NEWB: What root option for a BNIB 1.4.1? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Picked up an NT finally now that the CM9 looks like it is around the corner.
NT came OOB with 1.4.1... but I'm confused as to which way to best root it? Mind you I've never rooted a device before, JB iPhones yes... first real Android device (other than my Android running over WM on my HTC Touch Pro 2).
From the DEV section it looks like 1.4.1 can be rooted without having flash back to 1.4.0... but it appears it's not 100%. I try to avoid flashing whole updates as much as possible... I'm an old school electronics guy where EEPROMs were good for 20-30 writes before they went in the bin.
So if it's possible I would rather root a 1.4.1 and block OTA... or should I just do the 1.4.0 downgrade that also installs CWM?

IMHO I would revet back to 1.4.0 using This
And then Root using This
From your comments I believe you have already visited the the 2nd thread I linked. Do NOT use any of the files from the OP. Brianf21 posted a file yesterday that is the zero'd out image (smaller) with his latest Update.zip all in one file. It's the only file you will need. Use that file and skip any steps that say to copy update.zip to the Root of the SD card.
There is controversy as to if rooting 1.4.1 using that method leaves side-loading intact. Some say yes, some no. Avoid the controversy and REVERT to 1.4.0.
My .02
Edit: I spoke incorrectly. You will need the file linked in post 14 if you will be using the windows method as it contains the Image Flashing routine. Just use Brian's file when the instructions tell you to browse for the image.

I ended up just using Brian's image from yesterday over 1.4.1... so far so good, have the GApps, can DL from the market, etc.
If anything gets weird, I'll drop down to 1.4.0 and re-root.

Can you side-load app's?
Does the unknown sources toggle remain checked?
Is NTHiddenSettings functioning properly?
Thanks!
Edit: Saw your post in the other thread. Guess the answer to the above is NO...

Yeah, I think the 1.4.1 sideloading isn't a 100% guarantee. Perhaps if the NT was at 1.4.0 and then upgraded, there might be something that allows it to be re-opened.
But for a factory fresh 1.4.1... I think it's a no-go.
Will revert to 1.4.0 tomorrow and re-root.
Do I still need to block OTA with Brianf's image or does it cover that?

I did .... using the Titanium Method (3 files). My version now shows 9.9.9

I too am running 1.4.1 and rooted using Brian's update.zip. The Unknown Sources doesn't stay ticked, and the hack to get it working doesn't work. But I can sideload apps using adb, no problems. I've gotten several live wallpapers I'd be collecting over the last few weeks installed.

I managed to sideload SQLite Editor and manually did the FOTA changes and also edit the "Install_Non_Market_Apps" key in the Settings.db file.
Managed to install Amazon and side-load a bunch of other stuff since. Dunno if the key setting will survive a reboot, will try later tonight.
EDIT: It appears as if doing a manual edit in Settings.db will allow sideloading even after reboot.

