify that you have SmartFlash enabled & then flash the Rom you just downloaded from above..
Once this is complete, you should once again have a working device.

I read through this post and I must say, I'm glad that you got your phone working again, even though it's only GB still.
Having said that I could safely assume that you have rooted your phone and installed 4ext recovery, and I'm hoping that you've performed S-OFF and SuperCID your device.
If you have done that, then I highly recommend you to the T-Mobile stock RUU before you even attempt any custom roms. Personally, I enjoyed the T-Mobile stock experience (well, I debloated it myself using Titanium Backup, removing a lot of the useless T-Mobile stuff ie; T-mobile voicemail, assist, 411 etc)
I actually used that rom for a while. Battery life was nice, the rom itself was really well done, as expected.
But this is all up to you, many of the custom roms here have so much more features than the T-Mobile, with a much smoother experience too.
But like Odysseus said, there are some flaws with the roms. Some have WiFi tether issues, bluetooth, in call volume and codec issues.
It's really a personal decision where you can settle after experiencing the roms first hand. Everybody uses their device differently, so you'll have to test the roms to find which one suits your needs and standards.

About your concerns.. I'm surprise the wire trick gave you some trouble. I don't know about anybody else but I'm assuming it was sort of easy since I got it on my second try.
And yes, the bootloader re-locks itself after you flash the ICS T-Mobile RUU. That's why you're supposed to keep the code saved in a notepad file on your computer

I keep running into pitfalls, and I think it's because I just have bad timing. I know that the Evo LTE is getting close to EOL, and a lot of dev's have either moved onto to new hardware, lost interest in this device, or are now playing around with the new 4.3 RUU or KitKat builds for this device....
I've been heavily modded on many of my older devices, but with my Evo lte I've been stock (rooted, but still S-On) for over a year now, and I'm just starting to want to get more out of this device.
I did a ton of Google searches for ROM's and finally homed in on one, Beanstalk (the older 4.3 stable builds), but I'm just running into issues at every turn.
Currently I'm on Viper4G 3.1.7, purely because it saved my ass, when I tried going to Beanstalk while still S-On (whoops).
I'm currently S-Off with moonshine
HBOOT 2.09.4444
RADIO 1.12.11.1210
while I can now get Beanstalk to install, and boot, and GApps (jb-20130813), I CAN NOT get my phone to activate, I spent probably 4 hours and MANY reboots and re-flashes trying to get it to let me activate. I've tried both the "Stable (8/27)" and the "Latest Stable (9/17)" builds, both do the exact same thing.
So, needing a working phone, I'm back on Viper4G, and wondering, what is the best ROM to look at for this device?

Personally it seems like KitKat needs a little more time in the bakery before I feel ready to put it on my daily use phone.
I even thought about going with the 4.3 RUU right from HTC, but then I started reading all the bugs people where running to, and the fact that you can't downgrade has me worried, and so, like I said about KitKat, I think I just wanted to give that a bit more time as well.
So in a round-about way, I guess I'm asking, what ROM should I be looking at? Is Beanstalk currently the best for this device (I know that's heavily subjective) or is there another ROM I should be looking at that still has active members to bounce issues off of if I run into installation issues?

If s-off you can downgrade via older ruu, viperruu I believe but don't quote me on it. As for me I haven't had any issues on the new update. me personally I'm not a fan of aosp roms. My personal favorite is the 4.3 sense 5.5 from sin and chubbz. I've tried some of the aosp for the new format and those are the ones that I had data problems with. Viper does have a rom for the new layout as well as Yankees. But then again it's all user preference. Personally I would strongly recommend running the new ruu. Captain has a thread listing aosp roms built for the new layout if that is what you are interested in.

Feeling really lost, and could really use a friend *sniff*
I keep running into pitfalls, and I think it's because I just have bad timing. I know that the Evo LTE is getting close to EOL, and a lot of dev's have either moved onto to new hardware, lost interest in this device, or are now playing around with the new 4.3 RUU or KitKat builds for this device....
I've been heavily modded on many of my older devices, but with my Evo lte I've been stock (rooted, but still S-On) for over a year now, and I'm just starting to want to get more out of this device.
I did a ton of Google searches for ROM's and finally homed in on one, Beanstalk (the older 4.3 stable builds), but I'm just running into issues at every turn.
Currently I'm on Viper4G 3.1.7, purely because it saved my ass, when I tried going to Beanstalk while still S-On (whoops).

