I own a Galaxy S2 for AT&T. I had rooted it, installed Clockwork Mod Recovery and CM7 without any problems. I found an article from CNET about a ICS Rom download. I'm sorry I cannot post the link as I am a new user and the forum rules do not allow me to. The article is called "Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich how-to guide" on CNET UK.
And I was interesting in trying this new ROM. So I made a back up using the CM Recovery, downloaded the file, and flashed the ROM per the directions. It flashed without any problem and booted right up into ICS. At first glance, everything was alright, with the exception of a few bugs. I noticed the touch buttons did not work, except for the home button. Then I noticed that the phone functions did not work. So I attempted to reboot into recovery only to discover it was gone, along with my backups I had made. Now, I can't even get the phone into download mode (volume buttons + power). Also, the phone is seemingly unrooted now. I fear I have bricked it. I'm sorry if this was in another post, but I'm in panic mode now. Can my phone be fixed? Thank you for any help you can provide.
Try download mode again (volume down/power/home button, release power button the moment the device switches on still holding the other two). You say the phone is unrooted, does this mean the phone actually works, but you can't get into recovery or download mode ? If this is the case, there's no way in the world you can't get into download mode. I've never heard of an otherwise working phone unable to get into download mode (broken recovery I believe tho, that does happen sometimes).
If your phone doesn't work & you really can't get into download mode, you can try a jig (search for Samsung Galaxy S2 jig on eBay), but that's probably unlikely to work to be honest (but still worth a try).
Your next options would be a JTAG repair (search on here) which would probably be cheaper than sending it to Samsung which is your other option.
Also, you've got an AT&T Galaxy S2, which means if you're in the US, you either have an SGH-I777, or an SGH-I727, which is the Skyrocket. (LTE version of GS2)
The instructions you followed are from the UK, which means they were for the GT-I9100, which is the international version of the GS2.
Check under your battery. It will have your model number on the label.
If you have an SGH-I777, you need to be here.
If you have an SGH-I727, you need to be here.
You will probably find better advice in your appropriate forum to get your device working again. Not that MistahBungle doesn't offer good advice - he does! Just want you to have the correct information for your device.
Good point Ctomgee Looks like I read everything but the first sentence of the OP.
First off, thank you for the advice. I greatly appreciate it. Okay, I was using this forum post: "[GUIDE] Fix an unflashable or soft bricked GSII" and in it, it mentions getting to download mode the incorrect way, which explains why I could not get into download mode.
I followed the instructions in the post to the letter, flashed everything and according to Odin, it was successful. The phone booted up and what I see is what appears to be the stock OS. However, the phone functions still will not work and the soft keys on the bottom are also "screwy" (i.e. only the home button works). Are there any ways to revert my GS2 to stock, as in when I first bought it, so I can start completely over, like from a clean slate? I'm just so confused right now, I thought I had a handle on this stuff, but I guess not. I'm worried I messed up my phone for good.
Also, when I hit the power button, there is no option to reboot the phone, only shut off.
That's because you've obviously flashed incorrect firmware for your phone. We have no idea on this forum whether you've bricked your phone or not because we all have either I9100's or I9100T's, so we can't help you.
I suggest you ask in the appropriate Q&A section relating to your phone (Ctomgee gave you links in his post). If you have the 3G version, use the 1st link. If you have the 46/LTE version, use the 2nd link.
Ok, my apologies. I have moved this to the appropriate forum. Thanks again.
NP & good luck. Hope you get it sorted/your phone working as it should again.

so she bought a new phone without even powering it on.. she came to my house and later said it was stuck on a boot up image that read team whiskey, im no phone buff so i have no idea what going on. i put out a help post on craigslist and i was referred here for help..
so please let me know whats going on with this
BTW its a samsung vibrant
Awesome. At least she made the right choice in purchasing the phone from someone who used the right ROM.
What you're going to need to do is either get the phone into Recovery Mode or ODIN back to stock.
I'm guessing you will need to ODIN back to stock as it's stuck on the boot screen. Do a search in the Development forum and look for the latest ODIN package where it includes the ODIN program and the necessary files to bring the phone back to stock (.tar, .pit, etc.)
There are walkthroughs on how to run the program as well.
If it says Team Whiskey then it probably has the newest Bionix ROM. One of the best to have on it. If it is the first boot after the cache is cleared it can take 10 minutes for it's first boot to rebuild the cache. If it is the first boot after the ROM was flashed you should wait a full ten minutes for the ROM to complete its initial setup and then reboot it. Since you don't know I would wait anyhow, it can not hurt. DON'T TOUCH THE PHONE DURING THESE INITIAL TEN MINUTES OR IT WILL BE BUGGY.