[Stock Firmware]Restore Barnes & Nobel Nook Tablet 16G 1.4.0 from SDCard

This is for the Nook Tablet 16Gig version only. Do not use with 8Gig version
Introduction
Making a magic SDCard which will take you back to stock 1.4.0 is easy!
This method will allow you to restore 1.4.0 firmware onto your Nook Tablet. Personally, I think holding the buttons and halting the device boot 8 times in a row is a bit time consuming. So, here is how you make a "Magic SDCard".
Instructions
Just follow these 4 easy steps to restore your device to 1.4.0.
Download this file: http://devftp.xda-developers.com/files/AdamOutler/NookTablet/acclaim_update.zip (Do not change the file name. Make sure it is named "acclaim_update.zip" without quotes).
Copy the file on a Micro SDCard.
Insert the Micro SDCard into your Nook Tablet
Turn on your Nook and observe a factory restoration.
Conclusion
This will initiate Recovery Mode and flash the entire zip. acclaim_update.zip will restore your device to stock firmware and wipe all user data. I will be working on other methods and I believe it is possible to force the device to boot it's entire firmware from Micro SDCard.
Troubleshooting
"N" Button is inoperative
solution:
Press and hold the Power and "N" Button until the device reboots.
Continue to hold the Power and "N" button until the device reboots 8 times. This will wipe data and restore the "N" button functionality
SDCard method does not work
solutions:
Ensure you have a Nook Tablet, not a Nook Color (funny as it sounds, this is a big problem)
redownload the acclaim_update.zip
Use the Nook settings menu to format the sdcard
Use a different SDCard
Video walkthrough
This video will walk you through switching firmware versions, rooting, backing up, and several other techniques
At the risk of sounding clueless..... How will placing a .zip file on a non-bootable card help? What about the signed bootloader issue? Are we assuming the Nook Tablet is not broken to the point it will not boot on it's own?
Part of the boot process checks the SD Card for this exact file (and checks the contents I assume). If it exists, it gets executed. Someone else has already confirmed this works, though we can't yet get it to work for any other firmware (ICS, etc).
Nice. Use the old 1.4.0 factory image to restore. Brilliant.
Now if only we can do that with custom roms.
Initial registration process with B&N
Does this .zip boots up just as if the NT came out of the box? if so, would the initial registration process with B&N push the 1.4.1 to us, or rather the NT pulls it from B&N?
It will (I believe) reset it to an out-of-the-box condition. The registration process might pull the update automatically...if you set up wifi. Don't set it up (right away), and you won't have an issue. Go in, root, side-load what you need to block the update, and you should be good to go.
according to BN's website, the update takes 5-10 min to download onto your device, and they instruct you NOT to power it off while this is occurring.
I would think you have a few minutes when it comes up to quickly find and install a few apps you may need for the 'fixing' process, (es file explorer, mount /system), then shut off the wifi.
Worst case scenario, you lose 5 minutes and are forced to restore again...
Just to be clear, this doesn't require root right?

No. Root is not required.
A few painfully obvious noob questions. I have a 16gb sd card installed in my tablet. I have sideloaded numerous apps and they show up on my go launcher. Can I use that sd card to install the download you recommend? I assume you mean download the link you provided to my computer and then side load it to my SD card from the usb port on my computer.
Do I need to port all my side loaded apps from the go launcher onto my computer prior to this installation as the factory reset will wipe out all my third party sideloads?
Sorry for the questions. I'm sure this is obvious to most if not all on here but I learned to use a keyboard with a Underwood manual typewriter in 1957 and I'm just now getting comfortable with windows XP.

Yes, this is (currently) it's primary purpose.
What if you haven't received OTA yet?
I am really nervous. I bought my wife a NT for Xmas...i rooted it and loaded it with everything she'd like to have on it. Then, i turned it off, wrapped it, and placed under tree.
When she opens it Xmas morning, will it automatically load this 1.4.Bull****? Is there anything that can be done to prevent the update before it happens so that you don't lose hours of work?
Thanks,
Tommy

Okay, so i went in Titanium backup and froze the devicemanger and bn cloud service. That will enable me to NOT receive this update, correct?
If you installed the gapps with indirects root script you shouldnt have to worry about the update as it installs FOTAKill.apk as well which should kill ota updates like this.
Edit: Does this mean the tablet is unbrickable if you end up bricking it by messing with its software?
Thanks so much for this file and the information.

Not yet.. we need to prove it.. however, it will take all the root folder files in the update.zip uncompressed and named in a special way to do that.
I just checked and my wife NT is still 1.0.
What is the improvement of 1.4.0? Seems like i missed it.
And can i use this package to upgrade from 1.0?

[Q] B&N somehow push update?

So I just checked my rooted nook (rooted with indirect's method), and noticed a notification that said that I had just been updated to 1.4.1 somehow. All of my apps I downloaded with the android market have been retained, but it seems as though the market has been removed. The keyboard has also been replaced with the stock nook keyboard. Has this happened to anyone else, or did I at some point mess up rooting and did not actually block OTA's?
I discovered the same problem yesterday. My Tablet was rooted using inderect's updated OTA blocking method. I followed those directions to the T, but am wondering if I missed the actual OTA blocking step as well.
I can use the nook search and pull up go launcher ex, but not ADW. The android store is gone, but the amazon store is still there. However, I can't access the amazon store or any downloaded content as the a the package installer window pops up for everything, then wiggles like crazy in the center of the screen, and won't disappear allow any button presses. I have to touch the N button to make it go away.
Sidenote: I can access my one gift card B&N purchased book (Ready Player One). Great book, but not much of a silver lining for the nook.
What software version were you showing before the update? 1.4.0, or 9.9.9?
I was showing 1.4.0
I never had the amazon store, but it worries me that it was somehow messed up too by their update.
My current plan of action to get back is to use this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402190
to get back to 1.4.0, and then root again. Once I'm done with that, I'll try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20570665#post20570665 to block OTA's. Hopefully that should work...