while I can now get Beanstalk to install, and boot, and GApps (jb-20130813), I CAN NOT get my phone to activate, I spent probably 4 hours and MANY reboots and re-flashes trying to get it to let me activate. I've tried both the "Stable (8/27)" and the "Latest Stable (9/17)" builds, both do the exact same thing.
So, needing a working phone, I'm back on Viper4G, and wondering, what is the best ROM to look at for this device?
I would post in the Beanstalk thread, but the dev has already said and until I posted something in that thread, it hadn't been touched since Dec of 2013...annnnd then a senior member even said
so, I just don't know what ROM I should be looking at, and where to get help on these older ROMs when they have hiccups on install. Can anyone suggest a ROM?
Personally it seems like KitKat needs a little more time in the bakery before I feel ready to put it on my daily use phone.
I even thought about going with the 4.3 RUU right from HTC, but then I started reading all the bugs people where running to, and the fact that you can't downgrade has me worried, and so, like I said about KitKat, I think I just wanted to give that a bit more time as well.
So in a round-about way, I guess I'm asking, what ROM should I be looking at? Is Beanstalk currently the best for this device (I know that's heavily subjective) or is there another ROM I should be looking at that still has active members to bounce issues off of if I run into installation issues?

Being that you're S-off, it is possible to downgrade after running the 4.3 RUU. Also you can try updating your firmware. I haven't been on any of the older partition layout ROMs for quite a long time but I do recommend running the RUU. You will remain S-off and your bootloader may even remain unlocked. (Mine did) If not, it's not a big deal to unlock it again. Most of the limited development remaining for this device is based around the new partition layout. There is even a new Viper build. Just my ¢2.

Here's a tip for the OP. Flash the rom, then reboot into Android without flashing Gapps. THEN reboot into recovery again and flash Gapps. You won't encounter the Welcome screen, so you'll have to add your account through the settings. The same problem happens to me, no matter which AOSP rom.

You know, I did notice that. I didn't post that permutation of installation steps, but I did find that if I flashed either of the "stable" or "latest stable" builds of beanstalk WITHOUT GApps, I could get around the welcome screen, but I still couldn't place a call. Also I noticed that my PRL version was sky high for what I should have. Currently have 16018, but when I checked it while on Beanstalk it was something like 65002 (if my memory is correct) could this be causing issues too?
I never checked the PRL version whole on AOSP, so I truly couldn't tell you.
I have an HTC EVO 4G LTE loaded with DigitalKarma that I bought from a friend.
When I look at Software Information it says that the Android version is 2.3.5 which I believe is what the phone launched with. The Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE spec page on this site says that it's Android 4.0.3. Should I infer that I could just upgrade to Android 4.0.3 rather than a mod?
I'm looking for the latest greatest stable mod out there but I'm not finding any reviews or anything. What mod(s) would you recommend for someone that never wants to change mods again? These mods fall into different families that I know nothing about yet, so suggestions for mods of the different types might be good. Mods that seem to stand out in my searching are Dirty Unicorns, Beanstalk, and Viper 4G.
I'm not a developer or tester or anything; I'm just a guy that wants a good end user experience without a lot of complication and heartache.

I must have asked a touchy question. The internet is too full of opinions to not yield one after a few hours. Let me start over:
It looks like my choices are Sense based (stock?) or AOSP based. People seem to be very happy with some of the AOSP roms but I've also seen that there have been problems with camera functions and menu buttons. Are there any AOSP builds out there that have solved these problems? And to what extent? Perhaps sense based is better for a noob like myself. I've read of some Sense based roms being as configurable as AOSP roms.
Most of what I have read about OSs for the 4G LTE were written before 2013. I get the impression that development has stopped for many of the mods that are out there. Maybe they were complete, or maybe the developers got new phones; idk. I'm looking for ROMS that are the most fully developed. I don't want to install a ROM that stopped development before it could reach its full potential (lacking features that hadn't been figured out at the time).
Do you have any suggestions on which mods I should try? Tell me what you like about them if you can. Or tell me that I'm a dumb ass and that I should've searched the forums and found the thread where someone asked the same exact question last week.
Thank you everyone. If it wasn't for you developers I probably wouldn't be able to have a smart phone at all.

IMO, Sense is the most stable on this device. The last official RUU that HTC released was 4.3. You'll find all the instructions you'll need in my guide down in my sig. There are more current Lollipop roms you can flash, but aren't as stable.

I have one more question regarding the process. Since someone has already loaded DigitalKarma on this phone, should I follow one of the guides from the beginning of the process? Are there different instructions for a phone that's already been flashed?

Depends on what you want to accomplish. I suggest that you follow the guide from the beginning. The 4.3 RUU has an updated partition table for the phone which newer roms use. By flashing the RUU, you will unroot your phone. The rest of the guide will get you back to root. It's a little bit of work, but it should be fairly simple since the guide walks you through it all. If you really don't want the stability issues of Lollipop right now, there are quite a few stable KitKat roms that are really good.