However, if its stuck at boot as the OP stated, then Odin to stock is probably going to be his best bet. The third link that was posted by T313C0mun1s7 is the place to start.
You have some work to do OP, you're best bet is to Odin back to stock, and you will find the resources needed in the Vibrant Bible linked above. Good luck.
Bottom line Franky is this:
It's not un-fixable. The posters here are correct in that if you can see the logo you're seeing, then it's more than likely fully recoverable and can be a great phone. The post here that has provided you links is a very good one. Best thing you can do is read all the "noob" guides/FAQ/bible threads that are stickied to the top of most of the categories in the Vibrant section. They contain a TON of useful info. If you can use a PC and have the correct USB cable, you can get it done.
And if you do get it back up and running, and she got a deal on it, she might not be so stupid after all!
A quick background for you on terms and what's what since you are not familar with the phone
The Vibrant was originally sold with a software operating system Android 2.1 The version of that system was JFD which, the letters are code for version and release date. So, when you read all the numbers/letters they are talking about newer versions... the latest and greatest.
I would 1st try turning on the phone and let it sit for 10-15 min and see if the previous person did not complete the installation process. If it goes to the home screen, then you are good to go. If not, then you will need to Odin back to stock.
If you can see a logo, the the phone will respond to software via Odin. Odin is a software you load on your desktop computer , it opens a menu that kinda looks like an custom excel sheet. In the upper left corner when you plug in the phone to connect to the desktop with Odin already open,it will say com 0 , com8 or something what it reads out is less important what is important is it recognizes the phone. From there the noob guide will explain everything else.
This is a super phone, especially because you can modify it so easily and it is REAL hard to permanently brick (permanently break). Read the bible and members S15274N noob guide......... his sticky in general is pretty complete and very easy to understand. If you get stuck come back to the forum and we will help you solve. Good luck
In the Noob guide it will have the drivers Odin and the other utilities you will need.
odin back to stock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803492
How much did she pay for it? If it was like $500 +, then yea, that was really stupid but if she got it for under $150 because it was supposedly "broken", then she had unintentionally made a smart buy. The seller would've been the stupid one for not researching on how to revive their Vibrant.
Send me a PM and I'll be glad to help!!

apparently she had her brother try and repair it and now it wont even show the team whiskey logo. all it does is show the vibrant/samsung image then it shuts off and repeat over and over
if anyone here is near anaheim california i'd gladly appreciate any help from you
This phone is really resilient, and if you're still getting images on the screen, you can still fix it. The trick is to get it into download mode, which can be hit or miss, and may take several tries. There are different methods posted around the internet, but for mine, I hold the vol+ and vol- and then plug in the usb cable connected to the computer. If it goes into download mode, then you're home free. Once you Odin it back to stock, you can go anywhere from there.

**Posted in the III sub forum instead of II, so my sincere apologies for that***
I'm in desperate need of help. Forgive My noobness, but as I said, I'm desperate. And I've searched and read for hours, but can't find anything that relates to my exact situation, or that will help me and I can't remember anything about the string of numbers to get my root, except that it wasn't listed ANYWHERE (I just updated to Ice Cream yesterday if that matters) I know it had an L and a 5 in it.
So how can I get it back to stock or root it? I've obviously done something wrong. I'm without any internet right now, so i'm totally relying on this phone. It's stuck at the Samsung Galaxy SII GT-1900 screen, won't come on, turn off, I can't do the volume up/down screen, Nothing.
I used an XDA YouTube vid to root, but it wont' let me post it here.
Also, later added that I did get it to go to a menu by pressing the up volume that I have never seen that would let me reboot the phone, or do a factory reset. When I tried to reboot, it went to a loading/waiting screen with a hat on it.
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer. I'm not totally technically challenged, but I'm no Bill Gates either.
You need to boot your phone up into Download Mode by turning it off (pull out the battery), then put the battery back in; connect one end of your USB charge cable into a laptop or desktop, hold vol up AND vol down, and then plug the usb cable into the phone. Then you need to use Odin to flash working firmware/software.
Thank you!! But--here is my problem and you may not know any more than I do---what is the working firmware? I think it is I need before the CC that I'm not sure what it is, correct? Again thank you for helping me.
Another appearant victim of galaxys2root.
First, you must verify that you have the SGS II - SGH-I777 model. If not, you're in the wrong forum.
I assume you are able to get into download mode as outlined above.
Go to this thread and flash straight stock UCKH7. Follow the directions. Post back here with success or failure of the flash.