Eh, with these types of mods, it would be hard to really jack it up permanently ... just make sure you go slowly and read everything twice!
You didn't complete the process. You had to download Titanium Backup (paid version), then freeze the service, run the apk and then unfreeze it and it would have change to version 9.9.9. If you were still on 1.4.0 then that is why you received the update....you never locked it.
I'm still on version 9.9.9 and have left the Wifi on for the past two days and nothing has been pushed to my device. You just missed a step in the process.

Unless I miss my guess, that step was where you open up Titanium Backup Pro, find the Device Manager Services (?) and freeze it.

I was able to do it with the free version of TiBu. I believe I manually changed it from DeviceManager.apk to DeviceManager.apk.bak before restoring from TiBu, but at any rate, I have been showing 9.9.9 for over a week now.
I think that that is exactly the step they missed. Freeze the service then loading the apk and then unfreezing it. I do know that they need the purchased version of Titanium in order to freeze and unfreeze service.
I think you can get by with the free version of Titanium Backup. I did and am still at 9.9.9 for 5 days now with wifi on all the time.
Sorry I missed post #11. This had already been mentioned. Anyway I had the same experience.
I was showing 1.4.0 after following indiercts post. I now am seeing that I missed the titanium backup "freeze" to swith it over to version 9.9.9
I'm gonna factory reset, re-root, and then attempt the titanium fix (fingers crossed).
thanks for the help peeps!

You don't need to freeze it. I used the free version of titantium backup just a few days ago. Just follow Albert's video and skip the freezing step.
Now running version 9.9.9 and everything is running great (fingers still crossed). You can definitely do this with the free version of titanium. Just follow alberta video instructions. Big thanks to indirect and albert for the hard work!

Failed OTA - Determining which system apps are missing?

OK, I'm a noob and made the noob mistake of deleting (rather than freezing) some system apps after rooting. Won't make that mistake again.
I do not have backups nor am I completely sure which apps are missing. As a result of these missing apps I cannot complete the latest OTA update.
I downloaded a system dump and noted a few apk files in it that were not on my system though I believe that there are other apk files missing which are not in the system dump (MyLibrary, WebStorage etc) so I am not sure the particular system dump I got is up to date.
Copying the apk files to my system\app folder did not help, the update still fails.
I seem to recall seeing instructions somewhere for manual installation via power/down volume which would allow you to see a text dump of the update with reports of missing files or mismatched CRC's. I cannot find this again but such a thing would help me determine what is missing so that I can then attempt to find replacement apk files.
Sorry for being such a noob. Can anyone help?
Thanks
Made the same mistake when upgrading to ICS from Honeycomb...
If you get the previous update (the one your running now) from the Asus website, extract the update file and place it in one of the folders on the tablet, (I forgot which folder, sorry...) reboot and the tab will recognize it and prompt you to update. Once that update is finished installing, you should have all your bloat back. Delete the update file from the tab since you don't need it anymore, and then try to update to the most recent OTA Update.
Just do a search in the TFP forums and you should find complete instructions on how to do this.
I'm just assuming this will work for ICS to ICS... because it worked for me when I updated to ICS to Honeycomb...
Hope this method works for you.
I had the same issue.
Download:
http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/EeePAD/TF201/US_epaduser9_4_2_11UpdateLauncher.zip
Once downloaded, extract the contents of the zip file (yes, its another zip file of the same name inside) to your MICRO SD. put your micro SD in your TF201 (or eject and re-insert if you copied via cable)
Once the card is mounted you will see a triangle with an "!" in the notification area. Touch the notification and it will open a dialogue to install the manual update.
You will lose root, even with OTA Rootkeeper.
Re-root your device. Install OTA Rootkeeper if you have not already. Run Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. Protect your su.
Check for updates. Install .13 OTA.

Should be a lesson learned. Stop messing with system apps. Always causes problems one way or another. The apps included are nothing to even be considered bloat. I still have everything installed n prime super fast. If anything just freeze the apps, never delete them unless u always want to have failed OTA.

I agree completely, and my lesson is learned. But why on earth would a freaking E-reader app be a system app?
That was my hangup. AsusReader a/k/a the My Library app.
And mine was backed up with Titanium, which obviously bungled it since it would not restore.

[Q] Unrooted by 1.4.2. Options?

I rooted my NT two days ago using Albert's SD card method (thanks!), and thought I had for sure used NT Hidden Settings to block OTA. This morning I saw that the update had been applied, and a few things on my NT are now broken.
Now I cannot access the market.
Other gapps are broken now too including Talk, Currents, and gmail.
Can I just follow the steps to make an SD card and re-apply root, or do I need to do a wipe or reset first?
What are my options?
Thanks everyone!
I had this happen to me on 1.4.0 I just started all over and MADE sure I seen the 9.9.9
So I would just re-flash my SD-card with CWM, boot into CWM, wipe, and start over again? I'm fine with starting over, I just want to make sure I don't mess anything up during the reset process!

FWIW, If you re-root with Albert's SD Card Method (4.50), blocking future ota updates is a simple one click process (it's now an option in NT Settings). Or, just sideload the latest NT Settings (released on 2/15) and you're good to go.

back up and running
Ok, so I wiped and re-rooted and now everything's just about back to normal. I've tried the built-in OTA block a few times, but my version number still says 1.4.2. Maybe it's like the unknown sources setting and I have to reboot or wait awhile...
I'll just make sure to make some backups this time. Good news is albert's method still works on 1.4.2, but he knew that already I guess.
I'll be back if anything goes wrong, but thanks everyone!
I purposefully updated mine to 1.4.2 (from 1.4.1 rooted) and was able to use brianf21's bootable root sd card successfully without having to wipe anything.
1.4.2 is completely rootable, I was able to use CWM with a flash zip to get it all on there. I'm hoping to release my work this weekend, I'm just waiting for some files that should allow it to work for 8GB devices too.

He method and files till work for 1.4.2? Great, I just bought my NT the other day.
I just got my new NT in the mail. Should I use the sd card method over the system it has, or should I go back to 1.4.0 and root that. My wifes NT is 9.9.9 and works well. Also, I don't have a sd card yet, is there anyway to root my new tablet without going to the store? (looks like the tablet shipped with 1.4.1)
Thanks
You could just order an n2a card and be done with it. No rooting and you'll have an Android tablet when the n2a card arrives.

I personally think blocking OTAs is a little silly considering how easy this device is becoming to root. However to get Market back and stuff all you have to do is take one of the sd root methods and use that, this will restore the files to /system that got removed by the OTA
Checkit
OTA block by Indirect's 9.9.9 Titanium Patch and CWM recovery flash
I believe that 9.9.9 patch prevents the file from every being downloaded and I believe the custom recovery prevents the File from ever installing. Any OTA that comes down from Barnes and Noble Requires STOCK recovery to install.
I also prove my Root SD cards will Root the 1.4.2 updated 16gb Nook Tablet!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=8AUMKvxnI9M
when powering back on nook it says reset to factory
{So I have used your method before but now when I go to reboot after making a root card all it says is would you like to restore to factory settings, I have also tired using the usb to boot up when the others failed. Now I am stuck with a stock nook with 1.4.2. Am I missing something?}
So after downloading 4.6 everything worked perfect, and got the 9.9.9
Thanks for the hard work.

[Q] I think I need to reroot...??

Im getting the problem that a lot of people have gotten, that the android market is no longer working (try to start it; You must add an account to the device to continue. Do you want to add one now?), probably due to an auto update. I had rolled back to 1.4.1 to root (which i later learned was unecessary), so the device updated itself a few weeks after my root. I used albert's method on a 4gb microSD.
Do I need to reroot the device? my concern is, will I lose all my apps, and all the settings of those apps? what all is lost / how should I go about fixing this?
anyone else have or know how to fix this issue?
go back to 1.4.0 and use albert's root sdcard method.
Will this cause it to try to update to 1.4.2 again in the future? Or will this fix it because the root was meant for blocking updates on 1.4.0?
I'll lose all my apps correct?

It all depends which root method you use to root but what you can do is always once rooted apply the the block separately by using titanium backup (indirect's method) that way you won't get the update, so far that is the most reliable way.