Yes, I have a SGH-1777. I just saw II and posted in three, totally my mistake last night.
I just tried, and it said ''Low battery, can't access download mode'' in red at the top of the screen, so I'm assuming that I *can* access it.
I'm going to go get in the pool and try again when I get out, letting it charge for about an hour.
Thank you again. I'll let you know if I'm able to do this or not.
Why did you flash something i900 if you definitely have an i777? If you are able to fix this you need to do a lot more reading before you continue trying to do things to your phone.

I didn't flash something for an i900---I followed a step by step video posted by an XDA member for a S2 Galaxy 1777.
I figured out where I went wrong, I checked the auto reboot and F-Reset Time.
I was able to fix it, with help of reading the links posted here and lot of help from someone else. I do appreciate all the information posted here, I've learned a lot about my phone over the last few days just by reading.

I'm glad to hear that your phone is working, and that you have learned a lot.
With regard to what went wrong... checking auto reboot and F-reset time are normally recommended when flashing anything with Odin3. I'd be more inclined to believe that the problem was in the firmware that you flashed.
Hey everyone, I just tried to root my Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9305 and I believe that I used the wrong rom (for I9300). Ever since I rooted it I can't use the phone, whenever I turn it on it just goes straight to the "Downloading... Do not turn off target!!". I can't exit download mode (tried pressing volume up+power+home) All I can do is re-enter download mode by pressing volume down+power+home. Please help! What should I do? I don't know where to start and I really hope I haven't turned my precious into an expensive doorstop.

First you posted on the wrong forum the I9305 has a separate Q & A thread. Onto though your problem though... your phone is on a semi-brick state since it can still boot into download mode so there's still hope... what I can recommend you to do is that you flash a stock rom this time make sure its for the I9305 branch and not the I9300 one just go to Sammobile and search. If that still fails then better wait for a more experienced user to give you a possible fix as i don't own an I9305 one.
It seems hard to find the stock rom on sammobile for the I9305, I'm aware I'm a complete noob when it comes to this stuff but usually I'm pretty good at finding these things... Has anyone got a link to it?

I was in a similar situation to our unfortunate friend, biggyjurss. I nearly gave up all hope of ever restoring my phone (SIII GT-19305) to the way it was. I really didn't think there was any way back from being stuck in the download screen that will still haunt me the rest of my days. With everyone's help, I managed to restore everything to the way it was!!!! **** YEEEAAHH! I have learnt a valuable lesson in not to EVER attempt rooting a phone again unless I really know what I am doing and I have done my research. I want to thank everyone on this thread for helping me out!
i'm having this exact same problem after doing the exact same mistakes and nothing seems to be helping. I've already wiped everything from the phone and tried Kies to getting the phone back to stock, but Kies just crashes in the process. I can also get to the boot menu and to the download menu, but nothing helps. The phone just keeps coming back to the downloading screen. Please help :crying: I thought there would be no trouble with rooting your phone since every site just said how easy it is...
THANK YOU!
I made the same error (flashed i9300 instead of i9305), and got stuck too.
Tried flashing the rooted i9305 to no avail.
Had to cross my fingers hoping that my laptop's BSOD doesn't come when I was downloading the stock off Sammobile. (I get intermittent BSODs, usually because of the heat. My laptop is old.)
It's now working again after flashing the stock firmware.
Thank you all, once again!
Hi guys. I have seen and read through plenty of the same problems regarding the bootloop issue on the forum. I seem to be stuck somewhere different so I post this question. I hope someone can help.
I have a standard S3 I-9305 LTE in South Africa. Not rooted before or any mods. But somehow it started bootlooping a couple of weeks ago. I read and implemented the Recovery Mode- Cleared the cache and then rebooted, and it worked, plenty of times.
But now it has gone into a solid bootloop and i cannot access recovery mode. So read up about Download mode and installed Odin, Kies and the Cf Root file on my PC.
Now when I enter Download mode on the phone, and continue( press Volume Up) after the warning, the device restarts again. This I have done a hundred times and each time removing battery and waiting a couple of minutes. So essentially I cannot get Download mode to function but I do have access to it.
So this I know, this is a software , possible ROM problem, NOT hardware as the device worked perfectly after bootloop issue started.
I did the latest Firmware Upgrade to Android 4.2( i think, i r noob in this) yesterday. This was done on the phone itself under About-check-firmware. The Phone worked fine afterwards but then went into this never ending tormenting bootloop without yielding.
I live far from a proper service centre and I need my phone for work, thus very urgent.
I also have checked if the power button is stuck but it is not.
I am prepared to root the device and install any other ROM, Flash anything that can get me back on.
Any advice please?
Thanks in advance

Try plugging your phone into pc before you access download mode, remove the battery before you press volume up.

Hi Boom,
I have seen you have diligently answered many queries, please to be cautious saying it is a motherboard or hardware issue, it makes peoples heart sink before trying other avenues first. But don't get me wrong, the fact that you took the time to answer me makes you my hero. :good: And thanks.

Hi there,
After two days of continuous efforts to resolve the issue and reading hundreds of articles and forum threads, I have tried everything to fix the problem to no avail.
I have just recently started using Android (Samsung Galaxy S3 I900T) It was purchased in New Zealand. When my iPhone died, I decided to try Android as I was getting a little sick of iOS. Anyway, since I am a total noob, I followed a great guide here on XDA forums to install a custom ROM. I installed Paranoid following step by step instructions and LOVED it. Everything was working well and I was happy with the "lollipop" as Jellybean was laggy and slow.
I then tried a couple of apps for various tasks that asked me to 'root' the device. I did not really care for it until Cleanmaster asked me to. So I installed an app (can't even remember the name) and it rebooted the phone. Now it is just stuck at "Samsung Galaxy SIII" white logo.
I tried to go into recovery mode by pressing Volume up + Home button + power and it simply won't work. Pressing volume down button however does bring the "Download mode".
According to many articles I have read, it seems my phone is soft bricked. Is there anyone who could help me to fix my phone? I am desperate and would highly appreciate any assistance! Please be kind as I am new to Android OS and pretty much a noob.
I will be checking for replies every 30 minutes in anticipation there might be someone knowledgable here to help me out.
Please feel free to ask any questions you may need to assist me and I will try my best to answer them as technically as possible.
Thank you in advance!
PS- I beg your pardon if I posted this in the wrong section or if I have not given enough information.

Hi Tallman, thank you for your response. I am currently downloading the recommended firmware (916 MB, 2 days left till completion )
While its being downloaded, I have another question: whenever I connect my phone in "Downloading mode" by pressing volume down + home + power, Odin does not even pickup on the device. It is almost like nothing is even connected. I have installed the latest Samsung driver on my PC.
Would the flashing work if Odin is not even recognizing or acknowledging my device?
Thanks

You have to wait while your stock rom is checked and in the pda box then it should recognize it look here for guides >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/help/guide-odin-flash-guide-t1671969 << Also I noticed in your first post you put Galaxy S3 I900T did you miss spell S3 I900 because it should be S3 I9300

Indeed, that was my bad. That is why I am so glad I have finally found someone like an expert yourself. The model is GT-I9300T. I missed the 3 in the original post. I believe (I might be wrong) the 'T' is for all the phone sets issued by Telecom (now rebranded as Spark) in Australia and New Zealand.
I have managed to download around 16 MBs lol.
Once again, appreciated your help dude :good:
My suggestion is connect your phone and keep it with Samsung kies for recovery. It would bring your phone back to purchased state.

Thanks for the response.
Kies does not detect any phone. Could it be due to the fact that the bootscreen is stuck in loop? I was loving my Custom paranoid ROM until some motherlicking app forced booted the phone in order to "root it".
I do not want to switch back to iOS and thats why I am so desperate to get my S3 fixed. I have put my SIM in my iPhone until Galaxy gets fixed.
Its strange how much I supported everything Apple back in the and how I much I dislike it now. It's like I have divorced Apple and now my Android mistress is acting up too. :silly:
Odin is too sensitive i guess i too have a s3 GT-I9300 and i have noticed that all usb cords dont work on odin. Try to change the cord it works. The shorter the better. It will surely detect just change the usb cord or try to connect to another usb port.
